When new or expanding catfish farmers lose money, the culprit is rarely disease or water supply; it's almost always "The Feed Trap."This phenomenon occurs when a farm bleeds cash through inefficient feeding practices long before the harvest ever hits the market.
The 5 Pillars of The Feed Trap
1. Ignoring the Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR)
FCR measures how many kilograms of feed it takes to produce 1{ kg} of fish flesh.

*Target: 1.0 - 1.2 (1.1 kg feed = 1 kg fish)
* The Trap:*Unmonitored farms often run at an FCR of 1.6 - 2.0+. At that rate, every bag of feed handed to the fish shrinks your profit margin to zero.
2. Overfeeding & Water Quality Collapse
Uneaten feed doesn't just waste money; it actively destroys your stock:
* Excess pellets sink or dissolve, raising ammonia levels and depleting dissolved oxygen.
* Stressed fish stop eating, slowing growth and stretching a standard 4–5 month grow-out cycle into a 7–8 month money pit.
3. Pellet Mismatch & Energy Waste
Feeding improper pellet sizes or incorrect crude protein (CP) percentages slows metabolism:
Under-sized feed: Fish expend more energy gathering tiny pellets than they gain from eating them.
Over-sized feed: Causes choking, high size variation (shooters/runts), and uneven batch growth.
4. Over-reliance on Premium Imported Commercial Feeds
While high-quality floating feeds are critical during the nursery and early grow-out stages (0.2mm–2mm), staying on top-tier commercial imported brands up to harvest without strategic transitions significantly inflates production cost per kilogram.
5. Blind Feeding (Feeding the Clock, Not the Fish)
Dumping a fixed quantity of feed into the pond every morning regardless of weather, water temperature, or appetite. On cold, rainy, or overcast days, dissolved oxygen drops, lowering fish metabolism—meaning half of that feed goes entirely to waste.
How Successful Operations Escape the Trap
Golden Rule of Aquaculture: Never measure success by the *number of bags fed, but by the cost per kilogram of live fish harvested.

Sample Monthly: Net and weigh a sample (5–10% of stock) bi-weekly to adjust daily feed rations accurately based on true biomass.
Feed to Response:Practice response feeding (stopping as soon as feeding activity slows down to 80%) rather than pouring fixed rations.
Phase Transition: Utilize high-protein floating feeds (42–45% CP) early, then transition smoothly to quality grow-out feeds (38–40% CP) to optimize input costs without sacrificing velocity.
