BusinessFG Approves Sale Of NITEL/MTEL For $252m by bugs1(op): 10:19pm On Dec 18, 2014
The National Council on Privatisation (NCP) on Thursday approved the sale of the liquidated Nigeria Telecommunication Plc. and its subsidiary, Mtel, to NATCOM Consortium for $252million.

The Chairman of NCP’s Technical Committee, Mr Atedo Peterside, told State House correspondents in Abuja that the approval was one of the decisions taken at a meeting of the council presided over by Vice-President Namadi Sambo.

According to Vice-President Namadi Sambo, the ratification of the sale by the NCP marks the end of the entire bidding process and what is now left is to conclude the necessary documentation.

He noted that the NITEL/Mtel transaction was different from what happened with sale of power plants because Nitel was not ongoing concern, but a liquidated one and no longer in business.

“In view of this, the liquidator will through the court pay some verified claims of creditors of NITEL/Mtel, which, therefore, sidesteps the issue of third party creditors.

“But it does not preclude the government from settling any obligations it feels like,“ he further explained.

The director-general of the Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr Patrick Akpobolokemi has debunked the allegation that ex-militant Government Ekpemokpolo, “AKA Tompolo” bought warships, explaining that they were not warships but boats meant for the Nigerian Navy for the purpose of combating piracy, oil theft and other sea crimes.

A report recently went viral that Tompolo acquired six warships from Norway. But the NIMASA boss said they were not warships, but decommissioned boats provided for the Navy on behalf of NIMASA and that the boats are now manned by the Navy.

Tompolo sits on the board of Global West Vessels Specialists Limited (GWVSL), a company the agency awarded a multi-million dollar contract to provide anti-piracy platforms, while NIMASA maintains an MOU with the Navy on anti-piracy, oil theft and other sea crimes. The contract to GWVSL was signed in February 2012 and was to be renewed annually based on satisfactory performance.

According to him, trade disputes in the country is currently governed by the provisions of the Trade Disputes Act Cap T8 laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.

“The greatest challenge of the present dispute settlement is that the entire process from negotiation, conciliation up to arbitration is domiciled in, activated by and operated by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity.

“Under section 9 of the Trade Dispute Act, the minister appoints the chairman, vice chairman and all members of the industrial arbitration panel.

“This scenario is totally at variance with the best practices in dispute settlement as it is difficult to see how such a body can be impartial where government Is a party,’’ he said.

PoliticsCBN Signs N220b Empowerment Fund With Albino Foundation by bugs1(op): 9:16am On Oct 06, 2014
In a bid to empower persons living with disabilities, the federal government through the Central Bank has signed a N220 billion Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) fund with the Albino Foundation.

At the occasion, the President of Albino Foundation, Dr Jack Epelle said it was a great disservice to person with albinism not to be included as persons living with disability.

‘We are not ashamed to say that. We have a disability in our skin and eyes. It takes a person with albinism 10 minutes to burn in the sun but 1:30 minutes for a normal person,’ he said.

In his speech, Central Bank deputy director for development finance said access to finance has been the most critical challenge of small and mediums scale enterprises in Nigeria. ‘In recognition of this, the CBN launched the N220 billion MSME fund to provide long term affordable funding for the sub-sector,’ he said

PoliticsEkiti Workers Begin Strike Over Unpaid Salaries by bugs1(op): 7:31am On Oct 03, 2014
Organised Labour in Ekiti State, yesterday, began indefinite strike to press for the payment of their outstanding salaries and allowances owed by the outgoing Governor Kayode Fayemi’s administration.

The labour unions, under the leadership of Joint Negotiating Council, JNC, also lambasted the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress in the State over what he called its lackadaisical attitude about the plights of the suffering workers.

Briefing newsmen in Ado Ekiti, the JNC Chairman, Oladipupo Johnson, said that the August and September salaries as well as the June and July deductions have not been paid as promised by the governor, describing this as the highest point of insensitivity.

Also in a statement made available in Ado Ekiti by JNC chairman, the body said the strike action became imperative following alleged uncaring attitude displayed by Governor Fayemi towards the welfare of Ekiti workers.

It stated that, “it is unfortunate to note that in spite of the pronouncement and promises from top government functionaries, there seem to be no light at the end of the tunnel. Following this, the workers of the public service had met and directed that workers should not come to work today (yesterday), October 2, 2014 and this subsists until all conditions are met.

PoliticsEFCC Appeals Ruling Discharging Ikuforiji by bugs1(op): 6:45am On Oct 03, 2014
The coast seems not clear for the embattled speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon Adeyemi Ikuforiji as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has appealed the recent ruling of a Federal High Court in Lagos that cleared him of money laundering allegations.

The anti-graft agency in a Notice of Appeal filed before the Lagos Division of the Court of Appeal wants the appellate court to allow its appeal and set aside the decision of the trial judge, Justice Ibrahim Buba dated September 26, 2014.

The EFCC also wants the upper court to order a trial ‘de novo’ (fresh trial) before another judge of the Federal High Court, Lagos, instead of Justice Buba.

Justice Buba had discharged Ikuforiji and his personal assistant (PA), Oyebode Atoyebi over allegations of laundering the sum of N500million belonging to the Assembly.

The offences, according to the commission, contravened Sections 15 (1d) and 16(1d) of Money Laundering Act, M.L.A, 2004 and 2011.
