Rising from its 20th World Igbo Convention in Houston, Texas, USA, on August 20, leaders of the South-east political zone unanimously endorsed President Goodluck Jonathan to do a second term to complete the turn of the South-south. Addressing journalists yesterday on the outcome of the congress, Chief Emmanuel Nwanyanwu, who attended the occasion as one of the leaders from the South-east, explained that various issues bothering the nation were deliberated upon, but noted that the support for Jonathan came top in the discussions. According to Nwanyanwu, the issue of zoning the Presidency to the South-south would be laid to rest if Jonathan is supported for his second term in office while other zones take their turns after him. He also disclosed that the Igbos were giving their support to Jonathan because of his remarkable achievements which have impacted on their lives, such as the Niger Bridge and the second one under construction, passable Onitsha/Enugu and Onitsha/Owerri roads. He stated that part of the resolutions of the congress was a call on all Nigerians to support the president in his fight against terrorism, noting that those behind the insurgency in the country are those who are seeking the nation’s disintegration. The Chairman Committee on Energy, Mineral Resources and Waterfront Infrastructure, Hon. Lanre Ogunyemi, who disclosed this in Lagos , explained that the state House of Assembly has enacted an enabling law to that effect. He said: “The Folawiyo Group is partnering with the Ministry of Energy in the state and very soon, Lagos would join oil producing states. Exploration trends will follow the industry’s perception of the next best resource base to explore and develop, which incorporates both the scale and quality of the resource and the cost of its development. “Through exploration, acquisitions, strategic partnerships and technological expertise, Lagos State is in pursuit of the growth strategy. Natural gas is a future-oriented resource in global energy supplies and there are sufficient supplies of this climate-friendly, cost-effective, and safe fuel. On the challenges of oil exploration, he said, “Competition for natural resources has driven companies to explore and produce in harsh, remote and even hostile locations, where even the simplest of logistical tasks can be difficult and costly.” Read full story http://monitor9ja.com/2014/09/lagos-start-oil-exploration-2015/ |

Members of Chris Oyakhilome‘s Christ Embassy church are divided over his split from his wife Anita who filed for divorce a few months ago on the grounds of ‘unreasonable behaviour’ and ‘adultery’. On a Facebook page called ‘Where is Rev. Anita Oyakhilome,’ some members are putting their pastors and church on blast… Yesterday, one member wrote “I am a Christ Embassy member. I hate one thing there: How can a pastor be working together with a lady hand in hand, attending meetings and lodging in a hotel for days. My girlfriend travels with our branch pastor annually for PPCF which holds in Lagos. Only God knows.” Continue… Another one wrote; “Pastor Chris Oyakhilome must have been discovered compromising his marital bed business. It is what it is. God says judgement will start from His house. ‘Touch not my anointed’ is God’s instruction regarding all His children, not an individual nicking, scheming, threatening monies off people’s purses and telling them that salvation is tied to tithes and that seed sowing is only money donation to the church/pastor’s coffers. Barring unforeseen circumstances, General Muhammadu Buhari would declare for the presidential race within the next few days as he rounds off his nationwide consultations, his political aide has disclosed. The former head of state and national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is not new in the race as he has been consistently contesting for the presidency since 2003 when he ran against the then president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo under the platform of the All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP). Buhari also contested in 2007 and in 2011 against the late President Umaru Yar Adua and President Goodluck Jonathan respectively but lost in the three elections. With the merger of the leading opposition parties that gave birth to APC, Buhari camp strongly believes that if he could get 11million votes when he ran under the platform of one of the parties that merged, Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), then winning next year’s poll is a forgone conclusion. A suspected Boko Haram bomber was yesterday arrested while trying to detonate what was perceived as an explosive at the Centrex Unit of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) in the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos. Sources said the suspect was able to gain access into the NAMA facility because he was physically challenged. He was, however, apprehended by security officials of the airspace agency who had witnessed his unusual movement as he was trying to press an object which they suspected could be an explosive. The airport police command was promptly alerted and the suspect handed over to the police, who took him to Beesam Police Station, Airport Command, where he was interrogated. Efforts to get a confirmation from the Beesam Police Station did not yield result as the policemen on duty refused to talk to journalists who had besieged the office. The commissioner of police, Airport Command, Mr Waheed Salahu, said that it would be premature to talk with the media on the issue. A source close to the command confirmed the story. The source who could not talk to the media on the issue said that the suspect was arrested around noon yesterday and had been taken to the Beesam Police Station. Anambra State High Court sitting at Awka in Anambra State has said that the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) has legal powers to make regulations regarding the design and production of the new vehicle number plate and driver’s licence. A Nigerian, Chief Ajefo Ekwo, approached the court to challenge the constitutional powers of the FRSC to enforce compliance, by all motorists, to its directive for the re-registration of motor vehicles previously registered, by obtaining and replacing same with the new vehicle number plates. In his judgement, the Chief Judge of the court, Justice Peter Umeadi said, “I see that the six issues for determination distilled by the respondent (FRSC) flow from the eight reliefs of the applicant (Chief Ajefo Ekwo). The relief no.1 tend to suggest that it was the respondent who came up with the idea to register vehicles by obtaining and replacing the old number plates with new number plates. “That could not be correct. The powers for such a directive emanated from the National Road Traffic Regulation (NRTR) 2012. Section 36 of the regulations of 2012 stipulate as follows “All private and commercial vehicle shall from the commencement of these Regulations have in them Vehicle Identification Number Plates which shall (a) be carried by the motor vehicle on two plates which shall conform to the requirements of these Regulations and (b) the number plates shall be fixed (i) in such a manner that each is not easily detachable and (ii) in an upright position or within 15 degrees of such position.” He further held, “the Regulations of 2012 commenced on 13 August 2012 and was made by the Federal Road Safety Commission pursuant to Section 5 of the FRSC Establishment Act of 2007. The second part of the Section 39(9) of the Regulations (NRTR) of 2012 made it an offence for any vehicle not to have the said identification number plate.” www.monitor9ja.com

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) on Saturday urged Nigerians to support the Federal Government’s plan to privatise the nation’s refineries. Mr Ajayi Adebayo, new Chairman of IPMAN, Ejigbo Satellite depot branch, made the call during interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos. He said privatising the refineries would help to address the incessant scarcity of petroleum products and also encourage the private sector to participate in building their refineries. “I am in support of government’s plan to privatise the refineries by selling those plants to private investors who have the technical-know-how and effective managerial structure to run them. “Privatising the refineries will serve the country better in the export of refined petroleum products. “That is why l am urging Nigerians to support the government’s effort in privatising our refineries for optimum production as well as revenue generation for the economy’’, he said. The chairman held that Nigerians might experience some hardship immediately after the privatisation, but that the trying period would not last for a long time. “Just like transformation in the communication sector, we were buying SIM card for between N25,000 and N30, 000, but now it is almost free of charge. “If we support the planned privatisation, the transformation that took place in communication sector will also happen in oil and gas sector’’, he said. The chairman also said that it would discourage importation of the products and create more job opportunities for the unemployed graduates. Adebayo, however, said that he would work with other chapters toward peaceful resolution of the crisis rocking the national body of the association. (NAN) www.monitor9ja.com

Lagos State governor, Babatunde Fashola, on Friday said uninterrupted power supply could be a reality in the country, saying the only way to achieve the feat is to vote out the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from power in the forthcoming 2015 general elections. Fashola, who stated this while marking 2,600 days in office at an elaborate ceremony held at the Blue Roof on the Lagos Television premises, said the electricity crisis in the country was caused by lack of ideas and insincerity of purpose on the part of the federal government. “I agree with you that it is possible to generate electricity and to make sure that everybody in this country has electricity. I agree with you that it is simple; what we have done in Lagos within the areas where we are constrained shows that it can be done. But the only way that you and I will have electricity in this country will be to vote out the PDP,” the governor asserted. He added that, “In 16 years, after spending billion of naira, we cannot switch on electricity and in seven years we have created four plants , it shows that something is missing. So unless you vote for All Progressive Congress (APC) and two with an inefficient government it is going to be difficult to have electricity. “They started from Vision 2020-20 and I told you then that they were having nightmares; there was no vision. They moved to 7-point agenda and now they are transforming. “Let me also say that in the last seven years, ask how many new power plants the federal government has commissioned, because sometimes the power that is coming to Lagos at most is 1,000 mega watts; oftentimes it’s 600 mega watts.” www.monitor9ja.com

The National Association of Automobile Manufacturers (NAMA) has given the nation assurances that there will not be a price increase by any of their members involved in the local assembly and manufacture of vehicles in Nigeria. The association refuted news reports allegedly sponsored by car importers who, it said, are opposed to the new auto policy by the federal government, saying they are the ones behind the reports that car prices will rise. In a statement reacting to published reports early in the week, the NAMA said that going by the new auto policy, it is cars assembled overseas and brought into Nigeria that will cost more, not those that are assembled locally. The statement signed by the association’s executive director, Arthur Madueke, gave a strong assurance to Nigerians that the prices of locally produced vehicles will gradually come down, citing the nation’s experience with the aviation and telecommunications sectors as examples. Madueke said, “We pledge our support to the Nigerian people that there would be no increase in the prices of vehicles as being heralded by harbingers of doom, who wish themselves well at the detriment of the growth of Nigeria for the benefit of all.” He added that no member of NAMA was contemplating a price increase and that there will be none. The NAMA accused opponents of the automotive policy of using scare tactics against a progressive policy designed to make cars cheaper in Nigeria, domesticate production, create jobs and bring about transfer of technology. “It was clear that the country needed to gravitate in a new direction, away from the import mind-set, if it was going to embark on sustainable industrial development. Only a select group of traders benefitted from a high end auto market with massive resource drainage in form of foreign exchange outflow and littering of the landscape with a scrap heap in the name of fairly used cars.” The NAMA said it is against this background that the federal government launched a reformatory and revolutionary programme to reposition the economy on an industrial platform. “This necessitated a structural change, one that entailed a re-shuffling of resource allocation away from finished goods importation and distribution. It was clear non-value adding businesses in the auto sector had to give way to more productive linkages. www.monitor9ja.com |

HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE: This unique tropical fruit is extremely high in potassium yet low in salt, making it perfect to beat blood pressure So much so, the US Food and Drug Administration has just allowed the banana industry to make official claims for the fruit’s ability to reduce the risk of blood pressure and stroke.
