So you’ve finally moved into your new place. You may be excited because the bulk of the work is over, but don’t forget about one thing: unpacking after a move. Not to worry. The good news is just like there are tips to make your move go smoother; so here are a few good unpacking tips to make that part of your move a lot less stressful. On top of offering commercial and residential moving services, we at Kaga Movers don’t mind giving you some helpful advice on how to get through unpacking without losing your mind. Avoid Buying New Stuff before Unpacking Of course, you want your new place to look and feel like a new place. However, buying new stuff before you unpack makes it tough to know where everything goes. It’s hard enough trying to fit your old stuff into a new space, but fitting new stuff into new space takes a bit more time and can lead to more frustration when your old staff is still sitting in boxes. Create a Checklist Life is just easier when you write things down, so make a room-by-room checklist of what needs to be unpacked. It’s going to seem massive at first, but you’ll notice that those checks start adding up. Before you know it, you’ll be completely unpacked and relaxing in your new home. Unpack Important Stuff First There’s some kind of strange magic that happens when people move. Things seem to get misplaced or you have a hard time finding something you know for sure you packed. If you start unpacking the important things first, you know right away those things are there and you don’t have to worry. Peace of mind is worth it when you’re moving. Get Rid of Moving Boxes Moving boxes just cause a lot of mess and take up a lot of space, and when you’re unpacking, space is already at a minimum. Discard of your boxes as you empty them, and give yourself more room to operate. As you start piling up the boxes, you’ll feel like you’re getting things accomplished. Don’t Delay Unpacking The longer you put it off, the more challenging unpacking is going to feel, so get started right away. Every little piece counts as progress when unpacking, and you know there’s a lot to get done. Once the movers are gone, that’s your cue to take over. Clean Up while Unpacking One thing about unpacking after a move is that it’s messy. There’ll be boxes and paper and wrapping all over the place. Our advice is to not let all of this pile up before you start cleaning. As you unpack, put things in the trash or recycling. Again, unpacking is a process that you need to tackle bit by bit. Cleaning is part of that process. Here’s the best tip of all, though: Hire Kaga Movers to do your unpacking for you. Moving and unpacking services are something we’d love to help with. Let's see how many of these tips you would never have thought of; 1. Put plastic wrap over drawers so you don’t have to empty out their contents. 2. Place packing paper or paper towels between plates before boxing them to cushion them during the move. 3. Pack a first day basket with disposable plates, cups and cutlery so you can eat without digging out your dishes. You’ll be exhausted after the move! 4. Fill nail holes with bar soap if you’re not handy with spackle. 5. Use toilet paper tubes to keep wires and cables organized. 6. Put plastic wrap on toiletries under the lid to keep them from spilling during the move– guys, DO THIS! You'll think the lids are tight on several bottles until they spill out and ruin several boxes! 7. Label boxes with the contents of the box as well as the room it belongs in. 8. Pack plates vertically so they’re less likely to break. Make sure you wrap them well! 9. Don’t take clothes off their hangers. Move them in bunches in garbage bags still on the hangers. Easy and way cheaper than wardrobe boxes. 10. Use all your suitcases and bags to save money on boxes. It can really add up! 11. Put essential appliances (like your coffee maker) in a laundry basket so you can put them on your counter right away in your new place. 12. Color code each box according to room so you can identify what needs to go where in a glance. 13. Cut triangles in boxes about 1/3 of the way down to create handles for easy carrying. 14. Changing your address seems simple enough, but there are lots of places that you need to notify of the change. 15. Keep hardware organized in plastic bags. 16. Keep packing supplies in a basket that you can easily move from room to room. 17. Contain the chaos with a moving room key — a color coded guide that tells you where everything should go. 18. Invest in storage bins for holiday dÈcor and other items that stay in storage for most of the year. 19. Pack jewelry in egg cartons to keep it tangle-free and organized during the move. 20. Have a yard sale to get rid of things you don’t need. 21. Pack books in suitcases with wheels. You’ll thank KAGA MOVERS when you don’t have to carry back-breaking boxes full of books! 22. Put a rubber band around the door knob to prevent it from latching every time you carry a box out the door. 23. Remember to mark boxes with breakables as fragile. Whether you’ve hired movers or are doing it yourself, you don’t want someone to be too rough with those boxes. 24. Add some padding to your boxes. Plastic grocery bags are great for cushioning your breakables. Don’t leave room at the top without padding because otherwise they may get crushed. 25. Buy some IKEA bags! They’re lightweight but tough, so they’re perfect for moving clothes, stuffed animals, blankets, etc., and you can use them for storage when you’re done. |
