Your friend has realistically assessed his competence and skills and found himself lacking in the experience required for a seamless execution of his day-to-day tasks at the job. It is in order for him to fear that he won't live up to expectations.

What should be do?

He should make himself teachable so he doesn't fall short of expectations. The capacity to learn is appreciated by many employers.

When you don't know how to do a thing, be humble and willing to learn. Then, do a lot of independent study on the internet.

If he does the above, overtime, he'll grow to catch up on the skill. Soon after habituation has taken its cause, your friend will feel underemployed and hence seek a higher position or a company that compensates better for the same role.
