President Joe Biden has withdrawn from the upcoming presidential race, endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee. Harris’s candidacy brings significant implications for tech regulation and the future of artificial intelligence (AI) in the United States. Kamala Harris has long-established ties to the tech industry, stemming from her tenure as San Francisco’s district attorney and California’s attorney general. Her connections have earned her early endorsements from key figures in the tech sector, such as venture capitalists John Doerr and Ron Conway, and LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman. However, other influential tech leaders, including Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings, have approached her candidacy with more caution. As Vice President, Harris has advocated for stringent AI regulation to balance innovation with public protection. full story in the links: https://thenews-chronicle.com/what-kamala-harris-thinks-about-tech-regulation-and-ai/

Since Nigeria experienced its first military coup on January 15, 1966 till date, Nigeria has run governance without an actual written constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (CFRN). It only legally has a CFRN but in reality has been governed junta decrees of successive military regimes. It started with the tinkering of the 1963 CFRN when Nigeria fully became a republic without which there wouldn’t be a legal polity known as Nigeria from which the junta would have snatched political power by use of gun. The junta decrees 1 and 34 of 1966 when the military first took over continue till this day to be a burden on the democracy in Nigeria. It is not by error that no military regime from the second one of July 29, 1966 has tinkered with decrees 1 and 34 of the coup d’état of January 15, 1966 till this day. The Nigerian military failed woefully in their ethical values of being the professional managers of force and violence, but for about 60 years after the first coup, should we continue to point fingers at the military. Every home has at least one spoilt child. Such a child is known as an Àkébàjé among my people. The Àkébàjé Omo cries for meat when his mates are asking for food – Àkébàjé únsunkún eran, elegbé e rè únsunkún oúnje. When eventually given what he craves, he complains that the pieces of meat in the plate will not allow him access to the stew (wón fun léran tán, ó tún ni eran ò jé kí òhun run obè). The elders of my place have a descriptive name for such a child: Omo gede aróde tò súlé (an over-pampered brat who leaves the outside to pee inside the living room). Àkébàjé can never be satisfied. He remains implacable. He keeps asking for more like Oliver Twist. He is a child with an eerie entitlement mentality! Every family which attempts to satisfy the many fancies of an Àkébàjé ends up in ruins. One peculiar nature of an Àkébàjé is that he positions himself as an indispensable member of the family. He tells his parents that he holds the four aces. Usually, he comes in the form of either the only child or as the only male child in a society that is patrilineal and attaches importance to the male gender. In such a circumstance, the entire clan tends to pander to the wishes of an Àkébàjé. His greatest weapon is blackmail. He tells his dotting, and equally fretting parents to either satisfy his wishes or he leaves them in pain. He behaves like an Ogbanje, who can die anytime, prematurely. Whereas he has everything to lose if he dies, but the parents don’t know this! The parents of the Àkébàjé operate from a disadvantaged cum weak position. They always believe that the Àkébàjé Omo holds that which is most precious to them. The Àkébàjé knows this weakness of character in his parents. He, therefore, tightens the noose, pummelling his parents to submission, at any given time. Àkébàjé is as unfeeling as he is selfish. He is equally deft on the negotiation table. He is like the Gambler in Kenny Rogers’ song, “The Gambler”, Àkébàjé Omo /…Know when to hold ’em/Know when to fold ’em/Know when to walk away/And know when to run/. Like the gambler that he is, an Àkébàjé /knows the secret to survivin’/ But there are a few members of the clan who feel that the Àkébàjé needs to be treated with tough hands. Some others believe that the spoilt brat should be treated like any other normal child. The basic truth is that any community which pampers the Àkébàjés in its midst ends up very badly. read more

American singer-songwriter Kehlani Ashley Parrish, known as “Kehlani,” has shared that she lost opportunities and deals because of her support for Palestine. In an interview with ‘Breakfast Club’ released early Tuesday, Kehlani said, “I have experienced a lot of pushback. I’ve experienced a lot of loss. There were many things promised for this album rollout, like magazine features and brand deals, that we’re sad to lose. But at the end of the day, I don’t regret it. I can sleep at night knowing I did the right thing as an artist.” Kehlani had shown her support for Palestine in an Instagram post on May 29th and featured the Palestinian flag in her ‘Next 2 U’ video released on May 31st. “Good morning, sir, what do you think about the southwest governors’ forum and their recent collaboration efforts? Let’s leave Tinubu for a week or two and discuss other things. Man shall not write about Tinubu alone nah! Variety, they say, is the spice of life.” That came from my cousin a few days ago. It was his response to my last week’s piece, “Between our Govt and New York Times.” My cousin, a namesake, and a dyed- in-the -wool Emilokan, gave the ‘directive’. But I am going to disappoint him. Bí iná kò tán lórí, èjè kii tán leekáná (as long as one has lice in one’s head, one’s fingernails must remain bloodstained). One interesting thing about this younger cousin of mine is that he did not wait for Tinubu to celebrate his one year in office before he, like the famed Andrew of the Ibrahim Babangida’s national orientation jingle of the 90s, sold all he had, including his boxers, and japaed to the United Kingdom. Anytime he responds to defend Tinubu and his voodoo economic policies, I always draw strength in the saying of our elders that if farming is such an easy venture, no blacksmith will ever sell hoes (Oko dùn ro ni alágbède nro okó tà). Nigerians are hungry. Many of them have died of hunger and other poverty-induced diseases. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has an answer to the hunger cum poverty in the land. We are not the only hungry or poor people in the world, he told us. He spoke during the celebration of Sallah last week Monday. “Yes, there is poverty; there is suffering in the land. We are not the only people facing such, but we must face our challenges”, are his exact words. President Tinubu went further to lecture Nigerians on how to cope in a situation like this. He said hungry Nigerians must change their attitude and value system. Don’t allow me to be interpretative here. Even at the risk of doing that, I think what the President was saying is that when Nigerians are hungry, they should show the countenance of people that have eaten and filled. Or how do you interpret this: “The need (for some citizens) to change the rent-seeking mind-set and become more productive to the economy is a challenge?” He equally talked about smuggling, economic sabotage and stealing of public infrastructure. President Tinubu’s Media Adviser, Ajuri Ngelale, told us that his principal made the comments when the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, led the leadership of the National Assembly on an Eid-el-Kabir homage to the president. President Tinubu is a lucky man. He has so many fans like my cousin above. Many of them who could not cope with the woes that have been the only thing Tinubu administration hawks, and checked out of Nigeria, but keep telling us that we should be patient. This is exactly what the president said while playing host to Akpabio and his gang of amenable legislators during the last Sallah. Tinubu asked Nigerians to face their challenges. One of the most daunting challenges in the country today is hunger. Our culture teaches that once hunger is eliminated from poverty, the rest is easy (tí ebi bá kúrò nínú ìsé, ìsé bùse). Following the rising cases of Cholera in some parts of the country, the Federal Government has asked Nigerians to avoid locally made drinks such as kunu, zobo and fura to prevent cholera disease. Minister of State for Environment, Iziaq Salako, gave the advice in a statement issued in Abuja, on Monday June 24th. Salako urged Nigerians on preventive measures such as keeping their environment clean always and disposing of waste properly at designated places. “Ensure the use of clean and safe water. Water from suspicious sources should be well boiled or treated by adding one pack of chlorine solution to 100 parts. “Avoid locally prepared drinks like kunu, zobo, fura da nono, koko, fruit juice among others except it is certain that the preparation was done in a hygienic and safe manner. “Wash hands regularly with soap under running water, especially after using the toilet, cleaning a child who has gone to the toilet, before preparing food, before and after eating, and after playing with animals’. He said. The minister also called on States and Local Governments to tighten environmental health surveillance in places where food and drinks are sold nationwide. A riotous session imbrued the resumption of the Senate to plenary on Tuesday April 30th as senators fought over the seats. The plenary had commenced at about 11 am and immediately after the procession, the Senate President, GodsWill Akpabio, read out announcements, specifically the names of the lawmakers who had celebrated their birthdays while the Senate was on recess. Meanwhile, it was during the announcement that Senator Sahabi Yau (APC, Zamfara North) started to raise his voice at the Senate leader, Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central) while he in return pointed his finger at Yau as if giving him a stern warning. Swiftly after, Danjuma Goje (APC, Gombe Central) joined his colleague Yau in shouting at Bamidele and the chairman, of Senate Services, Sunday Karimi (APC, Kogi West) who was in charge of the seating arrangements. A group of over 30 Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) operating across Nigeria has faulted President Bola Tinubu’s decision to remove the Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), Dr. Solomon Arase, without stating the reasons for such removal. The group is also concerned that the removal appears to have violated the established legal procedure for the removal of the PSC Chairman. Section 5, subsection 1 of the PSC Act provides that, “Notwithstanding the provisions of Section 4 of this Act, the Chairman and any other member may at any time be removed from office by the President acting on an address supported by a two-thirds majority of the Senate praying that he be removed for inability to discharge the functions of the Office (whether arising from infirmity of mind or body or any other cause of misconduct).” Arase, a retired Inspector General of Police, who came into office in 2023 under the Muhammadu Buhari administration, was sacked from office earlier this week. The CSOs, in a statement on Wednesday signed by over 30 member groups, expressed worry that such a decision by the president further undermines the independence, effectiveness, and confidence of the Commission to discharge its mandate without undue interference as stipulated by the Police Service Commission Act. In a televised news conference on Sunday, Israeli minister Benny Gantz announced his resignation from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s emergency government. The event took place on June 9, 2024, in Ramat Gan, Israel, as reported by Reuters. Gantz’s departure from the government, as he expressed, was due to Netanyahu’s hindrance in achieving what he deemed as “true victory.” He emphasized the need for early elections to establish a government that can gain the trust of the people and effectively tackle the challenges facing Israel. Gantz stated, “Netanyahu is preventing us from advancing toward true victory. That is why we are leaving the emergency government today, with a heavy heart but with full confidence.” Following Gantz’s resignation, Netanyahu issued a brief statement urging Gantz not to “abandon the front.” Despite Gantz’s exit, Netanyahu’s ruling coalition maintains a firm grip on power, with 64 seats out of 120 in the Knesset, ensuring its parliamentary majority remains intact. The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has proposed the establishment of a National Pastoralist Commission by the Federal Government to safeguard the interests of Nigerian herdsmen. This suggestion comes amidst the ongoing debate regarding the proposed legislation to abolish open grazing and institute ranching agencies, which has generated varied opinions among stakeholders in Nigeria. NEF, through its Director of Publicity and Advocacy, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, on Sunday, argues for the need to address the concerns and challenges faced by herders through specialized initiatives, similar to those implemented for other communities in the South, such as the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and the OMPADEC. They emphasize the importance of supporting pastoral communities to enhance their livelihoods. The Forum acknowledges the necessity of transitioning from open grazing to ranching for more sustainable and modern livestock management. However, it stresses the significance of engaging all stakeholders in constructive dialogue to find a balanced solution that considers the interests of all parties involved. full story in the link https://thenews-chronicle.com/northern-elders-urge-fg-to-establish-pastoralist-commission/

At least 31.8 million Nigerians, or 16 percent of the population analyzed, are expected to face crisis acute food insecurity between June and August 2024. This projection comes from the World Food Programme, an international award recognizing significant contributions to improving food quality, quantity, or availability globally. The information was sourced from the organization’s latest June to October 2024 outlook posted on its X account. The WFP also stated that nearly 1 million people in Nigeria are projected to be in a state of emergency-level acute food insecurity. They described the five phases of food insecurity on a scale of 1 to 5, where phase 1 represents minimal food insecurity, phase 2 indicates stressed food insecurity, phase 3 is crisis food insecurity, phase 4 is emergency food insecurity, and phase 5 is catastrophic food insecurity. The statement revealed, “Between June and August 2024, 31.8 million people (16 percent of the population analyzed) are projected to face crisis or worse (Phase 3 or above) levels of acute food insecurity, with nearly 1 million people projected to be in Emergency (Phase 4). This represents a 3 percentage point increase in the number of acutely food insecure people compared to the same time in the previous year. Acute malnutrition levels remain high, above 10 percent, in the northern states (Borno, Yobe, Sokoto, Katsina, and Zamfara), with 4.4 million children and 585,000 pregnant and breastfeeding women projected to be acutely malnourished in 2024.” The WFP predicted that food insecurity would likely remain a significant concern due to a multidimensional crisis driven by weakening macroeconomic conditions, heightened insecurity, and subdued agricultural production in the northern part of the country. The Kaduna State House of Assembly and an ad hoc committee set up to review all funds, loans, and contracts awarded under the previous administration, has recommended the probe of the former governor of the state Nasir El-Rufai. The chairman of the ad hoc committee, Henry Zacharia, who presented a report of the committee’s findings during plenary on Wednesday, June 5, revealed that most loans obtained under El-Rufai’s administration were not used for their intended purpose, and that due process was not followed in some cases. Reacting to the report, Yusuf Liman, Speaker of the Kaduna state House of Assembly, stated that the El-Rufai government took a total of N423 billion, leaving the state with huge liabilities. In view of this, the committee advanced that El-Rufai and other indicted members of his cabinet be investigated and prosecuted by security and anti-corruption agencies for abuse of office through the award of contracts without due process, diversion of public funds, money laundering, and plunging Kaduna State into severe debt. full story in the link https://thenews-chronicle.com/kaduna-assembly-moves-to-probe-el-rufai-for-funds-diversion-money-laundering/

Endometriosis is a chronic, inflammatory disease characterized by tissue growth similar to the lining of the uterus (endometrium) outside the uterus. This condition commonly results in debilitating pelvic pain, and pain during menstruation, and may also lead to infertility. It affects approximately 5-10% of women and adolescents of reproductive age (15-49 years). Additionally, endometriosis is associated with symptoms such as fatigue, depression, anxiety, and an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Several compelling reasons endometriosis should be addressed in women: Pain Management: Endometriosis often causes severe and chronic pain, significantly impacting a woman’s quality of life. Effective management of symptoms through various treatments can help alleviate this pain and improve overall well-being. Infertility: Endometriosis is one of the leading causes of female infertility, affecting a considerable percentage (24-50%) of women experiencing infertility. Addressing endometriosis can potentially improve fertility and increase the chances of conception. Long-term Health Risks: Research suggests that endometriosis is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, which poses a significant health concern for affected women. It made a lot of sense that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu chose to mark, not celebrate, his first year in office. Celebration would have been termed insensitive by many, and the president would have been charged for profligacy and extravagance. Which serious or sane leader celebrates when the people he leads are in great and excruciating pains? Truth be told, the suffering in the land beggars belief. In that, I am one with the critics of the president. But we part ways when they say one year is enough – or even more then enough – for Tinubu to have cleansed the country’s Augean stable. The rains started beating the country a long time ago; unfortunately, we seemed not to have taken notice until it began to pour, if I must quote “Ogbuefi” Godwin Nzeakah (where are you?), my colleague on The PUNCH newspaper’s Editorial Board. Godwin was fond of saying it doesn’t just rain for him but that it pours! Nigerians did not take notice of – or they ignored – the incremental damage done to the country right from Independence in 1960, through the time of the first military coup in January 1966, to the wasteful years of Yakubu Gowon, who was credited with saying that Nigeria’s problem was not money but how to spend it. Oil money that should have been invested in agriculture and industrialization, thus, was wasted. Military ruler after military ruler continued where Gowon stopped, with the gap-toothed one, IBB, acclaimed for institutionalizing corruption and the “settlement” syndrome as well as destroying esprit de corps and discipline in the military. Since 1999, mention a Nigerian leader whose administration did not add heaps of rot on the country’s Augean stable? Pardon me, I am not one of those who expect a miracle or magic from President Tinubu. I know it is easier to destroy than to repair or rebuild. So, I expect that more than one year is needed before we begin to see appreciable results. But my worry is whether or not the president is headed in the right direction; whether or not he is pursuing the right policies; and whether or not he is clear-headed and deeply-foresighted as to where he is taking us. Are we heading farther into the dark tunnel? Are we sinking deeper in the miry clay? Is the president leaving the substance and chasing shadows? Unfortunately, two decisions of his which coincided with his first year anniversary got me deeply worried. The first was his decision to drag the 36 state governors to court over so-called autonomy for local governments. Just hours after Claudia Sheinbaum’s historic election as Mexico’s first female president, Yolanda Sánchez, the mayor of Cotija, Michoacán, was ambushed and shot 19 times by gunmen in the town center on Monday. Her bodyguard was also killed in the attack. Local authorities and media reports suggest that the perpetrators were likely members of an organized crime group, with the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) being the prime suspects. The CJNG is notorious for its involvement in drug trafficking, kidnapping, and extortion, and for targeting public officials who oppose them. Sánchez who had been in office since September 2021, had reported receiving death threats since taking office. In 2023, she was kidnapped by armed men in Jalisco and held for three days, during which she faced psychological terror and demands from her captors. Despite the threats, Sánchez refused to cede the town’s security to state police linked to criminal groups and instead requested military reinforcement. Two soldiers beat up not exactly to a pulp but in the full glare of onlookers and bystanders, some terrified, others not quite, and then in the global glare of the social media. Too much humiliation in a day, and within months, and signs of considerable danger for a regimented institution known for its discipline and indelible institutional memory especially with the attack in Okuama, Delta State where about sixteen military personnel lost their lives in the most brutal manner. True to form, the Nigeria army had shut down Banex plaza, a behemoth commercial hub that sits like a boulder in the heart of the Federal Capital Territory, where the assault occurred, reopening it after more than a week. If the army’s loss of face in the unfortunate situation is well imponderable, the losses of those who do business there have simply been incalculable. A pressing question Is why? Why should a relatively trivial commercial transaction descend into a fracas that has now generated more losses than imagined? Are Nigerians now shred of all dignity so as to easily eschew the simplest dictates of civility? More info in the link https://thenews-chronicle.com/banex-plaza-and-a-burst-of-brazen-illegalities/
