The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Owerri Zone, has accused the present Federal Government and the State Governors of persistently undermining the existence of the public universities in Nigeria through their systemic neglect, acute under-funding, and bastardization of university autonomy, leading to the inability of Nigerian universities to compete globally. The ASUU Owerri zone accused on Monday, during a press conference held at the ASUU Secretariat, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, with the theme ‘the unresolved issues among Federal and State Governments and ASUU and the need for urgent action to avert a crisis.’ Addressing the press conference, the ASUU Owerri Zone Chairman, Prof Dennis Aribodor, said despite the ASUU’s relentless struggles over the years to get previous and present governments to prevent universities from the current gradual slide into total collapse, the Nigerian University system is currently facing the most crucial existential threats occasioned by governments’ total neglect and abandonment. Aribodor accused the governments of concertedly planning to annihilate public universities in favor of the commercialization of university education via private universities owned by politically exposed individuals. “It appears education is not a priority for Tinubu’s administration nor is it for any of the State Governments. The Anambra State Government handed a 30-year-old teacher who allegedly beat an 8-year-old pupil to a coma to the Nigeria Police Force. The incident happened last week at Landmark School Mgbakwu in Awka North Local Government Area of the state. The State Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, who disclosed this to reporters in her office on Monday, also announced the permanent closure of the school. The school’s Proprietor and the concerned teacher, Faith Nwonye, had been invited on Monday, to explain what led to the brutalization of the primary two pupils. Addressing newsmen shortly after the meeting, the Anambra Education Commissioner explained that the school’s closure was not only based on the ugly incident but also as a result of its illegality. Expressing sadness over the development, Chuma-Udeh noted that the medical Doctor handling the case of the child, who is currently on admission, has revealed that the victim’s chances of survival is only 20 percent. Describing running an illegal school in the state as well as beating a child, as a criminal offence, the Commissioner warned that perpetrators were doing so at their peril. She said, “We received this unfortunate incident from an illegal school in Mgbakwu that a child was beaten to coma over the weekend. “On behalf of the State Government, we invited the proprietress of the illegal school as well as the teacher who purportedly beat the child. “We’ve handed the matter to the police for further investigation as we await Mr Governor’s directives. “Meanwhile, the school is closed down indefinitely because it’s not supposed to exist in the first instance More information is in the link: https://thenews-chronicle.com/teacher-who-flogged-pupil-into-coma-in-anambra-arrested-school-shut/

An electronics and telecommunications gadget market in Abuja, Banex Plaza, is still shut down following an alleged altercation between soldiers and some traders in the market. A visit to the market on Monday 20th May saw soldiers across the plaza. Some traders who assembled at a distance from the plaza were seen leaving after waiting for hours. None of them was willing to grant our correspondent audience but they were heard lamenting the cost implication of having the plaza shut on a major day like Monday. It would be recalled that, trouble started when thugs allegedly beat up some soldiers who had a minor disagreement with a trader in the plaza. According to reports, the trader had reportedly sold a bad phone to someone who invited soldiers. Meanwhile, rather than resolve the issue amicably, the trader reportedly invited thugs who assaulted the uniform men. They descended on at least two soldiers and another man in mufti. The thugs who broke into groups slapped, kicked and beat up the soldiers. More info in the link https://thenews-chronicle.com/banex-plaza-under-lock-and-key-as-soldiers-operation-enters-day-3/

Recently, we had lamented the deplorable state of the Northern region, in spite of the many God given assets of that region. It is paradoxical that whereas the region is rich in arable land and other natural resources, yet it accounts for the greater percentage in all indexes of negative growth and development. Extreme poverty lives on the streets of the north; drug abuse, increasing figures of out-of-school children, insecurity, outbreaks in diseases, the problem of almajiri etc. Place this reality side by side with the fact that the region has produced more presidents and held that office more than any other region, and has continued to insist on its grip on power. The next logical question to ask is: Of what use has the hold on power benefitted the people on the streets of the region? Perhaps, ashamed of the negative narrative on the region, some governors’ wives in the north met recently to brainstorm on how to change those narratives of gloom and deprivation. The wives of these 14 governors spent two days in Gombe brainstorming on how to support their husbands and address the challenges that have given the region a negative perception. Among issues that were in the front burner in their discussions and activities were the issues of out of school children, almajiri syndrome, banditry and kidnapping, drug abuse and the use of narcotics, insurgency, educational backwardness, poor healthcare and other socioeconomic issues. The women who met under the chairmanship of the wife of the Gombe State Governor, Hajiya Asma’u Inuwa Yahaya, told Governor Inuwa during a courtesy call at the commencement of their activities that the Gombe gathering was their first quarterly meeting. She outlined a number of challenges facing the North which the Forum, with the support of their husbands, seeks to address. Particularly, she identified the issue of almajiri and drug abuse where the Forum planned support and a public paper presentation on the dangers of drug abuse in the society. Responding, Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, expressed delight in the efforts of the First Ladies to support their husbands to uplift the lives of the people of the region whose challenges he described as one of the worst in the world. According to him, “it is very unfortunate that almost a quarter of the 21st century is gone, we are yet to key into the development agenda of the world,” stressing that, “nothing happens without education. “It is education that brings development, changes lives and brings good life to the people. Education helps to modernise, enabling us to understand God and religion. Without education, you will not even worship God well,” he pointed out. more in the link https://thenews-chronicle.com/northern-govs-wives-and-problems-of-the-region/

I read in some Nigerian dailies that if anyone would be killed for corruption that has to do with stealing from the public purse, the stealing has to be in trillions. That is to say, a stealer of a million or a billion naira is not a thief or has not stolen enough. He or she is an apprentice whose stealing should not be overlooked. Stealing in the region of a billion should be considered a tolerated thievery. This is, as reported, coming from a high-ranking senator whom I admire for his candidness—especially in calling a spade a spade—during an interview. However, I have some misgivings. Did he really say it? If any lawmaker would say that, it should not be the Ndume I know. I searched for the Channels TV interview only to confirm that Sen. Ali Ndume actually said so. It was a question about the death penalty for drug dealers vis-à-vis the condemnation of such a penalty by human rights activists. Ndume spoke passionately and logically to my satisfaction. Alhaji Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, the President of Nigeria from 2007 to 2010, would have turned 73 this May if he were still alive. But regrettably, he was taken by the icy hands of death and dropped from sight just when Nigeria most needed him. We cannot question God. As Epicurus once said, it is possible to guarantee security against all odds. But against death, all men, mortals alike, dwell in an unprotected place. President Yar’Adua was a model democrat and leader, and he could have finished as one of the most successful presidents Nigeria has ever had. That was not to be, though. From 2007 to 2010, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua GCFR led the country as president after he was proclaimed the victor of the Nigerian presidential election, and on May 29, 2007, he took office. In the past, he was a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the governor of Katsina State from 1999 until 2007. Yar’Adua travelled to Saudi Arabia in 2009 to get treatment for pericarditis. On February 24, 2010, he left Nigeria again for the same reason. His return took a long time, and on May 5, he passed away. Strong underlying performances by Nigerian telecommunications businesses listed on the stock exchange in the first quarter of 2024 were overshadowed by foreign exchange losses. Together, MTN Nigeria and Airtel Africa lost N511.27 billion, mostly as a result of the naira’s nearly 30% depreciation this year. Compared to its Q1, 2023 profit after tax of N104.65 billion ($227 million), Airtel Africa’s Q1 loss after tax was N118.57 billion ($91 million). Similarly, MTN Nigeria’s N108.43 billion profit after taxes for the same time last year is not the same as its N392.69 billion loss after taxes. Foreign exchange headwinds were the reason given by both corporations for these losses. Airtel Africa’s foreign exchange loss for the full year ending March 2024 was $549 million, while MTN’s loss for the first quarter was N575.69 billion. Airtel attributed this loss to the devaluations of the naira in June 2023 and the kwacha in Malawi in November 2023. click the link https://thenews-chronicle.com/mtn-and-airtels-fx-induced-n511bn-loss-obscures-strong-q1-performance/

President Bola Tinubu’s government is considering lifting the suspended telecom tax and other fiscal policies on Nigerians to secure a new loan of $750 million from the World Bank. According to a document published by the World Bank, the EMT levy on electronic money transfers through the Nigerian banking system, along with other taxes, is also being considered, in addition to the reintroduction of excise on telecom services. Mr. Tinubu suspended the five-percent excise duty on telecommunications and the import tax adjustment levy on certain vehicles in July 2023. However, the document revealed that negotiations were underway between the World Bank and FG to secure the yet-to-be-approved loan. The document said, “The domestic revenue mobilization drive in the government ARMOR program seeks to increase revenue on some targeted industries and sectors of the economy. Specific groups and agencies within affected sectors include the Association of Licensed Telecom Operators of Nigeria: The introduction of excise on telecom services requires that all telcos be mobilized to fully participate in the collection of such revenue. “Committee of Bankers: Introduction of EMT levy on electronic money transfers through the Nigerian Banking System would need the buy-in of all banking institutions.” It noted that the Manufacturer’s Association of Nigeria (manufacturers of tobacco products, sugar-sweetened beverages and alcoholic beverages) that would be required to collect excises on their products “are critical stakeholders” for the introduction of the new excise regime. The World Bank added, “They are currently organised into various sectoral groups under the Manufacturer’s Association of Nigeria. Producers of alcoholic beverages organised under the Distillers and Blenders Association of Nigeria also need to key into the reforms. “Also, strategic partners involved in the importation of different items into the country will be mobilised to participate in the ARMOR programme. A key stakeholder group is the Association of Nigeria Customs Agents. Vehicle Importers and Manufacturers: Stakeholders in the automobile trade industry must be engaged in reforms involving the introduction of green taxes on high GHG emission vehicles. “Local manufacturing and assembly of vehicles is growing through a phase of growth in Nigeria. The demand for vehicles is mostly met through importation by vehicle importers under the aegis of the Association of Motor Dealers of Nigeria.” The financial institution explained that services that will be subjected to the newly introduced excises “are regulated by key public sector agencies” and that the “introduction of the new revenue measures will require the application of existing regulatory mechanisms available within these institutions.” The concerned institutions include the Nigerian Communication Commission and the Central Bank of Nigeria. “There are also agencies with the mandate for making policies on some of the issues covered in the ARMOR program concerning policy framework on matters of public interest in Health and Environmental Protection,” the document stressed. “The government institutions relevant to ARMOR in this regard are the Federal Ministry of Environment, the National Environmental Standards Regulatory and Enforcement Agency, and the Federal Ministry of Health.” Outlining specific allocations for technical assistance, the document pointed out that the government program “is funded from annual budget allocations of $1.17 billion to FMF, FIRS and NCS. The PforR, with results-based financing of $730m and $20m investment financing, is 62 per cent of the program budget.” “There will also be $10m for project management, tax policy capacity-building and other expenses. In total, the amount makes the $20m investment financing before the release of $730m in line with the fiscal targets met,” it added.
