Business / Dangote Making Way For Efficient, Effective Refinery by Calmzin(m): 10:41pm On Jan 30, 2017 |
With less than 24 months to commencement of operation, the management of Dangote Refinery and Petrochemicals has said it is partnering with the Petroleum Training Institute, (PTI) Efunrun in the area of human capital development and professional certification given the group’s foray into oil and gas business. One of Dangote’s latest laudable projects is the construction of a $14 billion refinery which is projected to refine about 650,000 barrels of crude oil a day and also has the capacity to turn the 650,000 barrels of oil into gasoline, diesel, kerosene and jet fuel enough to potentially satisfy all the country’s daily needs. When completed, it could end Nigeria’s reliance on imported gasoline and diesel. The group executive director, Stakeholder Management and Corporate Communication of Dangote Group Engr. Mansur Ahmed recently said the Dangote Refinery and Petrochemicals would be more than ready to partner the PTI in the critical area of skill acquisition and human capital development. He stated that the PTI is in vantage position to provide trainings that are otherwise sought abroad and that with the economic situation in the country, PTI should be the leading light in training of personnel in oil and gas sector. Ahmed then advised the Institute Management to build a framework that will show the contents of its training modules and how they match specific needs of organizations in the sector. He tasked the Institute to come with a proposal that can lead to the formalisation of the partnership between the Group and the Institute while also urging them to take facility tour of the Dangote Refinery and Petrochemicals currently under construction so as have insight into the areas of immediate training the company would require. While, the Principal of the Institute, Professor Sunny Iyuke expressed delight that the Institute management has been able to link up with the Group eventually saying he was optimistic that the partnership would be beneficial to both parties. He explained efforts being made by the new management of the institute headed by him to redirect the institute saying it has undergone several changes in the last few months all in efforts to reposition it to be relevant in discharge of its duties in the light of the modern day technology. Iyuke made bold to say that the PTI has some of the best facilities for training in the oil and gas sector in the world and that the management was striving to ensure the facilities are deployed appropriately so that the institute would take its pride of place in the sector. He also expressed the confidence that the facilities at PTI would be of immense benefit to Dangote refinery given its unique size and scope of production and that the training and certification that the Institute would provide would be global standard. Stressing the reason why the current management moved to reposition the Institute, Iyuke lamented that it was embarrassing that over five decades after the discovery of oil in Nigeria, the country is still importing oil. Describing the situation as saddening unacceptable, he explained that PTI would need to double up and take the lead in human capital development in the oil and gas industry noting that with the local content policy of the government, the Institute has much work to do. The institute listed areas of training where Dangote Refinery could benefit from as refining process, process control, plant utilities, pipeline maintenance, catalyst and catalysis, corrosion and corrosion control, water and waste water management, power plant and a host of other spheres. Mansur recently stated that the refinery’s daily production capacity would be 150 per cent of the current total demand of petroleum products in the country, saying that the excess would be exported to other countries. He said a 1.3 million metric tonnes per annum petrochemical plant was also under construction at the refinery site in Lekki area of Lagos, saying “In addition, he said that a fertiliser company with capacity to produce 2.8 million metric tonnes of assorted fertilisers was also being added to help the country to achieve food security.” Mansur disclosed that the company had also diversified into gas business as it had started constructing a gas pipeline from the South East to Lagos. He said that the gas plant, when completed, would have the capacity to produce three million standard cubic metres of gas per annum. The executive director said the project would help the country to record appreciable improvement in power and manufacturing sectors. According to him, the company’s huge investment in the oil and gas sector will impact positively in the economy, especially in the areas of employment and preservation of foreign exchange. The petroleum industry in Nigeria is the largest on the African continent. As of 2015, Nigeria’s petroleum industry contributes about 14 per cent to its economy. In October, 2016, President Muhummadu Buhari unveiled Seven Big Wins, as part of short to medium term strategy framework with robust priorities to grow Nigeria’s oil and gas sector. The seven big wins to revamp and revive the sector will focus on key areas including Niger Delta development and security of the oil producing region; policy and regulation; business environment and investment drive; transparency and efficiency; stakeholder management and international coordination; gas revolution, refineries and local oil production capacity. The president noted that the oil and gas sector was still a critical revenue point for the country despite the drastic dip in global crude oil prices at the international market. “As important as it is to ensure that Agriculture, Solid minerals and other critical sectors of the economy are supported to grow and contribute more to the nation’s economy, we still need a virile and efficient oil and gas industry to take care of our foreign exchange requirements,” he said. http://leadership.ng/features/569153/dangote-making-way-for-efficient-effective-refinery 1 Like

We cannot allow this horror to continue.” Minority Christians have been victims of attacks in Syria and Iraq by the Islamic State since its insurgency started. Education / ASUP Begins Nationwide Strike Today- 30th January 2017 by Calmzin(m): 12:00pm On Jan 30, 2017 |
Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has insisted members will down tool by 12 noon today, to press home implementation of their demands. ASUP General Secretary, Mr. Anderson Ezeibe told Daily Sun that lecturers have been mobilised for the one week warning strike and stressed that, “by 12 noon today, we will withdraw our services, both academic and administrative jobs.’’ He said no polytechnic is exempted from the strike but noted that individual institutions should address challenges before joining the industrial action. Ezeibe said the union issued the first ultimatum on July 20, 2016 and another notification on November 14, 2016. The ASUP scribe confirmed that Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu invited the union leadership to a meeting by 12 noon today but warned that unless the issues in contention are addressed, the one week warning strike will go ahead as scheduled. Ezeibe said after the National Executive Council (NEC) in Abuja, the union served the Ministry of Education the strike notice last Thursday and they wrote on Friday inviting the leadership to a meeting today. ASUP Chairman in Federal Polytechnic, Ado Ekiti, Mr. Tunji Owoye said his members will comply with the NEC directive and added that the congress of the union is scheduled for today. He said management of the institution will be informed of the industrial action after the congress. National Coordinator of ASUP in the South-South and South-East geo-political zones, Dr. Chika Ogonwa said in Asaba, yesterday, that the union might be forced to shut the polytechnic system if the government remained adamant to their demands. Part of the demands, according to Ogonwa, was the need to review the Polytechnic Act which at present, prescribes National Diploma (ND) for middle level manpower, and explained that the nation’s economy is comatose because the players are half-baked. In a flyer which Ogonwa made available to Daily Sun in Asaba, the union during its 86th National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in August 2016 shifted the strike to January 2017, to give government sufficient time to resolve the contentious issues. In a related development, lecturers at the Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) branch, Ijagun, Ogun State have embarked on an indefinite strike to protest non-implementation of their demands by the state government. Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), TASUED branch, it was gathered, downed tools after a Congress resolution to embark on strike, in order to force the government to accede to their demands. To this end, academic, admission and research activities in the state-owned university were grounded, including the ongoing first semester examination. Chairman of ASUU in the institution, Dr. Bayo Akinsanya told Daily Sun that the issues in contention are not new demands.“We have been agitating for these issues for sometime. The university administration is aware of the strike. It is the responsibility of our governing council to talk to the state government on our demands. Our students were writing examinations when we started the strike. The first semester examinations for the 2016/2017 academic session were disrupted. “In fact, our students were to write a paper on Thursday, so the whole thing was aborted. The strike started on January 26. Since we started the strike, we have not been invited for any discussion. Throughout the duration of the strike, our members will not be involved in any academic activities.’’ The union in the statement disclosed that the issues in contention are non-payment of pension since 2007, withholding of 12 months deduction to staff cooperatives, non-payment of promotion arrears to academic staff, non-payment of earned academic allowance and the government’s insensitivity to funding of the institution. http://sunnewsonline.com/asup-begins-nationwide-strike-today/ |

Iris Mittenaere of France is crowned the new Miss Universe 2016 by 2015 Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach, Jan. 30, 2017. MANILA — A 23-year-old dental student from France won the Miss Universe crown Monday in the annual pageant held this year in the Philippines. Iris Mittenaere from the small town of Lille in northern France said in reply to a final question from pageant host Steve Harvey that she would be honored if she just landed among the three finalists, but was visibly stunned when she was announced the winner among the field of 86 contestants. Mittenaere was speechless and put her hands on her face as the outgoing winner from the Philippines, Pia Wurtzbach, crowned her as the crowd erupted in cheers and applause at the packed Mall of Asia Arena by Manila Bay. In her profile, she said she would “advocate for dental and oral hygiene” if she takes home the crown. In the final question to the top three finalists, the candidate were asked to cite a failure in their life and explain what they learned from the debacle. “I've failed several times in my life,” Mittenaere said without elaborating but added that “when you fail, you have to be elevated and you have to try again and keep going ... I have failed before but for me this is the great first opportunity.” Miss Haiti, Raquel Pelissier, a 25-year-old survivor of the devastating 2010 earthquake that destroyed her hometown, was named first runner up while Miss Colombia, 23-year-old, Andrea Tovar, was second runner up. “I survived the earthquake,” Pelissier said in reply to the same question, citing the quake the Haiti government estimated to have killed more than 300,000 people and displaced more than 1.5 million others. “I felt I was failing myself because I was not living my dreams ... But I chose to be a very positive person, and learned a great lesson from it because if I am here today, it is because I am living my dreams.” As he closed the ceremony, the American comedian host declared: “This is Steve Harvey, I got it right,” referring in jest to his mistaken announcement of Miss Colombia as the winner in the last pageant in Las Vegas more than a year ago that sparked an uproar. http://www.nbcnewyork.com/entertainment/entertainment-news/Miss-France-Crowned-Miss-Universe-in-Philippines-412108463.html

Sports / Eagles Need Ebuehi – Rohr by Calmzin(m): 9:25pm On Jan 29, 2017 |
Technical Adviser of the Super Eagles
Gernot Rohr has revealed his eagerness to
see Dutch-Nigerian full back Tyrone
Ebuehi play for Nigeria “as soon as possible”.
Ebuehi was invited for the Super Eagles
last competitive game against Algeria, but
the 20-year-old opted to remain with his team ADO Den Haag to establish himself
However, Rohr has insisted that he did get
a promise from the right-back that he
would be ready to swing it if called up.
Since taking over as coach of the Super
Eagles, Rohr has used four players at
right back in three games as coach of the
team, with three of them played out of
position to cover up for the lack of a
proper right-back.
This has sent the tactician on a desperate
search for credible options in the right
full-back role for the team; a situation he
hopes to fix with Ebuehi.
” I hope that Tyrone Ebuehi will be ready
for the next Super Eagles game we play.
We need a good right back,” he said.

Politics / How Ondo Speaker, Deputy Were Impeached, New Ones Elected by Calmzin(m): 8:54pm On Jan 29, 2017 |
The Ondo State House of Assembly Speaker, Princess Jumoke Akindele, a member of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) representing Okitipupa, was on Friday sacked by her colleagues along the deputy speaker, Fatai Olotu. Their sack it was learnt, took place outside the Assembly premises after 15 PDP and five All Progressives Congress (APC) members out of the 26 members of the House voted for their impeachments from office. The Assembly has been in a crisis situation since March 2016 when the Speaker and her deputy were first impeached by 18 out of the 26 members over their alleged highhandedness. Their removal was however overturned after Governor Olusegun Mimiko intervened in the matter. Following their sack on Friday, the Ondo State House of Assembly immediately elected Coker Malachi who represents Ilaje 1 state constituency as the new Speaker with Ayo Arowele representing Owo constituency as deputy speaker. Their sack is coming barely a month to the inauguration of a new governor in the state, Rotimi Akeredolu. https://www.ripplesnigeria.com/ondo-speaker-deputy-impeached-new-ones-elected |

Foreign Affairs / China Ushers In Year Of The Rooster by Calmzin(m): 5:58am On Jan 28, 2017 |
Happy Lunar New Year! China celebrates the year of the rooster. Lunar New Year celebrations took place all over China, welcoming the year of the rooster. One of the main celebrations featured 11 Chinese astronauts. Hundreds of millions of Chinese celebrated the Lunar New Year Friday into Saturday, with many tuning in to the "CCTV Spring Festival Gala." The television show was on many Chinese screens Friday night, a spectacle lasting for more than four hours and included skits, music and dance. The show has been a yearly tradition since 1983, but has been criticized for being too nationalistic and praising the Communist party. The main celebration of the night included 11 Chinese astronauts in front of a large Chinese flag, who introduced themselves and placed their hands in clay molds. The molds will later be displayed in a museum. "Our space flight ranks are increasingly growing in strength," said Yang Liwei, the first Chinese man ever in space. "We welcome even more people to join our ranks, to build our country into a strong space nation." Also included in the patriotic celebrations were five revolutionaries who fought in China's civil war in the 1930's and a military choir singing in front of a screen showing fighter jets on China's first aircraft carrier and what appeared to be a Chinese occupied island in the South China sea. Chinese swimmer Fu Yuanhui, who became known for her pool-side interviews at the 2016 Summer Olympics performed a comedy routine and a donkey bowed on command and offered his hoof to shake hands with a performer in the lighter parts of the show. Fireworks and lunch No new year's in China would be complete without fireworks. Cities across the country featured their own fireworks shows to ring in the year of the rooster. Another traditional event took place in the Liuminying village. A lunch that began sponsored by the local branch of the ruling Communist party in 1980 has grown into a three hour show including singing and dancing for more than 1,000 people. |
Health / Scientists Found The Key To Predicting A Baby's Sex by Calmzin(m): 4:32am On Jan 28, 2017 |
Scientists may have found the key to predicting A Baby's Sex. If the internet and old wives’ tales are to be believed, there are endless ways to predict the sex of your baby prior to the 20-week ultrasound. Are you carrying low? Craving sweet or salty foods? What does the ring and needle test say? Of course, none of those are accurate. But a provocative new study suggests there might be an easily identifiable physiological marker that predicts whether a woman is more likely to be carrying a boy or girl: Her blood pressure before pregnancy. In the study, women who had boys tended to have higher systolic blood pressure prior to pregnancy (106 mmHg) than women who had girls (103 mmHg). And while researchers say it shouldn’t be viewed as any kind of crystal ball just yet, they argue that the strong relationship between maternal blood pressure before pregnancy and a baby’s sex offers new hints about how human biology works. In the study, published in the American Journal of Hypertension on Thursday, researchers tracked a group of more than 1,400 women in China before pregnancy and after, testing their blood pressure, triglycerides, cholesterol and glucose levels. Dr. Ravi Retnakaran, an endocrinologist at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, told The Huffington Post. The only thing that was related was pressure,” he continued, “but blood pressure was strongly related. I think the way to look at this is that it may be telling us something very new about [our] physiology. —Dr. Ravi Retnakaran What this all suggests, the researchers contend, is that a mother’s blood pressure before pregnancy is likely a marker of something in her physiology that makes her more likely to successfully carry a boy or girl to term. It is not, however, a causal relationship. One of the things we don’t want is for people to look at this and think, ‘Oh, we can manipulate the blood pressure before pregnancy and thereby change the chances of having a boy or a girl.’ We definitely are not saying that, because we are not showing cause and effect,” Retnakaran said. Moreover, we don’t believe it’s cause and effect. We think it’s a marker of the underlying physiology. In other words, mothers-to-be certainly shouldn’t be scouring their pre-pregnancy medical charts in order to try and glean what their baby’s sex is ― for now. At this point, the findings are simply interesting because they may be revealing something new and interesting about human biology, and something researchers need to continue to explore. I think the way to look at this,” Retnakaran said, is that it may be telling us something very new about [our] physiology. |
Romance / Simple Things Men Want From Women But Probably Won’t Say by Calmzin(m): 4:03am On Jan 28, 2017 |
There are certain things a lot of men would love their women to do, but they might never tell her. They probably won’t tell you because they don’t want to pass the message of being too needy. Men don’t want to be perceived as being too demanding and being insensitive, so they act like they are okay — but do not be deceived, every man wants the following: 1. Greet him with a smile when he comes home. Don’t greet him with a frown, attacks, a list of things to do or a quarrel because of things he didn’t do. 2. Buy him something to wear that is in line with his taste: Whether a tie, a belt, a shirt, a wrist watch, cologne and such. Something that each time he wears it, he will think of you more. Men love it when that special woman makes them look good and smell good. 3. Pray for him while he is listening. Any man will be humbled by that. 4. Praise him in front of the child/children. Say to them “Your dad is really amazing” and such. He will feel more secure and in charge at home. 5. Straighten his tie. Offer to not only unbuckle his belt when undressing him to make love; but also to buckle it when he is dressing up. This shows you love him for more than sex. 6. Praise his penis; no matter its size. The penis is the one organ men easily get self-conscious about. The more you praise his penis, whether he has a big or small one or he climaxes too quickly or not, the more he will be confident in bed. You are the only one who gets to see and touch his penis, so make him a confident man in bed. 7. Randomly send him a message to his phone telling him something special like “I am proud to be yours”, “There’s no other man I would rather be with”. A man in love wants to get that from the one he is in love with. 8. Buy him a book that will build him, a book he perceives will make him a great man. A book on politics, or governance, or business, or inspiration, or spiritual growth; whatever his interests or needs are. This shows him you are concerned about his growth. 9. Take him out on a date sometimes. Ask him when he is free and treat him. Dates are not only for the men to plan. Pamper him sometimes. 10. Find out his favourite meal and prepare it often. Sit down and eat with him. Men get close to the one they eat with. 11. Kiss his cheek. Yes, the kiss on the lips is the most important; but there is something innocent and assuring about a kiss on the cheek. 12. Organize his life. If there is one thing a woman is good at, it’s organization. Be that wife/woman he confesses “I don’t know what I would do without you. With you in my life, everything falls into place”. 13. Don’t dress up so well when you leave the house yet dress poorly when privately with him. Your greatest focus should be to appeal to his eyes in private. 14. Lovingly ask him for help occasionally even when you can do it by yourself. Men love to feel needed, like they are heroes. 15. Befriend his friends. Don’t fight them. Show him that you know your position in his life and that you are above his friends to compete with them. Don’t withdraw from them, make appearances that will make his friends affirm to him how he is blessed to have you. 16. Tell him you believe in him. That you believe in his ability to find a solution when he feels stuck or when storms come. You may not give him advice but just this confidence in him will inspire him. 17. Seduce him. Be sexually aggressive. Be the woman who places his hands on your bum, rubs your butt on his central business district, plays with his nipples, touches him in a sexual way, pursue your husband sexually. Men love it when their hardness is on demand by the woman they are faithful to. 18. Be the source of his peace. In all you do, ask yourself “Am I giving him peace?” Men often start wars between nations and outside homes but women often start wars at home when their expectations are not met, when they feel hurt or when they want to prove a point. Lady, even if he doesn’t do everything the way you want; making his time with you to lack peace, giving him silent treatment, giving him your sneers, banging of doors, coldness and bickering will not make him improve; all that will do will make him avoid being near you. 4 Likes 2 Shares |
Phones / Do Smartphones Really Charge Faster In Airplane Mode? by Calmzin(m): 3:42am On Jan 28, 2017 |
If you're a heavy-duty smartphone user — which includes just about everybody these days, since the average Nigerians spends 4.7 hours a day gazing at and tapping that little screen — you know how agonizing it is to have to stop looking at cat videos for a while and plug your phone into a charger to replenish the battery. And some phones can take hours to charge. But you can reduce your separation anxiety a bit by following this tip: While charging, switch your phone to airplane mode, so that the phone won't slow down the process by continually burning energy trying to connect with cell phone towers and plot your location with its GPS function. This trick actually works, and so dependably that mobile provider Verizon recommends it. The reason why is that while your phone is in its regular mode, it's continually trying to signal cell towers and pinpoint your location. And even though your phone most likely has assisted GPS, which calculates your location coordinates using the cellphone network rather than satellites, the function still burns up a lot of juice . That's because the location-finding stops your phone from going into full-on, energy-saving sleep mode. When you switch to airplane mode, you turn off reception of those radio transmissions, and as a result, your phone charges more quickly. A middle school teacher who admitted having 'near-daily sex' with a 13-year-old pupil has been jailed for 10 years. Alexandria Vera, 24, claimed the boy's parents were happy that their son stayed over at her house and even approved of her keeping his baby when she fell pregnant by her child lover. The paedophile's relationship with the young lad even extended to the classroom, said a fellow student, who witnessed the boy grabbing the teacher's bottom in front of class-mates. State District Judge Michael McSpadden, jailing the school Miss from Houston, Texas, said: "We want our educators to teach our students. "We want them to keep their hands off the students." The judge said the sentence, which was reduced from 30 years after Vera admitted a lesser sex abuse charge, sent out a clear message. Vera told law enforcers she was impregnated by the boy after meeting him as an eight grader at her summer school English class in 2015, reports Daily News. A therapist speaking on Vera's behalf told the court : "I think she was driven by being in love with him." Investigators said Vera, who had an abortion , had sex with the boy 'near-daily' on an almost 'continuous basis'. The case made headlines last year after Vera briefly went on the run before turning herself in. She was released on bail and caused a stir when she was spotted jogging around the running track at the school where she seduced the lad. http://www.sde.co.ke/m/article/2000229950/school-teacher-who-was-impregnated-by-13-year-old-pupil-jailed |

Health / High Dose Of Vitamin C Kills Cancer Cells, Says New Research by Calmzin(m): 9:35am On Jan 15, 2017 |
High dose of vitamin C fights cancer cells but are
harmless to healthy cells, a new research has
shown.
A study conducted by researchers from the
University of Iowa, U.S., found that vitamin C
creates hydrogen peroxide, a reactive oxygen
species that causes damage to tissue and DNA.
Cancer cells are much less capable of removing
this damaging hydrogen peroxide than normal
healthy cells are, according to the research.
The researchers say high doses of vitamin C
administered intravenously could help fight off
cancer when used alongside standard
chemotherapy and radiation treatments.
According to the study, high doses of vitamin C
can bypass the stomach, which enables more of
the nutrient to enter the bloodstream.
“In this paper we demonstrate that cancer cells are
much less efficient in removing hydrogen peroxide
than normal cells. Thus, cancer cells are much
more prone to damage and death from a high
amount of hydrogen peroxide,” says Garry
Buettner, a professor of radiation oncology.
“This explains how the very, very high levels of
vitamin C used in our clinical trials do not affect
normal tissue, but can be damaging to tumor
tissue.”
Researchers intend to test the treatment on
pancreatic and lung cancer patients alongside
standard chemotherapy or radiation, to ascertain if
there is an improvement in outcomes.
It is hoped that high doses of vitamin C may
someday become a standard treatment for cancer.
The new research was published online in the
journal Redox Biology.

Foreign Affairs / Muamar Gaddafi's Prophecies by Calmzin(m): 8:59am On Jan 15, 2017 |
Muamar Gaddafi's Prophecies: "I will not go into exile to any foreign country. I was born here in Libya, and I will die here. This country was a dessert, and I turned it into a forest, where everything can grow. No one Love this land more more than its citizens. If Europe and America tells you that they love you, be careful. They love the wealth of your land. The oil and not the people. They are helping you to fight against me but, it will be more wise for you to fight against them because they are fighting against your future and progress. My message to you the people of Libya is, they are helping you to kill me but you will pay the price because you will suffer. And my message to you America and Europe is, you will kill me, but be ready to fight a never ending TERRORISM. Before you realise your ignorance, terrorists will be hitting you at your doorstep." GADDAFI only erred in my opinion when he once told the Nigerian and British governments to divide Nigeria into two, so that the Hausa/Fulani (Moslems), Yoruba (Christians) and Biafrans/Igbo, can live as neighbouring countries. It's good we look at these 16 REAL REASONS WHY COL. GADDAFI WAS KILLED: 1. There is no electricity bill in Libya, electricity is free for all its citizens. 2. There is no interest on loans, banks in Libya are state-owned and loans given to all its citizens are at a 0% interest by law. 3. Home is considered a human right in Libya. Gaddafi vowed that his parents would not get a house until everyone in Libya had a home. 4. All newlyweds in Libya receive $60,000 Dinars (US$50,000) from the government to buy their first apartment. 5. Education and medical treatments are free in Libya. Before Gaddafi, only 25% of Libyans were literates. Today, the figure stands at 83%. 6. Libyans taking up farming as a career, they received farm land, a farming house, equipment, seeds and livestock to kick- start their farms – all for free. 7. If Libyans cannot find the education or medical facilities they needed in Libya, the government funded them to go abroad for it. 8. In Gaddafi's Libya, if a Libyan buys a car, the government subsidized 50% of the price. 9. The price of petrol in Libya is $0. 14 per liter. 10. Libya has no external debt and its reserves amount to $150 billion – now frozen globally. 11. If a Libyan is unable to get employment after graduation, the state would pay the average salary of the profession as if he or she is employed until employment is found. 12. A portion of Libyan oil sale is credited directly to the bank accounts of all Libyan citizens. 13. A mother who gave birth to a child under Gaddafi, received US $5,000 as child benefit upfront. 14. 40 loaves of bread in Libya costs $ 0.15 Cents. 15. 25% of Libyans have a university degree. 16. Gaddafi carried out the world’s largest irrigation project, known as the Great Man-Made River Project, to make water readily available throughout the desert country. If this is called "Dictatorship", I wonder what type of Leadership Democrats have!! |
Education / The 20 Weirdest Words Added To The Dictionary Because Of Technology by Calmzin(m): 8:40am On Jan 15, 2017 |
Whether we like it or not, dictionaries are living, breathing documents, and new words are added to them regularly. Although the Oxford English Dictionary editors get the final say, they actually look to us to dictate whether a word should be added. In other words, we have no one but ourselves to blame for all the weird words that make the cut every year. But we can at least share the blame with technology. None of us would be saying "srsly" if we hadn't felt the urge to shorten words for text messages and emails. We wouldn't be voting anyone off the island if not for the television series Survivor. And, perhaps most importantly, there would be no need for the word "meatspace" without the existence of the virtual world. (One could argue there is still no need.) Want to see what weird words were added to the OED thanks to internet slang and technology? Read on. 20 Weird Words Added to the Dictionary Thanks to Technology 1) Screenager (n.) A person in their teens or twenties who has an aptitude for computers and the internet. "Clever games designers have worked out exactly how to push the buttons of screenagers in the way other media have failed to do." 2) Meatspace (n.) The physical world, as opposed to the virtual world. "I'd like to know a little more before we get together in meatspace." 3) Slacktivism (n.) Actions performed via the internet in support of a political or social cause but regarded as requiring little time or involvement, (e.g. signing an online petition or joining a campaign group on a social media website). "Such email alerts make slacktivism easy." 4) Al desko (adv. & adj.) While working at one's desk in an office (with reference to the consumption of food or meals). "An al desko lunch." 5) MOOC (n.) A free course of study made available over the internet to a very large number of people. "Anyone who decides to take a MOOC simply logs on to the website and signs up." 6) Netiquette (n.) The correct or acceptable way to use the internet. "Should there be some kind of protocol or netiquette associated with directing large volumes of traffic to other websites?" 7) Dox (v.) To search for and publish private or identifying information about a particular individual on the internet, typically with malicious intent. "Hackers and online vigilantes routinely dox both public and private figures." First World problem (n.) A relatively trivial or minor problem or frustration (implying a contrast with serious problems such as those that may be experienced in the developing world). "It's a First World problem, but still if you're staying at a 5-star resort you expect some decent service." 9) Srsly (adv.) Seriously. "Srsly though, I see where you're coming from." 10) Cyberchondriac (n.) A person who compulsively searches the internet for information about particular real or imagined symptoms of illness. "Everybody is terribly health-conscious these days -- it's not a surprise that many people are becoming cyberchondriacs." 11) Lamestream (adj. & n.) Used to refer contemptuously to the mainstream media. "Why as the lamestream media been so silent on the issue?" 12) Gigaflop (n.) A unit of computing speed equal to one billion floating-point operations per second. "He said the latest terascale supercomputing system has several hundred gigaflops of sustained power." 13) Fat finger (n.) Used to refer to clumsy or inaccurate typing, typically resulting from one finger striking two keys at the same time. "The programming problem turned out to be a case of fat finger." 14) Nom nom (exclamation) Used to express pleasure at eating, or at the prospect of eating, delicious food. Foreign Affairs / ECOWAS Will Take All Necessary Actions In Gambia, Says UN Envoy by Calmzin(m): 12:18am On Jan 15, 2017 |
UN office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS) says ECOWAS has decided to take all necessary actions to enforce the results of the December 1, 2016 presidential election in the Gambia. Mohamed Chambas, head of UNOWAS, disclosed this while briefing the UN security council on the political and security situation in the region. Chambas is also the special representative of the UN secretary-general. He pointed out that there was progress in West Africa and the Sahel, but warned of the region’s political challenges. The UN envoy cited a “rising tide of democracy” throughout the continent, noting that a number of countries had recently held elections which largely complied with electoral norms and standards. Referring to the presidential elections in the Gambia, and the ensuing crisis, Chambas said: “However, some countries in the region had witnessed political uncertainty or significant security challenges. “We were saddened by the quickly unfolding political crisis resulting from President Jammeh changing his mind and deciding to reject the results.” He updated the 15-member council on the initiatives to resolve the situation there taken by ECOWAS that agreed to uphold the elections results and decided to take all necessary actions to enforce the results. “UNOWAS is fully involved in supporting the ECOWAS-led mediation, which continues to explore all avenues towards a peaceful transfer of power,” the UN envoy added. secretary-general’s West Africa and Sahel envoy also informed council members of elections in Cape Verde and Ghana as well as in Guinea, where polls anticipated to be held in February had been postponed. In his briefing, Chambas also spoke of the continuing security and humanitarian challenges in Nigeria due to frequent attacks perpetrated by Boko Haram. He appealed for more funding and support for relief programmes in the country. Chambas updated the council on UNOWAS’ close collaboration with other UN missions in the region and in the context of the drawdown of the UN missions in Côte d’Ivoire, and Liberia. He added that it worked on issues related to regional stabilisation, technical support and in the implementation of its Resolution 2282 (2016) and the General Assembly Resolution on sustaining peace. -TheCable |
Romance / My Girlfriend’s Mum Is Pregnant For Me, But It’s Not My Fault by Calmzin(m): 10:49pm On Jan 14, 2017 |
Nigerian man cries out A cry for help from a desperate young man, who impregnated his girlfriend's mother, but actually didn't mean to do it. "My name is Elvis. Please, I need you to look at this situation that I’ve found myself and tell me if I’m wrong: I got a house for my girlfriend out of my parent’s house just because I wanted us to have our privacy before we get married. I am always going there to spend the night most times and she did not tell me that her mother is very young and beautiful; a single woman. But one day I went to "our house" and she introduced me to her mum, the woman really liked me. But I didn't know that it’s not just like, but love. One day my girl was on night shift in the hospital where she works and her mum called me around 7:30 and told me that I should come to the house, as she wants to see me before she goes back. I came and she told me she is bored and that I should spend the night with her and stay till my girl is back in the morning so we can both take her to the park to return to Asaba. I agreed and at night she woke me up from the chair and asked me to join her in bed… My heart skipped but she said she just don’t want me to have neck pain by sleeping on the chair till morning. I followed her to the bed and in less than five minutes she has taken off her wrapper and was with me under the blanket. I understood what she wanted and by looking at her bare body I was already in the mood, so I slept with her, like 3 times before morning and I even enjoyed her more than her daughter. When she left, my girlfriend was angry that I spend the night in "our house" with her mum without telling her but I told her it was her mum’s idea and that I did not complain since her mum told me that I would stay till she got back from work. I lied to her that nothing happened, that’s my mistake. Her mum called me after last Christmas and told me that she was pregnant for me and that we should tell my girl so that her daughter can "look for another man". The woman wants to marry me. My girlfriend is aware now and she is cursing me, threatening my life. But is it my fault? Pls I’m confused!" Dear Nairaland readers, help the young man to find out what to do! |
Foreign Affairs / From Next Week, We’ll Cease To Recognise You As President, AU Tells Jammeh by Calmzin(m): 8:09am On Jan 14, 2017 |
The African Union (AU) will cease to recognise
President Yahya Jammeh as the nation’s
legitimate president from January 19.
It is the date he is due to hand over to Adama
Barrow, winner of 1 December election.
The AU’s peace and security council made this
declaration after a meeting in Addis Ababa, the
Ethiopian capital.
The council also warned of “serious consequences
in the event that his action causes any crisis that
could lead to political disorder, humanitarian and
human rights disaster, including loss of innocent
lives and destruction of properties”.
The AU declaration came on a day President
Muhammadu Buhari led a delegation of West
African leaders to Banjul, Gambian capital, with the
aim of persuading the soldier turned politician, to
hand over power to Barrow.
Jammeh’s political party, in the latest gambit, has
gone to court to halt the inauguration of Barrow,
on the basis that Jammeh’s challenge of the
electoral result has not been decided by the
country’s supreme court.
The case was adjourned for months because the
court could not form a quorum.
Meanwhile, opposition politicians are trying to
propose some offers to encourage Jammeh to
leave peacefully. |

Business / Efforts To Save The Naira Have Crumbled, Says IMF by Calmzin(m): 8:44pm On Jan 13, 2017 |
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) says
efforts to save the naira by rationing foreign
exchange have gradually crumbled.
The IMF also said the challenges around foreign
exchange in Nigeria have pushed inflation to
double digits in Africa’s largest economy.
This is coming a year after Christine Lagarde, IMF
managing director, met with the main players in
the Nigerian economy, including Kemi Adeosun,
minister of finance; Godwin Emefiele, governor of
the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and President
Muhammadu Buhari.
Lagarde, at the time, called for subsidy removal
and devaluation of the naira — both of which have
been done.
In its policy paper on macroeconomic
developments and prospects in low-income
developing countries (LIDCs), unveiled on
Thursday, the IMF said the failures in the economy
were due to “delayed/poorly managed policy
adjustment”.
“There were sharp movements in currencies across
many LIDCs during 2015. Further sizeable
depreciations were recorded in 2016 in commodity
exporters under stress,” the paper read.
IMF said this includes “Mongolia, where reserve
levels have been significantly eroded, and Nigeria,
where efforts to support the naira through foreign
exchange rationing have gradually crumbled”.
“Inflation has risen to troubling levels in a handful
of cases, concentrated in sub-Saharan Africa.
Among commodity exporters, large exchange rate
depreciations were a key contributor in
Mozambique, Nigeria, and Zambia”.
The IMF blamed the failures on lack of business
confidence in conflict zones and delay in policy
adjustment by the country’s leadership.
“Domestic policy failures cited include delayed/
poorly managed policy adjustment to lower
commodity prices — as in Nigeria, where foreign
exchange rationing adversely affected debt service
capacity of many corporates.
“Nigeria (is) affected by Boko Haram-led attacks in
the north and disruptions to oil production in the
Niger Delta region. Aside from direct damage and
increased security outlays, conflict situations
undermine business confidence, investment, and
tourism.”
The fund also said Nigeria’s financial
developments affected neighbouring countries like
Chad, which also plunged into a recession, and
Benin.
“External developments have predictably played an
important causal role in the emergence of financial
sector stress, through falling commodity prices,
declining remittances, and adverse spillovers from
neighbors — as in the impact of Nigeria’s
economic difficulties on Benin.
“That said, teams’ assessments indicate that poor
macroeconomic policies and weak supervision
have also played a significant contributory role. |
Crime / REVEALED: Number Of Nigerian Women Trafficked To Italy Almost Doubled In 2016 by Calmzin(m): 8:20pm On Jan 13, 2017 |
The International Organisation for Migration (IOM)
has reported that the number of Nigerian women
travelling by boat from Libya to Italy almost
doubled in 2016, with majority of them being
victims of sex trafficking and exploitation.
According to IOM, approximately 80% of the 11,009
Nigerian women registered at landing points in
Sicily in 2016 were trafficked, as against 2015
when 5,600 women were registered by the IOM,
and 2014 when 1,450 Nigerian women were
registered at landing points in Sicily.
“We have seen a huge increase in the number of
Nigerian women arriving last year,” said Carlotta
Santarossa, a counter-trafficking project manager
for the IOM.
“According to our indicators, we believe the
majority of Nigerian women who are arriving into
Italy are victims of trafficking and are likely to end
up exploited in Italy or other European countries.
In Italy, the numbers are too high to provide all of
them them with the services they need.”
The organisation said the increase reflected a
dramatic rise in the overall number of Nigerian
men, women and children being registered at
landing points in Italy. Figures from the agency
show that 37,500 of the 180,000 migrants arriving
in Italy by sea last year were Nigerians, the first
time they had eclipsed Eritreans as the largest
national group. The total number for 2015 was
22,000. About 3,000 of the 37,000 Nigerian
migrants were unaccompanied minors.
Alberto Mossino, director of Piam Onlus, an anti-
trafficking NGO working with Nigerian migrants,
said the increase in Nigerians arriving by sea was
an indication of the power of the highly organised
trafficking gangs operating alongside Libyan
militias to control migrant flows from north Africa.
“Before, migrants could arrive alone in Libya and
make their way by boat to Europe,” he said.
“Now, it is too dangerous: there is civil war and it
is only the Nigerian and Eritrean trafficking gangs
who are able to transport large numbers of people
through the country, where militias are controlling
the borders and ports.
“These are not smuggling gangs, their intention is
to exploit and profit from the migrants they are
transporting along the way, and women are the
most lucrative cargo.”
Among those questioned by the IOM, 49% reported
having being held in a location against their will,
often for ransom. The majority of the cases
occurred in Libya.
“Libya is a black hole at present, from a
humanitarian point of view – all migrants arriving
from Libya have faced violence and human rights
violations,” said Flavio Di Giacomo, a
spokesperson for the IOM in Italy.
Mossino said existing anti-trafficking services were
at gridlock, with the Italian government providing
only 1,600 places for victims of trafficking at
specialist shelters.
“If there are 11,000 women arriving in one year,
there is simply no way of providing them with any
help or security,” he said. “There is nothing we
can do to help them.- Thecable |

U.S President-elect, Donald Trump has, during his
first press conference after his election, said to the
American popular media organization, The Cable
News Network (CNN), ” “You Are Fake News” for
publishing an unsubstantiated report about Russia
having compromising information on him.
Trump then unleashed on Buzzfeed, another news
media which alone published the 35-page memo
behind the Russian allegations, saying “ Buzzfeed
which is a failing pile of garbage… will suffer the
consequences ”
And then, in an even more stunning episode,

With Trump looking to call on other reporters, Jim
Acosta yelled out, “Since you are attacking us, can
you give us a question?”
“Not you,” Trump said. “ Your organization is
terrible!”
Acosta pressed on, “You are attacking our news
organization, can you give us a chance to ask a
question, sir?” Trump countered by telling him
“don’t be rude.”
“I’m not going to give you a question,” Trump
responded. “Don’t be rude. I’m not going to give
you a question. You are fake news!” Trump
responded, before calling on a reporter from

Politics / Fayose Ejects Federal Agencies From Offices by Calmzin(m): 1:26pm On Jan 12, 2017 |
Ekiti - Ekiti state government on Wednesday evicted the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, (NSCDC) Ekiti State command and other Federal ministries and agencies from their various offices. The News Agency of Nigeria,(NAN) reports that they were evicted from Fayose Housing Estate, located along Afao Ekiti Road in Ado Ekiti, the state capital. The estate, which housed federal establishments such as NSCDC, Prisons Service, NAFDAC, NOA, NABTEB and others, was built by Fayose during his first term in office as a governor of the state and was named after him. The Public Relations Officer of NSCDC, Ekiti state command, Tolu Afolabi confirmed the development to newsmen in Ado Ekiti. According to him, the state government had earlier given a year grace to all the ministries and agencies to look elsewhere for accommodation or buy the property as the state could no longer give out its property free of charge in view of the biting economic situation in the country. “The period of grace ended on the 31st of December, 2016 after which a letter of eviction was served on the occupants of the estate “The letter said failure to quit the property would result being dragged to a rent tribunal “With this development, NSCDC officers in the state have been trying to cope with the situation and we are urging well meaning Nigerians to assist the Corps “It should also be noted, however, that not only Civil Defence was evicted by the State Housing Corporation from the property as being peddled in some quarters but all the federal agencies in the estate”, he said. - NAN http://m.news24.com.ng/Nigeria/National/News/fayose-ejects-federal-agencies-from-estate-20170112 |
Politics / Nigeria Severs Diplomatic Ties With Taiwan, Shuts Its Abuja Office by Calmzin(m): 12:57pm On Jan 12, 2017 |
The federal government yesterday announced that
Nigeria will be severing its diplomatic ties with
Taiwan and that the Taiwan diplomatic office in
Abuja should be relocated to Lagos where it will
now serve as as Trade mission.
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, who
disclosed this at a news conference in Abuja
yesterday, said this became necessary following
the Federal government's decision to pledge
support for ‘One China’.
According to Onyeama, Taiwan is not a country
that is recognized under international law as it is
just a small island nation 180km east of China.
According to him, having any diplomatic ties with
Taiwan as against China which is the country, is
against international law and practice.
Moreso the One China police been supported by
the Federal government stipulates that any
government that would want to seek relations with
the People Republic of China must severe its
relationship with the Republic of China also known
as Taiwan.
“Taiwan will stop enjoying any privileges because
it is not a country that is recognized under
international law and under the position we have
taken internationally, we recognize the people of
China. Taiwan will not have any diplomatic
representation in Nigeria and also they will be
moving out of Abuja to Lagos to the extent that
they function as a trade mission with a skeletal
staff. Chinese government does not oppose trading
with Taiwan as such as long there is no formal
contact with the government that will suggest
recognition of Taiwan as sovereign country” he
said
He said Nigeria was not forced to take the
decision, adding that the country recognized the
People’s Republic of China as a country because
Nigeria was one of the leading African nations that
fought for China to reclaim its seat at the UN
Security Council from Taiwan.

Romance / 10 Warning Signs To Spot A Wife Beater by Calmzin(m): 11:08am On Jan 03, 2017 |
Every day, stories of husbands beating up their wives mercilessly abound. They posit it's done to put some real senses into their stubborn heads. These shameless men also believed there can never be two equal masters in the same house. Sadly, these women had to endure these abusive relationships, putting up with different forms of domestic and physical abuses. Perhaps, these women are in it because of their children, maybe because they love the man or because they're certain that someday, he'll change. Yet, nothing improves; nothing changes. There is this notions and misconceptions; this backward and forward debates between the male versus the female superiority complex: the gender debate to put it more succinctly. There's also this archaic belief that the male is supposed to be the head of the home while the female is supposed to be the neck. Some shameless men had begun to abuse this notions and misconceptions. They see it as an opportunity to maltreat these poor and vulnerable women. Unfortunately, a lot of them have ended up in untimely graves. Now, how do you spot a wife beater? 1. They've anger issues When a man is always prone to outburst without any justifiable cause, know that he'll raise his hand (s) someday to hit you. Men are less emotional beings than women so the only way they can express themselves is through shouting or throwing tantrums. Probably, these men have issues that have piled up for months or years. These issues could have forced its way to the forefront when the nervous system couldn't tolerate it any longer. It's like a balloon bursting to shred when it has gotten to its limit. What should be done? The men should be subjected to counseling either from their Pastor Imams, or an experienced psychiatrist. 2. They've inferiority complex Any man who raises his hand to hit his wife is a coward. He has an inferiority complex. No matter what a woman does to you, you shouldn't make her your punching bag. When a man can't take advise from his wife, then something is amiss somewhere. Some men always want to dominate. 3. When they avoid you like a plague When a man is always avoiding you, know that all isn't well. If you're the talking type who like to bother him, please stop it. He might be going through some emotional issues. Instead, inquire from him why he's in such foul mood. Pamper him like a baby, massage him gently and dig deeper into the many reason(s) he's isolating himself. Men are compassionate too. But if you go the wrong way, you might provoke him to hit you. Most of the issues bothering him might be from the office environment, from traffic gridlocks, or from crazy drivers. 4. He might be considering a divorce The first sign you notice from him, apart from isolating you is that a divorce matter could be beclouding his sense of reasoning. Sometimes, he doesn't eat the food you cook. He comes home late at night and he's always on the phone 24/7 chatting with his girlfriends. Because he doesn't know how to pass his issues across, the best he could do is to either punch, slap or worse, manhandle you. 5. You're not good in bed Ladies, you see, we men love to explore. If you don't give him what he wants, he'll avoid you and look for somebody else who can satisfy him real good. Some young girls who're adventurous will give him what he wants. These little devils are super-pro. Then he starts keeping late nights. He starts spending the money meant for home on these girls. Your children's school fees will remain pending. Meanwhile, he's spending all the money meant for house keep on his concubines 6. He's always intoxicated When he starts getting drunk, something he doesn't do before, please know that there's an issue bothering him. He gets home, his shirt is rumpled and stinking like a sewage tank. Eyes as crimson as zobo drink. He has foul mouth odor. Then you question him where he's coming from. He gets provoked; slaps and abuses you. Perhaps, something deep inside has been bothering him which you fail to notice. 7. He's psychologically imbalance Stress might be one of the reason he's hitting you. The stress would've degenerated into something beyond his control. He needs help ASAP. Let him see a doctor (psychiatrist) who'll evaluate him thoroughly and recommends the right therapy. Although his ego wouldn't allow him to admit his psychological challenges, you need to persuade him. If he refuses, get the assistance of an elderly person, probably his parents, uncle or aunt. Anybody he respects a lot. 8. They don't admit their faults Abusive men don't always admit their faults. They feel they're always right. Therefore, they'll beat up you when you try to correct their mistakes. Men who're egoistic are very hard to bend and plead. They don't respect women. They don't value their wives warnings and advice. They see women as trash who should be disposed as at when due. Men who beat women to a pulp are in that category. They're good men outside but terrible husbands at home. Such men can do and undo. 9. They've friends just like them Birds of the same feather flock together. This expression might sound cliche, but that's the perfect words I can use to describe men like that. They congregate at a particular spot and discuss anything under the skirts. These men are womanizers. They've different sets, shades and sizes of girlfriends. 10. They're ungodly Men who beat their wives are ungodly. They don't go to church on Sundays. They don't pray with their families and they don't want to have anything that has to do with the preaching of the gospel. Anytime a man of God comes to share the words of God, they've one form of excuses or the other to give. These men don't have the fear of God in them. It only takes the grace of God to pull such men from the dark pit to His presence. They don't respect women especially their wives. What women with such husbands should do is continue to put them in prayers. Commit them to His hands. Pray and fast. With God all thing are possible. |
