Crime / Lagos Trader Rapes Neighbour’s Daughter Inside Toilet by Campushint(m): 11:11am On Jun 16, 2015
A 27-year-old trader, Lucky Bassey, has been arrested by the police for allegedly raping his neighbour’s daughter, Ruth (pseudonym) in the Bariga area of Lagos State. Both the suspect and the victim live in the same house on Akilo Street where the incident happened.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the 12-year-old victim was using the toilet penultimate Monday, when the suspect forced the door open and subsequently raped her.

Their correspondent was told that the victim’s mother observed that she could not walk properly after she left the toilet. She interrogated Ruth, who told her mother that Bassey had raped her. The matter was reported at the Bariga Police Division and the suspect was subsequently arrested.

Ruth, a primary six pupil, told the police that Bassey had sex with her while standing. She said she could not tell how long the sexual assault lasted, but in the end, the suspect threatened to deal with her if she told anyone. She said:

“I was in the toilet on Monday, May 25, around 8pm, when I heard a knock on the door. I told the person at the other side that I was using the toilet. But brother Bassey forced the door open and closed my mouth to stop me from shouting.

We were both standing when he raped me. He said I should not tell my mother about it or he would deal with me.”

The mother told PUNCH Metro that she observed that after she left the toilet she could not walk properly. She said it aroused her curiosity and she interrogated her daughter for information.

“I called her and asked what happened to her. She told me that Bassey raped her.”

She said she reported the matter at the police station, leading to the arrest of the suspect. After the rape, Ruth bled for a week. She was reportedly rushed to a general hospital in the state where she was treated before the bleeding stopped.

The result of some tests conducted on her, which was sighted, stated that there was a forceful penetration into her private parts “which affected her clitoris and labia majora.”

The victim’s mother said Bassey’s family members had been asking her to forgive the suspect.

“We are both from the same village in Calabar, Akwa Ibom State. We also live in the same compound in Lagos. His people have been asking us to forgive him. Even our landlady has also begged me. But I have told them it was no longer within my power and that the government has taken over the case. I don’t know why it will be my daughter of all people that he will do this to when there are many prostitutes out there that he can have sex with.”

However, the suspect denied raping the victim. He said:

“I don’t know what she is talking about because on that day, I did not enter the toilet as she claimed and I did not rape her.”

The Police Public Relations Officers, Kenneth Nwosu, when contacted, confirmed the incident.

He said, “We arrested the suspect and he has been remanded in the Ikoyi Prison after being charged to court.

Politics / Aregbesola Sacks Uniosun Vc, Dvc by Campushint(m): 3:41am On Jun 12, 2015
The Osun State Governor, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola, has approved the termination of the appointment of the Vice Chancellor of the Osun State University, Prof. Bashiru Okesina. This was contained in an excerpt of the White Paper released on the crisis rocking the university. The excerpt was made available on Thursday by the media aide to the Governor, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon.
Aregbesola also accepted the recommendation for the dissolution of the Governing Council headed by Prof. Gabriel Olawoyin (SAN) but the council will still be in place until the process of the appointment of a new vice chancellor of the institution is completed.
The termination of appointment of Prof. Siyan Oyeweso, who is a deputy vice chancellor was also contained in the document. He was sacked for playing negative roles in the crisis.
He also warned the Chairman of Academic Staff Union of Universities at UNIOSUN, Dr. Oluseye Abiona for using the union for selfish purposes. Abiona was also relieved of his appointment as Coordinator of the Centre for Renewable Energy in the university.
The document read in part, “The Prof. A. B. Okesina-led Management should be terminated by relieving the Vice-Chancellor (Prof. A. B. Okesina), Registrar (Dr. J. O. Faniran) and Bursar (Mr. F. A. Lasisi) of their positions in Osun State University immediately.

“The appointment of Prof. Siyan Oyeweso should be terminated for: his negative roles in the crisis, his ambition-driven over-influence on the Vice-Chancellor which contributed immensely to the Vice-Chancellor’s irredeemable mistakes in the administration of the University.
“Prof. Wasiu Alamu Gbolagade should not be allowed to hold any position of responsibility in Osun State University for: his roles in the crisis, attending the two clandestine meetings against the Governing Council held in the Vice-chancellor’s house with other Principal Officers of the University.

“Prof. B. R. Olorede should be disallowed from holding positions of responsibility in Osun State University for the next five (5) years.
“The Bursar, ( Lasisi) Prof. Kizito Folorunso, Prof. Wasiu Alamu Gbolagade and any other person yet to refund the money paid to them as IGR proceeds should be made to make the refunds with immediate effect.”

The governor was silent on the panel recommendation that the six campuses of the university be reduced to three. The panel stated that the multi-campus nature of the university was having negative impact on it.

Education / Imo Poly Expels 389 Students Over Exam Malpractice by Campushint(m): 9:45pm On Jun 11, 2015
The Imo State Polytechnic, Umuagwo in Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area, has expelled 389 students over alleged examination malpractice and admission racketeering.

Speaking exclusively to our correspondent in Owerri yesterday, Madu said that some of the affected students engaged in examination malpractice, some did not enter the school through the right way while some others failed to abide by the institution’s rules and regulations.
The Rector maintained that measures have been put in place to fish out all those who entered the institution through the backdoor, stressing that anyone caught will be shown the way out.

Fr. Madu, who reaffirmed the institution’s zero tolerance for examination malpractice, cultism and other vices, said the management is poised to repositioning the polytechnic so that its graduates can effectively compete favourably in the labour market.

He said the era of sorting/ bribery for admission is over and charged students and those seeking to enter the school to concentrate on their studies so that they can earn good scores by merit rather than by hook and crook.

Politics / Presidency Debunk Rumours On Buhari’s Delayed Relocation To Presidential Villa by Campushint(m): 3:17am On Jun 10, 2015
The Presidency has described as baloney the rumours being circulated that President Muhammadu Buhari refused to move into the Presidential Villa because of purported advice from Senegalese spiritualists.

In a statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, the Presidency expressed “utter embarrassment at such suggestion,” saying that President Buhari is a practising Muslim who believes his fate belongs to God.

According to the statement, no true believer combines faith in God and reliance on the power of ordinary mortals, who can neither protect themselves, nor protect others from the hands of fate.

Malam Shehu said the so-called “spiritual cleansing of the Aso Rock Villa by Senegalese marabouts before President Buhari moves into the villa” was the figment of the imagination of rumour mongers.

The statement said it was ridiculous to attribute President Buhari’s delay in moving into the villa to any advice from fictitious marabouts.

According to Shehu, renovation works in the villa was largely responsible for the delay in Buhari’s movement into the Presidential Villa.

Crime / Nigerian Student Dies In US Police Custody by Campushint(m): 10:01am On Jun 09, 2015
Matthew Ajibade, a 22yr old Nigerian college student, has died in police custody. His death provoked his family and they are propulsion to know about what led to his jail death.

Matthew died in an isolation cell, after he “became combative during the booking process,” according to a release from the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office in Savannah, Georgia. During the altercation, officials say, three deputies were injured, including a female sergeant who suffered a concussion and broken nose. That doesn’t square with family members’ description of the 22-year-old, whom they described as a much-loved “geeky kid.”The Nigeria native was in Savannah studying computer science.

Ajibade’s family has hired Mark O’Mara, a CNN legal analyst who once represented George Zimmerman in the death of Florida teen Trayvon Martin. The attorney hopes to see “discourse of all available information as soon as possible,” he told CNN on Tuesday.

Ajibade was diagnosed with bipolar disorder three years ago and was having a medical emergency at the time of his arrest and confinement, O’Mara said. Savannah police arrested Ajibade on January 1 after receiving a call about a domestic disturbance. When police arrived, they witnessed Ajibade holding a woman under a blanket, according to an incident report. Police uncovered the two and noticed that the woman’s “face was bruised, and her nose was bleeding,” the report says. Officers ordered Ajibade to release the woman, but he did not comply, the report says, adding that when police tried to arrest Ajibade he proceeded to “resist apprehension in a violent manner.”

He was accused of domestic violence act, battery and obstruction of an officer. “The sergeant is still on medical leave. The other two remain on duty status,” said Chief Deputy Roy Harris. A woman who he identified as his girlfriend tried to inform police of his mental health issues, O’Mara said. “She also gave police a bottle of his medication,” the attorney told CNN. The police report notes that officers received a prescription bottle from the alleged victim, but the name of the prescription has been redacted. Once at the jail, officials say, Ajibade had to be restrained, during which he injured the three officers. He was then moved to an isolation cell due to his “dangerous behavior,” a police news release says. Deputies conducted welfare checks on Ajibade and on their second check he was found nonresponsive, police say.

First aid was administered by the jail’s medical unit staff. Despite CPR and attempts to restart his heart with a defibrillator, Ajibade could not be revived, according to the release. It’s unclear how much of the event, if any, was captured on the jail’s surveillance system, or whether officers conducted a mental health evaluation before Ajibade’s death. County officials declined CNN requests for an interview, citing the ongoing investigation. The sheriff’s office has requested that the Georgia Bureau of Investigation conduct an independent investigation.

A GBI spokesperson said an autopsy had been conducted, but that a cause of death was pending toxicology reports. The Chatham County District Attorney’s office said a criminal investigation is ongoing and the office will “handle the matter further, should it become necessary.”
