You are partly right and partly wrong.

You are right because programmers do spend most of their time writing one form of algorithm or another to solve their daily problems

You are wrong because in other for a programmer to solve more complex problems he needs to apprecite and understand how classic algorithms tackle problems.

So infact classic algorithms and AI algo like the MiniMax shown by logica are like a foundation to developing your own more complex variations if required. A good understanding of how they work will give you a very solid incite as to how you can approve a similar problem. You might not implement the algo exactly as it is done , but you will be able to borrow ideas which you can incorporate.
