PoliticsRe: Sanwo-olu, Ezekwesili Clash Over Makoko Demolitions by CAPITALBEE: 8:25am On Jan 21
The allegations of NGOs profiting from the Makoko situation wouldn't be a thing if the government had sanctioned a conscionable effort to resettle this people in the first place.

Let's not forget that Makoko community is divided into two; Makoko on Land and Makoko on water.

Regardless of how the govt tries to justify the demolitions, here are the major issues.
1. Makoko on water - Never should have existed and the activities done by people in the area, is the major cause of water and air pollution in that area. There is no day you use the Third Mainland bridge when you are not greeted with a foul burning smell and untidy looks of the Lagoon owing improper sewage/waste disposal. No NGO efforts have yielded a positive result despite decades of intervention. Instead, it continues to get worse by the day. Besides, Lagos generally has a waste problem... Misses Gov. Ambode.
2. Makoko on Land - Simply put, the 50 meters setback for buildings along the Lagoon is non-existent and there have been some systemic encroachment too. This I have seen from my visits to the place.

LASG has battled with the dilemma of either controlling the aforementioned or leaving the menace to continue given the public outcry and international scrutiny they may face.

This move signals that they just couldn't stomach it anymore and had to make a move.

BusinessRe: No Bank Is Allowed To Debit Your Account Over Loan Repayments Unless... by CAPITALBEE: 7:27am On Dec 10, 2025
giftson102:
There is one banking truth in this country that will shock you. And the banks will never tell you this.

Because it is one of the biggest tools they use to debit people’s accounts without warning.
And Nigerians, out of fear and ignorance, think it is normal.

But this is not normal. It is illegal. And you can sue the bank or report them to CBN.

Let me explain it clearly.

You see that thing that someone will send you money and the bank will automatically deduct or take all of the money for loan repayment?

By law, no bank in Nigeria has the right to debit your account for any loan repayment unless you signed a written debit mandate.

Not “verbal agreement.”
Not “you applied on the app.”
Not “the loan officer said so.”
Not “you clicked accept.”
Not “we assumed you agreed.”

Even if you are owing Billions, there must be a clear, documented, signed mandate giving the bank permission to take money from your account before they can legally do so.

This is a Central Bank of Nigeria consumer-protection rule, and it protects Nigerians from unauthorized deductions, intimidation, and exploitation.

So why do banks get away with illegal debits?

Because most Nigerians don’t know the law. (I don’t know why no musician has produced “Show Me the Law Song” we need such a song because most Nigerans don’t know the law.)

Most people don’t know they even have this right.
Most don’t know debit mandates must be signed physically or digitally with proper documentation.
Most don’t know they can challenge the deduction.
Most don’t know they can demand the signed mandate.
Most don’t know the bank must refund if the mandate doesn’t exist.

So the banks take advantage of the ignorance.

They debit you from another account.
They take money from your salary account.
They clean out your savings.
They go into dormant accounts.
Some even enter joint accounts.
And when you complain, they intimidate you with technical language.

“System flagged your account.”
“Your BVN is linked.”
“It’s part of the loan terms.”
“It was in the app.”

But the law remains:

Without a signed, specific debit authorization, the bank has no legal right to touch your money.

None.

What you can do starting today:
-Ask your bank to show you the signed debit mandate on any loan you owe.

-If they cannot produce it, request an immediate refund.

-If the bank refuses, report them directly to CBN Consumer Protection: cpd@cbn.gov.ng

-Attach your bank statement and complaint.
-CBN usually forces the bank to refund the unauthorized deduction.

Banks fear CBN queries more than anything else.

Know your rights, but most importantly, pay your debts.
Your analogy speaks lien and set off on assets within same bank.

For this, the terms and conditions page on the account opening forms you filled with your bank during onboarding has already protected your bank from any liability. The loan agreement and terms also provide additional protection.

However, when it comes to GSI (Global Standing Instruction) where set off is required and done on your accounts with other banks, you will be required to sign off on that separately... This is usually embedded as part of the loan agreement and terms when applying for credit.

Given your budget at the time, it could have completed a moderate percentage but not the full project - this also depends on your business model actually.

However, I hope you were able to proceed and eventually complete this project?

PoliticsRe: Macron Unveils Jersey, Other Gifts For Tinubu (Video) by CAPITALBEE: 7:32am On Dec 02, 2024
Dapromzy333:
French President Emmanuel Macron presented Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu with a symbolic gift during Tinubu’s state visit: Kylian Mbappé’s iconic number 10 France jersey.

The gesture underscores the strong diplomatic relationship between the two nations, News360 Nigeria reports.

The number 10 jersey, famously worn by the Paris Saint-Germain star, holds special significance given Mbappé’s global appeal and the deep passion for football in Nigeria.

In a video shared online, Macron proudly displayed the jersey, saying, “Number 10 like [Kylian] Mbappé,” bringing smiles from President Tinubu.
Macron's message is hidden in plain sight... First, was the choice of song - "Taste the money or Testimony". Second is this diplomatic gift - "Nigeria marks the 10th African country that France will be establishing such unwholesome relationship with".

We've seen how the exploitative pacts turned out for a number of the French colonies already!

Africa will be delivered someday eventually!

PoliticsRe: It’s Unfair For Lagos, Rivers, FCT To Have 70% VAT Proceeds – FIRS Boss by CAPITALBEE:
Adopting the derivation principle in the allocation of VAT revenues between the federal and state government is the way to go. Those governors can kick all they want!

CodeTemplarr:
Is Kano consuming alcohol when they take VAT from alcohol? That formula is fair enough if we must grow. The north wants VAT shared by consumption but get VAT from what they do not consume presently. How does lagos get rewarded for absorbing the pollution that goes with value-addition(manufacturing)?
👉🏻 Are you for or against? Your stance here is a bit confusing.
👉🏻 Which of the formula are you also referring to - the former or latter?

Believe it or not, there are people in Kano and other Northern states who still consume alcohol and besides, alcohol is not the only VAT generating item.

Josbreed:
Why can't CNG be sold to gas plants where cooking gas are sold? How about it.
Recipe for disaster... CNG at fast-fill stations is often stored in the vessels at a high service pressure (4,300 psi) so the dispenser can deliver it to a vehicle quickly. This significantly differs for LPG, as the pressures are very low compared to CNG.

PoliticsRe: Over 40% Of Nigerians Now Enjoy 20 Hours Regular Electricity Supply – Minister by CAPITALBEE: 9:43am On Sep 30, 2024
Kobojunkie:
There are approximately 26 million homes in Nigeria, and 40% of that is 10.6 million homes. The Minister of Power wants us to believe that it supplies 20 hours of electricity per day to a whole 10,600,000 households using just 5,500MW of electricity which he claims the country generates. No be juju be that one? undecided
Electricity supply has improved in some quarters in Nigeria tbh, we can't neglect the fact that increased gas supply to the very many thermal plants has contributed immensely to this improved supply (Only a few percentage of the electricity generated come from the hydroelectric power plants - for those mentioning rainy season) - The segregation of consumers into different bands, mass metering agenda, and the imposition of a bilateral agreement between the discos and gencos is part of the few changes the ministry of power has initiated over the years to remove notable bottlenecks and further spur improvement in the sector.

👉🏻 To the assertion of the Minister of Power that 40% of electricity consumers enjoy not less than 20hrs power supply - A report from statistica says the total number of electricity consumers registered with the eleven discos stands at 12.6million as of September 2023. Given this, only about 5.04million consumers across the country are been referred to here.

👉🏻 This in itself is still very poor given how much improvement is ideal in the sector taken cognizance of the number of Nigerian homes and businesses that need to enjoy steady power supply to spur economic growth.

PoliticsRe: FG To Toll Lagos-ibadan Expressway, Second Niger Bridge, Others by CAPITALBEE: 8:06am On Sep 27, 2024
All trunk A roads that have been newly constructed or rehabilitated and deemed working (good security, lighting, and load capacity) should be tolled with a substantial allocation made to FERMA for maintenance, while the rest should be channeled into the rehabilitation of other existing trunk A roads and the construction of new ones where need be.

Toll payments should be paperless... FG can borrow a leave from the Touch and Pay system adopted by Lagos and Oyo state government.

Quarterly assessment of fund utilization should be done by FERMA for transparency and accountability.

Not a thing went wrong. Electric BRT buses are still running in Lagos and some commuters ignore petrol powered BRT just because they want to use the electric BRT.

The electric BRT never had any plans for swapping stations for the public because its charging stations are solely for the electric BRT
