khalids:
Thanks bro....I dropped you a message on whatsapp. Major problem is my 2008 Toyota camry v6 transmission is leaking.
This was detected after two different times of changing transmission oil by two diff mechanics...Then a 3rd observed that my transmission was leaking and said it was from the rubber seal between the shaft and gear box....This was changed and again we are still observing leaks ...now i am being told to replace the shaft....

Pls help...cos these fellows are just driving me crazy
You need to be sure that they are using the original and right type of drive shaft oil seal. They should also check to see if the seal stays tight on the shaft before installation. The contact points of the seal and shaft must be rust free and smooth. Sometimes while working of inner cup cv joints, artisans use very tight vice grips to hold the shaft. These may bruise or deform the point of contact and likely damage the oil seal lip while in rotational motion.
Autos › 6 WARNINGS!!! Check That Car Before You Buy ( Graphic Content) by cardoctor(op): 8:53pm On Jun 23, 2025
I am a professional automobile technician and I carry out Car Pre-purchase Inspections within the Federal Capital Territory.

As the economy bites hard on everyone these days, the last thing you want to do is make a financial investment into a car that almost immediately becomes a money pit.

With a decent budget Nigerian used car going for between N3.5m and N10m, it will be foolhardy to spend so much money on a car without observing the due diligence involved in a purchase of such.

I personally have observed in recent times some of my new customers coming in with cars that they have recently bought and have seen better days, badly maintained and unkempt.

All these vehicles have racked up very high mileages with knocking or rattling engines (Engine Malfunction Lamp On), bad transmissions, engine oil/ transmission oil/ water leaks, bad suspension system, faulty electrics, cheap paint jobs on badly panel beaten putty filled bodies. Cracked windscreen, rusty undercarriage, worn out tyres, bad alignment, aircondition fault, worn out grubby interior just to mention a few.

I discovered that most of these victims of Lemon cars don't usually carry out proper checks and inspection and end up paying before inspection.

Once the payment is made to the seller and documents signed, you are on your own. Most sellers will hardly refund after the deal is done and would most likely not accept any more liabilities on the vehicle. Thats when it dawns on you that the car was probably sold due to these defects which usually end up being highly uneconomical repairs and frustration at the mechanics workshops ever so often just to get it running and looking right again.

The warning here is to always take along with you an all-round mechanic or professional car inspector who knows what to look out for and if possible one who has a diagnostic scanner.

Follow this step by step guide to avoid stories that touch the heart.

1. ENGINE INSPECTION:

Check that the bonnet opens properly and bonnet stand or struts are holding well. Inspect the engine bay thoroughly then start engine and let it warm up for up to 3 minutes and observe engine noise, smoking and incessant rattling.
These could indicate worn out engine components in the engine block or the cylinder head(s) that are no longer in tolerance fit and may include crankshaft or camshafts, connecting rods, timing chain and adjuster, roller bearings , power steering pump, engine water pump etc. Check for whitish or black smoke from the exhaust on rev up or blowing out from engine surroundings, exhaust components, dipstick plugs or oil filler cover when removed (these are indications of worn out piston rings or bad valve stem oil seals). Also observe for engine misfire from bad ignition coils, spark plugs or injector nozzles.

2. ENGINE ELECTRICS:

Check that harnesses are well secured including making sure that sockets and plugs connectors are not broken or damaged and well connected . Check for naked wires left open and untaped. Check that the Starter motor (Kickstarter) cranks without hesitation and not sounding rough from grinding of the starter cogs and engine flywheel. Check that alternator is charging the battery well (This can be done by removing one of the battery terminals while engine is running). If engine shuts down after carrying out this procedure then alternator may be faulty. Check fuse box for damaged fuses and bridged wire connections.
Check that fan is not in continuous operation with engine off and ignition on. This could also mean that the coolant thermostat has been removed.
Use an OBD2 scanner and pull out any fault codes and check indicated faulty components thoroughly.

3. INTERIOR ELECTRICS:

Check that headlamps, direction signal indicators, rear lights all bulbs are in good working order. Check that wipers and screen washer operations and wiper blades are in good condition.
Check instrument cluster for warning lights, control switches, interior lights, electric windows, seats, sunroof and radio are operating normally. Check that aircondition is cooling efficiently and cabin blower fan working without noise and blower speed settings accurate. Check that Power Steering (including Electric Power Steering) is working and turning smoothly by starting up vehicle and turning steering full lock left and right. Also use the opportunity to check for excessive play in steering rack and tie rod ball joints.
Check that switches for door locks, electric window, sunroof, electric mirrors, boot/ bonnet opener and remote key fob functions well.

4. EXTERIOR UNDERNEATH:

Check that body of vehicle is in good condition and not badly dented and not rusty. Check for accident damage repairs to chassis by looking underneath (preferably on a ramp or pit). While on the ramp or pit, check for excessive corrosion and badly done weldings on undercarriage sills. Check conditions of exhaust and catalytic converters. Also check for leaks of engine oil, transmission oil, power steering oil and any coolant leak.
Check for worn suspension bushings, engine seats, shock absorber leaks and excessive play due to worn ball joints and tie rod connections.

5. EXTERIOR BODYWORK:

Check that paintwork is in good condition and not faded. Check for thick body filler patches on body. (This an obvious indicator for previous accident damage repaired so also check for quality of repair). Check for cracks on plastic front and rear bumpers, headlamps and rear lamps. Excessively damaged repaired bumpers may be prone to further cracking that could damage the paint work. Check for cracked windshield and windshield wiper scratches. Check that doors, bonnet and boot lids all open and close well. Check that sunroof (if fitted) is not leaking by observing water marks from the interior roof lining. Check that vehicle locks properly on remote key fob and key blade. Check conditions of tyres and rims for bends or kerb damage.

6. TEST DRIVE VEHICLE:

First check engine oil level, brake fluid, power steering, transmission oil, brake and radiator coolant levels.
Allow engine to warm up to operating temperature and observe the following before embarking on a test drive.
Check fuel gauge function. Check temperature gauge, indicator lamps, Check Engine Light (CEL) and any warning lights on instrument cluster for function and malfunction and diagnose with a OBD scanner. Check for engine vibration with air conditioner on and off. Check conditions of drive shafts by turning and moving vehicle forward at full steering lock on both left and right turns and observe for CV joints crackling noise on full lock. Observe and test that brakes and parking brakes are effective. Observe that transmission doesn't engage aggressively without delay and selects without hesitation. Check for acceleration and engine performance as well as gearbox shifting. Also observe for vibration on engine acceleration while in motion (This may indicate worn out inner cup CV joints). Also check for excessive vibration from tyres and wheels at speeds of over 100kmph. Also observe wheel alignment and vehicle is not pulling to left or right side. Check that steering doesn't vibrate, squeal or grind on braking.

7. CONCLUSION:

All this observations could well influence your choice, bargaining advantage and help reduce the buying price of the vehicle and avoid pitfalls.

Thank me later and good luck on your new car purchases.

House, I need help!

My 2006 Honda Accord doesn't engage in drive when you put it in D for 3 seconds if the engine has not warmed up. This does not happen when it's fully warmed up, even if it is put off and parked for about an hour, until it is cold again. This has happened to my reverse before, but it does not do that when engaged in reverse again.

We scanned the car, but nothing emerged from the gearbox.

What could be wrong, and what is the solution?
Typical situation such as this is a result of very high viscosity Automatic Transmission Fluid. There are no DTCs references for this so it wont appear as a fault code on a scanner.

Flush transmission fluid and replace with Original Honda ATF Z1 or DW1 and transmission filter and thank me later.
