Jobs/Vacancies / 15 Common Job Interview Questions For Freshers And How To Answer Them by careernaija: 4:00pm On Apr 03, 2017
Do you have a job interview and you are wondering how to pass it?

Do not fret.

90% of people are usually nervous before job interviews and this has nothing to do with how experienced you are or not. The only difference might be your level of preparation. So in this post, I will share with you the common job interview questions for fresher’s and how you should answer them.

Basic interview questions and answers

#1: Tell me about yourself:

When an interviewer says “Tell me about you”? What do they mean and what are they expecting to hear.

This question is one of the self-introduction interview for freshers and it is an opportunity for you to set the tone of the job interview. Your focus while answering this question should be your professional work experience similar to the position you are being interviewed as well as academic history if it is relevant to the position. Emphasize the points that you want this potential employer to know most about you.

It is not necessary to talk about your family history, religion and political affiliate. You can leave those out for a social gathering. When you start with and talk only about personal information you will give the interviewer reasons to doubt whether you actually need just a job or you need the particular job.

#2: Why did you leave your last job?

There must be a rational reason for every action. There must be a reason you applied for the specific job. In reality, the basic reason for job application is majorly to pay bills or the pay is bigger than what you currently earn, or you are tired of your current role especially if you do the same thing every day. But the truth is, you cannot say these at a job interview. Rather you can impress your interviewer by saying the main reason you applied for the job is to contribute what you have learned over the years from your experience in the field. You can add that you have a passion for that role and that you also want to learn more from other people you will work with while performing your duty.

#3: What experience do you have in this field?

This is to ascertain if you are academically, professionally and skillfully qualified for the role. There are times candidates study science-related courses and end up claiming they are qualified for accounting or HR roles this may be possible if you have some professional qualification in the field and have actually explored the field well. But when a candidate has no experience whatsoever and no knowledge about a role, it will be a disqualification. If the employer will eventually hire you, it means he will have to train you from the beginning which will incur more cost on the organization. Just as Steve Job said “it doesn’t make sense to hire smart people and tell them what to do; we hire smart people so they can tell us what to do”. Once you are qualified, capitalize on the specific qualification related to the job role.

#4: Do you consider yourself successful?

There will be a temptation to jump at this question even in a sarcastic tone. Even if you are not successful, you will not want to portray that you are not successful. The question does not end at yes. What the recruiter is expecting is the reason why you consider yourself successful. Your response can be derived from your strengths, your skills and ability to do things in specific ways, it can also be derived from past glory that is if you have being awarded or given a leadership position before. You can also emphasis on how you have led a team of people to deliver a project if you have done that before

#5: What do co-workers say about you?

This is interwoven into what your employer think about you. Are you reliable, dedicated, punctual and efficient? Do you colleagues feel comfortable working with you and can you lead a team with little or no supervision? The employer needs to know how you relate with people at work since you will be spending most of your time in the office. You may need to get heads up from your previous colleagues. Ask them to describe you and take down the things they have to say.

#6: What do you know about this organization?

All the interviewer wants to know is how prepared and interested you are in the company. It is wise to always do your research about the company before you go for an interview there. Spend a lot of quality time on their website that is if they have one and their social media pages. Look for their mission and vision. Check out their board of directors and management team. Know their products and services and know all you can about the department or unit you will likely work.

#7: What have you done to improve your knowledge in the last year?

This question is to determine if you are comfortable with what you have achieved or you aspire to know more. Have you improved academically, professional and skillfully in the past one year, have you developed yourself in anyway? You can start by saying all the things you have learnt in the past one year, from there, you can include even the books you have read or even articles or any publication that is increased your knowledge.

#8: Are you applying for other jobs?

You can answer this question honestly by saying yes but emphasize that of all your applications, the current interview you are having is the biggest and your target job. However, you do not need to disclose the other companies you are applying or how many applications you are applying. This is to ensure you do not appear as a desperate random job seeker.

#9: Why do you want to work for this organization?

There must be a rational reason for every action. There must be a reason you applied for the specific job. In reality, the basic reason for job application is majorly to pay bills or the pay is bigger than what you currently earn, or you are tired of your current role especially if you do the same thing every day. But the truth is, you can not say these at a job interview. Rather you can impress your interviewer by saying the main reason you applied for the job is to contribute what you have learnt over the years from your experience in the field. You can add that you have a passion for that role and that you also want to learn more from other people you will work with while performing your duty.

#10: Do you know anyone who works for us?

Be sure of the organization and structure before attending an interview. Some organizations love and pay for good referrals while some will take it as you are bribing your way into the company. Ensure you find out what the company expects before answering. This is the reason you have to practice your answers before attending an interview. You can also answer by saying how the person you know talks highly of the organization and your wishful thought or dream of working with them.

Jobs/Vacancies / How To Write Effective Cover Letters by careernaija: 4:17pm On Feb 16, 2017
It is an easy mistake.

You see a job advert and you know you are qualified. In excitement, the next thing you do is send your cover letter and CV to the hiring manager.

Right?

No, don’t ever do that.

First impressions matter a lot but when you send your application without paying considerable attention to the cover letter, then you are missing a good chance to create a good first impression.

The good news though is that writing an effective cover letter that gets the attention of the hiring manager is not rocket science.and can be learnt.

That is exactly the focus of this article. Help you understand what a cover letter is and how you can write a good cover letter anytime you are applying for a job vacancy.

So what is a cover letter?

What is a cover letter?

A cover letter for a job is a letter of introduction that introduces you to the potential employer stating why you are the perfect candidates for the job roles advertised.

Now that we have gotten the definition of what a cover letter is, let us look at why a cover letter is important and how you can write one.

Before we progress, let me tell you Mary’s story.

I met Mary about 8 months ago and immediately I saw her, I knew something was wrong. Over coffee, she explained how she was frustrated with her job search. She has sent her CV to different recruiters and she has not heard back from them. So she was worried about what she might be doing wrong.

Of course, it did not take a seer to know precisely where the issues are. If you keep sending your CV to recruiters and you are not getting an invite for interview, it simply can be one of two things.

Either you are sending to the wrong person or your CV is not catching their attention.

But before a recruiter reads your CV, there is an introductory letter that accompanies a CV. That introduction letter is what is known as a cover letter and it is your perfect opportunity to get your foot in.

Do Cover Letter Still Matters to Recruiters?

When sending a resume, writing a good cover letter is important. This is because apart from the fact that some job advert specifically requires you to send a cover letter, recruiters like Susanne still believes cover letter are important. According to her cover letters are your one chance to explain who you are, not just what you’ve done. While it’s true that some recruiters and hiring managers don’t look at cover letters, many do. And among those that do, a strong cover letter can make the difference between getting an interview and being ignored.

What Are the Basic Features of an Effective Cover Letter?

An effective cover letter should contain the following features:

It should be specific to the job role advertised.
It should not be more than 1 page. In fact the shorter the better
It should accompany your CV

Heineken’s Dutch breweries are located in Zoeterwoude, ‘s-Hertogenbosch and Wijlre. The original brewery in Amsterdam closed in 1988, is preserved as a museum called Heineken Experience.

• Tell us a little about Heineken.
• What is the current business challenge your company is facing right now and how are you working against it in your role?
• What is a good business decision you have made recently?

Jobs/Vacancies / Ten Unbelievable Resume File Names Job Seekers Use by careernaija: 11:42am On Jan 12, 2017
The first contact a recruiter has with your application is the mail which includes your resume attachment.
The name and format you save your resume will determine if a recruiter will even bother to open it or not. Why shoot yourself in the leg by making a simple but big mistake.
Applicants are not only ignorant but also consider this insignificant when it is actually a big deal.
Here are ten samples of resume file names I came across not online but in my mail box in the past one week:
1. Current resume.
Like seriously!!! Are you trying to tell me this is latest version of your CV? You can do better.
2. Isaac(3)(7)-1(1)(1)(1)(1)-1.doc
Now look at this yourself. This file name looks like you are trying to write a password that cannot be easily detected.
3. CV..doc
A recruiter said send me your CV and you feel, here, take it, this is my CV. Well done!!! You have passed the challenge.
4. Isaac Hunter updated cv.doc
A round of applause for informing us your cv is updated
5. Isaac Hunter cv august 2016
So your life has not improved since august 2016. How can you send a cv edited in 2016 to a recruiter in 2017. Wake up, it’s New Year already
6. Curriculum Vitae-docx
Hello, do you have a name?
7. Isaac_Hunter’s cv – 3.docx
Saving your CV must have been so hard you had to save it 3 times. Or could it be you don’t trust your laptop cause the first 2 saves may disappear?
8. ATT_1234567891011_JACOB C.V-Ilovepdf-compressed pdf
OMG!!! No word for you
9. MYCV.docx
Is anyone dragging the CV with you?
10. Isaachunter.doc
Is your name longer than twitters 140 character limit that you had to write your first and last name together without spacing?
The best and right format is to simply save it in your name, for example, Isaac Hunter_Resume
Over to you, which of the blunders does your resume fall under?

Jobs/Vacancies / This Is How You Write The Best Resume ( Includes 200 Verbs Words To Use) by careernaija: 12:39pm On Oct 26, 2016
What resume writing tips can get you ahead in 2017?

An effective resume is the foundation of every successful job campaign. Most people only get to write their CV when they are seeking employment but resume writing skills is important for both fresh and advanced graduates who are seeking career advancement.

A good resume’s purpose is to summarize the key element of your past experience that you would like employers to consider when you are seeking employment. Therefore a good resume must tell a better version of your career life story.

Common Mistakes People Make With Resume

A lot of people make mistakes when writing their resume. Here are some of the common mistakes

Having one version for all job application
Using the same old resume continually without updating
Typographical and spelling errors
Unexplained gaps
Adding unnecessary information

Four Common Resume Format

There are several formats for resumes but the 4 common formats are:

Chronological resume.
Functional resume.
Combination resume
Targeted resume

The Component of a good resume

A professional resume should always contain the following:

Bio-data: This includes identification information such as your name, address and current phone number. You may add an additional phone number which must also be a working phone number

Objective: The objective section contains a single phrase expressing the specific type of employment you are seeking and or the principal skills you want to use on the job. Once you have a clear objective, you should use it as a thesis for the remainder of your resume; only information that supports your career objective should be included on the resume.

Education: This section should contain information about your education with the most current stated first. It should include details about your education, including location, degree, date of graduation, major or related course work and grade. If you have attained any higher educational qualification, you do not need to include information about your secondary school.

Employment history: This segment comprises the summary of previous employment to date. Start with your current position and work backward. Make sure you include all employment relevant to your career objective in any way. Internships can be listed either employment or under. Provide the name of the employer, the employer’s location, your job title, dates of employment, and simple verb phrases to summarize your main activities on the job (see “action verb” list). Whenever possible quantify and qualify data with specific details and statistics that illustrate your potential.

Activities/Honors/ Skills/ Publication: Additional areas that may be included on the resume if space allows. List all major activities and awards as well as any skills that are relevant to your career objective. These can show leadership, organization, critical thinking, teamwork, self-management, initiative and influencing others.

References: There is no need to list your references on your CV. Rather; the transcripts can be listed as “available upon request”. (Make sure you have references, phone numbers, and business addresses ready on a separate sheet whenever you go to an interview.)

Important Tips to Remember When Writing your Resume

Personal information like height, weight, sex, and marital status should not be listed on the resume. Such factors are irrelevant and cannot legally be considered in employment decisions.

Remember to keep all information on the resume concise and clear. A one-page resume is best, although people with extensive experience or advanced degrees may have to use two pages.

Be scrupulously careful when you proofread: Some employers will refuse to consider candidates who submit resumes with spelling or typographical errors.

ACTION VERBS to Use on Your Resume’s JOB DESCRIPTIONS

Words are important when writing your CV, especially when describing your previous job responsibilities.

In order to make your CV stand out, you have to use verb phrases. Imagine you are telling someone about your job. You usually will begin a sentence with “I. . . . ” For example, “I supervise ten employees. On the resume, instead of starting with “I”, you simply omit it and use only the remaining verb phrases to describe the work you do e.g. “Supervise ten employees or organize mass mailings.”

If you are having difficulty finding the right verbs to describe your work, choose from the following list:

adapted addressed adjusted administered

advanced advised allocated analyzed

applied appraised approved arranged

assembled assigned assisted attained
