Tension reportedly erupted in Ward 12, Akungba, Akoko South West Local Government Area of Ondo State, during the APC House of Representatives Primary Election following an alleged violent attack by suspected thugs. According to reports from eyewitnesses, the incident occurred during the conduct of the primary election when a group of armed men allegedly stormed the venue, causing panic among party members and supporters present at the exercise. Among those reportedly attacked were Hon. Sunday Odunayo Solomon, Special Adviser to the Executive Chairman of Akoko South West Local Government on Humanitarian Affairs, Mr. Tanimawo Oluwatomipe, Mr. Olorunwa Talabi, and several others. Eyewitness accounts alleged that the attackers, said to have been led by Mr. Akindipe Bodunde alongside Mr. Adeniyi Bolaji, arrived at the venue armed with guns, cutlasses, axes, bottles, and canes. The suspects were further accused of firing gunshots sporadically into the air, creating confusion and forcing many attendees to flee for safety. Victims of the incident were allegedly assaulted with bottles and other dangerous objects, resulting in varying degrees of injuries. Sources disclosed that those injured were later rushed to an undisclosed general hospital where they are currently receiving treatment. The incident has also generated political controversy, as some witnesses allegedly linked the attack to political figures including Hon. Adeyemi Adegboyega Adefarati, a serving member of the House of Representatives, and Hon. Abiodun Ogunbi, a former member of the Ondo State House of Assembly. However, no official confirmation has been made regarding their involvement, and the allegations remain subject to investigation by relevant authorities. As of the time of filing this report, security agencies had yet to issue an official statement concerning the incident. Party members and residents have called on law enforcement authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice. The incident has further raised concerns over the growing tension and violence often associated with political primary elections in the state.

UNDERSTANDING THE INFLUENCE OF NIGERIAN GOVERNORS IN THE DEMOCRATIC SYSTEM By Oseni Ridwan. O The structure of Nigeria’s federal system, as defined by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999), places enormous political, financial, and administrative powers in the hands of state governors. In practice, these powers often make governors the most influential political actors within their states, sometimes even overshadowing federal institutions at the subnational level. Their control spans executive authority, political structures, and, to a significant extent, grassroots governance. At the core of this dominance is the constitutional vesting of executive powers in governors. They are the chief executives of their states, responsible for implementing laws, appointing commissioners, influencing the judiciary, and shaping policy direction. They also possess veto powers over legislation passed by State Houses of Assembly, thereby controlling the legislative agenda within their states. This combination of executive and legislative influence creates a powerful political office with minimal internal resistance. One of the most controversial dimensions of gubernatorial power in Nigeria relates to local government administration. Although local governments are constitutionally recognized as the third tier of government, governors have historically exercised overwhelming control over them. This includes dissolving elected councils, appointing caretaker committees, and controlling finances through the State–Local Government Joint Account system, which has long been criticized for undermining grassroots democracy. This situation led to the landmark July 11, 2024 judgment of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, which granted full financial autonomy to the 774 local governments. The court ruled that funds from the Federation Account must be paid directly to local governments and declared it unconstitutional for governors to withhold or control these allocations. This judgment was widely seen as a turning point in Nigeria’s democratic evolution, aimed at strengthening governance at the grassroots level. However, despite this clear judicial pronouncement, implementation has been slow and, in many cases, deliberately obstructed. Reports indicate that most states have not fully complied, with funds still being routed through state-controlled mechanisms like the Joint Allocation Accounts Committee (JAAC). In some instances, local governments have not even opened the required accounts to receive direct allocations, raising serious concerns about political will and systemic resistance. This resistance highlights the entrenched power of governors, who see local governments as extensions of their political machinery. By controlling local government funds and leadership structures, governors maintain political dominance at the grassroots, influencing elections, patronage networks, and political loyalty. The persistence of caretaker committees in some states, despite judicial prohibitions, underscores this reality. The federal government, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has acknowledged this challenge. The President has openly warned governors to comply with the Supreme Court ruling, even hinting at possible executive action to enforce compliance. This tension between federal authority and state autonomy further illustrates the delicate balance of power within Nigeria’s federal system, and how governors continue to assert their influence. Beyond local government issues, governors wield significant control over party structures, especially within dominant parties like the All Progressives Congress (APC). In many cases, governors determine who emerges as party candidates for elections within their states. This power has recently come into focus with directive from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR) for governors to conduct party primaries in line with the Electoral Act, despite pressures from National Assembly members seeking automatic tickets. The demand by some federal lawmakers for automatic tickets reflects a struggle against gubernatorial dominance. However, in reality, governors often dictate the outcome of primaries through control of party delegates, state party executives, and political resources. This makes them central figures in determining political careers, even at the federal level. Another dimension of gubernatorial power lies in fiscal control. Governors oversee massive state budgets and influence the distribution of resources, contracts, and appointments. This financial power translates into political leverage, allowing them to build loyal networks across different sectors, including traditional institutions, civil society, and the private sector. In addition, governors play a strategic role in national politics. Through platforms like the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, they collectively influence federal policies, constitutional amendments, and national decision-making. Their support is often crucial for any president seeking to implement major reforms or secure re-election, further elevating their importance in the political hierarchy. Nigerian governors are arguably the most powerful actors within the country’s democratic framework. From controlling state machinery and local governments to shaping party politics and influencing national decisions, their reach is extensive. The ongoing struggle over local government autonomy, despite the Supreme Court’s clear ruling, is perhaps the strongest evidence of this power. Until structural reforms are fully implemented and enforced, governors will likely continue to dominate Nigeria’s political landscape.

CUSTODIANS OF OUR HERITAGE: THE POLITICAL CONSEQUENCES OF DISRESPECTING YORUBA MONARCHS Traditional rulers occupy a sacred and irreplaceable position in Yoruba society. Long before the evolution of modern political structures, the Obas, Baálẹ̀s, and chiefs were custodians of law, spirituality, and social order. Their influence transcends politics, it is deeply rooted in ancestry, cosmology, and generational respect. Therefore, for any politician emerging from the Yoruba race, fighting against traditional rulers is not only morally wrong but culturally unacceptable. It violates long-standing norms that have shaped Yoruba identity for centuries. Yoruba political philosophy places great value on hierarchy and respect for elders. According to Wande Abimbola in Yoruba Culture: A Philosophical Account, the Yoruba worldview is anchored in ìwàpẹ̀lẹ́ (gentle character), humility, and obedience to constituted authority. Traditional rulers symbolize these moral benchmarks. When a politician stands against an Oba, he is seen not as challenging an individual but as confronting an entire moral and ancestral institution. This is why Yoruba proverbs such as “Oba kii je ki ilu baje” (a king prevents the town from destroying itself) underscore the stabilizing role of the monarchy. Furthermore, Yoruba traditional rulers are not mere ceremonial figures, they are guardians of community cohesion. According to Prof. J.A. Atanda in The Yoruba People: Their History and Culture, the Oba serves as the embodiment of collective identity, acting as the voice of ancestral authority. A politician who fights such an institution directly threatens the unity of his community. Such behavior is condemned because it creates unnecessary tension and weakens the societal bond that the traditional rulers strive to uphold. From a sociopolitical standpoint, politicians derive significant legitimacy from the traditional institutions within their domain. Olufemi Vaughan, in his work African Chiefs in Contemporary Politics, reveals that traditional rulers remain influential in modern democracy because they serve as intermediaries between the government and the grassroots. When a politician antagonizes an Oba, he risks losing the cultural legitimacy that traditional rulers confer. This loss often manifests in diminished trust, reduced political goodwill, and community resistance. Moreover, Yoruba history offers ample warnings about undermining traditional authority. Samuel Johnson’s The History of the Yoruba documents numerous episodes where disregard for royal institutions led to social disorder, internal division, and even the decline of powerful kingdoms such as Old Oyo. These historical accounts demonstrate that when leaders, traditional or political, disrespect foundational institutions, the consequences ripple across generations. Fighting against traditional rulers also violates Yoruba moral principles. Yoruba people value omolúàbí, the concept of a well-behaved and cultured individual. One of its core pillars is respect for elders and constituted authority. A politician who engages in public conflict with an Oba automatically diminishes his own standing, as such conduct is interpreted as arrogance (ìgbéraga). As stated by Sophie Oluwole in Socrates and Orunmila, moral excellence is measured not only by achievements but by the character displayed in public life. Traditional rulers also play essential roles in conflict resolution, land matters, youth affairs, and cultural preservation. Studies published in the Journal of African Studies affirm that Yoruba kingship institutions remain the most effective platforms for resolving disputes and promoting peace. A politician who fights these institutions disrupts communal harmony and deprives himself of strategic partners in governance and development. Additionally, Yoruba spirituality places traditional rulers at a sacred intersection between the physical and ancestral realms. They are believed to carry divine authority inherited from ancestors, particularly Oduduwa, the progenitor of the Yoruba people. Toyin Falola, in Culture and Customs of the Yoruba, explains that opposing an Oba is often interpreted as resisting ancestral guidance. Such actions attract communal disapproval because they symbolize a break from the lineage that defines Yoruba cultural continuity. Beyond cultural and spiritual considerations, antagonizing traditional rulers damages a politician’s public reputation. Yoruba people value respectful conduct in leadership. A politician who confronts monarchs invites ridicule, distrust, and eventual political isolation. Yoruba communities are known to withdraw both moral and electoral support from any leader who displays contempt toward the royal stool. In conclusion, it is neither culturally wise, politically beneficial, nor morally acceptable for a Yoruba politician to fight against traditional rulers from his district or domain. Traditional rulers are not just figureheads, they are the moral compass, historical backbone, and spiritual anchors of Yoruba society. Respecting them is not optional; it is a cultural imperative. A politician who aligns with traditional institutions strengthens his leadership, protects community harmony, and honors the heritage that defines the Yoruba race. #CultureAndTradition #OurHeritage |

BELOW IS THE OFFICIAL STATEMENT RELEASED BY THE ALALE OF AKUNGBA PALACE ON THE 16TH OF SEPTEMBER, 2025 TIME: 06:25PM SAFETY FIRST: ALALE CLARIFIES POSITION ON OKERIGBO HILL BARRICADE The attention of the Alale Royal Palace, Akungba-Akoko, has been drawn to the growing controversy surrounding the barricade at Okerigbo Hill. This barricade was mounted by the Ondo State Government as a preventive measure to curb recurring accidents caused by articulated trucks descending the steep Okerigbo slope, accidents that had claimed numerous innocent lives in our community. Recently, disturbing reports have emerged alleging that certain individuals are collecting bribes from trailer drivers to unlawfully bypass the barricade. We wish to state categorically that: 1. The barricade remains a state government safety project and not a local community initiative for personal gain. 2. His Royal Majesty, the Alale and paramount of Akungbaland, has not, at any time, ordered the barricade opened for profit. Such allegations are false, malicious, and should be disregarded by the general public. 3. The Alale has directed all residents and road users to keep away from the barricade opening and has further ordered that trailers must not bypass the barricade until the dualisation project of the Akungba–Ikare road is duly completed. This directive is in the best interest of the safety and welfare of our people. It is important to note that construction companies engaged in the ongoing dualisation project, as well as relevant government officials, may be granted passage strictly for project-related and official purposes. Former Ondo State House of Assembly member, Hon. Abiodun Ogunbi, has stirred controversy within the All Progressives Congress (APC) after tactically suggesting that Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has little say in determining the party’s standard bearers for the National Assembly seats ahead of the forthcoming primaries. This was contained in a video clip circulated online, where Ogunbi was Speaking at a meeting of APC members from Wards 12 and 13 in Akungba Akoko on Saturday, October 18, 2025, he asserted that President Bola Tinubu and Minister of Interior, Hon. Bunmi Tunji-Ojo, have already decided to secure a return ticket for Hon. Adegboyega Adefarati, the current lawmaker representing Akoko South West and Akoko South East Federal Constituency without considering governor Aiyedatiwa's influence The meeting, held at Community Primary School, Akungba Akoko, was reportedly convened to mobilize support for Adefarati’s re-election bid. Sources revealed that the gathering was also aimed at countering the recent defection of Hon. Tope Agbulu, the member representing Constituency 2 in the Ondo State House of Assembly, who recently crossed from the PDP to the APC. Party insiders disclosed that Ogunbi and his allies fear Agbulu’s defection could alter the political balance within the area, potentially threatening Adefarati’s return ticket. They argue that having both lawmakers Adefarati and Agbulu emerge from the same town, Akungba Akoko, can alter political calculation which is invariably likely to affect the interest of the Adefarati's group. Ogunbi, however, appeared unconcerned about Governor Aiyedatiwa’s position on the matter. In his address, he repeatedly emphasized that the decisive influence lies with President Tinubu and Minister Tunji-Ojo, subtly downplaying the governor’s role in the process. The development has reportedly heightened political tension among APC members and supporters in Akoko land, with the party now divided between camps loyal to Adefarati and Agbulu. Even on Akungba Akoko WhatsApp platform serious Altercations are building up among the supporters of the two camps.
