Nairaland / General / Comprehensive Insurance For Vehicles (everything You Need To Know) by carpaddy: 3:37pm On Sep 10, 2021
A lot of Nigerians find it difficult or unnecessary to pay for insurance but can we blame them? In this article, we talk about the comprehensive insurance, what it means and its importance.

Basic personal auto insurance is mandated by all states in Nigeria and provides you with some financial protection in case of an accident. But is it enough? What are the options? Learn how car insurance works and what types of coverage are available.

What is a Comprehensive Insurance?
Comprehensive insurance is a coverage that helps pay to replace or repair your vehicle if it's stolen or damaged in an incident that's not a collision. Comprehensive typically covers damage from fire, vandalism or falling objects (like a tree or hail). If you're financing or leasing your car, your lender likely requires comprehensive coverage. If you own your vehicle outright, it's an optional coverage on your car insurance policy.

What Is Covered By Comprehensive Insurance?
Comprehensive insurance helps cover damage to your car that's not the result of a collision, such as:

Theft
Vandalism
Fire
Natural disasters (like a hurricane or a tornado)
Falling objects
Damage done to your car by animals
A civil disturbance (like a riot that results in damage or destruction of your car)

What's Not Covered?
Damage to your car from a collision
Damage to another person's vehicle from a collision
Your (or your passengers') medical expenses after an accident

Nairaland / General / Third-party Insurance For Cars (what It Covers) by carpaddy: 3:05pm On Sep 10, 2021
What is Motor Third-Party Insurance?

According to the Motor Vehicle Third Party Insurance Act of 1945. The act made it mandatory for all vehicle owners and users to obtain the Third-Party Insurance before putting their vehicles to use on the road or highways to protect the public or third parties that may sustain death, injuries or damage to their assets and properties following an accident caused by the insured vehicle.
It therefore has become a punishable offense for any person contravening the provisions of the law. Before this act was enacted, innocent third parties or members of the public were unduly exposed to uninsured risks of this nature, and were therefore left to suffer as there was no form of compensation or relief accessible to them.

How Does Motor Third-Party work?

In strict compliance with the enabling Act, all motor vehicle owners are compulsorily mandated to buy the Third-Party Insurance cover before they could drive or put their vehicles to use on the roads or highways. If any vehicle owner or operator fails to comply, it becomes a breach of the provisions of the law leaving the culprit to penalties under the law. This explains why the law enforcement agents oftentimes conduct spot-checks of vehicle insurance papers on the highways.

What are the Covers provided?

In line with the objectives underlying the enactment of the Motor Third Party Insurance, the covers which are solely meant to protect the interest of the general public – innocent Third Parties are broadly in two categories namely:

1.To pay compensation in an unlimited quantum or amount for any third party sustaining death or bodily injury resulting from an accident involving the insured vehicle.

2.To pay compensation for damage to asset or properties of third parties resulting from an accident involving the insured vehicle up to a limit under the standard policy provision, that can always be extended to higher limits at an extra charge.

3.To pay for legal cost and expenses incurred with the consent of the insurance firms providing the cover in defending any legal action or liability claim consequent upon an accident involving the insured vehicle.

Nairaland / General / How To Drive In Lagos Without ‘wahala’ by carpaddy: 10:51am On Jun 24, 2021
Driving on the streets of Lagos can be an extreme sport especially if you’re not a Lagosian and new to the Lagos life. If you live in Lagos, it’s about a hundred percent certain that you can very well relate to this. There’s even a popular saying that before the cock crows, Lagosians are already at CMS (a popular bus stop in Lagos) causing traffic “ear and dear”. Now back to it, driving in Lagos is not for the swift but for the skillful. Asides the amount of maneuvering and shouting you have to do just to get your daily bread, some even add to this wahala by not having complete car papers.

CAUSES OF ANXIETY ON THE ROAD
1. Park! Show me your particulars!
This statement has caused more anxiety attacks than you know. Any car owner/driver in Nigeria is obligated to know the requirements of owning and driving a car in the state. If a driver is stopped and found guilty of not having his/her complete car papers or having expired papers, he/she can be legally prosecuted or oftentimes fined a 20,000 naira levy for disobeying road/traffic rules. That being said, driving without your complete car papers could give you mental unrest and anxiety at the sight of road officials. This, you should try to avoid at all cost. See the list of important car documents every driver must have
Tip to help you overcome anxiety in this situation: Keep calm and visit [carpaddy.com]carpaddy.com[/carpaddy.com] for online renewal of your papers or Call/whatsapp +2348166944267

2. When the Traffic “wear Jeans and ties Wrapper”
Being a Lagosian is hectic for this one reason. You leave your house early to avoid traffic just to find that the entire Lagos did the same and now you’re all in that traffic you were trying to avoid. Trying to beat a deadline to your destination and not being able to control your time and movement due to unforeseen circumstances like traffic can cause a great deal of anxiety.
Tips to help you overcome anxiety in a traffic jam:
• Remember it’s not the end of the world, you’d only end up late not dead
• Keep your physical actions in check, frantically checking the time and traffic updates will only make you more anxious
• Recognize your reactions, Lagos drivers can test your patience but you have to be calming down

3. Do you know who I am?
Another statement that has caused a lot of fights and fear flying around on the streets of Lagos is “Do you know who I am?” We usually hear this mostly when two cars collide on the road due to one drivers’ negligence or one using a car that’s not roadworthy. I mean imagine running late for work and being held up by something like this. Avoid road accidents by making sure your vehicle is road-worthy and acquiring a roadworthiness certificate also get at least a third-party insurance that can cover you if you mistakenly hit someone else’s vehicle.

While we’re not able to regulate traffic, we can help ease your mental stress by offering an easier and faster way to get/renew your vehicle papers. Car Talk / All About Tinted Glass Permits – Application And Approval In Lagos by carpaddy: 3:43pm On Jun 03, 2021
Although having tinted glass in your car makes it look cool, mysterious, and keeps the sun out. It’s no news that cars with tinted glasses are now used to perpetrate crimes in society mostly because people on the outside cannot see who or what’s happening in the vehicle hence the need for regulation of usage. The responsibility of regulation of the tinted glass cars rests upon the Nigerian Police Force. Everybody with tinted glass in the country is legally required to acquire a tinted glass permit issued by the Nigerian Police Force. Failure to obtain this document may attract fines or other kinds of penalties.

WHAT IS A TINTED GLASS PERMIT?
A tinted glass permit is a document usually issued to vehicle owners with tinted glass that empowers them with the right to drive their cars around legally.

CONDITIONS FOR GRANTING A TINTED PERMIT
1. SECURITY GROUNDS
This is perhaps the most common reason for the application and granting of tinted permits by the authorities. The application is to prove his/her individual case to the issuing authorities. Each application is either approved or denied on its merits. Many public figures are granted permits because they need the extra security as well as privacy due to their already highly publicized life.
2. MEDICAL GROUNDS
A certified medical condition can also be a sufficient reason to be granted a permit. People that suffer certain skin conditions that are made worse when exposed to direct sunlight. Acquiring a permit via this condition will require a medical certificate from a qualified, certified medical practitioner. An acceptable medical report must be one from a medical practitioner from a governmental hospital stating your name and condition while recommending the tint permit for you.

You can apply for your tinted glass permit through the Nigerian Police Force or do it by following the steps at carpaddy.com

HOW TO CONFIRM THE GENUINENESS OF YOUR TINT PERMIT
Getting a tint permit is one thing and getting the original one is another thing entirely, there are several ways you can confirm the authenticity of your tinted glass permit:

1. BARCODE: Original tint permit comes with a barcode printed on it which carries your information like name of the owner, vehicle registration, chassis number, make of vehicle... If you get a permit without this information correlating with your registered information then it's fake!
2. VERIFICATION PORTAL: There's always a link on the barcode below your information that will redirect you to your verification portal, copy the link and paste it into your browser to verify your application status. This way you're sure it's an original permit but if the link doesn't work then it's fake.
3. SIGNATURE: Sometimes it's always confusing to know if you're holding an original document in Nigeria because fake ones always look better and appealing than the original, check the signature on your permit if it's fainted or bold. Fainted signatures show they are scanned and edited which is likely to be a fake one but the bold and vibrant means it is authentic.
4. APPLICATION ID: During the pre-registration, you will be issued an application ID to log in to your portal with your email, if you still have the application ID and mail you can use that to verify your permit but since the printout is done at the force headquarter also, this might be challenging.

Nairaland / General / What Do Plate Numbers Mean – When You Do New Car Registration In Lagos? by carpaddy: 5:58pm On May 18, 2021
Plate numbers are official sets of numbers and letters attached to the front or the back of a road vehicle. It serves as a means of identification for cars. Humans have ID cards, cars have plate numbers. The currently used Nigerian vehicle registration plates were introduced in the year 1992 and later revised in 2011.

When [www.carpaddy.com]registering a new vehicle[/www.carpaddy.com] in Lagos, the documents that come with it include a vehicle license, roadworthiness certificate, driver’s license, and a number plate. The unique number combination of all non-customized plate numbers is in the format ABC123DE of which the first three letters indicate the Local Government Area in which the vehicle was registered, followed by three digits and two letters. The last two letters are mainly for numbering. For instance, the numbering series will go from 001AA to 999AA then to 001AB to 999AB and so on. More often than not, the former letter, however, is used to distinguish types of vehicles. For instance, A means private vehicle, X means taxi and commercial transports as well, Q refers to bikes and tricycles and H refers to Hilux vans.

Nigerian [www.carpaddy.com]license plates[/www.carpaddy.com] generally look alike. In the upper left corner, they carry the Flag of Nigeria or the National coat of arms with a white background and number and letters imprinted with either of the colors green, blue, red, and purple. Each color represents a category of vehicles. For instance, plate numbers for commercial vehicles are imprinted in red, government plates are imprinted in green, then diplomatic plates come with a purple and green background and are imprinted on with white letterings. For the diplomatic plates, the first two or three digits indicate the country the car owner represents, then two letters and numbers follow. On exclusive plates like this, instead of the name of the state, you’ll find CORPS DIPLOMATIQUE written at the top of the plate.

As stated earlier, the first three letters of the plates represent the local government the car was registered in. see examples of some that can be found in Lagos:

LND = Lagos Mainland LG
LSR = Surulere LG
LSD = Oshodi Isolo LG
KSF = Kosofe LG

Car Talk / REVEALED: Secrets To Never Get Nabbed For Expired Car Papers In Lagos & Abuja by carpaddy: 10:54pm On Mar 01, 2021
The fines you pay, if you are caught by law enforcement in Lagos can easily add up to about N50,000 if you are not careful. As a matter of fact, if you think the figure is high, did you know you could also be imprisoned or get your vehicle impounded?

If you think this is over-blown then check below.

Here are few of the Lagos Traffic Offenses And Penalties:
Driving without a Driver’s license: Vehicle maybe impounded by the officials.

Driving with forged vehicle particulars: Lagos state traffic laws stipulates 6 months in prison as a penalty for such

Driving without road worthiness: The traffic law in Lagos state empowers LASTMA to impound vehicles that drive without road worthiness on Lagos state roads

Really, if you think you can avoid the Policemen on your route, remember the law enforcement officers that can serve you fines or penalties include Road Safety Officials, Vehicle Inspection Officers, LASTMA, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Police.

Why you can still be fined even if you’re checking…
Some car owners think they cannot be caught because of the reminder text message the car registry will send to them, they are wrong. These text messages don’t get delivered to all phone numbers, besides it is not sent for all the vehicle papers you need to renew per time. What if you used another phone number at the point of registering the car or it may be another person’s data on the document all together.

What’s the solution then?
So you ask is there any solution? The answer is Yes. In fact the solution is 100% FREE for that matter!!

You can get reminders by Email, SMS and WhatsApp, all FREE of charge for each of your vehicle papers several days before expiry. This way, you are never caught unawares.
