Take a Break to Check Your Brakes

There are two basic ways to check for brake wear on disc brakes and the first one we always suggest is look and learn. How can I look at my brakes without taking the wheels off? Well, it’s easy. Look at your brake pads through the spaces between the wheel’s spokes to check for wear. The outside pad will be pressed against a metal rotor. Generally, there should be at least 1/4 inch of pad. If you see less than 1/4 inch of pad, you may want to have your brake pads inspected or replaced asap.

Test driving a used car

*Take that car over 60 mph during your test drive. A lot of the problems a car might have are not easily detected at slower speeds. Does the front end shake or vibrate when you’re going fast.
*An important thing to notice is a vibrating steering wheel. At any speed, a vibrating steering wheel can be indicative of problems.
*When you come fully to a stop and then accelerate, are there any strange or unusual noises you notice.
