These are times when most of us do our shoppings online are so used to it that we take it for granted. A lot of people pay before delivery BUT its a good thing that most will insist on payment on delivery. There is a trend now going on and Ive experienced this twice now and thankfully it didn't result in what I would consider a complete loss, in fact the second one was resolved immediately with the threat of involving the law enforcement. A description of how it works, at least from my own experience and evaluation; An online seller (jiji to be precise) puts up pictures of what they "have" with attractive or even normal prices, when an intending buyer contacts them, they request sending you pictures of the item(s) on WhatsApp. After the buyer has made their choice and concluded on a deal, they ask you for your full address and number for the delivery, now when the delivery man gets to the agreed location is when the scam unfolds ; In my experience, this happens in one of two ways; 1. The actual owner and seller of the item has no idea who the intending buyer is, and believes the jiji "owner" is the buyer and have a separate pricing agreement and instruction to the delivery man - in which case, the actual owner of item expects money paid into their own account before instructing the delivery person to release the item. When you now pay to the jiji "owner" given account, the rider tells you the sender hasn't gotten any alert, then eventually you insist on talking to the sender (the real owner of the item) to find out that - You have paid to someone who doesn't own the item and who has suddenly cut off communications with the real owner - The price or the agreed amount you paid is not even what the scammer and the actual owner agreed upon in the first place. 2. The second Ive seen is that, the jiji "seller" gives you an account to pay into (and even if you agree on Payment On Delivery), they agree and the dispatch rider gets to your location. When the rider gets to you with the item, you confirm that the same person who has been talking to you is the one who has been talking and directing the delivery person BUT the item was picked up from an Online "Store". Now, the simple way forward would have been to pay to the rider and #WalkAway with your item BUT the jiji "owner" WILL INSIST you pay into their given account. When you now pay into that account, they call the dispatch rider and tell the rider that you didn't send the money and that they did not see any alert BUT just an sms from you. This is the reality of today's online shopping and my experience has been that: - Both scammers used the same bank; UBA Bank - Both scammers refused to show up ANYWHERE - UBA will not respond to emails regarding the incident EXCEPT your bank initiates a Recall procedure based on your supplied facts - Jiji is very slow to close such accounts (understandably so, because they would just come up with another user/store name) So in summary, this is very real and to avoid being a victim, PAY TO THE DELIVERY MAN AND COLLECT YOUR ITEM! Anything else will lead to a bitter end. Our over reliance on automation and online activities is creating a big problem for us and enabling scammers everywhere! I hope this helps someone. #BeCareful #StayWoke #StayAlert |
