Nairaland GeneralCitizen Calls For Resignation Of Ikwuano LG Boss, Nwaubani, Petition Gov Otti by CDAnewsonline(op): 12:52am On Apr 18, 2025
The Executive Chairman of Ikwuano LGA of Abia State, Dr Anthony Nwaubani has been asked to resign forthwith from office for brutally assaulting a woman, Mrs .Oluchi Ugochukwu even as relevant bodies including Abia State Governor Alex Otti, and the National Human Rights Commission, NHRC have been asked to investigate the matter and sanction him.

In a statement expressing disappointment and condemnation over the barbaric and inexcusable action, Dr Iheanyichukwu Emmanuel Uke stated that Dr Nwaubani should be sanctioned for directing thugs to physically assault a defenseless woman (another man’s wife) simply because she cultivated crops close to a road.

It is with deep outrage and disappointment that I condemn the barbaric and inexcusable actions ordered by Dr. Anthony Nwaubani, the current chairman of Ikwuano LGA of Abia State”, he declared

Uke, who described himself as a ‘Concerned citizen maintained that Dr. Nwaubani directed thugs to physically assault a defenseless woman (another man’s wife) simply because she cultivated crops close to a road. “This act is not only a gross abuse of power but also a despicable violation of human rights and decency. No person, regardless of their office or status, has the right to unleash violence on any citizen for exercising their means of livelihood”, he affirmed

He further alleged that the LG made deliberate efforts to cover up his atrocity by forcibly seizing phones from onlookers and deleting videos showing the brutal assault. “This deliberate suppression of evidence is an affront to justice and a clear indication of guilt. It also raises serious concerns about the level of impunity with which Dr. Nwaubani operates in Ikwuano LGA. Such lawless conduct can not and must not be tolerated in any democratic society”, he stressed

Uke urged the Executive Governor of Abia State, Dr Alex Otti to immediately order a thorough and independent investigation into the brutal assault and suppression of evidence.

He also appealed to the NHRC, the International Federation of Female Lawyers, FIDA, other human rights advocacy groups, and national security agencies to take swift action in ensuring justice for the assaulted woman and all those whose rights were trampled.

This matter should not be swept under the rug, and no political protection must be allowed to shield perpetrators of violence, abuse of power and violation of human rights of citizens, especially women.

Dr. Anthony Nwaubani has demonstrated through this vile act that he is unfit to continue holding public office. I, as aconcerned and bona fide son of Ikwuano, call for his immediate resignation as chairman of Ikwuano LGA.

The people of Ikwuano, in part and Abia State at large, deserve leaders who uphold the law, respect human dignity, and act with integrity. Anything short of decisive action will set a dangerous precedent, encouraging more acts of impunity and silencing the voices of the oppressed community in the LG”, he submitted

Nairaland GeneralWhy I Want To Unseat Otti In 2027 – Atuma. by CDAnewsonline(op): 4:31pm On Feb 22, 2025
A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Abia State, Hon Emeka Atuma, has vowed to unseat the incumbent Gov. Alex Otti of the Labour Party in 2027, explaining that his major objective is to provide “good governance to Abians”.

Atuma who spoke during a strategic political meeting of APC stakeholders in Abia Central at his Ntalakwu, Oboro Ikwuano country home, criticised the leadership style of the Governor.

He claimed that under the current LP-led administration, “the governed are blindfolded on the affairs of the state”, and promised to change the narrative.

Describing Otti’s government as “an accidental government”, Atuma promised to bring accelerated development in the state if voted for.

He promised that the APC , if given the opportunity, would “run on transparency, good governance and human capital development when it takes over leadership in Abia State.”

Atuma debunked insinuations in some quarters that the APC is anti-Igbo, and urged Abians to join the ruling party at the centre.

He insisted that the APC does not hate Ndigbo but promotes the interest of the people.

In his opening remarks Deputy leader of the forum Hon. Uzoma Ihuka, charged the members to be united if they must dislodge the ruling LP in the state.

Speaking at the forum, former Chairman of APC in the state and the incumbent National Welfare Secretary of APC, Hon. Donatus Nwankpa, who welcomed some decampees to the party, said the rate at which new members were joining the party was a sign that APC was gaining wider acceptance in the state.

Former Commissioner for Finance, Mr Obinna Oriaku, in his remark, claimed Otti’s administration had “performed below expectations”, urging the people to support APC in 2027.

In a communique after the meeting, the stakeholders passed a vote of confidence on the leadership of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, saying that he is genuinely committed to Nigeria’s economic restoration.

The forum also commended the efforts of the Abdullahi Ganduje-led National leadership of the APC to reposition the party nation wide.

The stakeholders assured new members of equal opportunities at all levels, promising equitable distribution of democracy gains.

"De Norsemen Kclub International, as a humanitarian organization, knows what sacrifice and service means. That is why we have joined other well-meaning Nigerians to celebrate our military men and remember those who have fallen," he said.

The International President advised Nigerians to respect and safeguard the lives of military personnel at all times.

"As people of genuine course, we must respect the members of the armed forces at all times. We condemn, in strongest terms, the unwarranted and unprovoked killing of our military men in different parts of the country. A soldier is a brother, a sister, a husband, a wife, a father, a mother, a friend, and above all a human being. They deserve to live like everyone of us. We must help in protecting their lives by providing credible intelligence on the hideout of criminals."

He commended the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, for adjusting the celebration to include the living.

"It is important to commend the Chief of Defense Staff for changing the celebration to, 'Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day'. The adjustment is apt. While we remember the fallen heroes, we celebrate the living ones.

"However, the welfare of the living heroes should be a topmost priority. They should be given modern equipment to fight insecurity. Their living conditions and other welfare packages should be improved. Lastly, the bad eggs who stand on the road to molest and extort money from innocent citizens should be apprehended and severely punished, " he concluded.

Armed Remembrance Day is celebrated on the 15th of January every year to honour members of the armed forces who have paid the supreme price.

However, this year, the military high command saw the need to also celebrate the living members of the Armed Forces and changed the name to: Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day.

Nairaland GeneralCBN Fines 9 Banks N1.35bn For Failing To Dispense Cash Via Atms by CDAnewsonline(op): 8:27am On Jan 15, 2025
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) yesterday said it has fined nine banks N1.35 billion for failing to make Naira notes available through automated teller machines (ATMs), during the yuletide season.

According to the apex bank, the fines were imposed on the banks to demonstrate zero tolerance for cash flow disruptions.

Each bank was fined ¦ 150 million for non-compliance,in line with the CBN’s cash distribution guidelines, following spot checks on their branches. The enforcement action follows repeated warnings from the CBN to financial institutions to guarantee seamless cash availability, particularly during periods of high demand.

The affected banks include Fidelity Bank Plc, First Bank Plc, Keystone Bank Plc, Union Bank Plc, Globus Bank Plc, Providus Bank Plc, Zenith Bank Plc, United Bank for Africa Plc, and Sterling Bank Plc.

Communication with the banks revealed that the fines would be debited directly from their accounts with the apex bank.

The Acting Director of Corporate Communications at the CBN, Mrs. Hakama Sidi Ali confirmed the development, noting that “Ensuring seamless cash flow is paramount to maintaining public trust and economic stability.

“The CBN will not hesitate to impose further sanctions on any institution found violating its cash circulation guidelines,” she added.

The CBN’s investigations and monitoring will continue to scrutinise cash hoarding and rationing, both at bank branches and by Point-of-Sale (POS) operators. The Central Bank is working with security agencies to crack down on illegal cash sales and operational violations, including enforcing POS operators’ daily cumulative withdrawal limit of N1.2 million.

Governor Olayemi Cardoso, in his address at the Annual Bankers’ Dinner of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) in November 2024, warned banks to strictly adhere to cash distribution policies or face severe penalties. He underscored the CBN’s commitment to maintaining a robust cash buffer to meet Nigerians’ needs. “Our focus remains on fostering trust, ensuring stability, and guaranteeing seamless cash circulation across the financial system,” Cardoso said.

The CBN urged all financial institutions to comply with its guidelines, warning that further violations would attract swift and decisive sanctions.

Meanwhile, the CBN has reiterated the validity of the old N1000, N500, and N200 denominations urging the public to disregard any claims that they have no longer legal tender from December 31, 2024.

In a statement signed by the Ag. Director, Corporate Communications, CBN, Mrs. Sidi Ali, Hakama, the apex bank said: “The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has observed the misinformation regarding the validity of the old ¦ 1000, ¦ 500, and ¦ 200 banknotes currently in circulation.

In line with the Bank’s previous clarifications and to offer further assurance, the CBN wishes to reiterate that the subsisting Supreme Court ruling granted on November 29, 2023, permits the concurrent circulation of all versions of the ¦ 1000, ¦ 500, and ¦ 200 denominations of the Naira indefinitely.

For the avoidance of doubt, all versions of the naira, including the old and new designs of N1000, N500, and N200 denominations, as well as the commemorative and previous designs of the N100 denomination, remain valid and continue to be legal tender without any deadline.

We, therefore, advise the public to disregard any claims that the old series of the aforementioned banknotes will cease to be legal tender on December 31, 2024.

“We urge Nigerians to continue accepting all Naira banknotes (both old and redesigned) for their daily transactions and to handle them with care to ensure their longevity.
