OXYGEN SENSORS AND ENGINE PERFORMANCE[center][/center]


Function/How it works
As the name implies, the oxygen sensor’s function is to monitor/sense the oxygen level in the exhaust gases. Hence, the sensor is mounted upstream at the exhaust line. The oxygen sensor information is used by the vehicle ECU to determine correct air fuel ratio thus assisting emission control. Since its function is related to vehicle management, a failing sensor will result in diverse engine performance problems.

Diagnosis/Symptoms

The following Symptoms will be manifested by your vehicle when the oxygen sensor fails;
1. Check Engine Light is “ON”
A bad oxygen sensor is reported as the primary reason that turns on the check engine light. Generally, the check engine light alerts you of a malfunction in a vehicle system. With a DIY scan tool, your car technician can troubleshoot the exact cause of the check engine light.
2. Increase fuel Consumption.
Since your vehicle ECU relies on the oxygen sensor information to control air fuel ratio, a primary cause of high fuel consumption is a failed oxygen sensor. Black smoke from the exhaust is evidence of a rich mixture-consequence of a failed oxygen sensor.
3. Loss of Engine Power/Miss-fire
Because the oxygen sensor dictates the leanness or richness of combustion gases, a broken oxygen sensor can lead to engine misfire and loss of power.
4. Rough idling/ Poor Engine Performance
Engine timing, combustion intervals, and air to fuel ratios are all controlled by the oxygen sensor. A bad sensor can disrupt the way the engine runs which can lead to a feeling of roughness when idling or operating the car in general.

Many vehicles today are equipped with a Maintenance Required, Service Required, or Oil Change light. This indicator is sometimes confused with a Check Engine Light, but they are very different.
