Does the Ballon d'Or winner receive a cash prize? The Ballon d'Or is an honor that gives prestige to the winners, but does not grant a direct payment for the award. However, it does have a value that can come as an indirect compensation. According to the portal Sport Bible, some players have a bonus in their contract from their teams or sponsors if they win the Ballon d'Or. How much does it cost to manufacture the Ballon d'Or? To make it, two brass plates are embossed in order to give them the shape of a hemisphere and create the main motif of the award: a soccer ball. Then, the goldsmith solders both pieces with a blowtorch, while the chiseler fills the ball with a wax-like material and shapes the seams of the ball with a chisel and a hammer. Once this stage is completed, the Golden Ball is emptied of wax and sent to the polisher, who also engraves the logo; it is bathed in gold and screwed to a pyrite base. This means that it costs around $13,800 (around $262,000 Mexican pesos), although it takes six months and approximately 100 hours of work to make it. The last touch is given the same night of the delivery, when a goldsmith engraves the winner's name before handing it over. Rodri, the first spanish player to win the Ballon d'Or in the 21st century and the second in history to be recognized with the prestigious trophy. "It's a very special day. I want to thank the most special person for me, who is my girlfriend. Without you, this journey would not have been the same. To my family, of course, and the values they have given me, which helped me not to make mistakes," were the opening words of the new Ballon d'Or winner. Rodri's current net worth is estimated to be around 15.6 million. The Spanish midfielder earns £180,000 ($230,000) a week. However, The Sun reported in April that Pep Guardiola's club wants to double the Spain midfielder's wages to £375,000 a week to extend his Etihad Stadium stay. At 28 years old, his market value is currently over 140 million, according to Transfermarkt, which is expected given his outstanding performances in recent years and the Ballon d'Or win. © Octubre 2024 Unidad Editorial Información Deportiva, S.L.U. The recent assault and threats against an e-hailing (Bolt) driver by Alex Ikwechegh, a first-term lawmaker, representing Aba North/Aba South Federal Constituency of Abia State, in the House of Representatives reflects a disturbing abuse of power and an affront to the dignity and rights of all Nigerians. In a viral video on X, Ikwechegh is seen not only striking Stephen Abuwatseya, an e-hailing driver three times but also issuing threats to make him “disappear,” brazenly wielding his position as a weapon. Drunken by power, Ikwechegh described himself as someone who is above the law and threatened the dignity of labour of the driver by refusing to pay him his delivery fees despite delivering the snails he ordered from a vendor. Abuwatseya had told the lawmaker to come out of his premises to collect his parcel and since he had not accorded him the overbearing ‘worship’ doled on politicians, this had irked the lawmaker. Such conduct underscores a worrying trend of impunity among the political class, suggesting a systemic disregard for the rights of citizens and the rule of law. Crucially, the people of the Aba North/Aba South constituency need to evaluate the performance of the lawmaker and consider recalling him for his misconduct. Also, the rights and liberties movement in the country must rise to the occasion to defend the rights of the poor driver, ensuring that the case is not scuttled or mismanaged by some corrupt members of the police force. While we applaud the police for swiftly condemning the lawmaker’s action and inviting him for interrogation, a thorough investigation must be done to achieve justice. The House of Representatives must also evolve an effective mechanism within their House rules to punish lawmakers who display rash, uncouth, and tyrannical acts within and outside the Green Chamber. Unfortunately, the emergence of the lawmaker in the Green Chambers underscores the flaw in our democracy. His action further emboldens the gross disconnection between the leaders and the governed. According to reports, the National Assembly Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Umuahia sacked the lawmaker representing the Constituency in the House of Representatives, Emeka Nnamani of the Labour Party, based on certificate forgery in September. The three-man tribunal declared Alex Ikwechegh of the All Progressives Grand Alliance as the winner of the election. In other words, Ikwechegh was brought into office through the intrusion of court rulings, thereby transferring the people’s electoral franchise, and establishing a disconnect between the people and the embattled lawmaker. This incident shows that Ikwechegh may have not found ways to reclaim legitimacy but may have remained cocooned in Abuja, receiving humongous salaries and allowances while wreaking havoc and riding roughshod on the sanity of common, hardworking Nigerians. The judiciary must be wary of swiftly using the gavel on electoral matters such as Ikwechegh’s case; a re-run of the elections would have made him or any other politician earn the mandate of the people and appreciate the importance of his or her office. While it is laudable that his party, the APGA, has condemned him in strong terms and has set up a disciplinary committee to engage the matter, those are, at best, political face-saving measures. Political parties are meant to present to the people men and women of the finest moral character; leaders who see themselves as servants of the people instead of slave drivers. Therefore, APGA and other political parties must recalibrate their candidate selection processes and investigate the personalities fielded as worthy options for countrymen to elect to exalted offices. The lawmaker must be severely punished to serve as a deterrent to other political officeholders. In 2019, Nigerian Senator Elisha Abbo similarly assaulted a woman in Abuja, an act that provoked outrage and led to a judicial fine of N50 million. Yet such fines are rare, and real accountability for abusive officials is virtually nonexistent. Ikwechegh’s case presents an opportunity to reverse this trend if only those in power are willing to act decisively. For the Nigerian government, and the House of Representatives in particular, this incident should not be taken lightly. The Honourable Speaker must initiate an immediate investigation, while Ikwechegh should be held to account both legally and politically. In nations where the rule of law prevails, even the perception of misconduct by officials is met with rapid consequences. Nigerian citizens deserve no less. In the United Kingdom, swift action was taken recently when Labour MP Mike Amesbury was suspended following an alleged physical altercation in October 2024. The video evidence reportedly showed Amesbury in a brawl, leading the Labour Party to suspend him immediately, pending investigation. This response reflects a commitment to holding public officials accountable for ethical lapses, emphasising a standard that is still lacking in Nigeria, where powerful officials often evade consequences for misconduct. This contrast underlines the need for Nigeria to adopt similar accountability practices to protect citizens and uphold democratic values. Every Nigerian, regardless of status, deserves respect and fair treatment. Public office is a privilege, not a license to humiliate or oppress. It is time for Nigeria to demand higher standards from its leaders, reinforcing that the misuse of power has no place in a truly democratic society. punchng.com © 1971- 2024 Punch Nigeria Limited |

It sounds somehow when Obidients say I am using Peter Obi to gain popularity. Really? I was voted the most influential businessperson on the Internet in Africa by an international audience of one of the world's top business magazines, Business Insider. I was voted, not awarded. I had votes from EVERY African country. My closest competitor in that poll was Vusi Thembekwayo, a multimillionaire South African businessman. Yet, with all of the xenophobia directed at Nigerians in that country, I still got significant votes from South Africa. My book was a number-one bestseller in two categories. Has Peter Obi even written a book, let alone a successful one? I am against Peter Obi because he is a tribalistic trader who only cares about his own people and has a hidden agenda to wage war against the Muslim Ummah. And when placed on the hot seat to be asked about his plans for Nigeria, his emptiness and lack of grasp on the issues becomes even more apparent. This is a man who loses his voice when tragedy occurs in his own geopolitical zone and finds it again when it happens outside Igboland. His initials, P. Obi, might as well be rearranged as IPOB. That is why he lied to Nigerians that there is a subsisting court judgment ordering the release of the IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu. Contrary to Peter Obi's IPOB-inspired lies, in a unanimous ruling on December 15, 2023, the Supreme Court ruled that Nnamdi Kanu had a case to answer for treason. After that, on May 20, 2024, the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja ruled that Nnamdi Kanu should be denied bail. I will not sit down and watch a man who built two loss-making breweries but did not build a single nursery, primary, secondary school or university during his eight-year tenure as Anambra Governor grandstand that he has all the answers to Nigeria's challenges. On Monday, federal universities across the country were shut down, in compliance with the indefinite strike called by the Joint Action Committee of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities. On Sunday night, SSANU and NASU vowed to indefinitely shut down all university activities across the country, starting Monday, until the Federal Government paid the four months withheld salaries. A statement made available to The PUNCH on Sunday and signed by the National President of SSANU, Mohammed Ibrahim, and the General Secretary of NASU, Peters Adeyemi, said the ultimatum it gave the Federal Government over its withheld salaries expired Sunday midnight. The unions are demanding, among others, the payment of the four-month withheld salaries, improved remuneration, earned allowances, and implementation of the 2009 agreements with the government. The Federal Government had, through the Ministry of Labour and Employment, invoked the ‘No Work, No Pay’ policy when the four university-based unions embarked on a prolonged strike in 2022. Last October, President Bola Tinubu directed payment of four of the eight months withheld salaries for the academic staff. It was finally paid in February. The directive was silent about the non-teaching staff, raising concerns as to their fate, a development the unions described as selective. The Federal Ministry of Education on Monday reached out to the leaders of the university workers’ union, following the declaration of an indefinite strike. Speaking on Monday with our correspondent in Abuja, Ibrahim noted that the ministry reached out to him requesting a meeting. “Well, I will say unofficial (meeting) because there is no official communication to that effect,” Ibrahim told The PUNCH. “The Minister of State for Education reached out via a phone call and noted that the call was on the instance of the incoming minister, requesting for a meeting today in Abuja but because I was unavailable, the meeting couldn’t be held. “As you know most of us are not based in Abuja and all of that.” According to Ibrahim, the compliance observed in universities on Monday likely prompted the Federal Ministry of Education to request a meeting. On Monday, not much activity was recorded at the University of Lagos, as the school was on holiday. A monitoring exercise conducted by our correspondent revealed that although the University of Lagos was on holiday, SSANU and NASU members still adhered to the strike directive. Speaking to our correspondent, the branch chairman of SSANU at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Mr K.T. Fashola, stated that there was approximately 55 per cent compliance in the school, due to previously scheduled events planned for Monday. “Yes, our members complied at about 55 per cent because today (Monday) is the first day, and many activities had already been arranged that the school could not cancel. There is compliance.” Chairman, SSANU, Federal University Technology, Akure, Mr Felix Adunbi, explained that the body held its congress in alignment with the national directive, and they fully concurred with that position. “Our members have been instructed to return home until the Federal Government takes appropriate action. “NASU had directed its members to stay at home since last (Sunday) night, but SSANU convened its congress this (Monday) morning to communicate the national message. “Afterward, everyone returned to their respective homes, and all administrative duties have been suspended until further notice,” Adunbi said, urging the government to act honourably. He added, “The President approved the necessary funds last year, and ASUU was subsequently paid. “We have organised multiple protests regarding this issue. Despite this, we still don’t understand why the Ministry of Finance is withholding these funds. “We implore the government to fulfil its commitment. If the President has approved, why is there a delay? The Ministry of Finance, the agency responsible for these payments, must act swiftly to release our funds.” In a joint congress held at the sports complex, Ugbowo campus of the university, the leadership of the unions said a monitoring committee had been constituted to ensure compliance by those affected. Activities in the library, health centre and sports complex were closed to students. At the school gate, private security outfits contracted by the management were seen at work. Speaking at the meeting, the chairman of the UNIBEN branch of NASU, Anthony Igbinosa, said, “The President said they should give us 50 per cent of what they owe us, which is two months, so, we gladly left and happily told our people that we were expecting two months salary and let us start from somewhere. “However, from the 18th of July till date is over three months, we are told that it is the Minister of Finance that is sitting on the President’s directive. But if the President is serious, will an appointee be sitting on his directive?” His SSANU counterpart, Broderick Osewa, said, “To ensure compliance, we have decided that we should commence and there is a monitoring team that will go round and we will make sure that there is total compliance in our university.” Both bodies shut down the Federal University Lokoja, Kogi State, following the nationwide strike. Activities were paralysed at the university on Monday with the institution’s campus deserted. Addressing journalists at the Felele campus of FUL after a joint emergency Congress, SSANU chairman, Federal University Lokoja, Adedeji Suara, noted, “We don’t like the way the Federal Government is treating us. In 2022, we went on strike, and our salaries were withheld for four months. Since that particular time, up till now, the Federal Government has not paid our salaries, despite the fact that our sister union, ASUU, was paid 50 per cent of their own withheld salaries. “The President has magnanimously said that our four-month salaries should be paid, but the people we are dealing with in the system raised a memo for two months. “The two months we are talking about, up till now, we have yet to get anything. Our four-month salaries should be paid. When they pay us, we will go back to work.” Meanwhile, the SSANU and NASU branches of the University of Ilorin will hold a joint congress today to assess the strike. The Public Relations Officer of SSANU, UNILORIN chapter, Segun Alabi, disclosed this to The PUNCH in Ilorin, Kwara State on Monday. Alabi said, “We will hold a congress at the gate of the University of Ilorin at 8am tomorrow (Tuesday) where we will take a decision on the strike.” The President of the National Association of Nigerian Students, Lucky Emonefe, said the association was not in support of the strike, adding that shutting down schools would disrupt students’ academic progress. He maintained that students were in school to complete their studies. Emonefe said, “We urge senior and non-academic staff to consider the interests of Nigerian students when taking such actions. “Strikes can ultimately affect our academic timetable, leading to longer durations for students to complete their education.” He called on the government to promptly address the unions’ requests and work toward a resolution. “While we do not condone the government’s neglect of salary payments, we advocate for an amicable resolution. The government should engage in dialogue to address the grievances of senior staff and non-academic workers. Strikes should not be seen as a solution; rather, constructive discussions are necessary for finding resolutions. “It’s important to note that when unions like ASUU and NASU face issues, it ultimately impacts Nigerian students, not the government. The students bear the brunt of these disruptions, and any delays in resolving these matters directly affect us. Therefore, we appeal to both the government and labour unions to consider the consequences of their actions on students. “Nigerian students are affected. While the issues will eventually be resolved and payments made, it is the students who bear the consequences of these disruptions. We appeal to both the government and labour unions to consider the impact of their decisions on those who are truly affected.” punchng.com © 1971- 2024 Punch Nigeria Limited |

As fuel consumption plummets nationwide due to soaring prices, oil marketers have expressed concerns over significant losses, with around 10,000 oil dealers about to shut down. Data from the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority indicate that fuel consumption dropped to 4.5 million litres per day in August 2024, down from 60 million litres per day in May 2023—a staggering 92 per cent decline. The data also show that only 16 out of the 36 states received fuel from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited in August, leading to widespread shortage. Since President Bola Tinubu announced the removal of fuel subsidy in May 2023, petrol prices have surged by about 488 per cent, rising from N175 to over N1,000 by October 2024. The continuous price hikes have strained the economy, driving up transport costs and fuelling inflation, as struggling Nigerians lament the hardship. The situation has also forced many motorists to abandon their vehicles, opting instead for public transportation. The national leadership of the Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria said the drop in fuel consumption had caused the association huge losses, adding that about 10,000 of its members were on the verge of shutting down. Speaking with Sunday PUNCH, the PETROAN National Public Relations Officer, Dr Joseph Obele, said the cost of a truckload of PMS had moved from N7m to N47m in the last 16 months. “Three days ago, there was a meeting at the national headquarters of PETROAN. At the meeting, there was, an indication that about 10,000 of our members would quit business in the next 45 days because their trading capital had been severely affected,” Obele stated. He claimed that the affected marketers had a total staff strength of about one million. “That was why we wrote a letter to Mr President, dated October 21, requesting a grant of N100bn to save the affected marketers’ businesses from shutting down in the next few weeks.” The President of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, Abubakar Maigandi, also confirmed that there had been a reduction in fuel consumption, adding that members of the union were equally affected. He said, “There is a drop in consumption and the price of a truckload is higher now. So, we have reduced the quantity of fuel we buy. For instance, someone who bought 10 trucks before can only buy eight now. So, we haven’t been getting the right quantity that we are supposed to get. We sell only the little quantities we get.” The leadership of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers said the inability of oil marketers to buy products had resulted in job losses for truck drivers and petrol station workers in the country. In an interview with our correspondent, the NUPENG Secretary-General, Mr Afolabi Olawale, said, “The economy is not smiling at all. Many petrol station owners cannot even buy a single truckload, and this has affected our members. Those of them that are truck drivers hardly get loads to carry anymore. Many petrol stations have closed down and our members who are petrol station workers have lost their jobs.” When asked to give the actual number of NUPENG members affected, Olawale said, “This is an unfolding situation. It’s evolving, so I may not be able to give you the actual number of people affected now because we have those in the informal and formal sectors. We have people in the upstream, downstream, and midstream. But I don’t have the statistics right here with me to give you. “Though everybody is affected, those in the downstream are the most affected. It affects those in the downstream sector directly because they are truck drivers, station workers, and the representatives of the marketers at different depots.” Obele said the hike in fuel price had also blocked the cross-border racketeering of the product. punchng.com © 1971- 2024 Punch Nigeria Limited |
Chairman of the Enugu State Traditional Rulers’ Council, His Royal Majesty, Igwe Ikechukwu Asadu, has appealed to the Federal Government to release Nnamdi Kanu, stressing that his continued detention is contributing to insecurity in the Southeast. Igwe Asadu urged President Bola Tinubu to seek a political solution to Kanu’s case, expressing hope that his release would help stabilize the region. Speaking during the 2024 New Yam Festival at Edem Ani Ogwugwu Ancient Kingdom in Nsukka, Igwe Asadu explained the festival’s significance as a time for thanksgiving for bountiful harvests, peace, and security. The monarch, who previously served as Chairman of the South East Traditional Rulers’ Council, extended his gratitude to Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State for his support, including the provision of fertilizers for local farmers and establishing a smart school in the community. “Iwa Ji is a key traditional practice that sustains our culture and reminds us of the importance of agriculture, particularly yam farming, as a staple food and a symbol of prosperity,” he said, encouraging citizens to invest in farming. Enugu State’s Commissioner for Agriculture, Patrick Uburu, also expressed the government’s support for the New Yam Festival, emphasizing its role in promoting cultural heritage and boosting agricultural productivity. The state government, he noted, has identified and continued to support genuine farmers to ensure food security. Chairman of the occasion, Chief Chidi Ezema, highlighted the festival as a celebration of life, culture, and community achievements, marking the second year of the revived festival under Igwe Asadu’s leadership. Planning Committee Chairman, Ozo Chukwuemeka Ejum, praised Igwe Asadu’s dedication to preserving Edem Ani Ogwugwu’s culture and traditions. The event featured elaborate cultural displays, including masquerades, traditional yam barns, and other performances, celebrating the vibrant Igbo heritage. © 2024 Vanguard Media Limited, Nigeria |
THE Joint Action Committee, JAC, of non teaching staff unions in the universities, comprising the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions, NASU and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, has directed its members to proceed on a nationwide indefinite strike from Monday over the non payment of the four months withheld salaries. The strike according to the leaders of the two unions would commence on Sunday night of October 27, 2024. JAC in a circular to all branch chairmen of NASU and SSANU in the universities and inter-university centres, with the title: “Latest development in respect of the withheld four (4) months salaries,” explained that the strike initially billed for 23rd October, was rescheduled because of the Trade Group Council meeting of NASU branches on the said date. The circular which was signed by Prince Peters Adeyemi, General Secretary of NASU and Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim, SSANU President, explained that the strategic change in timing was for effective co-ordination and for both Unions to be on same page. JAC regretted that despite President Bola Tinubu’s approval for the 50 percent of the four months withheld salaries to be paid, the alleged inaction of the Minister of Finance raised question about the government’s commitment to resolving the issue. According to the circular, “It is on record that JAC of NASU and SSANU has issued multiple notices to the government to redress this ugly situation. However, the sincerity of government to our cause is in doubt. “However, the Trade Group Council Meeting of NASU branches in the Universities and Inter- University Centres has been scheduled to hold on Wednesday 23rd and Thursday 24th October 2024 at Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, and the arrangements for the meeting already concluded. “We express our deepest appreciation for your steadfast commitment to the leadership and we affirm our determination to persist in this struggle until ultimate victory is secured.” © 2024 Vanguard Media Limited, Nigeria |

In a 40-day study, people who took a papaya-based formula showed improvement in constipation and bloating. Papaya seeds, leaves, and roots can treat ulcers in humans and animals, and the fruit is beneficial for digestive health. Papaya Can Prevent Skin Damage Papaya keeps the body healthy, which can prevent skin damage, such as aging. It promotes more youthful and toned skin. A study claims that people who eat papaya for 10-12 weeks show less skin redness after sun exposure. Another study showed that older women who consumed papaya saw a reduction in depth of facial wrinkles. Papaya's Vitamin C and antioxidants can help the skin recover and defend against wrinkles, skin damage, and sagging. Papaya Can Improve Eye Health and Vision Papaya has an organic compound that prevents inflammation in aging eye diseases, such as macular degeneration. Lycopene protects the retinal pigment epithelium, which is essential for healthy vision against oxidative stress and inflammation. Zeaxanthin is an antioxidant present in papaya that cuts out harmful blue light rays, which are crucial in preventing macular degeneration. Is There Any Risk or Side Effect of Eating Papaya? Papaya is a safe and delicious fruit. However, excessive consumption of papaya can damage the esophagus, as papaya contains papain (an enzyme). The risk is higher when you are eating an unripe papaya. An unripe papaya appears green from the outside. People with a latex allergy should avoid papaya. They might also need to be careful around fruits and food products containing papaya. Key Takeaways Papaya is a sweet, delicious, and healthy fruit. You can eat it raw, in a salad, as a fruit chaat, in a smoothie, or in any other tasty dish. Papaya contains vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, anticancer effects, and anti-inflammatory properties. These can improve digestion heart health, and prevent aging, contributing to overall health improvement. However, people with papaya allergies should avoid its consumption. contact@redcliffelabs.com Redcliffe labs © 2024. All rights reserved. |
Why Some Regions Have More Military Checkpoints Than Others Recently, certain individuals have been using the issue of military and police checkpoints to gaslight the public and cast the Nigerian government as partial to some regions over others. But is this an accurate reflection of today's Nigeria? The Federal Government will treat each region and state according to their conduct. You are not being marginalised because there are very few checkpoints and militarisation of Lagos and the Southwest while your region is heavily militarised. It is because the government and people of Lagos conduct themselves in a civilised manner that is conducive to peace, progress and prosperity. And when there is a threat to law and order in Lagos and the Southwest, their political and community leaders act speedily to restore normalcy. For example, when Oodua nation agitators attempted to violently storm the Oyo State Government secretariat on Friday, April 12, 2024, the Governor of Oyo did not wait for any Federal Government intervention or call on the Nigerian Army to provide internal security. He used state forces to arrest the perpetrators within hours. The next day, Governor Seyi Makinde destroyed their houses. On the third day, they were in court. Today, they are in prison. It should also be noted that apart from what the government did, the family members of those Oodua agitators took out paid adverts in newspapers to disassociate themselves from their relatives who acted in such an unruly manner. Similarly, when the Eze Ndigbo of Ajao Estate, Lagos, Frederick Nwajago, threatened to invite the Indigenous People of Biafra to Lagos to protect Igbos, he was IMMEDIATELY arrested and charged to court. Today, he is in prison. But where your region is in turmoil, and there are killings and destruction of lives and property, constant murders of men and women of the military and security services, along with acts of criminality and terrorism, which go unpunished and are not condemned by states and local governments, as well as prominent citizens of your region, you cannot expect the Federal Government to fold its hands and allow these elements to run roughshod. In such a situation, there will rightly be police and military checkpoints every other mile along roads and within towns. Because the first duty of any government is to ensure that there is law and order which allows citizens to go about their lawful activities. And if you see that as marginalisation, then you will continue to be marginalised until you learn to comport yourselves in a peaceful and orderly manner. Even the elite of these regions, including those complaining of marginalisation, prefer to live and work in Lagos and the Southwest rather than their own regions. Why? It is because in the Southwest, they can work every day of the week without being harassed and murdered. And that is precisely why there is less military presence in Lagos, Ekiti, Ogun, Ondo, Osun and Oyo. It is just as Scripture says: "When a country is rebellious, it has many rulers, but a ruler with discernment and knowledge maintains order."-Proverbs 28:2. Finally, let me add that terrorism and secessionist tendencies can only thrive where there is ACTIVE local support and connivance. Reno Omokri Gospeller. Deep Thinker. #TableShaker. Borris Ndorbo A graduate of Rivers State University, Borris Ndorbo lived in Port Harcourt with his wife. He had been employed in the floating production, storage, and offloading sector since August 28, 2023. His social media activity was minimal, with his last post being a selfie taken in a helicopter along with a nostalgic photo captioned, “Good friends. Just something important to remember.” NUPENG, PENGASSAN mourn members In a statement on Friday, NUPENG said the men were frontline members of the union. They were a branch chairman of NUPENG, Ndorbo, and a member, Alu. In a statement signed by its President, Williams Akporeha, and the General Secretary, Afolabi Olawale, NUPENG expressed sadness over the incident. “The leadership and entire membership of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers express profound sadness and deep sorrow over the tragic helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight individuals, including six passengers and two crew members. “We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited, the management and staff of Arion Energy Services Ltd, and the NUIM Antan Branch of NUPENG. The union commended the efforts of the Rivers and Akwa Ibom State governments, as well as the Federal Ministry of Aviation and other agencies involved in the recovery operations. Similarly, the President of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, Festival Osifo, mourned members of the union who were involved in the crash. Osifo said the crash claimed the lives of four of its members. He said, “The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria is deeply saddened and shocked by the tragic helicopter crash that claimed the lives of four of its esteemed members. “The deceased members were valued members of the PENGASSAN family and dedicated professionals in the Oil and Gas industry. Their contributions to the Sector and to our Association will be sorely missed.” He noted that the association was working to gather more information about the circumstances surrounding the crash. “We urge all parties involved to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation to determine the cause of the accident and urgent measures put in place to prevent future tragedies,” Osifo said. NAMA engages Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea Saturday PUNCH gathered that the Nigeria Air Management Agency had enlisted neighbouring countries such as Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea in the search for the missing crashed helicopter and four other passengers. As of the time of the crash on Thursday, eight persons were onboard but three lifeless bodies were retrieved from the Atlantic Ocean where the chopper ditched. Two others were later recovered on Friday, putting the number of recovered bodies at five. Search operations have continued, but efforts to get either the aircraft or other victims from the ocean have not been fruitful. The military, National Emergency Management Agency and emergency locators jointly started the search operations for the passengers of the helicopter immediately after the unfortunate incident occurred. The aircraft was conveying workers of the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited. The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, confirmed the unfortunate incident to our correspondent through a statement signed by the Head of Press and Public Relations of the ministry, Odutayo Oluseyi. Meanwhile, a reliable source, who has been in practice for over 10 years, hinted to the Saturday PUNCH that as of 9pm on Thursday, stakeholders were already planning on how to break the unfortunate news to the families of the deceased persons. When contacted for an update on the matter, the Managing Director of NAMA, Umar Farouq, told Saturday PUNCH that efforts were being made to find both the missing helicopter and passengers. “Through concerted efforts, we are on top of the matter, with other agencies the search operation is on and Insha Allah we shall be successful,” he stated. When asked if the agency had sought the help of neighbouring countries such as Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea, the NAMA boss responded in the affirmative, saying all the Flight Information Regions have been called upon for help. In aviation, a flight information region is a specified region of airspace in which a flight information service and an alerting service are provided. FIRs are the largest regular division of airspace in use in the world as of now, and have existed at least since 1947. Farouq added, “Yes, in situations like this we collaborate with all adjacent FIRs for assistance. It is our responsibility to reach out to all Search and rescue stakeholders, which we have done in this regard. Cameroon, Equatorial-guinea among others are stakeholders in this regard and we have contacted them all.” In a post on his X account, Keyamo noted that the remaining passengers had yet to be found. “This is just to update the public that the divers deployed to the scene of the helicopter crash yesterday at the Atlantic Ocean, near Bonny-Finima, off the coast of Calabar, during a routine flight are still at work to find the remaining bodies and the wreckage. “The ministry will be making a more comprehensive Press Statement as soon as we achieve some breakthrough,” he stated. punchng.com © 1971- 2024 Punch Nigeria Limited |
If The North Secedes From Nigeria, Eastern Region Will Blockade Arewa-Speech By Nnamdi Azikiwe on Monday, May 12, 1953 I have invited you to attend this caucus because I would like you to make clear our stand on the issue of secession. As a party, we would have preferred Nigeria to remain intact, but lest there be doubt as to our willingness to concede to any shade of political opinion the right to determine its policy, I am obliged to issue a solemn warning to those who are goading the North towards secession. If you agree with my views, then I hope that in course of our deliberations tonight, you will endorse them, to enable me to publicize them in the Press. In my opinion, the Northerners are perfectly entitled to consider whether or not they should secede from the indissoluble union which nature has formed between it and the South, but it would be calamitous to the corporate existence of the North should the clamour for secession prevail. I, therefore, counsel Northern leaders to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of secession before embarking upon this dangerous course. As one who was born in the North, I have a deep spiritual attachment to that part of the country, but it would be a capital political blunder if the North should break away from the South. The latter is in a better position to make rapid constitutional advance, so that if the North should become truncated from the South, it would benefit both Southerners and Northerners who are domiciled in the South more than their kith and kin who are domiciled in the North. There are seven reasons for my holding to this view. Secession by the North may lead to internal political convulsion there when it is realized that militant nationalists and their organizations, like the NLPU, the Askianist Movement, and the Middle Zone League, have aspirations for self-government in 1956 identical with those of their Southern compatriots. It may lead to justifiable demands for the right of self-determination by non-Muslims, who form the majority of the population in the so-called ‘Pagan’ provinces, like Benue, Ilorin, Kabba, Niger and Plateau, not to mention the claims of non-Muslims who are domiciled in Adamawa and Bauchi Provinces. It may lead to economic nationalism in the Eastern Region, which can pursue a policy of blockade of the North, by refusing it access to the sea, over and under the River Niger, except upon payment of tolls. It may lead to economic warfare between the North on the one hand, and the Eastern or Western regions on the other, should they decide to fix protective tariffs which will make the use of the ports of the Last and West uneconomic for the North. The North may be rich in mineral resources and certain cash crops, but that is no guarantee that it would be capable of growing sufficient food crops to enable it to feed its teeming millions, unlike the East and the West. Secession may create hardship for Easterners and Westerners who are domiciled in the North, since the price of food crops to be imported into the North from the South is bound to be very high and to cause an increase in the cost of living. Lastly, it will endanger the relations with their neighbours of millions of Northerners who are domiciled in the East and West and Easterners and Westerners who reside in the North. You may ask me whether there would be a prospect of civil war, if the North decided to secede? My answer would be that it is a hypothetical question which only time can answer. In any case, the plausible cause of a civil war might be a dispute as to the right of passage on the River Niger, or the right of flight over the territory of the Eastern or Western Region; but such disputes can be settled diplomatically, instead of by force. Nevertheless, if civil war should become inevitable at this stage of our progress as a nation, then security considerations must be borne in mind by those who are charged with the responsibility of government of the North and the South. Military forces and installations are fairly distributed in all the three regions; if that is not the case, any of the regions can obtain military aid from certain interested Powers. It means that we cannot preclude the possibility of alliance with certain countries. You may ask me to agree that if the British left Nigeria to its fate, the Northerners would continue their uninterrupted march to the sea, as was prophesied six years ago? My reply is that such an empty threat is devoid of historical substance and that so far as I know, the Eastern Region has never been subjugated by any indigenous African invader. At the price of being accused of overconfidence, I will risk a prophecy and say that, other things being equal, the Easterners will defend themselves gallantly, if and when they are invaded. Let me take this opportunity to warn those who are making a mountain out of the molehill of the constitutional crisis to be more restrained and constructive. The dissemination of lies abroad; the publishing of flamboyant headlines about secessionist plans, and the goading of empty-headed careerists with gaseous ideas about their own importance in tile scheme of things in the North is being overdone in certain quarters. I feel that these quarters must be held responsible for any breach between the North and South, which nature had indissolubly united in a political, social and economic marriage of convenience. In my personal opinion, there is no sense in the North breaking away or the East or the West breaking away; it would be better if all the regions would address themselves to the task of crystallizing common nationality, irrespective of the extraneous influences at work. What history has joined together let no man put asunder. But history is a strange mistress which can cause strange things to happen!
