The Yoruba Youth Socio-cultural Association (YYSA), has vowed to defend the Southwest region and its heritage against all external forces that may threaten the peace, unity and development in the region. YYSA gave the assurance following the planned protest against hardship in the country by some groups scheduled to hold in August. National President of YYSA, Olalekan Hammed and the National Secretary, Olawale Ajao in a statement on Friday in Ibadan, said it had uncovered secret plans by some unscrupulous elements to take advantage of the intending nationwide protest against hardship to perpetrate evils. According to the youths, there is a plan by the people to set major economic development facilities ablaze in the Southwest. “We have uncovered some secret plans by unscrupulous elements to take advantage of the intending nationwide protest against hardship to perpetrate evils by setting ablaze all our major economic development facilities in Southwest. “Besides that, they have as well mapped out some strategic areas to ensure that they navigate easily to palaces menacingly and burn them to ashes”, the youths alleged. They added that local government secretariats were also part of the public properties targeted for destruction by the people. “Moreover, it is our prerogative to defend Southwest region and heritage against all external forces that may be threat to peace, unity and development. “For this reason, we hereby unequivocally declare that the scheduled mass protest has been put on hold in order to secure and protect Yoruba land from enemies of progress disguising as students and activists to put us into peril socially and economically”, they said. Meanwhile, the Yoruba group commended the President Bola Tinubu-led administration for ensuring that justice prevailed for all tiers of government to operate as enshrined in the Nigerian constitution. “They are as well known as the three levels of government through which legislative lists were shared as follows; exclusively legislative list, concurrent legislative list and residual list. “Although, the state governments that constitutionally share some powers in the residual legislative list with local governments have dominated everything, while the constitutionally recognised third tier of government has become castrated”, the youths added. While noting that genuine development starts from the grassroot at the local government level where people are engaging mostly in primary activities such as farming, fishing, craft, hunting, petty trading and others, the YYSA said, “Essentially, agriculture products and food items are being transported to cities after successful harvest in rural areas under local administrations.’ It further explained that the issue of security can best be tackled at local level where suspicious persons can easily be identified © 2024 Leadership Media Group - All Rights Reserved. |

What's causing the crisis? The worst economic crisis in Nigeria in decades has cost the country the ranking as Africa's biggest economy. And inflation and a volatile exchange rate are driving the cost of living up in the nation of more than 200 million people. Higher drug import prices have led to local price hikes and a scarcity of basic medicines. Pharmacist Emmanuel Olaogun Oladeji says Nigerian drug manufacturers simply can't plug the gap. "There is a limit to what local manufacturers can do. We are grateful to have the likes of Emzor Pharmaceuticals and some other indigenous manufacturers in the country, but there is a limit to what they can do," Oladeji told DW. Why oil-rich Nigeria can still not fuel its economy Analysts predict that Nigeria could plunge to fourth position on the list of African economies in 2024. Businesses are struggling to stay afloat. "What caused our problem in Nigeria today is the devaluation of our national currency against the US dollar," Alhaji Sani Nasidi, a veteran businessman, told DW. The high cost of essential commodities citizens are facing is a direct result, he said. As a way out of the current crisis, Nasidi suggested that "Nigeria needs to run away from a dollar economy." Economic reforms cause hardship President Bola Tinubu has embarked on a bold set of economic reforms that he argues are necessary and will bear fruit in the future. His decision to remove fuel subsidies was seen as abrupt. It led to the doubling of fuel prices, rising food and transport costs and an increase in the price of imported products. According to financial analyst and former banker Aminu Philip Yado, the high fuel costs are impacting Nigerians broadly. "Transportation is one of the major factors that affects the cost of produce in the market," Yado said. "When you go to the farm and you have to harvest and transport at a very high cost, there is no way you can come to the market and charge low. You would certainly have to charge profitably and sustainably." "The same inflation is what caused companies to run away from Nigeria because they would not be making a profit," said Alhaji Sani Nasidi, the businessman. "The quality of goods and services they normally produce would be reduced, and people would not have money to buy it." Aminu Philip Yado, the financial analyst, believes that the economy needs innovation. "What is basically wrong with the economy is that the managers of the economy themselves are not really having the economy at heart. Everybody that gets there struggles for his own and not the Nigerian people," Yado told DW. Yado sees a lack of investment in major infrastructure that could grow the economy and create jobs for youth as a key factor in the deepening economic crisis. "When they talk of borrowing, in fact how much [...] of this borrowing that they want to invest in the Nigerian infrastructure actually goes into investment in that infrastructure in Nigeria?" he asks. How is Nigeria dealing with fake bank notes? Energy crisis with devastating impact Nigeria also faces an energy crisis. Tinubu is trying to rejuvenate the national power grid by pouring in public money instead of subsidizing electricity for those who cannot afford to pay. After he scrapped fuel subsidies, Tinubu did away with a series of electricity subsidies. "If there is power in Nigeria today, all artisans that depend on power to do their business will go back to doing their business at a cheaper cost than they are doing now," said Yado. Most business owners are forced to buy generators to keep operations going. This trend, the financial analyst told DW, is not sustainable. In the meantime, citizens like Toyin Ogundeko and her son are desperate. "People have all sorts of complicated conditions, and imagine how they're coping?" she said. "So, for me it's a plea to the government: Whatever needs to be done, first find a way to stabilize this economy. Things are getting out of hand." © 2024 Deutsche Welle |
One thing we learnt from the #UKElection2024 is this: If you want to win an election, focus on telling the public what you want to do first and how you would govern the country better. Do not concentrate on attacking the government in power or your other opponents. You could do that, but it should not be your single issue. You have to offer a better alternative to the public. That is why I am amused when people think Peter Obi is coming in 2027. If he contests again, he will only lose, and worse, he will divide the opposition's vote and make President Tinubu's re-election easier. Let me ask you a question. Where does Peter Obi stand on the issues? He is against the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway. What are his alternatives to that policy? He attacks the Government over the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu but does not say how he will end the insurgency in the Southeast. And worse, he even obeys IPOB's Monday sit-at-home. He attacked President Tinubu for ending fuel subsidy, yet he said he would not borrow. Therefore, how would he retain subsidy without borrowing or remove it without increasing inflation? Other than that, what does Peter Obi really stand for? He talks about ending consumption and increasing production, but he is Nigeria's single largest individual importer through his trading business-next supermarket. You see, when you are not blinded by tribalism, it is clear to see that Peter Obi is no Keir Stammer. He is just the head of the political wing of IPOB, who will set Nnamdi Kanu free and treat the secessionist tendencies of IPOB with his gloves, just as Buhari did with Boko Haram. Again, we know what Keir Stammer stands for. It was very clear during the campaigns. But other than his plan for "religious war" against the Muslim Ummah, and his intention to free Nnamdi Kanu, what does Peter Obi stand for? #TableShaker |

The biggest national security threat facing Nigeria today is not Boko Haram or bandits. Boko Haram is fighting to have an Islamic Caliphate, and their leadership has been decimated, while their ideas are being rejected and recruitment has dropped. Bandits are criminals, and their operations are purely for commercial gain. But the Obidient movement is different. They are fighting against democracy by refusing to accept the will of the Nigerian people as freely expressed during the #NigerianElections2023, and insisting that Peter Obi won an election in which he came third. They attack the integrity of the Independent National Electoral Commission, falsely claiming that the INEC was mandated by law to declare results electronically, thereby undermining the trust that the public has in that vital institution. Their fight against democracy is being escalated to the point that where anyone with an opposing view to theirs and who refuses to support their candidate and their movement has a brand, they use every means, fair or foul, to engage in reputation-savaging and to cancel that person and their brand as well as threaten their family members. They set up crowdfunding to report the social media profiles of their opponents and write bogus petitions against them to national and international organisations while coordinating on WhatsApp to use robotic devices to mass report their social profiles. Working with Arise TV and several influencers, they spread fake news and propaganda against opponents of their movement and the Nigerian state. They have a confirmation bias against Nigeria, especially the North and Southwest. As a result, they question positive news about Nigeria, even where it comes with evidence and promote bad news about Nigeria, even where it has no basis. Not stopping there, they constantly de-market Nigeria by misrepresenting the true state of government policy, such as the Samoa Agreement, which an Obidient, Sonnie Ekwowusi, lied about, falsely alleging that it is to promote the LGBTQ agenda. And in the wake of the Kenyan protest, their leader, Peter Obi, in a post on social media, asked why Nigerians do not learn from Kenya, an obvious attempt to trigger Kenyan-style protests. Their movement is actively seeking to instigate ethnic strife in Nigeria when their leader, Peter Obi, falsely asserts that people of Igbo origin are being targeted for demolition in Lagos as punishment for not voting for the APC when not one person has shown that their structure was illegally demolished. This is even as Peter Obi lied that a court had given a verdict ordering the release of the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu. However, contrary to Peter Obi's IPOB-inspired lies, in a unanimous ruling on December 15, 2023, the Supreme Court ruled that Nnamdi Kanu had a case to answer for treason. After that, on May 20, 2024, the Federal High Court in Abuja ruled that Nnamdi Kanu should be denied bail. Finally, there is a sustained effort by Peter Obi and his movement to undermine President Tinubu personally, by making false claims about him, including that President Tinubu paid for 1411 people to go for #COP28 with government money. In fact, only 422 of the delegates of Nigeria were publicly funded. And not all of those publicly funded were financed by the Presidency. Unlike Boko Haram and bandits, Obidients are attacking the institutions that uphold our democracy, including free speech, the judiciary, and the Independent National Electoral Commission, and the corporate existence of Nigeria and her political stability are at risk if nothing is done, within the ambit of the law, to curb the excesses of this movement.
