Politics / Why Money Spent On Buhari's Health Matter by ceomike(m): 11:50am On Apr 22, 2017
Interesting article on The Guardian Nigeria

In response to inquiries on the cost of the medical treatment of President Muhammadu Buhari abroad, the other day, Lai Mohammed, the Minister of Information deemed it a matter of ‘national security’ and a moral [issue].

It may be appropriate to accept the minister’s response for the reason that abjectly immature opponents of Buhari, his government, and even his political party , the All Progressives Congress (APC), might just exploit such information to score cheap points. Indeed, it is bad manner to trivialise or to exploit for self-interest or political gains, matters of the health of any man at all, not to talk of the President of the country. In principle, health is the greatest measure of wealth so, no monetary sum can be too much to secure the well-being of any man. It is not appropriate, therefore, to ask, except out of genuine concern and clearly pure motive, the why and how of the expenditure on the health of the president. As noted by this newspaper in an earlier editorial, the African culture forbids mockery of old age or making a fuss about such matters as concern elders.

Nevertheless, it would be equally unfair to presume that question by a citizen and a member of the electorate about the medical expenses by the president is necessarily ill-motivated. For example, the constitutional obligation of the mass media to ask questions about conduct of government is stipulated in Section 22 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) that ‘the press, radio, television and other agencies of the mass media shall at all times be free to uphold the fundamental objectives contained in [Chapter II] and uphold the responsibility and accountability of the Government to the people.’ And, of course, there is a fundamental reason that the media must do this not for its (sectional|) self, but for ‘the people’ as a collective entity. This reason is to be found in Section 14 (2) (a) that says ‘sovereignty belongs to the people of Nigeria from whom government, through [the constitution] derives all its powers and authority.’

Religion / Buhari Is Victimizing Those That Don't Belong To His Religious Group - CAN Youth by ceomike(m): 7:35am On Apr 22, 2017
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Youth Wing has said that president Muhammadu Buhari has turned his government into a religious organization, victimizing those that did not belong to his group.

The national president of the association, Mr. Daniel David Kadzai, who spoke to journalists yesterday at Yola international airport on his way to Abuja, noted that the recent suspension of the secretary to the government of the federation (SGF) Mr. Babachir David Lawal and the Director General of NIA Mr. Ayo Oke, is a confirmation that religion has become immunity under this administration.

He argued that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) acting chairman Ibrahim Magu, is indicted by Department of Security Service (DSS), but he is still in office due to his religion.

Kadzai pointed out that the present government declared war on Christians when the present minister of education removed Christian Religious Knowledge (CRK) as a subject in the academic curriculum of the country. He further disclosed that the SGF ran into troubled waters when he queried the JAMB registrar for contracting Jaiz bank, which has very few branches in the country to register students for the examination.
He pointed out that the controversial suspension of Lawal and Oke and allowing indicted Magu to remain in office is a clear plot to plant Muslims in those vacant seats

Business / Exchange Rates: Naira Improves To N460 To The Dollar by ceomike(m): 3:19pm On Feb 24, 2017
The Naira traded at N460 in the parallel markets against the US Dollars, rising significantly after it was traded at N520 earlier in the week.

Many believe the recent reductions in parallel rates is as a result of the release of forex by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to alleviate the pains in school fees, medical fees and and personal traveling allowance payments.

The CBN pegged exchange rates for payment of the school fees, and personal travel allowance (PTA) and medicals at N375 to the dollar.

Phones / FG Advises Nigerians To Brace For Telecom Data Price Increase by ceomike(m): 8:23am On Dec 09, 2016
Adebayo Shittu, communications Minister has asked Nigerians to brace for a price rise while making a case for telecom service providers, which according to the minister were operating under unfriendly business environment including lack of electricity and increasing security challenges.

But the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) said it intervened with an interim price floor for data services to avert a looming price war in the telecommunications sector.

The regulatory commission said it feared that the price war could eventually lead to a monopoly in the telecom industry that would force small operators to shut down.

It said that monopoly in the telecom sector could also push the country back to the days of NITEL – the troubled government-owned telco – to the detriment of small operators.
Prof. Umar Dambatta, NCC executive vice chairman stated this when he appeared before the Senate Committee on Communications.’

The committee was mandated to investigate the proposed data tariff hike said to have been ordered by the NCC.

But the minister, said the reality was that telecom service providers are operating in an unfriendly business environment, including lack of electricity and increasing security challenges.

He said: “This is one area that I believe that we all must face the reality… If you look at the NCC law, it is positioned to reflect experiences, expertise and all of that and I want to believe that there must not be too many interventions in the activities of the NCC.

“I am a political office holder. I am not an expert, so I cannot venture to say whether they did wrong or right, except they say that the constitution has granted them the role of a supervisor of a direct regulatory authorities, particularly relating to the activities in the telecoms industry.

“The only area I feel they were deficient was in the area of communicating with the people of this country, particularly because of the sensitivity that has been imposed on Nigerians by the harsh economic situation.

“I know that if you want to make omelet you must break eggs. Unfortunately in this country, we fail to appreciate the transformation role that ICT has brought about in the lives of Nigerians.

“So, I am not supporting at this stage or not supporting the price increase with regards to the floor. But what I am saying is, these are technical issues whose decision must be taken having regard to all the factors that are important before a decision can be taken.

Politics / Buhari Warns Elites To Stop Making Expensive Demands by ceomike(m): 9:33am On Dec 07, 2016
President Muhammadu Buhari has called on the Nigerian elite to stop insisting that things should be done the ‘old way’, which impoverished the nation.

Speaking at a meeting with a group of Nigerians in the Diaspora, on the margins of the 3rd Dakar International Forum on Peace and Security in Africa on Tuesday in Dakar, the President said his administration is on the right track to improve the image of the country by entrenching accountability and probity in governance.

Muhammadu Buhari told the 11-man Nigerian delegation of association leaders resident in Senegal and Cote D’ Ivoire, that the last 16 years of poor handling of the nation’s resources and infrastructure have continued to impact negatively on the country.

“This administration is pleased we won the election, we are pleased Nigerians are cooperating with us. But the problems are so enormous that we need the cooperation of Nigerians, particularly the elite.

“They (elite) should reflect on the condition of the country, and stop making expensive demands because things cannot be done the old way,” the President said.

On the welfare of Nigerians in the Diaspora, Buhari assured them that the Federal Government will continue to promote good neighbourliness and improve the negative perception about Nigerians abroad.

“Nigerians are known for their competitiveness and I am very passionate about Nigeria. I will continue to preach good neighbourliness and work hard to improve the numerous human and material resources in the country,” he said.

In his remarks, the President of the Nigerian community, Cote D’ Ivoire, Alhaji Adebayo Yahaya, commended the President for his bold and unflinching fight against corruption, saying “Nigerians are praying for your success, don’t relent, do not lose hope, the almighty God is behind you.”

Also speaking, the President of the Nigerian community, Senegal, Mr Osas Edigin, told the President that Nigerians in the country have enjoyed excellent relationship with their hosts.
