Kanu’s US attorney, Bruce Fein, writes Tinubu, renews call for release of IPOB leader

US-based counsel to incarcerated leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, Bruce Fein, has written an open letter to President Bola Tinubu, reinstating his call for the immediate release of Kanu from detention.

In the open letter which was addressed to the President on Sunday, Fein said Tinubu needs to intervene in the detention of Kanu and ensure the immediate compliance with the order of the United Nations Human Rights Council Working Group on the Arbitrary Detention for Kanu’s unconditional release.

Fein called on Tinubu not to follow the footsteps of his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari who was opposed to the call for Kanu’s release, and hoped that the new government would be more agreeable to a peaceful settlement.

The American lawyer also accused Buhari and his administration of exemplifying “lawlessness, including the illegal attempted assassination, kidnapping and torture of Nnamdi Kanu” before his recapture by the Nigerian State.

“On multiple occasions, the Nigerian government denied me the right to meet with my client or to be present in the courtroom to observe Nnamdi Kanu’s proceedings and to consult but not to act as a licensed Nigerian practitioner,” parts of the letter reads.

“You confront a choice between becoming a firefight or being the fire. The former would crown you with a possible Nobel Prize. The latter could consign you to Dante’s Seve Circles of Hell as portrayed in his Divine Comedy.

"You would become a firefighter by immediately ending the criminal, illegal detention of Nnamdi Kanu as ordered by the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention and Nigeria’s Court of Appeal over a year ago,” he wrote.

“Nnamdi Kanu is every bit or more the leader of Biafrans as Nelson Mandela was for South Africa’s blacks.

“He is fighting for a referendum to save his people from extinction at the hands of herdsmen terrorists and the Nigerian Armed Forces.

"Kanu and his group have the right to peacefully agitate for self-determination under international conventions.

“I am urging you to chart a new course towards a peaceful resolution of the contention between Kanu and the Nigerian State.

“History waits on you to do the right thing and earn your place of pride on its sacred pages,” Fein stated.

IPOB disowns Biafra Liberation Army, says they are violent criminals run by Simon Ekpa

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has distanced itself from a new pro Biafra group known as Biafra Liberation Army (BLA), describing members of the group as violent criminals.

IPOB spokesman, Emma Powerful said this in a statement he released to newsmen on Sunday, claiming that the group was being led by Simon Ekpa.

Powerful was reacting to a viral video by a member of the group adorned in an army camouflage and IPOB insignia, insisting that IPOB members have not degenerated to violence in their quest for a Biafra nation.

Powerful said: “The global family and movement of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) ably led by Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi KANU wish to state unequivocally that Biafra struggle championed by IPOB has nothing to do with the so called Biafra Liberation Army and/or a Government in Exile which one double agent is parading himself as Prime Minister of.

“IPOB is a global peaceful movement of millions of people who are fighting for the restoration of Biafra. We are not a government, and we do not have an Army, nor do we have a government body anywhere in the world.

“The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra IPOB is Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. The administrative and decision-making body of IPOB is the Directorate of State (DOS) with units and offices in many countries.

"We have remained peaceful and have never turned to arm struggle. IPOB’s demand from the Nigeria government is a dialogue and agreement on a Biafra referendum date, not war”.

While making clarifications on the activities of the Eastern Security Network (ESN) a branch of the group, Powerful said: “The international community and civil societies should take note that Biafra struggle under IPOB has no army.

“Our leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and IPOB worldwide, established and inaugurated on December 12, 2020, a vigilante outfit named Eastern Security Network (ESN).

ESN operatives were armed volunteers with a mandate to fight against the murderous fulani terrorists and jihadists code-named herdsmen who were killing and butchering our people and raping our women in our territory.

“ESN operatives do not wear military uniforms. These well-trained ESN operatives have remained loyal and focused to their mandate under the command of DOS. That is why the murderous activities of Fulani terrorists which were rampant before the lunch of ESN, have been drastically reduced.

“On the other hand, IPOB members are unarmed civilians who volunteer to contribute their time and resources towards the Biafra Self-Determination project. We neither bear arms nor are involved in violent activities.

"The sponsored criminals seen parading as Biafra Liberation Army are the double agents working for Simon Ekpa against Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and the IPOB struggle.

Kanu’s Counsel tasks Igbo leaders to adopt resolutions against his detention, militarization

Aloy Ejimakor, the Special Counsel to incarcerated leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has called on Igbo leaders to use the opportunity of the “Umunna meeting of Ndigbo” currently ongoing in Owerri, Imo State, to adopt resolutions against his continued detention and the militarization of Igboland.

Ejimakor, in a post on his X account on Friday, said as leaders of thought in the South-East region deliberate in issues affecting the people, they should also focus their resolutions that will bring peace and stability to the zone.

"The ongoing ‘Umunna’ meeting of #Ndigbo in Owerri must adopt strong resolutions against the continued detention of MAZI NNAMDI KANU & the infamous militarization of Igboland,” he wrote.
