Science/TechnologyHow To Speed Up A Sluggish Android Smartphone by change247(op): 10:02pm On May 25, 2016
One of the disadvantages of retaining a phone after
the expiration of a two-year contract -- as many of us
do -- is that those older phones have accumulated a
few years' worth of digital gunk. They're clogged up like an aging sewer on the wrong side of town.
Just like on a PC, bits of app and OS code become
discombobulated -- orphaned from the parent
program. Onboard digital debris becomes disoriented
like a drunk stumbling out of a favored hole-in-the-
wall; jumbled lethargy sets in, and the device can take forever to start or become sticky in operation.
Well, just like a PC -- or a run-down apartment house,
for that matter -- you can freshen up a gloopy
smartphone. Here's how to go about speeding up a
slowing Android smartphone. Get Rid of Superfluous Apps The purpose of this procedure is not so much to free
space but to remove any apps that might be
performing poorly. Apps can contain all sorts of
trouble-prone, permissions-based polling, checking
and syncing. Step 1: Open the Settings area by touching the Settings cogwheel-like icon. Then scroll through to the
Apps menu item. In older versions of Android, it's
labeled Applications. Step 2: Touch the Downloaded tab and scroll through the list of apps. These are the apps that you've
installed over the years. Step 3: Touch the app label for any app that you haven't used in six months and press Clear Cache,
then Clear Data and then Disable or Uninstall,
depending on options proffered.
Tip: Be ruthless here and purge anything you're not
using -- it's a lot easier than identifying rogue
behavior app-by-app. Step 4: Test by restarting the phone and unscientifically identifying whether performance has
improved. Key benchmarks are time-to-start and
speed-of-scroll between home screens.
If the phone is feeling nimble again, you've identified
your issue. Make Some Space Step 1: Open the Apps menu item again from within Settings. Step 2: Choose Options and then Sort by size. Step 3: Scroll through the first few apps -- the most memory-hungry -- and clear the caches by pressing
the Clear Cache button within each App label. This will
free memory, allowing more operating headroom.
Then test. Step 4: Check storage by opening the Settings area again. Then scroll through to the Storage menu item.
View the Internal Storage graphical bar. If it's full,
with little space being indicated as available, install
LeveloKment's app Storage Analyser , available free in the Google Play store, and run it.
Tip: This app will identify the largest files on your
device -- files that may be phantom -- and allow you
to delete or move them off the device, thus freeing
space. Then test. Reinstall the Factory Stock
Software If the previous steps haven't solved the problem, this
likely will. Like rehab (or the drunk tank) for our
wrong-side-of-the-tracks inhabitant, this operation
may sound like a big deal and a lot of work, and
unfortunately it is, because you have to reconfigure
your apps.

Step 1: Open the Backup and Reset menu item from Settings and check Backup My Data along with your
Google account details if prompted.
Tip: Leave the phone connected to the Internet
overnight if you are newly creating a backup. This
will give the Google servers time to pluck the settings
data like WiFi connections and passwords, which it will restore later. You can skip this, but you'll have to
re-enter a bunch more stuff manually.

Step 2: Select Factory Data Reset from the same menu and follow the prompts to perform a full wipe
and OS reinstall.
Tip: Before a reset save, off-device, any internal
storage-stored media files, like captured
photographs. A reset wipes internal storage.

Step 3: Allow the phone to restart and follow the prompts to set up your Google account on the device
anew.

Tip: If your downloaded apps don't immediately
show, you can kick-start the installation from
Google's Play store My Apps menu item.

Step 4: Reconfigure your apps' settings. Tip: This is the tried-and-true method to get the phone
back to stock and a just-out-of-box state. Avoid
restoring from backups in this case because you may
reintroduce the issue or issues.

Science/TechnologyHow To Get Windows 8.1 On Your PC Now by change247(op): 7:23pm On May 24, 2016
How to Get Windows 8.1 on Your PC Now It's no secret that Windows 8 has met with only a
lukewarm reception, but life in the tech world
moves quickly, and now Windows 8.1 is on the
way. If you've installed Windows 8, it's worth downloading the
recently released free preview version of
Windows 8.1. By doing so, you will be able to take
advantage of the updated OS's personalization
and services improvements. The final build will be
out later this year. Curious Windows 7 users can also check out 8.1
by creating and installing an ISO file from the
Microsoft website. I've written about ISO-creating
concepts.
Windows 8 users update to Windows 8.1 through
the Windows Store. Here's how to go about it if you've already got Windows 8 installed.

Step 1: Verify that you have a recovery partition on your
hard drive. Access the Command Prompt from the
Windows 8 Search charm by entering the term
Command. Right click on the result and choose
Run as Administrator from the options.
Confirm at the prompts, and then enter the term "recimg /showcurrent" at the Command Prompt
to identify if there is a recovery image present.

Step 2: Create a recovery image if, in the previous step, a
"no active recovery image" error appears.
Create the image by creating a folder called
Refreshimage at the Command Prompt and then
entering "recimg -createimage c:\refreshimage"
and Enter. Tip: The create folder command is "mkdir c: \refresiimage" and then Enter.

Step 3: Create a USB recovery drive. This will allow you to
revert back to your previous install from external
media if you need to.
Enter the term Recovery in the Search charm and
touch or click Settings. Then choose Create a
Recovery Drive and the tool will open. Choose Copy the Recovery Partition from the PC to
the Recovery Drive checkbox and choose Next.
Then insert a USB drive, choose it from the options
presented and touch or click Next followed by
Create. Allow the file transfer to take place and
then choose Finish. Then remove and store the flash drive.

Step 4: Browse to the Windows 8.1 Preview Web page and choose the Get It Now button. Then follow the
prompts to open the file and allow the install to
take place. Tip: Back up your personal data before updating any operating system. An update to Windows 8.1
from Windows 8 should retain Windows settings,
personal files and most apps.

Step 5: Restart the PC when prompted, and then open the
Store by touching or clicking on the Store tile. Then
choose the Update Windows tile or any Update
Windows prompt.

Step 6: Select Download and allow the download to
proceed. Follow the prompts to restart and allow
the setup to proceed. Follow the prompts to set up
the account, including entering a security code
that can be sent by email when prompted.

Step 7: Explore the new features, which include
navigation arrows where there was previously
white space, and other navigation tools, like a
Windows icon for flipping between classic
desktop and Windows 8 Start page. Tip: You'll need your Windows 8 product key when you
update to the final edition of Windows 8.1 later
this year.

•Dr Olade (right), Dr Onabanjo(left) and one of their
workers. What drove four men to leave the lustre of
some developed countries, where they were
practising medicine, return home and set up a
specialist hospital? Passion, they say. OYEYEMI
GBENGA-MUSTAPHA writes Their first medical feat, after opening their hospital in
Lagos, came after treating a man, who was rejected
by three major hospitals, including a teaching hospital.
The patient fell from a 24-storey building and
smashed his skull. Though the patient lost an eye, he
is grateful that he is alive. The doctors who performed the ‘magic’ were Dr
Roger Olade, Dr Ayotunde Adeyeri, Dr Gbadebo
Adebayo and Dr Muyiwa Onabanjo.
They have many things in common. They were trained
in the country before going abroad in search greener
pastures in the 90s. But they were in touch with home by conducting trainings for their colleagues and
budding medics through the Lagos State Government,
especially on the use of high-tech medical devices. Like Onabanjo, Olade also trained at the University
College Hospital (UCH), the medical school of the
University of Ibadan (UI).
Their passion moved them to set up the Genesis
Specialist Hospital – to ensure that Medicine is
practised the way it should. They said they took the name from Genesis – a Greek word for
“beginning”.
According to Olade, Genesis Specialist Hospital was
set up to enhance the quality of healthcare delivery.
“The way things ought to be done. For instance,
nobody should pronounce a person dead until certain screenings and tests are performed. But what is rife
here is to give on patient right there in the car or
whatever mode of transportation brought same to a
hospital premises.
“When a patient is rushed into a hospital as an
emergency, the first thing to do is check for the pulses and other vital organs and signs. Then decide if same
should be placed on support machine before any
other thing. But it is ridiculous to see patients being
examined in the vehicles. And when the patient is
unconscious, same is pronounced dead. It is sad. That
is just an instance. There are so many others taken for granted here that could become libelous elsewhere in
a developed country,” he said.
Olade is the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of Genesis
Specialist Hospital. He practised internal medicine in
the United States for over 20 years. He said the only
the best can be expected from his team. He is a specialist in areas, such as internal medicine,
emergency medicine, critical care medicine and
preventive medicine.
“For instance, despite being charged exorbitantly for
bringing in some devices and medical equipment that
dig huge deep hole in our savings, in spite of poor energy supply that even damaged some of these
equipment, as a team we are not daunted. We are
inspired by the Health Minister, Prof Isaac Adewole,
our mentor and lecturer, now at the helm of affairs in
the nation’s health sector that things can only get
better. We are here for real to add our quota towards nation building.
“We are so determined to entrench quality care to
patients. We have a 10-bed facility and we provide
telemedicine services to our patients that wish to
communicate with their private physicians across the
world. We also utilise tele-medicine service for specialist physician consultations to assist with the
care of our patients in the hospital for e-ICU services,
surgical collaboration and general medical advice. The
benefits of telemedicine include- reducing patient and
family travel outside of the country, improves care
coordination and continuity and reduces the need for patient transfers between health care facilities. We
hold the ethics of medical profession. Not driven by
gain or money. We just want to express our love and
passion for what we love doing.”
Olade said his hospital is with a difference, created out
of need and purpose. “Our concept is borne out pf need for world standad medical care. The heartbeat of
Genesis Specialist Hospital is our staff that provides
the high quality care. The team is made up of top-
notch of US and UK board-certified physicians and
nurses.
‘’We are deploying state-of-the-art technologies and US-trained physicians to tackle critical health
challenges in the country particularly in the areas of
cancer, stroke, and heart diseases, among others.
Olade said: “Our focus is in critical care medicine and
surgeries. We are a state-of-the-art facility with one of
the best intensive care units (ICU) in the country. Our goal is to contribute our expertise to the development
of the healthcare sector.”
According to him, it is high time the country
strategised to change the fortune of healthcare
practice in Nigeria and positions itself as a destination
for quality healthcare across Africa. “This is not just an investment for us, it is a passion
and a commitment towards contributing to the
development of our dear country. We want to play a
role in reversing medical tourism. Genesis Specialist
Hospital is owned by a group of US-trained physicians,
with an attitude that people do not have to leave the country for medical care. We have started training
other physicians through our conferences,” he
added.
Olade said public health education and emergency
preparedness were still lacking in the country.
“Almost half a million people are infected yearly with Lassa fever in West Africa. To prevent severe
outbreaks, the focus should be on educating the
vulnerable population about personal hygiene and
public health. Our emergency preparedness should be
on point,” he added.
Olade’s partner, Onabanjo said: “We are here to provide the best possible healthcare available, we will
not compromise. We are committed to respecting and
protecting the rights of our patients and families. We
are here to alter the landscape of health care practice
in the country and its environs. To provide patient-
oriented world class healthcare and our values is hinged on integrity, exceptionalism, confidentiality
and compassion.”
Onabanjo, who has over 20 years experience in Public
Health and Internal Medicine, said the concept of
setting up the hospital was based on the need to
create world standard. “We are not just a typical specialist hospital, but a
centre with a focus on providing high quality care to
our patients. Everyone is an individual and so is the
pain they go through. We are trained to give a head-
to-toe assessment, discuss the pain and identify
treatment options. We want value-entrenched driven by passion for patient treatment and not money.
Orientation must change from making money to first
offering service to a patient,” he said.

PhonesApple Leak Confirms Massive New Iphone 7 by change247(op): 6:23am On Mar 12, 2016
The iPhone 7 won't be released until the
fall of 2016, so it's still several months
off. Apple's current flagship devices are
the iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6s Plus,
released to the public in September of
2015. Though we have months to go until the iPhone 7 launches, rumors have
already been trickling out, giving us
some details on what we might see
when the device is released.
Apple has used an alternating "S"
naming formula to mark years where the iPhone does not receive a major
redesign since the debut of the iPhone
3GS in 2009. Releases have been as
follows: 2007 - iPhone 2008 - iPhone 3G 2009 - iPhone 3GS 2010 - iPhone 4 (new design) 2011 - iPhone 4s 2012 - iPhone 5 (new design) 2013 - iPhone 5s 2014 - iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus (new design) 2015 - iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus The next-generation iPhone is expected
to be called the iPhone 7. 2015 marked an "S" iPhone upgrade year that
introduced new features such as an
improved camera and a better
processor, but 2016 will bring an even-
year upgrade that will include an all- new iPhone design in addition to new features.
Apple is said to be working on finalizing
the iPhone 7's body so we don't know
exactly what it will look like, but a
reliable source tells MacRumors it
continues to use a design similar to the design of the iPhone 6s, but without a
rear protruding camera and with no
antenna bands across the back of the
device. Antenna bands are expected to
remain at the top, bottom, and sides of
the iPhone. Mockup of iPhone 7 case showing flush rear camera and no antenna bands across rear. Internal specs aren't yet known, but we
can speculate Apple will continue on its
path of introducing more powerful,
efficient devices that grow thinner with
each design iteration. The iPhone 7 and
iPhone 7 Plus are expected to include next-generation A10 processors manufactured by TSMC.
Apple will continue releasing two versions of each iPhone, so we can expect to see an iPhone 7 and an iPhone
7 Plus in 2016. Apple is said to be
planning to stick to the 4.7- and 5.5-inch
screen sizes it first introduced with the
iPhone 6 and 6 Plus.
Apple is rumored to be aiming to make the iPhone 7 nearly as thin as the 6.1mm iPod touch, mainly through the removal of the 3.5mm headphone
jackand the implementation of a thinner Lightning port. Eliminating the headphone
jack will give Apple more internal space
for other components, and Apple will
also keep the device slim with the
continued use of in-cell panels and TFT-
LCD display technology. Apple may replace the headphone jack on the
iPhone 7 with a second speaker for
stereo audio.
With no headphone jack, wired
headphones will connect to the iPhone 7
using its Lightning port and Bluetooth headphones will connect wirelessly.
Apple is rumored to be working on
Lightning-equipped EarPods to sell
alongside the device.
There may be some distinguishing
features between the iPhone 7 and the larger-screened iPhone 7 Plus. The
iPhone 7 may ship with 2GB RAM, while
the iPhone 7 Plus includes 3GB RAM, and
there could be a different camera
system. According to rumors, Apple may actually be planning to introduce two versions of the iPhone 7 Plus -- one with a single lens like the iPhone 7 and a second with a dual-lens camera system that offers DSLR-like image quality with 2-3x optical zoom and improved performance in low light conditions.
We still have a long wait until the launch
of the iPhone 7, but the iPhone 6s and 6s
Plus launched in September of 2015.
Check out our full roundup on those
devices for more information on Apple's latest iPhones.

No Headphone Jack
Apple may be able to decrease the
thickness of the iPhone 7 by eliminating
the headphone jack and instead adopting
an all-in-one Lightning port that will
support both charging and music
playback with Lightning-equipped headphones.
With the iPhone 7, headphones will need
a Lightning connector or a 3.5mm jack-
to-Lightning adapter to connect to the
Lightning port on the bottom of the
phone. The device will also support wireless Bluetooth headphones.
In addition to allowing Apple to shave
some thickness off of the iPhone 7 and
saving valuable internal space, requiring
headphones to connect through the
Lightning port will boost overall audio quality. Apple is also rumored to be
considering some new noise-canceling
technology to remove background noise
during music playback and phone calls,
but rumors have disagreed on whether
this will be introduced in the iPhone 7 or the next-generation iPhone.
Apple is said to be working on Lightning-
equipped EarPods that will ship
alongside the iPhone 7. They will be
similar to the existing EarPods that are
included in the iPhone box, but with a Lightning connector instead of a
headphone jack. As for the empty space
left by the headphone jack, Apple may be planning to replace it with a second speaker to introduce stereo sound in the iPhone 7.

Wireless Earphones

Along with Lightning-equipped EarPods
that will be made available with the
iPhone 7, Apple is rumored to be
working on a new set of wireless
Bluetooth earphones that would be sold
alongside the iPhone 7 as a premium accessory and alternative to the
EarPods.
While traditional Bluetooth headphones
have a wire that connects the left and
right ear pieces to each other, Apple is
said to be designing earphones that do not include a connective cord between
the ear pieces. These earphones would
be similar in design to the Bragi Dash, an
upcoming set of earphones that features
individual ear pieces for each ear.

Design

The iPhone 7 is expected to be thinner
than the iPhone 6s, with Apple using the
elimination of the headphone jack,
advances in in-cell panel technology, and
a slimmer Lightning port to make the
iPhone 7 slimmer, perhaps as thin as the iPod touch. Rumors suggest the iPhone 7
will be between 6.0mm and 6.5mm.
Apple's current iPod touch measures in
at 6.1mm, compared to 7.1mm for the
iPhone 6s and 7.3mm for the iPhone 6s
Plus. Information obtained by MacRumors and
confirmed by additional reports indicates
the iPhone 7's design will be somewhat
similar to the iPhone 6s, adopting the
same general design language. The
iPhone 7 and the 7 Plus are expected to feature a revamped camera that is flush
with the body of the device, eliminating
the protruding camera of the iPhone 6
and 6s. A mockup of what the iPhone 7 may look like. It is said to have a design similar to the iPhone 6s, with a slightly thinner body and no antenna bands across the middle of device's rear shell. Apple may also be planning to change
the design of the antenna bands on the
device, doing away with the thick white
antenna bands that are located across
the back of the Phone 6s rear shell. The
bands located at the top, bottom, and sides of the device are rumored to
remain on the iPhone 7. As for a thinner Lightning port, while Apple plans to slim it down, it will continue to be compatible with existing the Lightning connector and Lightning cables. Early rumors about the iPhone 7's design suggested the device may have a strengthened, water resistant frame that ditches Apple's traditional aluminum casing for "new compound materials, but a report from Mac Otakara
Apple is planning to implement improved
electromagnetic interference (EMI)
shielding techniques in the iPhone 7, with
the goal of individually shielding most of
the major chips in the device. EMI shields are used in iPhones and all other
electronic devices to prevent wireless
interference between different products.
Improved EMI shielding will perhaps
allow Apple to place the various chips in
the iPhone 7 closer together, allowing it to shrink down the device or leave room
for new components or a larger battery.
This could be one of the ways the
company will find extra space to make
the iPhone 7 thinner than the iPhone 6s.
Apple is rumored to be working on AMOLED displays for future iPhones, but
the technology will not be ready for the
iPhone 7. The iPhone 7 will continue to
use the same TFT-LCD display technology
used in the iPhone 6s.

IPhone 7 Vs. IPhone 7 Plus Vs.
"iPhone Pro"

With the release of the larger-screened
iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, Apple differentiated
between the two devices by including
Optical Image Stabilization in the iPhone
6 Plus for improved photo and video
capturing abilities. The iPhone 6s Plus continued to offer Optical Image
Stabilization while the iPhone 6s did not,
and it appears the iPhone 7 and the
iPhone 7 Plus could also see different
features, mainly when it comes to the
camera. According to reliable KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple may be planning to introduce two versions of the iPhone 7 Plus -- one that includes a single-lens camera like the iPhone 7 and one that includes a dual-lens camera system. This would be an unusual move for Apple because it would splinter the iPhone lineup, and it should be noted that the rumor has not yet been confirmed by a second source.
It is possible that Apple is testing
different iPhone 7 Plus prototypes,
leading to rumors of two planned iPhone
7 Plus devices. Rumors have suggested
Apple is testing and considering multiple dual-lens systems from several camera
makers in Japan, China, and Taiwan, and
suppliers are gearing up to begin
producing components for the lenses. There's also a questionable rumor sourced from Chinese site MyDrivers suggesting the iPhone 7 Plus with the dual-lens camera system could actually be dubbed the "iPhone Pro" to set it apart from the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus with a standard single-lens camera. This rumor should be viewed with some skepticism until confirmed.

Dual-Lens Camera Details

Apple is rumored to be working on at
least one version of the iPhone 7 Plus
that includes a a 12-megapixel dual-lens
camera system that takes advantage of
technology Apple acquired through the
purchase of Israeli camera company LinX Imaging last year. Image quality in
the iPhone 7 Plus could be greatly
improved with the introduction of a dual-
lens system, narrowing the gap between
photos taken with the iPhone and those
taken with a more robust DSLR cameras. iPhone 7 mockup with dual-lens camera system (Image: Computer Bild) LinX dual-lens technology offers several
potential benefits for the iPhone 7 Plus,
with the rumor specifically pointing
towards 2-3x optical zoom capabilities,
perhaps implemented through the use of
two lenses with different focal lengths. With a dual-lens camera system, images
captured are clearer and brighter with
less noise and truer color, allowing for
pictures that include more detail,
especially in low light conditions. An example of LinX's noise reduction technology. Far more detail is preserved in the LinX image on the right compared to the iPhone 5 image on the left. There's a possibility that a dual-lens
system like the one LinX created could
be used for depth mapping, allowing
users to do things like take 3D scans of
real world items or use depth
information to refocus an image. For additional information on what LinX
technology could mean for the iPhone 7,
make sure to check out our in-depth LinX
post.
Implementing LinX's camera system in
the iPhone 7 Plus would potentially allow Apple to cut down on the size of the
camera module, doing away with the
protruding rear camera lens. An example of how a dual-lens camera could potentially improve photos taken with the iPhone 7 Plus can be seen in the below video demonstration of similar technology from Corephotonics. Corephotonics' dual-lens system uses a wide-angle lens and a lens capable of 5X optical zoom and aggregates data from both to get a better picture.
As for the camera in the iPhone 7 and
the rumored single-lens iPhone 7 Plus,
there's no word on what improvements
may be introduced. If a version of the
iPhone 7 Plus is set to see major gains in image quality, it stands to reason the
iPhone 7 and/or the standard-lens
iPhone 7 Plus will also see significant
improvement, even if it is implemented
outside of a dual-lens system.

PhonesFive Amazing Things Your Windows Lumia Can Do by change247(op): 10:45pm On Mar 11, 2016
There is no denial that our mobile phones have
become an extension of who we are. They are our
first port of call for communication, business,
photography and entertainment.
Microsoft’s range of Windows Lumia phones are no
different. Not only are they sleek in design and easy on the wallet, but they also boast several features
that make everyday life easier. We picked out the top five things you probably did not
know your Lumia could do. We think they are game
changers no matter what you use your phone for. 1. Unlock your phone just by looking at it Thanks to Windows 10’s new Hello feature and an
iris scanner located in the top right hand corner of the
Lumia, unlocking your phone has never been easier.
You can unlock your phone easily and securely,
simply by looking at it – no PIN or password required. To do this, go to Settings > Personalisation > Lock
Screen > Sign-In Options. Find the Windows Hello
option and once you’ve taken a few seconds to
stare into the front-facing camera, you’re all set. 2. Turn your phone into a PC The Continuum feature allows you to turn your Lumia
into a fully-fledged PC simply by connecting it to
Microsoft’s Display Dock, a mouse and keyboard,
and an external display. Just like that, all your
phone’s content appears on the bigger screen,
automatically adjusted to fit the new size and resolution. It looks just like Windows 10 on a PC. Even better, when your phone is connected to the
external monitor and you are using the display to
work in the Office apps or let your kids watch a
movie, you can continue to use your phone to check
emails and answer calls. If you don’t have an
external mouse, you can also choose to use your phone’s screen as a trackpad. 3. Take great photos wherever you are The Lumia’s 20-megapixel sensor, Zeiss optics and
triple LED natural flash all mean the photos you take
on your phone are of higher quality than ever before.
Added to this, the phone’s camera reacts to its
environment so that you can get the best possible
shot no matter the conditions. For example, if you’re trying to get a photo of your child on the soccer field,
your phone will adjust its own shutter speed to
capture the shot without the usual motion blur.
