[quote author=wip7 post=98369863] Ph.D. Interview: Generally, HR employees, heads of departments, and mostly the potential supervisors are people who interview prospective Ph.D. applicants. Basic tips: ----All prospective Ph.D. students' interviews are different. Hence, when planning for your interview, be versatile and do not take the advice of others as definitive, but use it to build on. ----Respond to questions in a way that show that you are independent and original by engaging with fair statements in the discussion and supporting your claims. -----Don't pretend you know stuff that you don't. If something is not known to you, admit it. It's better than providing a vague response that signals that you don't know what you're talking about. ---Don't get too emotional and don't try to be funny because the interviewers likely come from different cultures. It's fine for excitement, just not if it's exaggerated. The common questions General questions--like background and personal qualities: Your academic background and experience in research work and academic environments would interest any Ph.D. supervisor. Briefly, you need to show your experience of writing papers, your capacity to work on long-term and short-term research projects, and some demanding skills/experience. Motivation: They're likely to ask you why you want to obtain that Ph.D. degree in that field. Since this will describe your dedication to the project, it is as vital as your academic skills. Ph.D. study-related questions: They would most definitely want to make sure that in this field of research you have some background information. So a way forward will be to recognize the key people in your field, studies that you can use as a basis for starting the study you are going to use, and methodologies. Your research proposal will mention both of these points. But be able during the interview to express and expand on them. Career plans: How the prospective Ph.D. influences your ambition and aspirations. Your own question: At the end of the interview you are generally asked to ask questions. Ask intelligent questions that likely buttress your interest and dedication in the program, you may ask about the facility, funding, knowledge-transfer and research-to-market potential. Thanks sir, I really appreciate 2 Likes |

Evening great scholar and prof wip7, I appreciate all those who have been providing selfless service in this forum in other we are exposed to research. Plz kindly help me review my motivation letter for PhD scholarship application. Thanks. MOTIVATION LETTER FOR PHD SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION My interest in science is a direct consequence of a childhood desire to solve the world challenges especially my country Nigeria and the desire to understand the world around me, this passion for science make me to opt for science class at the high school where I was exposed to various science subject ranging from physics, biology, chemistry, e.t.c. My interest in utilization and energy recovery of organic waste was planted during my industrial training at federal institute of industrial research Oshodi, Lagos (FIRRO) where I was posted to department of chemical fibre and environmental technology, during my stay I was expose to various research area on energy recovery and utilization from organic waste ,such as production of pulp and paper from underutilized agricultural waste, also I was involved in the development and production of antiseptic soap from neem oil, extraction of essential oil from orange peel for production of mosquito repellant also, I was involve in extraction of potash from cocoa pod as source of alternative material for soap production. In line with my burgeoning interest in energy recovery and agricultural waste as an alternative raw material, my undergraduate B.TECH thesis was on utilization of brewery spent grain as alternative adsorbent in removal of pollutant in Nigeria petroleum product, objective of this study was production of activated carbon from agricultural waste. This passion was also fueled during my experience during my internship at eagle package as a quality control and assurance at eagle package where various waste generated at each production unit was recycle and reuse as new feed for production. The above desire push me to pursue the master‘s degree In Environmental Chemistry in preparation for a career in environmental science and green technology, which I was very passionate about prior to graduate studies at Ladoke Akintola University Ogbomosho Nigeria, however, coursework, research and interdisciplinary interaction during my master program exposed me to the enormous potentials embedded in environmental chemistry and its applicability in fields ranging from environmental monitoring, health risk assessment, green technology and organic waste treatment and energy recovery .my degree in chemistry and Mtech in environmental chemistry provide a dynamic platform through with I can navigate into other discipline with little or no limitation. The keen interest in energy recovery from organic waste and the slogan acquire RRR (reuse, recycle and recovery) during my master push me to lead a team of young researcher on a project in production of biogas and treatment of animal waste prior to use as manure on crops. It will be a dream come true to be taught by an outstanding faculty and outstanding research team to have a Broad-view of knowledge on this subject matter in a suitable and supportive teaching and learning environment ,in particular, the opportunity to join in Queen university especially environment bioreactor lab at the Department of Chemical Engineering which also prides herself of several state of art facilities available for teaching, learning and research which also made one of the best Ranked university in the world. Additionally getting enrolled in this progamme will also give me an opportunity to meet, interact with vibrant international graduate student’s communities from different related fields, I do believes this will further exposed me to a well-rounded preparation for a successful future career. Conclusively, upon my return to my country, I believe strongly that the skills and knowledge this programme would have imparted into me will put me on a sound footing in becoming a leading academic in this filed, and also help to bridge the gap research and practice in my country. 2 Likes 1 Share

Education / School-reopening-fg-presents-proposed-guidelines-to-nass/ by chem58: 9:21pm On Jun 23, 2020 |
https://punchng.com/school-reopening-fg-presents-proposed-guidelines-to-nass/ The Federal Government has submitted proposed guidelines for the reopening of schools across the country to the National Assembly. The Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba made the presentation on Tuesday during a meeting with the Senate Committee on Basic and Secondary Education. According to the News Agency of Nigeria, he intimated the lawmakers of the ministry’s plans for students to resume across the country The FG had in March shut schools across the Federation as part of measures to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus disease. At the presentation today, the minister said, “In the document provided, we have suggested how we can move our education sector forward during this pandemic. “We don’t want to make it known at this time so that some people will not take our proposed guidelines for school reopening. “Even if the Senate has not called us, we would have come to you to discuss with you because we have already discussed with the House of Representatives. All we need to do is to come up with measures that would ensure the safety of students and teachers. We can design a plan that would ensure that not all the students resume at the same time. We could probably start with the exit classes. “We could have the number of students that would go to school for both morning and afternoon sessions. “We have to be innovative in our approach to save our educational sector in this country because nobody knows how long the virus will be with us.”

Education / Drama In Senate As RMRDC Boss Lists ‘kilishi’ As Research Breakthrough by chem58: 7:52pm On Jun 08, 2020 |
There was a mild drama at the Senate on Monday when the Director-General of the Raw Materials Research and Development Council, Professor Hussain Ibrahim, identified the development of Kilishi technology as its major breakthrough since the agency’s creation, 33 years ago. Ibrahim, who appeared before the Senate Committee on Science and Technology to brief the senators on the activities of his agency, caused a stir when he said the Kilishi technology was the only major breakthrough it had successfully developed for commercial use.The Chairman of the Senate panel, Senator Uche Ekwunife, had asked the DG to tell Nigerians what specific raw material the agency had successfully produced in the country in partnership with other research institutes. Ekwunife said, “Your core mandate is to develop local materials. Can you tell us the local raw materials you have developed in the areas of health, brewery, construction, science, and technology, or agriculture? “Just give us the synopsis of what you have developed or generated for local industries. Tell us about your breakthrough.” An elated Ibrahim proudly told the panel that despite its lack of laboratory, the 33-year-old agency had succeeded in producing the local meat delicacy for commercial production as part of the agency’s breakthrough. He said, “We have developed two varieties of Sorghum. We collaborated with agricultural research institutes, pharmaceutical industries because we produce ethanol from it and that is the basic raw material for the production of sanitizers. “Also from the same Sorghum, we developed other products like Glucose syrup, livestock feeds, material for breweries, and starch. Ibrahim threw the bombshell when the Chairman asked if the agency had developed the glucose syrup to the stage where Nigeria would no longer import it. The DG said, “We have not reached that stage. It goes through processes. We have tested it now but the stage we are now is the pilot stage. “That pilot stage will now lead to the optimisation of the products. At that pilot stage, we would now see if what we have finally done are technically feasible or commercially viable. We have to determine that. “After we had determined that. We will now ask relevant industries to take them for mass production. “In our 30 years of research activities, we are still the largest research Institute. But to be candid with you, we are making progress. “For now, we have developed technology to optimize Kilishi production. Research activities take time.” His submission led to prolonged laughter from the audience but drew the anger of the lawmakers. A member of the panel, Senator Clifford Ordia said, “is this the success story that you are going to tell us after 33 years? https://punchng.com/drama-in-senate-as-rmrdc-boss-lists-kilishi-as-research-breakthrough/ Drama in Senate as RMRDC boss lists ‘Kilishi’ as research breakthrough Classic version marfeel logo
