Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said the $1.5 billion earmarked by the Federal Government for the renovation of the moribund Port Harcourt refinery is suspicious. According to him, the nation cannot afford such a huge allocation to the comatose refinery considering the poor economy with the unemployment rate standing at 33 percent and 17 percent inflation. In a statement on Thursday, which he personally signed, Atiku said: "To therefore budget the sum of $1.5 billion to renovate or turn around the Port Harcourt Refinery would appear to be an unwise use of scarce funds at this critical juncture for a multiplicity of reasons. "First of all, our refineries have been loss-making for multiple years, and indeed, it is questionable wisdom to throw good money after bad. “At other times, I have counselled that the best course of action would be to privatise our refineries, so they can be run more effectively and efficiently. https://thenationonlineng.net/1-5bn-for-p-harcourt-refinery-renovation-suspicious-atiku/

Regina, the first wife of former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, has described his estranged wife, Precious Chikwendu as a sick liar. In a statement at the weekend, Regina said: ‘‘Precious Chikwendu, a strange woman that he took under his roof, married under law and custom, and lived with for seven years. Who are you trying to fool? You are nothing but a wretched ingrate and God will punish you and all your siblings for your ingratitude and lies. ‘‘Precious, you are just a sick woman and a big liar. I know you collected over half a million USD dollars from Femi within the first few months of meeting him for a fake investment. “We have witnesses to prove it and remember that you even asked me to thank him for it. This is the dream of a Lagos crack dealer: to see the sun rise daily in its silvery splendour while the city stirs to hustle and thrill seekers pursue a new kind of “jonzing.” His name is Kola but “customers” call him O’ngbana. At 49, O’ngbana swaggers through Ipodo like a cocky prince of the barrio. Amid the shanty in Ikeja, Lagos, he made a killing everyday until COVID-19 struck, dwindling patronage to a trickle. Business is at a scary low. A dribble here, a trickle there, makes O’ngbana very worried. “People don’t have money to eat let alone smoke crack (adulterated cocaine). But I have my loyal customers. Come rain or shine, they will always show up,” he said, and forlornly recalled the glory days of his hustle, when he made as much as N10, 000 in a day and about N50, 000 in a week, dealing crack and Indian Hemp. Before the pandemic, O’ngbana enjoyed cozy patronage as “students, teenagers commercial sex workers, street urchins, police officers and soldiers” thronged his stall for their daily fix. “Patronage often increased around midnight, especially on weekends, when customers (persons with drug dependence) sought me out,” he said. Proudly asserting his dominance in the seedy settlement, he led me down a rough tract into an alley, explaining how to locate him on a week day and a weekend. We walked down Ipodo’s dingy streets into a decrepit shed built as an outcrop from a begrimed bungalow. Outside, a smothering stench clung to the air, like a warning through the maze of heads and bloodshot eyes, burning holes into our frames. Inside, a stunning stash of drugs — crack cocaine, ecstasy, heroin, authentic cannabis and its clones shimmered atop a wooden table. The hard drugs are designed to mimic the effects of Schedule I and II substances like unadulterated cocaine, heroin and amphetamines — and every single one of them is illegal. Nigerians have been raging over claims by the National Security Adviser (NSA) Major General Babagana Monguno (Rtd) that monies meant for the purchase of arms may have been misappropriated by the immediate ex-Service Chiefs. Monguno, who made the disclosure in an interview with the Hausa Service of the BBC, further stated the new Service Chiefs have not seen the arms bought by their predecessors. According to the NSA, it is still unclear how much money President Muhammadu Buhari has spent on arms and other equipment to fight terrorism and banditry in the country. He said the government was working hard to address the ongoing security crisis, "which some Nigerians saw as a serious setback." According to him: "No one knows what happened to the money, but God willing the President will investigate to find out where it went or where the goods went. "As long as there is no proper investigation, I will not say anything but the money is gone, the goods are not seen and the new Security Chiefs say they have not seen it. "Some may be on their way from the United States, England or elsewhere, but now I don't see them on the ground. The President has done his best to provide out-of-pocket funds but the goods have not been procured". The revelation outraged Nigerians, especially on social media, who wondered if Buhari rewarded the ex-Service Chiefs with ambassadorial posting to cover up for the alleged misappropriation. But Monguno recanted a few hours after the interview. He claimed to have been quoted out of context. The Office of the National Security Adviser, in a statement, said Munguno did not categorically say that monies meant for arms procurement were missing under the former Service Chiefs. It said: "The attention of the Office of the National Security Adviser has been drawn to some media reports regarding Armed Forces equipment during an interview with the BBC Hausa service. "We would like to state that the NSA was quoted out of context as he did not categorically say that funds meant for arms procurement were missing under the Former Service Chiefs as reported or transcribed by some media outlets from the BBC interview. https://thenationonlineng.net/outrage-as-nsa-recants-on-alleged-missing-arms-funds/ |

A manhunt has been launched by the Ogun State Police Command for a man who allegedly set a 40-year-old lover he met on Facebook ablaze, KUNLE AKINRINADE reports. An affair involving a single mother and a man she met on Facebook has ended in tragedy. Folakemi Akorede, a mother of one, died two days after she was set ablaze by her live-in lover, Olayemi Ojo, after an altercation. Sources close to the two lovebirds said their romance began about four years ago when the deceased woman met Ojo on Facebook and they exchanged phone contacts and shared conversations on Facebook Messenger. At the time, according to sources, Ojo, who was based in Italy, kick-started a sizzling romance with Folakemi and sent her several gift items. An insider who confided in our correspondent revealed that Ojo even paid for new accommodation for Folakemi in a bid to make her comfortable. The Nation gathered that Ojo returned to Nigeria on December 21, 2020 and moved in with Folakemi at her new residence at No 11 Alawonle Street, Ojo Ade area, off Dalemo Egbado Road, Alakuko, Ifo Local Government Area, Ogun State. Trouble, however, started when Ojo allegedly discovered that some family members he was sending money to help him build his personal house had played a prank on him. Ojo was said to have been miffed that Folakemi did not help him monitor the people he paid to build the house. The matter was said to have degenerated into a row, following which Folakemi, populary called Mummy Favour, left the house for about one week. The row however took a tragic turn on February 9, 2021 when she returned home thinking that Ojo's anger would have subsided. But while the deceased woman was seated on a chair in the living room, Ojo, who was said to have pretended that he was no longer angry with her, allegedly poured petrol on her from behind and set her ablaze before she could rush out of their apartment. Ojo, who is now on the run, allegedly took Folakemi's mobile phone with him before he vanished into the air. Folakemi, a 40-year-old native of Ado-Ekiti, was rushed by neighbours to a public hospital where she allegedly died two days later from the severe burns she received from the incident. Sources at the residence of the deceased said they were shocked at the gruesome killing of the woman they described as friendly. A neighbour who spoke in confidence said: “It happened that she had been dating a man called Ojo Oluyemi since about four years ago. They met on Facebook, because at that time, Ojo was living in Italy. “They met and started their affair on the internet. The man paid the rent for the apartment where the woman was staying “On December 21 last year, the man came to Nigeria and stayed with the woman. The man was said to have sprinkled petrol on her and set her ablaze. https://thenationonlineng.net/facebook-love-gone-awry/ |
