MRO sited in Lagos because of difficulties securing land in the Southeast -

Igbo people never wanted to make land available for construction of multi million dollars MOR facility in either Enugu or Anambra. The Chairman of Air Peace airline, Chief Allen Onyema, has accused Ndigbo of being resistant to development of their territory, in the south east.


Onyema's allegation came after an allegation by certain Igbo people that he (Onyema) left the south east to situate a multi million dollars Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility in Lagos instead of the south east.

Onyema washed his hands off the allegation, stating that it were the same Igbo people who never wanted to make land available for construction of the facility in either Enugu or Anambra.

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, recently, flagged off the commencement of the construction of Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Lagos, which sparked the allegation against Onyema.


When the project is completed, Nigerian airlines, the presidential fleet, and the Nigeria Air Force fleet would no more ferry their aircraft to overseas facilities for major checks, which gulps a lot of foreign exchange.

The facility will save Nigerian domestic carriers about N360 billion worth of foreign exchange annually, as Air Peace alone spends about N180 billion on maintenance in one year. The facility will create approximately 50,000 jobs and will be situated on a vast 34,000 square meter land at the Lagos airport.


The MRO will also attract airlines from West and Central Africa, other parts of the world to bring their aircraft to be maintained here in Nigeria and thus bring in foreign exchange because such facility is in high demand all over the world.

Reacting to the accusation against him, Onyema said that he made every effort to site the project in the south east but was agreed to buy any land for the project that is taking 34,000 square meters of land.

He rejected the accusations by citizens of the South-East that he neglected his home base in citing the billion-naira MRO at Lagos Airport instead of Enugu or Anambra Airports.

He said that Air Peace was frustrated out of its original intention to site the project at Enugu Airport after approval by the Enugu State Government and investment of millions.

Onyema said, “On the Enugu thing, please check some news stories during the government of Governor Ugwuanyi. I visited the state officially several times, held meetings with the governor and his cabinet on my intention to be given land to build this MRO that, by God’s grace, will become the biggest in Africa on completion.

"Our intentions were announced. In fairness, the Governor truly wanted. However, the usual intrigues and selfish interests from unknown others thwarted our intentions. No one gave us the land. Some families started claiming ownership of some lands anticipated to be given to us. Airport land! The conflicts started. All my shuttles to Enugu came to nothing. I was pained.

"At the Anambra Airport, I paid for land for the MRO facility. I paid over N100m for land there. The next thing was some community and families warning me that the land at the airport belonged to them. That the state government had no right to even build the airport without their permission!

I moved on. The land is still there. I believe the time has come for Igbos to look in the mirror and see who their true enemies are. When they gaze into the mirror, the real enemy will be staring back at them. Let us, as a people, undertake self-examination before we start complaining!

People like you are why Nigeria is going backwards. The duty of the President is to govern the country to the best of his ability, not wait to see which State Governor is going to politically support him before he gives the State their due. There should be no preferential treatment in Government

The problem with many of you is that you criticize what you don't understand. It is good that you know that in a saner clime, the president should govern irrespective of party affiliations. Is Nigeria a sane country? Whatever agreement or affiliation Gov Soludo has with the president is between both of them and their political parties. Ndi Anambra are not APGA members. All they want is good governance and physical infrastructures and if it takes Soludo to feign a wrestling bout with Peter Obi in order for Anambra to secure a spot at the dining table, so be it!

Did you see the news that a gas pipeline is to be extended from Agbor into Onitsha enroute Akwa? Did you think the people that sidelined the entire SE from the gas infrastructure network during Buhari's administration forgot to include the SE? What about the Standard Gauge Rail Network? Wasn't it the same sidelining that they did whilst Rotimi Amaechi only took the fall on behalf of the president for reasons best known to him?

You should thank Soludo for being a Master Strategist like I said because he knew that with Peter Obi being the fiercest competitor Tinubu has at the moment, any animosity the central government holds towards Obi would cascade down to his home state of Anambra while the other 4 SE states will be getting what is due to them. Anambra can not afford to stand aloof because it wants to be both the face of opposition and the epicenter of the Biafran struggle. That move is suicidal at this point.

Is Umahi not taking FG project to his state of Ebonyi? Is Uzodinma not getting his fair share? Alex Otti doesn't even have to act for now because he has Benjamin Kalu the Deputy Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives and Orji Uzo Kalu (a high ranking senator and a friend to the administration) to get the share of Abia e.g from a common airstrip to a partnership in the construction of an international airport. Enugu has aligned with the centre codedly and you can see that most FG projects within Enugu are getting the required attention. Now, what has Anambra gotten so far? Ifeanyi Ubah that is of the APC is dead and hasn't been replaced. Who do you think that can arm - twist the FG in the legislative arm into giving Anambra her fair share? Does Bianca have the liver to influence any FG project into Anambra other than earning her salary as Minister for State and looking pretty? This was the same thing the entire SE did during Buhari that everything that was due to the region was side-stepped. Even Obiano played central politics and that was how he could get the license for the airport. Don't you think that Soludo can get a fully international airport status if he also played central politics? You want only Anambra to be playing local politics when you know that the type of projects the state need at this point in time is that which only the FG can execute.

If what it will take is for Soludo and his APGA members to form an alliance with Tinubu and the APC for Anambra to get the goodies from the centre, so be it. The other political parties have the right to pitch their own tent with Peter Obi's party. It is freedom of association, isn't it? It is not everything you need somebody to explain to you. The Bible told us that the wise men came from the East but I don't think that statement still holds true. Little wonder other regions constantly say that Igbos don't know how to play politics. You all believe in forming opposition when you know that even if the FG by - passes the entire SE for another 20 years, nothing will happen other than for Igbos to keep shouting marginalization.

For those of you complaining about Tinubu's visitation, I don't think you know what playing politics is about. Soludo is a Master Strategist. You want Anambra to be the face of opposition to the government at the centre while other SE governors align themselves politically and gain certain favours at the detriment of Anambra, isn't it? Is Anambra the only state affiliated with Biafra? Does Anambra have any high ranking senator or house of representatives member in the APC that can corner any meaningful FG project to the state? Imo and Ebonyi are APC states and they are getting projects. Enugu is aligning underground and getting what it wanted. Abia State has Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives and Orji Uzo Kalu and you saw why from building an airstrip, Abia partnered to upgrade it to a full international airport. What has Anambra gotten since playing opposition? The 2nd Niger Bridge was Buhari's magnanimity because of his friendship with Chuba Okadigbo. Yet, you are all running your mouths here. Did you see Soludo appealing to the president on certain critical infrastructures and assistance the state needed? Did you also see the president assuring him and Anambra of granting him his requests? Even Obiano played politics well and that was the reason he got the approval from Buhari's government for the airport. You can pitch your own state against the central government if you like but you all should leave Soludo and the ANSG alone.

What incentives can Anambra State Government give any investor to warrant him/her make the business decision of investing in such a capital - intensive project in the state? Have you forgotten that the entire SE is bereft of FG's infrastructure? Are physical infrastructures not a "sine qua non" for investment? You ought to know that there's a deliberate policy by the Nigerian System to stifle the SE and any state that wants to break out from the cocoon of underdevelopment has to bankroll every fund required for the project in question either from its own meagre resources or through Bank Loans.

Did you forget so soon that Buhari told some foreign donor agencies that any help they would want to give to Nigeria should be channelled towards the North as if it was only the North that needed deliverance? Was that not the FG trying to corner even foreign aids to the president's region at the detriment of other regions? Do you think that it wasn't the FG's policy that made Lagos the Center of Excellence? Outside the 2nd Niger Bridge, has the FG embarked on anything to improve the economic activities in the SE? The only thing the FG did was relocate all the security agencies to the SE where they mount Checkpoints at every 50 metres Interval collecting 200 Naira from motorists. Doesn't that create the impression of a hostile environment? Who would want to invest in such a restive environment?

The government of Soludo that is already taking the bull by the horns in providing the resources to, at the least, put one or two buildings in place should be heavily commended. If Soludo were to be waiting for foreign investors because, clearly, no local investor from the other regions wants to go to the SE for anything because of the "One Liegeria" they constantly preach, is it our Igbo brothers and sisters, who would prefer to bury every of their investments in all the other regions except theirs, we should be waiting for? Gov. Soludo did the right thing by starting the project and should be commended.

Guys, what is happening to the Light of the Nation Tower project? Is anything still happening at the site? The project is supposed to be rounding off by now since the construction period was put at 2 months.

How does the creation of Anioma State reduce FG's presence and representations accruing to Ndi Igbo? It baffles me that we always feign intelligence but from all ramifications, it seems like we are really lacking upstairs. Instead of pushing for all our Igbo brothers and sisters that were deliberately carved out from the SE and merged with the SS and NC so as to form that major political block and reclaim our stance as a major ethnic group, you guys are convulsing over Orlu State.

For all you advocates for Orlu State, et al., are you trying to say that by further partitioning your small region into bits and fragments because of the embedded greed of some of your political 'leaders' who, instead of distributing infrastructural developments so as to ensure that all nooks and crannies within the state gets developed, chose to concentrate all the developmental infrastructures within their own enclave at the detriment of the state, Ndi Igbo and the SE at large will be better served?

I am still trying to wrap my head around why a certain number of you guys would prefer splitting yourselves up instead of expanding into a much more powerful block. Has it ever crossed your minds that the carving out of our people into Benue, Delta, and Rivers States was deliberately done so as to reduce the bargaining power of the SE? Why do you guys think they often refer to the SE as 'Dot'? Now that an opportunity has presented itself for that additional state, even though we know that it is going to be an exercise in futility, you people, because of your own parochial interests, have started to derail the whole process by trying to make a state out of your villages.

The only state the SE needs for now is a state that will be acknowledged as our Igbo brethrens who, currently, are domiciled outside the SE region and are sure to be incorporated back into the Igbo fold. Any additional state that is to be created must not be for further partitioning of any of the 5 states within the SE but instead be one that pulls together all the Igbos from Benue, Kogi, Rivers, etc. For now, only Anioma State cuts it!

Instead of seeking a way of how to encourage our Igbo brothers and sisters that were carved into the SS region to get the extra state that is to be added to the SE, you guys are busy partitioning yourselves into smaller bits because you lack the ability to use state resources to develop all zones simultaneously.

A leader from one zone will become so selfish that he would want to concentrate every development only within his domain. It is very clear that the problem with Igbos have, all this while, been self inflicted. If we discriminate against ourselves like this without this Biafra, tell me what will happen if we finally break out of Nigeria? Every single Hamlet would want to be a state because of senseless greed. Everybody will aspire to be president at the same time simply because one zone will want to corner everything at the detriment of the others forgetting that collective resources are for the development of the whole territory.

Somebody, the other day, was even hoping for Anambra to be partitioned and lumped into Orlu to form Orlu State while holding onto his dear Enugu State. He was questioning why Nsukka wants to form a state of their own but he has already carved out certain areas of Anambra that, in his opinion, will be better off joining Orlu to form the new state. Later these same group of people will start shouting that all the Igbos domiciled in the SS region are Igbos, isn't it? The all round development going on at the same time in Anambra keeps them awake at night so it would gladden their hearts to partition Anambra in order for the lagging state to catch up. Is this not wizardry? Little wonder why those Igbos in the SS detest been identified as Igbos because they feel one greedy zone will hijack their resources and form "King Kong" over them. Something must be fundamentally wrong with Ndi Igbo. Na wa for una o!

While Onitsha Market was deliberately left to decay with no plans in sight to transform it into a modern commercial city, Delta State Government was busy pimping Asaba to corner the commercial activities Onitsha was formerly known for. The usual turning a blind eye to everything.
You take a look at Awka Capital, there's nothing there in the resemblance of a capital city. Awka doesn't have to start and end with the Enugu-Onitsha Express and its Three (3) Obiano Bridges. We have ACTDA that is supposed to do exactly what FCDA does in Abuja but nothing is seen to be working other than the periodic allocation of lands to private estate developers for their own interests. Is anything wrong if Gov Soludo creates districts just like we have in Abuja where the ANSG can plan, design, and build the Dubai-Taiwan prototype? We don't even have to go to Dubai or Taiwan to get the requisite prototype as Abuja is always a case study if we want to get it right. If it is greenery we want, Abuja has it. If it is roads with walkways and bus stops, Abuja also has it. You visit some locations in Abuja and you find that all the electric cables are underground. Proper waste management and water supply, Abuja try for the porsh areas too. There are roads with setbacks as institutionalized in the Abuja Master Plan. You come to Anambra, every building has shanties attached to it as makeshift shops. You won't know which area is for Residential, Commercial, or Mixed. Every little space is a market. No setbacks, no greenery, no nothing! Abuja is called the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) but we still have Federal Capital City (FCC) within it where every other development stems from and spreads into the hinterlands. Can ANSG not replicate same? Can we not decide to go to a virgin land, if Awka indigenes are making it impossible, and deliberately build our own Awka Capital City inside the Awka Capital Territory? You see a picture of Awka, you see local villages just like the villages of everyone of us here. "Some of our villages sef dey planned pass the Awka sef". The worst part is that Gov Soludo even live(d) in Abuja and he has lived overseas as well. Can the ANSG not, as a matter of urgency, begin to develop the new Awka Capital City from the Government House axis by dualizing the roads to where he wants to be known as the new capital city? If Abuja is a "Tug of War" for us to model our capital after, can we not visit Akwa-Ibom and copy from them? ANSG talks of planting trees, I haven't seen one Elephant Grass planted anywhere. We speak of road construction here, Gov Otti is constructing roads with street lights and road markings. JB is currently working in our backyard yet we can't even summon the courage to either approach them to even give us an estimate for for construction of any important road or the channelization of drainages in the Onitsha metropolis. "Na only talk we wan dey talk?" Is there any road in Anambra with a designated Bus-Stop? No plan for public transport system while we have one of our own in the person of Innoson. Can ANSG not partner with Innoson to produce for us special CNG buses with ramps for people living with disability? What is the benefit of having our own Innoson if we can't brandish our own unique custom made buses? Thank God for the new roads with walkways that are not even friendly to people living with disabilities. But, Charlie still try small sha! To be frank, I don't think we are serious.
