PoliticsBuhari Seeks 'fearless' Judges To Try Looters by Chidave20(op): 4:02pm On Aug 17, 2015
President Muhammadu Buhari has commenced the process of identifying a few fearless and courageous judges who will be saddled with the
responsibility of prosecuting persons who have been found to have stolen
national resources, THE PUNCH has learnt. Buhari had while granting audience to members of the National Peace
Committee led by Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar in the Presidential Villa,
Abuja on Tuesday disclosed that the prosecution of the indicted persons
would commence in a matter of weeks. “Those who have stolen the national wealth will be in court in a matter of
weeks and Nigerians will know those who have short-changed them,” the
President had told his guests. Our correspondent however learnt on Sunday that the prosecution would
not be open to “just any judge.” It was learnt that the President was committed to ensuring that only
judges who would expedite action on the cases and would be fearless in
discharging their duties would be enlisted for the prosecution. A source confided in our correspondent that that was one of the
assignments Buhari gave to the Prof. Itse Sagay-led Presidential Advisory
Committee Against Corruption which he set up on Monday. The source said it would not be necessary to set up special courts to try
corruption cases since efforts were already underway to identify judges
that would key into the President’s dream of ensuring that no looter was
left unpunished. He said, “We do not need to entertain any fear that the prosecution of
corruption-related cases will not be fast enough because many of our
courts are already weighed down by many cases. “The truth of the matter is that not all judges will be considered to take up
the cases of those who have stolen our commonwealth. “As a matter of fact, one of the assignments the President gave the
Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption led by Prof. Sagay is
to identify fearless and courageous judges that will handle the cases. “The idea is to ensure that the judges who will handle the cases will not
be just any judges. They must be those who will expedite actions on the
cases and discharge their duties with courage. “You can see that with this development, the issue of special courts for
corruption cases may not come. It is about special judges.” Our correspondent also gathered that Buhari was already considering
withdrawing national honours from any individual found to have looted the
nation’s treasury. It was learnt that the President’s position was that the nation should not
be seen to be honouring any fruadulent person. “The President will not hesitate to strip any corrupt person of national
honour. Can you honour a person for milking the nation dry? It is irrelevant
how long such persons have been bestowed with the national honours,
they will be stripped of them,” the source said. When contacted, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and
Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, said it was reasonable that anybody found to
be corrupt should be stripped of national honours. Adesina however said such withdrawal of national honours would not be
done until affected persons had been convicted by competent courts. “Although it has not been considered, it is reasonable that those found
guilty of corruption should be stripped of national honours bestowed on
them. However, this will not be done before conviction,” the presidential
spokesman said. While announcing the establishment of the Presidential Advisory
Committee Against Corruption on Monday, Adesina had said its brief was
to advise the present administration on the prosecution of the war against
corruption and the implementation of required reforms in Nigeria’s
criminal justice system. He said the committee was also saddled with the responsibility of
developing comprehensive interventions for achieving the recommended
reforms. www.saharareporters.com/2015/08/17/buhari-seeks-‘fearless’-judges-try-looters

Christianity EtcDid The Blessed Virgin Mary Die Before Her Assumption by Chidave20(op): 10:18pm On Aug 14, 2015
The
Assumption of Mary into Heaven at the end of her earthly life is not a
complicated doctrine, but one question is a frequent source of debate: Did
Mary die before she was assumed, body and soul, into Heaven? :From the
earliest Christian traditions surrounding the Assumption, the answer to
the question of whether the Blessed Virgin died like all men do has been "yes." The Feast of the Assumption was first
celebrated in the sixth century in the Christian East, where it was known
as the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos (the Mother of God). To this
day, among Eastern Christians, both Catholic and Orthodox, the
traditions surrounding the Dormition are based on a fourth-century
document called "The Account of St. John the Theologian of the Falling Asleep of the Holy Mother of God ." (Dormition means "the falling
asleep."wink That document, written in the voice of Saint John the Evangelist
(to whom Christ, on the Cross, had entrusted the care of His mother),
recounts how
the Archangel Gabriel came to Mary as she prayed at the Holy Sepulchre
(the tomb in which Christ had been laid on Good Friday, and from which He rose on Easter Sunday). Gabriel told the Blessed Virgin that her earthly
life had reached its end,
and she decided to return to Bethlehem to meet her death. All of the
apostles, having been caught up in clouds by the Holy Spirit,
were transported to Bethlehem to be with Mary in her final days.
Together, they carried her bed (again, with the aid of the Holy Spirit) to her home in Jerusalem, where, on the following Sunday, Christ appeared
to her and told her not to fear. While Peter sang a hymn, the face of the
mother of the Lord shone brighter than the light, and she
rose up and blessed each of the apostles with her own hand, and all gave
glory to God; and the Lord stretched forth His undefiled hands, and
received her holy and blameless soul. . . . And Peter, and I John, and Paul, and Thomas, ran and wrapped up her precious feet for the consecration;
and the twelve apostles put her precious and holy body upon a couch, and
carried it. The apostles took the couch bearing Mary's body to the Garden
of
Gethsemane, where they placed her body in a new tomb: And, behold, a
perfume of sweet savour came forth out of the holy sepulchre of our Lady the mother of God; and for three days the voices of
invisible angels were heard glorifying Christ our God, who had been born
of her. And when the third day was ended, the voices were no longer
heard; and from that time forth all knew that her spotless and precious
body had been transferred to paradise. "The Falling Asleep of the Holy
Mother of God" is the earliest extant written document describing the end of Mary's life, and as we can see, it
clearly indicates that Mary died before her body was assumed into
Heaven. The earliest Latin versions of the story of the Assumption, written
a couple of centuries later, differ in certain details but agree that Mary
died, and Christ received her soul; that the apostles entombed her body;
and that Mary's body was taken up into Heaven from the tomb. That none of these documents bear the weight of Scripture does not
matter; what matters is that they tell us what Christians, in both the East
and the West, believed had happened to Mary at the end of her life. Unlike
the Prophet Elijah, who was caught up by a fiery chariot and taken up into
Heaven while still alive, the Virgin Mary (according to these traditions)
died naturally, and then her soul was reunited with her body at the Assumption. (Her body, all of the documents agree, remained incorrupt
between her death and her assumption).
SportsBarcelona Investigated For Match Fixing by Chidave20(op): 10:28am On Jun 11, 2015
The Catalan press are reporting that Barcelona are being investigated
as part of a match fixing scandal that helped relegate Eibar from La
Liga. The news is being reported by both Sport and Mundo Deportivo, who claim that Barca's 2-2 draw with Deportivo La Coruna, at the end of the season,
was fixed, with Barca purposefully 'easing off', allowing Depor to secure
the all important point they needed to avoid relegation. Mundo are reporting that Depor defender Albert Lopo approached Xavi and asked the Barca captain if the newly crowned Spanish champions
could take their foot off the gas, words which Lopo apparently relaid to Canal+, believing that they would not make print. How very wrong he was. The match was a 2-2 draw which meant Deportivo stayed up at expense
of Eibar. Deportivo defender Albert Lopo has told Canal+ he asked Xavi to ease off. The LFP have opened an investigation and if proven, there's a good chance
Eibar and Deportivo will trade places, with Barca's punishment unclear at
this time. Of course, while no money has changed hands, IF Xavi has
agreed to tell his players to go easy and allow Depor to secure a draw,
that is as good as fixing a result and has caused the unfair relegation of
Eibar. Perhaps the former club captain shouldn't get too comfy in Qatar, just yet..www.thesportbible.com/articles/barcelona-under-match-fixing-investigation

PoliticsPastor Tunde Bakare Collapse During Lectures by Chidave20(op): 11:51am On May 19, 2015
One of Nigeria’s most outspoken pastors, Tunde Bakare,
yesterday collapsed in Lagos while giving a lecture to a
gathering of investors. Pastor Tunde Bakare A close associate of Mr. Bakare, who oversees the Latter Rain
Ministries, told SaharaReporters that the pastor’s collapse
owed to exhaustion. “Pastor Bakare has been making a
whirlwind of lectures recently. He attended the graduation of
one of his kids in the U.S. and has held several meetings in
the last week,” the source disclosed. Our correspondent learned that Mr. Bakare became
lightheaded and collapsed as he delivered the lecture during
Capital Investors dinner at the Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos.
An eyewitness said there was a swelling on his forehead after
he fell. Mr. Bakare was rushed to Reddington Hospital in
Lagos. He was treated and discharged, and one source said he was now resting at home. Mr. Bakare is one of Nigeria’s most well known critics of bad
governance as well as religious corruption. In 2011, he ran as
the vice presidential candidate to Muhammadu Buhari on the
ticket of the now defunct CPC. We could not reach the pastor for his comment. www.saharareporters.com/2015/05/19/pastor-tunde-bakare-collapses-during-lecture
PoliticsAmaechi Calls For Probe Of Police, Army’s Roles In Last Elections by Chidave20(op): 6:43am On May 18, 2015
GOVERNOR Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State has called for the probe of the roles played by the Nigerian Army and the Police in the last general elections. Amaechi, yesterday at a thanksgiving service by the Greater Together Organization of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Port Harcourt, said the Police and the Army were allegedly used to rob the APC of victory in the last elections. “Let us ask the Federal Government to investigate the crisis in Rivers State. The Army should be investigated because they participated in the general elections. “Why do I have to thank God? For our lives. He answered our prayers by making General Muhammadu Buhari the president. Imagine if Buhari did not win? PoliticsEx-igp Abba Removed For Indiscipline In The Force by Chidave20(op): 6:44am On May 13, 2015

The Police Service Commission explained, yesterday, that the former Inspector General of Police, Mr. Suleiman Abba was removed from office because of increasing cases of indiscipline in the rank and file of the force. The explanation came on a day the Police Council confirmed Mr. Abba’s successor, Mr. Solomon Arase as the substantive Inspector General of Police. The chairman of the Police Service Commission, Mike Okiro, who spoke with newsmen after the Council of State meeting, yesterday, said the President told members of the council that the former IGP was removed because of increased cases of insdicipline among the rank and file of the force. His words: “I’m not part of the Presidency that removed him, so I cannot give adequate answer. Though at the meeting President Jonathan tried to explain to members, based on the question raised by one of the governors that Nigerians may want to know why the former IGP was removed. “The President, who was
very brief in his response said, during the period of the former IGP, a lot of indiscipline was noticed among the Police rank and file and as such he felt that a new IG should come and try his luck. That is what he said, though I cannot give details of that.” Meanwhile, the newly confirmed IGP, Mr. Arase, who spoke with state House correspondents after meeting with President Jonathan ,promised that no Nigerian would suffer injustice under his watch. “To Nigerians, I know that their expectations are high, but I can assure them that no Nigerian will suffer any injustice by my inaction or action,” he said. He said that under his watch, the welfare of officers and men would be a top priority as a well motivated personnel as the panacea for effective policing. “To my men, I will tell them that their welfare will be number one on my cardinal responsibilities. CrimePolice Arraign Student For Stealing Boyfriend’s phones by Chidave20(op): 7:36am On May 12, 2015
The Police on Monday arraigned a student, Juliet Mathew, 22, in an Oshodi Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, for allegedly stealing three phones, belonging to her boyfriend, valued at N90,000. Mathew, who resides at No. 22, Pipeline St., Iyana-Odo in Igando, near Lagos, is being tried for stealing. The Prosecutor, Cpl. Kehinde Olatunde, told the court that Mathew committed the offences on April 1 at No. 2, Ilare Close, Mafoluku, Oshodi. PoliticsPDP Jittery Over Six Arrested INEC Staff In Abia by Chidave20(op): 8:56am On May 11, 2015
The All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, has alleged that the ruling party in Abia State is working round the clock to compromise the Assistant Inspector-General, AIG, of Police, Zone 9, Umuahia, Mr. Usman Gwary, to release unconditionally the six members of staff of Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, arrested in Umuahia for allegedly attempting to take away seven card readers and result sheets from the Commission’s office.
But the PDP in a quick reaction, dissociated itself from the activities of the INEC staff.

Quoting an impeccable source at Zone 9, the party said the PDP had offered irresistible and mouth watering sum of money to the AIG to release the suspects and kill the report.
The party also noted that the missing card readers and result sheets were deployed in Obingwa Local Government Area, where a whopping 82,240 votes were credited to PDP against 1,952 votes for APGA, even when elections did not take place in the area.

However, sources at INEC said that no card reader was used for accreditation in Obingwa, Osisioma, Ugwunagbo and Isialangwa North local government areas during the governorship poll.

The list of arrested INEC staff includes the Head of ICT Dept., Engr. Herbert Ejiofor, Mr. Nnamdi Nwabuko, who was driving the materials out of INEC office at the time of his arrest, Amauche Ebi Dike, Charles Mba, Nkem Ichita, Uche Enyioma, Innocent Dire, all members of staff of the ICT department and the Secretary to the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Esther David.

Meanwhile, Abia State chapter of PDP has dissociated itself from the activities of some INEC staff who were arrested with some card reading machines illegally removed from the Commission’s state headquarters in Umuahia.

Abia PDP said it roundly condemned such an act and blamed it on the main opposition party in the state, APGA, which had earlier accused PDP of being behind the removal of the card readers, which it alleged were meant to be used to rectify the controversial votes from Obingwa Local Government Area.
But PDP said the report of the illegal removal of the card readers from Umuahia INEC was like a thunder bolt for the PDP in the state.

Speaking in a press briefing at the party’s state headquarters in Umuahia, the party’s Secretary, Mr. Charles Eseonu, said it “must have been a planned act orchestrated by enemies of free and fair elections in the state.”

A military source informed PRNigeria that capturing
such recordings was another major feat in the battle

captured by the troops are currently being analysed by
military experts. Some of the videos included recording of scenes of trials,
beheadings, executions, stoning, floggings and those taken
during preparations for suicide attacks. A military source informed PRNigeria that capturing such
recordings was another major feat in the battle against
insurgency as it was a tool used to really terrify mostly civilian

release through their normal channels to the public before
they were dislodged from their camps. They also show the
barbaric life in their so-called caliphate

troops have liberated about 1,000 women and children from
the various terrorists camps already dismantled. There have been tales of woes and great distress from many
of those rescued from the terrorists about their reign of
terror and lately of despondency within the ranks of the
insurgents. When contacted on the discovery of video recordings, the

said “A number of vital materials, apart from arms and
ammunition, have been recovered which are being subjected
to intelligent analyses. We don’t want to say much about that

Christianity EtcIs It A Sin To Skip Sunday Masses For Catholics by Chidave20(op): 8:02am On Apr 27, 2015
,.... if u are a true catholic,I guess u r under obligation to hear mass on Sunday.... CANON LAW OF THE CHURCH WITH ITS SECTIONS 2180. The precept of the Church specifies the law of the Lord more precisely: "On Sundays and other holy days of obligation the faithful are bound to participate in the Mass. "The precept of participating in the Mass is satisfied by assistance at a Mass which is celebrated anywhere in
a Catholic rite either on the holy day or on the evening of the preceding day." 2181.... The Sunday Eucharist is the foundation and confirmation of all Christian practice. For this reason the faithful are obliged to participate in
the Eucharist on days of obligation, unless excused for a serious reason
(for example, illness, the care of infants) or dispensed by their own pastor. Those who deliberately fail in this obligation commit a grave sin. 2182 ... Participation in the communal celebration of the Sunday Eucharist is a testimony of belonging and of being faithful to Christ and to his Church.
The faithful give witness by this to their communion in faith and charity.
Together they testify to God's holiness and their hope of salvation. They
strengthen one another under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. 2183 "If because of lack of a SACRED MINISTER or for other GRAVE CAUSE participation in the celebration of the Eucharist is impossible, it is
specially recommended that the faithful take part in the Liturgy of the
Word if it is celebrated in the parish church or in another sacred place
according to the prescriptions of the diocesan bishop, or engage in prayer
for an appropriate amount of time personally or in a family or, as occasion offers, in groups of families. A day of grace and rest from work.
PoliticsBREAKING NEWS Plot To Abduct INEC Chairman Revealed by Chidave20(op): 6:27pm On Apr 16, 2015
saharaReporters has learned of a plot to abduct
Independent National Election Commission (INEC)
Chairman Attahiru Jega by Peoples Democratic Party
(PDP) agents during the presidential election in March. The intent was to derail the vote tabulation when it was clear
that the PDP could lose the election to the All Progressives
Congress (APC). The plotters are said to have included former Minister of
State for the Niger Delta, Godsay Orubebe, and members of
Chairman Jega’s state-sponsored security detail. Chairman
Jega was supposed to be abducted after Godsay Orubebe
disrupted the public tabulation by Chairman Jega and
Resident Election Commissioners (RECs). It will be recalled that Mr. Orubebe subjected the Nigerian
public and entire Election Commission to a lengthy diatribe,
claiming that Chairman Jega was giving the APC preferential
treatment and biased. SaharaReporters is confirming details, but it is believed that
Chairman Jega was going to be abducted by agents working
for the PDP had he taken a recess from Mr. Orubebe’s
disturbance. SaharaReporters will provide the latest updates, once the
details of the plot are confirmed. #www.saharareporters.com/2015/04/16/breaking-plot-abduct-inec-chairman-jega-during-election-revealed

Christianity EtcGood Friday, how The Church Celebrates It. by Chidave20(op): 6:13am On Apr 03, 2015
On Good Friday, the entire Church fixes her gaze on the Cross at
Calvary. Each member of the Church tries to understand at what cost
Christ has won our redemption. In the solemn ceremonies of Good
Friday, in the Adoration of the Cross, in the chanting of the
'Reproaches', in the reading of the Passion, and in receiving the pre-
consecrated Host, we unite ourselves to our Savior, and we contemplate our own death to sin in the Death of our Lord. The Church - stripped of its ornaments, the altar bare, and with the door
of the empty tabernacle standing open - is as if in mourning. In the
fourth century the Apostolic Constitutions described this day as a 'day
of mourning, not a day of festive joy,' and this day was called the
'Pasch (passage) of the Crucifixion.' The liturgical observance of this day of Christ's suffering, crucifixion
and death evidently has been in existence from the earliest days of the
Church. No Mass is celebrated on this day, but the service of Good
Friday is called the Mass of the Presanctified because Communion (in
the species of bread) which had already been consecrated on Holy
Thursday is given to the people . Traditionally, the organ is silent from Holy Thursday until the Alleluia
at the Easter Vigil , as are all bells or other instruments, the only
music during this period being unaccompanied chant. The omission of the prayer of consecration deepens our sense of loss
because Mass throughout the year reminds us of the Lord's triumph
over death, the source of our joy and blessing. The desolate quality of
the rites of this day reminds us of Christ's humiliation and suffering
during his Passion. We can see that the parts of the Good Friday
service correspond to the divisions of Mass: Liturgy of the Word - reading of the Passion. Intercessory prayers for the Church and the entire world, Christian and
non-Christian. Veneration of the Cross Communion, or the 'Mass of the Pre-Sanctified.' The Veneration of the Cross In the seventh century, the Church in Rome adopted the practice of
Adoration of the Cross from the Church in Jerusalem, where a fragment
of wood believed to be the Lord's cross had been venerated every year
on Good Friday since the fourth century. According to tradition, a part
of the Holy Cross was discovered by the mother of the emperor
Constantine, St. Helen, on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem in 326. A fifth century account describes this service in Jerusalem. A coffer of gold-
plated silver containing the wood of the cross was brought forward. The
bishop placed the relic on the a table in the chapel of the Crucifixion
and the faithful approached it, touching brow and eyes and lips to the
wood as the priest said (as every priest has done ever since): 'Behold,
the Wood of the Cross.' Adoration or veneration of an image or representation of Christ's cross
does not mean that we are actually adoring the material image, of
course, but rather what it represents. In kneeling before the crucifix and
kissing it we are paying the highest honor to the our Lord's cross as the
instrument of our salvation. Because the Cross is inseparable from His
sacrifice, in reverencing His Cross we are, in effect, adoring Christ. Thus we affirm: 'We adore Thee, O Christ, and we bless Thee because
by Thy Holy Cross Thou has Redeemed the World.' The Reproaches and the Reading of the Passion The Reproaches (Improperia), are often chanted by a priest during the
Good Friday service as the people are venerating the Cross. In this
haunting and poignant poem-like chant of very ancient origin, Christ
himself 'reproaches' us, making us more deeply aware of how our
sinfulness and hardness of heart caused such agony for our sinless and
loving Savior. A modern translation of the some of the Reproaches, originally in Latin follows: My people, What have I done to you? How have I offended you?
Answer me!
I led you out of Egypt; but you led your Savior to the Cross.
For forty years I led you safely through the desert,
I fed you with manna from heaven,
and brought you to the land of plenty; But you led your Savior to the Cross.
O, My people! What have I done to you that you should testify against
me? Holy God. Holy God. Holy Mighty One. Holy Immortal One, have
mercy on us. Three times during Holy Week the Passion is read - on Passion Sunday,
Holy Thursday, and Good Friday. By very ancient tradition, three
clergy read the three principal parts from the sanctuary: Jesus (always
read by a priest), Narrator, and all the other individual parts. The
people also have a role in this - we are those who condemn the Lord to
death. Hearing our own voices say 'Away with Him! Crucify him!' heightens our consciousness of our complicity by our personal
sinfulness in causing His death.

celebrated the Passover with His disciples, known as the
Last Supper. Two important events are the focus of
Maundy Thursday. First, Jesus celebrated the Last Supper with His disciples
and thereby instituted the Lord’s Supper, also called
Communion (Luke 22:19-20). Some Christian churches observe a special Communion service on Maundy
Thursday in memory of Jesus’ Last Supper with His
disciples. Second, Jesus washed the disciples’ feet as an
act of humility and service, thereby setting an example
that we should love and serve one another in humility
(John 13:3-17). Some Christian churches observe a foot- washing ceremony on Maundy Thursday to commemorate
Jesus’ washing the feet of the disciples. The word Maundy is derived from the Latin word for “command.” The “Maundy” in “Maundy Thursday” refers
to the command Jesus gave to the disciples at the Last
Supper, that they should love and serve one another.
Should we observe Maundy Thursday? The Bible neither
commands nor forbids it. It is a good thing to remember
the Last Supper and Jesus’ sacrifice on our behalf. It is a good thing to remember the Lord’s example of humility.
However, at the same time, we should avoid ritualistic
observances of holidays unless they are truly focused on
God and our relationship with Him. Observing a special Lord's Supper service on Maundy
Thursday/Holy Thursday in remembrance of the Last Supper is a good thing to do. Doing a foot-washing in remembrance of how Christ humbled Himself and
washed the feet of the disciples is a powerful reminder
of how we are to live the Christian life (Philippians 2:1-11). Let's just make sure we are observing Maundy Thursday in a way that truly honors what happened at
the Last Supper.
