Nairaland / General / I Arrested Buhari During The 1985 Coup – Col Aminu (rtd) by chiddy158: 12:50am On Aug 10, 2015
A one- time military administrator of Borno state and retired colonel of the Nigerian Army, Abdulmumini Aminu has revealed that he was the officer that arrested the then Head of State, and current President, Muhammadu Buhari, during the August 27, 1985 military coup that toppled Buhari’s regime.

He however stated that contrary to claims, he never handcuffed or manhandled Buhari during the arrest.

Colonel Aminu (Rtd) made the revelation in an interview with Daily Trust on Sunday.

He said contrary to wide held notion that Sambo Dasuki arrested Muhammadu Buhari, he was the one who led a team of three Army officers to arrest Buhari.

There have been speculations that Mr. Buhari was arrested by the Immediate past National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, during the coup that saw the emergence of Ibrahim Babangida as military president.

“I must confess that I led that operation. I went to Dodan Barracks that time in company of two other officers – then Major John Madaki and Lawan Gwadabe. Three of us went, but specifically I was the one that went upstairs to bring Buhari,

“With due respect, I have been reading in the papers and listening to radio, people saying that we manhandled him, we disrespected him. That was not true. I and General Buhari are the only two who knew what transpired upstairs and there was nothing like that.

“We gave him his absolute respect as a superior, because even before that time, we had absolute respect for him, because of whom and what he was. We respect him a lot till today and there is no animosity between us and he knew it was a military assignment that we were carrying out from our superior. He even told me at one time.

“So for us, it is just like the other way round of when he came to power during the anti-Shagari coup. I was among those who played a major role in getting him to power. So, he knew the role I played. And even Buhari knew in 2003, I was arrested because of him. That time, I supported him. I worked for him at that time, without even him knowing anyway, but he later knew. You see, once you believe in somebody and you know he has the capability, you can do anything for him without even him knowing,

“It is a blatant lie. In an operation of that nature, we don’t carry handcuffs,” he said

He however, admitted that he did not salute the then Head of State at the time because the flag had been lowered.

“I did not salute him because according to military tradition and norms when the flag is lowered, you can only pay compliments the way you deem fit, not salutation.

“We met at 2 a.m. and at that time, we don’t salute because the flag is down, until 6 am again when the flag is up. To insinuate that he was handcuffed, that is far from the truth. We only accorded him all the respects he deserved. I still hold him in very high esteem,” he said.

Muhammadu Buhari was overthrown in August 27, 1985 in a military coup d’état led by Gen, Ibrahim Babangida (rtd).

Nairaland / General / El Rufia Embarks On Demolition Despite Electoral Promises by chiddy158: 2:01pm On Aug 08, 2015
Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, on Wednesday began the demolition of illegal structures in the state contrary to his electoral promise to the people of Kaduna

El-Ruria, during his governorship campaign promised the people of Kaduna State that he will not demolish any community in the state as being speculated or championed by his opponents, if elected their governor

But two months after taking oath of office, the Governor in a town hall meeting in Zaria, announced that any illegal building erected in carved out areas would be demolished.

According to him, such illegal structures on lands belonging to public institution would be demolished

On Wednesday 5th, August, El-Rufia began the demolition of houses and business premises in Kaduna and Zaria

Defending his action, the governor said the operation is not the same as a “demolition exercise “but recovery of government lands

The governor Speaking through his Spokesman, Samuel Aruwan, in a statement said “It has become important to let the public know that what we embarking tomorrow (today) is not the same as demolition. What we are doing is the recovery of lands belonging to schools, hospitals, Libraries etc which some powerful people have carved out and allocated to themselves.

“We are doing this because no one has any right to infringe on such lands for his private use to the detriment of the future plans of such institutions.

Some prominent indigenes of Kaduna are kicking against the actions of the governor, notable among them is the Senator representing Kaduna Central Senatorial District, Shehu Sani.

Mr. Sani accused the governor of introducing unpopular policies and also running a government that does not consider the interest of the people of the state.

He said that he never intended to be in discord with the present Kaduna administration, but Governor El-Rufai’s policies are harsh, inconsiderate and anti-people.

“He has to take consideration of the fact that he met people that were impoverished, that were muscled, harassed and demoralized by the government of the PDP. So, first of all, they don’t need harsh policies that will further impoverish and alienate them. We need to carry them along, taking cognisance of the situation which we find them in. I fundamentally differ with him on that issue. For that reason, he has decided on his own not to even appoint people who identify with me in anyway and who are also seen to be from my camp.” Sani said.

As Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, under the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, El-Rufai embarked on massive destruction of buildings, which he declared as illegal structures

Nairaland / General / Revealed: How Fashola Budgeted N78 Million For Upgrade Of Website by chiddy158: 1:54pm On Aug 08, 2015
Facts are beginning to emerge on how the immediate past governor of Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola mismanaged the resources of the state.

Fashola, who was a governor for eight year, executed a lot of laudable projects for the state. He achieved a lot in Infrastructural development, Education and Security. But some shocking details of his financial dealings and contract awards are begging for some answers.

Investigation by TheFocus revealed that in 2014, the Lagos State Government under Governor Babatunde Fashola, awarded a contract of N 78,300,000.00 to Info Access Plus Limited for upgrade of a personal website of the governor.

The contract was awarded by the office of Chief of staff to the governor

According to the 2014 budget report on the website of the Lagos State Public Procurement Agency, The website – www.tundefashola.com is meant to be used by the governor after May 29, 2015 hand-over.

Our investigation revealed that the cost of such website should not be more than N 300,000.

It is therefore surprising that Fashola will award the contract for the upgrade of his personal website with tax payers money at the cost of N 78,300,000.00

Similar fact emerged this week when a civil society group, Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders (CACOL) petitioned President President Muhammadu Buhari, urging him not to consider Fashola for any appointment.

The group in their petition alleged that the former governor awarded a 1.36km Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge at the cost of N25bn. But the cost of constructing the bridge was actually N6bn.

Some of these finding are pointing to the reason why the former governor left the state in a very bad financial state.

It will be recalled that Fashola handed a debt profile of N418billion to the new administration of Akinwunmi Ambode

Nairaland / General / Exposed: How Oil Marketers Tried To Sabotage Jonathan And Intimidate Buhari by chiddy158: 10:48pm On May 29, 2015
The current fuel crises has revealed the plan of a few oil marketers to sabotage government activities and plunge the nation into crises.

It will be recalled that some oil marketers embarked on an industrial action, to force government to pay outstanding interests on subsidy funds for fuel imported into the country .

Oil marketers have been at loggerhead with the Minister of Finance over unpaid subsidy claim. The oil marketers had insisted that the government should liquidate the remaining subsidy balance of N200.2bn; the government had earlier released N154.2bn to settle a part of the subsidy arrears owed marketers.

The marketers had insisted that they are giving the government an ultimatum of two weeks to liquidate the remaining N200Billion balance

On Saturday 16th May 2015, an SMS ordering the suspension of loading activities in all depots from Monday 18th May 2015 was sent to major player in the downstream sectors of the petroleum industry . The SMS was sent from an unknown and unconfirmed source. The SMS succeeded in crippling activities in the oil sector as all major Players; National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), Depot & Petroleum Products Marketers Association (DAPPMA), Major Oil Marketers Association(MOMAN), and Petroleum Tanker Drivers(PTD) arm of Nigeria Union of Petroleum & Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG ) immediately embarked on an industrial action against the laid down procedure of embarking on a strike.

The strike succeeded in crippling socio-economic activities throughout the country . Transportation, banking, healthcare and telecommunication systems were almost grounded. Government could not get the striking parties to call off their strike, until Capital Oil and Gas industries Limited broke rank and came to the rescue of Nigerians.

To save the collapsing economy, Capital Oil and Gas Industries Limited announced that It has pulled out of the oil marketers’ strike and will commence the loading of 13 Million litres of petrol from its depot in Apapa for distribution to the various states to reduce the scarcity and ease the situation across the country.

Giving the reason for his intervention, the Managing Director of Capital Oil and Gas Industries Limited, Dr. Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah, said he was opening his depot for petrol lifting to commence because he wanted national interest to prevail. Ifeanyi Ubah, told journalists in Lagos that more than 2,000 trucks would be loaded before May 29 to boost the country’s economic activities.

He said that the company’s facilities had the capacity to load 13 Million litres of the product within the period.

“This comes to approximately 500 trucks of petroleum products on daily basis. With this, it is our belief that once again our citizens will begin to smile and return to normal family and work life”.

“We call on other petroleum marketers to follow suit and save our nation from this impending economic and social crisis,’’ he said.

While faulting the strike, he said his company on May 16 received a message ordering the suspension of loading activities in all depots from May 18.

He said his company realised that the directive was the result of funds owed to transporters by oil marketers who in turn are owed by the Federal Government.

Ubah said that the development resulted in immense hardship for Nigerians. He noted that since then, Nigerians have suffered immense hardship, with petrol selling at an all-time high of between N500 and N1000 per litre depending on location and outlet.

“Its hardship on Nigerians and I don’t think that at this point in time our organisation should be part of any sabotage against the incoming government,” he said

Ubah described the current crisis as sabotage, saying: “We are constrained at this point and have decided that two wrongs cannot make a right. We will not be part of this sabotage against our fatherland. Therefore, from this minute, we shall take the risk of opening our facilities and commence swift loading and distribution of products nationwide.”

He also gave assurance that once the current stock is exhausted, there are vessels laden with petroleum products at the jetty waiting to berth.

He added that the situation called for patriotism and service, which was why Capital Oil truck park, port and depot reception facilities were opened and loading of products commenced for distribution to every state of the federation.

The action of Capital Oil broke the ranks of oil marketers and depot operators, who had refused to import any more products until their outstanding subsidy claims of over N200 billion is paid by the Federal Government.

The marketers became jittery over the development for fear of being labeled saboteurs, seeing they have enough fuel stock in their depots but have refused to dispense them, even as they are losing billions of Naira daily.

This forced them to speedily meet with the Minister for the Economy and Finance Minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and Chairman of senate committee on Petroleum Resources (Downstream), Magnus Abe, alongside his colleague in the Upstream Committee, senator Paulker Emmanuel to negotiate a soft landing.

The Abuja meeting resolved, among others, that oil marketers and depot owners, including the NNPC must commence lifting petroleum products immediately and that depot owners must work round the clock for the next two weeks until normalcy returns across the country

But our investigation revealed the real motive of the cabal behind the strike. It has been authoritatively confirmed the strike was initiated and executed by a cabal among the marketers who wants to sabotage government activities and plunge the nation into crises. It was revealed that none of the leadership or member of the unions and associations that participated in the strike actually met to decide on the strike.

Collaborating the findings, the Managing Director of Capital Oil and Gas Limited, Ifeanyi Ubah, while speaking on Channels Television’s breakfast programme on Tuesday said that his opinion was not sought in the decision to shut down the entire system.

He wondered why his company, which controls about 35% of the distribution capacity in the downstream sector of the Nigerian oil and gas sector, would be following directives from persons who probably do not have as much stake as he has in the industry.

“We don’t need to follow the same people who don’t have this kind of facility. We need to ask, who are these people we are talking about, what is their investment capacity? What is their storage capacity? What is their investment in this industry?

“And you want us every time to follow the queue of strike,” Mr Ubah queried.

He said that it was unprecedented in the country for oil marketers to go on strike for up to four days and what he expected was there to have been a warning strike before a total shut down. According to him “You don’t cage government because after God is government”.

Depot and Petroleum Product Marketers Association (DAPPMA) also denied ever embarking on any shut down of their depots and facilities. The Executive Secretary of DAPPMA, Mr Olufemi Adewole said in a statement that it was the Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) arm of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and National Gas workers(NUPENG) that embarked on the strike.

But the National president of NUPENG Chief Igwe Achese, denied ever instructing his union or any arm of his union to embark on the strike. He stated that he was actually out of the country when the purported strike started. He also denied ever attention the meeting in Abuja where the resolution to call off the strike was taken.

Speaking on AIT current affairs program, Focus Nigeria, Capital Oil and Gas boss, Ifeanyi Ubah confirmed that the strike was the handiwork of a cabal among the oil marketer. He asked security operatives and Nigerians to investigate and prosecute those behind the strike.

He also call for a total removal of the fuel subsidy regimen. He said it is only when subsidy is removed that the downstream sector of Nigerian oil and gas sector can witness significant investment and turn-around.

He said Nigerians will benefit more from total deregulation of the sector.

Nairaland / General / Truvada, A New Drug To Prevent HIV Approved by chiddy158: 4:20am On Mar 02, 2015
A newly approved drug to prevent HIV infection is creating hope for inroads in the global fight against AIDS, though questions about its cost, access and appropriate uses remain.

In July 2014, the United States Food and Drug Administration approved a drug known as Truvada — the brand name for the medication emtricitabine/tenofovir disoproxil fumarate — for daily use as a pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP, “in combination with safer sex practices to reduce the risk of sexually acquired HIV infection in adults at high risk,” according to an FDA statement. While the drug is not suitable for everyone, likely candidates include members of so-called “discordant” couples in which one person is HIV-positive.

“I’m optimistic that for some people it could be very beneficial,” APHA member Ken Mayer, MD, medical director at Fenway Health in Boston and visiting professor at Harvard Medical School, told The Nation’s Health. “I don’t think of PrEP as a panacea. It’s part of a package of approaches.”

While FDA’s approval of Truvuda as a pre-exposure tool is new, the drug itself is not. In 2004, the agency approved Truvada in combination with other drugs as an antiviral to treat those already infected with HIV.

Before the drug’s latest approval, two large clinical trials looked at medication safety and effectiveness in HIV prevention. In one study, Truvada was 42 percent effective in reducing the risk of HIV infection among HIV-negative men or transgender women who have sex with men who were determined to have high risk for HIV infection. In a study of heterosexual couples, use of Truvada reduced the risk of HIV infection by 75 percent. FDA officials said the eight-year lag between Truvada approval to treat HIV-positive people and approval as a prevention tool for those who are HIV negative was due to the need for clinical studies.

The drug carries side effects, and some studies have shown the medication could be linked to kidney and bone problems. Price is also an issue, as the drug may cost as much as $10,000–$13,000 a year.

Religion / Pastor Swindles Members Of Millions Of Naira, Explains Why He Watches Porn by chiddy158: 3:02pm On Feb 12, 2015
The State Criminal Investigation Department of the Lagos State Police Command has arrested a man known as Pastor Chibuzor Nnaegbo for fraud.

Speaking after his arrest, Pastor Chibuzor confessed that his victims believed he was in Israel trying to open a church so they donated millions of Naira to his ministry. He however said he gave out most of the money he collected to other churches, including Pastor EA Adeboye’s Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) and Bishop David Oyedepo’s Winners Chapel, as ‘seed’.

“My problem started while I was pastoring a church in Onitsha; I read a book written by Bishop Oyedepo on how to sow seed. After reading the book I sold all the church properties and sowed the proceeds in another church.

“When I relocated to Lagos, I started collecting money from people, deceiving them that I am in Israel. I told them that I had issues trying to set up a church and needed money to grow the ministry.

“I used all the money I collected from them to sow seed in Redemption camp. I collected N1.9 million from one of the victims, N1.255 million from another, N2.5 million from the third and N900,000 and a Toyota Camry from the fourth victim. I sowed the Camry as seed in Winners Chapel in Otta.

“I was arrested through my younger brother who I sent to collect money from one of the victims, unknown to me that he had discovered that he was being defrauded and had reported to Ilemba Divisional Police, and they arrested me.

“Concerning the porn videos that were found in my phone, I watch the pornography videos on my phone whenever I have sexual urge because I don’t have sexual intercourse with women,” he said.

Nairaland / General / Why My Regime Executed Drug Peddlers, Jailed Journalists – Buhari by chiddy158: 4:51am On Feb 09, 2015
The presidential candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC) , General Muhammadu Buhari (Rtd) on Sunday defended some of the most controversial actions of his regime and accepted responsibility for them.

Gen. Buhari, who was a former Nigeria Military leader said that his military regime took those actions to clean up the country and restore dignity to the citizenry.

The Buhari junta, which was in power between 31 December 1983 and 27 August 1985, attracted criticisms for executing drug convicts with retroactive laws and for jailing journalists under a decree that made it an offence to publish a report that could embarrass the government, whether true or false.

The military regime executed Bernard Ogedegbe (29), Bathlomew Owoh (26) and Lawal Ojuolape (30) for dealing in drugs. The case of Owoh drew particular global attention because at the time the offence was committed, the maximum punishment in the country’s legal code was six months imprisonment. The Buhari government enacted a Decree 20, which had a retroactive effect and carried the death penalty.

Also, under Decree No. 4 of 1984, the Buhari military government jailed two reporters, Tunde Thompson and Nduka Irabor for publishing reports that it considered embarrassing to government officials.

In an interview with Al Jazeera television, Buhari was asked to respond to accusation of cracking down on civil rights, Journalists and of executing people who had not committed capital offences. Buhari responded

"We said we suspended parts of the constitution and we made laws before we sent people on trial. So, we accept responsibility for whatever opinion and whoever is expressing it. The question of executing people was about people dealing in drugs. We said cocaine and associated drugs were not developed or produced in Nigeria. People who want to make money at the expense of health, lives of people go to the countries that produce these substances and make Nigeria a transit camp for drugs, destroying Nigerian communities and extend the destruction even to developed countries just to make money. We were concerned that if people want to make money, they should go out and work hard and make money, not to go and bring drugs, sell it and destroy our youth, sell it and destroy other countries just to make money. We made the law, that whoever did it should be executed. Let him go and make the money elsewhere, not in Nigeria. The second accusation that you made on the trampling on human rights is about the Nigerian Press. We said we cannot stop the press from criticizing people or institutions. But please, let them have investigative journalism. Let them try and verify facts before they accuse government of offence and others of misdemeanor to spoil their names and reputations. We never held any secret tribunal. The tribunals, six of them throughout the country, we got the intelligence community, Navy, Army, Air Force, Police, national security organisations, to form the investigative panel that based on documentation, people were charged, military tribunals, they were tried. There was nothing secret about it.

Reacting to a question why some figures in Nigeria like Wole Soyinka, former President Olusegun Obasanjo and former President Ibrahim Babangida has not come out come out to endorse him as the right man and the perfect man to be the President of Nigeria, Buhari said;

"If people don’t like Buhari’s face for what he did as a military Head of State, let them join either the ruling party or any of the mushroom parties and vote against me and persuade their constituencies to vote against me. It is as simple as that. I keep maintaining that Nigerians will be amazed how physically Nigeria can be secured if people are allowed to choose whoever they want to represent them as members of legislature, as Governors and as President. We will be amazed".

Similarly , in a separate meeting between the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Attahiru Jega, and the nation’s resident electoral commissioners(REC), The resident commissioners have agreed to support the poll shift on two conditions. Firstly that Mr. Jega must extract commitment from the Presidency and security agencies that further extension would not be required after six weeks.

“RECs need a guarantee that there will not be further postponement after the six weeks the military are demanding,” our source said.

He also said the second condition was that the commission should be allowed to decide how long the postponement should last.

“The feeling is that outside forces, especially the security agencies, should not be the ones to decide how long to shift the elections. That should be solely decided by INEC,” he said.

To this end, it was agreed that Mr. Jega should consult with the presidency and security agencies, after which another meeting will hold by 8pm.

“The Chairman will then brief the RECs on the outcome of his consultations,” our said.

INEC has all day been holding consultative meetings with political parties, civil society organisations and the RECs with a view to taking decision on whether to postpone the general elections scheduled for February 14 and 28 or not.

INEC reached the decision to postpone the 2015 General Elections at a stakeholders meeting held today, February 7, in Abuja.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has decided to postpone the 2015 General Elections.

INEC reached the decision at a stakeholders meeting held today, February 7, in Abuja.

An official close to the commission confirmed that INEC had decided to postpone the election for six weeks due to the threat posed by Boko Haram.

The source added that the poll shift would allow extra time for a newly constituted multinational force to secure the North-East which is currently being plagued by Boko Haram attacks.

It would also enable the commission continue distribution of Permanent Voters Cards (PVC) to citizens to prevent mass disenfranchisement.

INEC is expected to make an official announcement of the postponement at a news conference later in the day.
