We were very mature for independence. The problem always has been the systems of patronage that actually run through NIgeria.

The fact is , by 1920, it was evident the UK did not have the resources to keep their empire running. Already under the rule of George V, there were some reforms taking place. World War 2 completely drained the UK, (not only in money, but in men, the reason why there are so many non white people in the UK today was because the UK lost a lot of white people during the WW2...so they needed immigrants to replace lost workers.). ..thus by the 1950's it was either they gave up their colonies, or else.

The problem with democracy in Nigeria is simple. People vote for the patronage system, not for ideology and so forth. And any attempt to dislodge the patronage system and replace it with a revolutionary government....as seen on Jan 15 1966....would always end up in chaos and crisis. So the elites and the masses both conspire to keep the patronage system going. That means keeping resource dependency going instead of truly developing an industrial exporting economy, because it would make things hard for everyone.

That is why you think democracy failed. The truth is, under army rule, life was just as hard as under civillan rule too.

If we were matured enough for Independence, why do we still promote the System that doesn't work for good - after many years of freedom?
