Dr. Willie Obiano is the gubernatorial candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance. In this interview with selected journalists, he bares his mind on Anambra State and what he has in stock for the State if elected as the next Governor.Excerpts

By Charles Kumolu

HOW has the campaign been?
We are still on it and I enjoy every bit of it because, for me, it is expository. Though as a son of the soil, I had visited many parts of the State before, the campaign has afforded me the opportunity of visiting more places.

I am confident that before the election proper, I would have visited all the 177 communities in the State. If you have followed my campaign, you would have noticed that it is more of grassroots sensitization. Some people say I should buy airtime in all the electronic media, including CNN . I have watched some of those adverts and my conclusion is that what they show us is but the confirmation that they are not worthy to become lead men in any capacity not to talk of being governor of our state.

How do you mean?
Take the case of the advert where a particular candidate goes to different schools in the State. Coming to a school where three out of the maybe existing 6 buildings had been rehabilitated, he will shoot those yet to be rehabilitated and present same as the state of Anambra schools. I have personally done on the spot visits of projects going on in the State for a first hand understanding of what obtains in Anambra State. One area Gov. Peter Obi has done marvelously well in is education.

Now, the man doing selective shooting is merely showing us his deceptive character. You cannot, because you are standing for election, categorically propagate that the incumbent is doing nothing. This shows that you are inherently deceptive and will continue to deceive the people in whatever capacity you find yourself.

Do you think you are better than other candidates why?
Your question boils down to what I have been talking about. In terms of experiential pedigree, I enjoy far reaching privileges among the gubernatorial candidates. As the number two man in Fidelity Bank, I was exposed to money several times bigger than what the State has.

Having been the first man to become the internal auditor of Texaco Worldwide and the number two man in Fidelity Bank for nine years, I think I have more local and international experiences than those in the race.

Obiano

Obiano

I spent two extra years in Fidelity Bank after I was supposed to retire because the institution found my services worth keeping. In term of character, you see me campaigning with my wife.

At the risk of sounding immodest, I was brought up by a Spartan father who was a teacher and an understanding mother for whom virtue is everything. I embraced my parents’ wish for a virtuous life and today nobody can peruse through my life and say that I have been found wanting. Can other candidates say the same about themselves without being reminded of many skeletons in their pockets not even cupboards?

The candidate of Labour Party, Dr. Ifeanyi Uba was quoted …..

(Cuts in) Please, as a matter of policy, I do not discuss individuals. I have seen adverts by people in the media castigating others and even the incumbent Governor because they want to become Governor.

If you lie against one another because you want to become governor, you are telling us that you are not fit for the office. In fact, I take it as a sign of intellectual poverty when I see somebody who cannot tell us about his manifesto but who revels in heaping lies against people.

If such a man is allowed to become Governor, only God knows what the thrust of his government will be.

I have seen a particular candidate calling on Gov. Obi to account for the 3 trillion he has received as Governor. For a person at that level to peddle such falsehood smacks of supreme mischief or very poor calculations.

How can somebody say that kind of thrash when the yearly budget of the State is a matter of public knowledge?

How would you tackle the menace of insecurity?

This is one area Gov. Obi has committed a lot of resources in. Besides providing patrol vehicles to security agencies, he has also bought patrol vans for all the communities in the State.

He is equally paying towns’ vigilante groups, among other security measures. I shall devote more time and resources in intelligence. You see, our security people cannot catch armed robbers and kidnappers when they carry AK 47 all over the places.

When those armed robbers know where they are, they will not go there. I shall focus on intelligence.
With good intelligence, armed robbers will be routed in their hideouts and houses even before they embark on crime. We shall continue the policy of punishing owners of buildings used in kidnapping and we shall continue to pull down such buildings according to the laws of the State.

What message do you have for the people of the State?
It is simple. Vote for Willie Obiano and Nkem Okeke because of proven capacity to add value to the State.
Do not vote for people because they share money, for they will steal your money to recover their expenses.

Do not vote for people that will not protect our people in any part of Nigeria by supporting primitive actions such as deportation of our people. Do not vote people who did not contribute anything to the institutions where they are now or where they served in the past.

If a Senator did not pass one bill for three years at the senate, if you vote for him, he will simply continue the slumber in Government House.

Above all, vote for me, people with the fear of God and be assured of quality service and esteemed respect for the dignity of Ndi-Anambra and Ndigbo. Vote for Willie Obiano.

SLIDE waxie: it is only in ur gully eroded states that APC will not work!

In the SW, it is working and will continue to work.

We have had our shares of PDP killer party, u can have it all...
You are a dunce? Have APC changed the mud house and rusted zinc infested state capitals of yorobar land? Have they reduced the earth scotch poverty in the yorobar land which is only second to Somalia? Entire yorobar land needs to be demolished for a sane and decent society to emerge. Don't tell me Lagos, because is not yorobar, it was developed by FG, igbos and hausas with oil and gas resources from the Eastern Region.

We do not need your Islamic yorobar party APC. We have already made our choice in Dr. Obiano the technocrat.

cjrane: Ngige should have joined labor party as everyone had openly advised him and labor party had severally wooed him.

APC is a tough sell in Igboland. Let me see how Roachas will win re-election in Imo State under that party.APC contains the most extremist politicians and bigots especially open with their anti-Igbo agenda. The same group of people plotting the deportation of Igbos and appropriation of their properties in Lagos. The same people plotting the sacking of all Igbo speaking ministers over flimsy excuses and setting up congressional hearings in order to disgrace them, the same people that started Boko Haram with targeting Igbo businesses and churches in northern Nigeria, El -rufai had the guts to call Igbos flies!.

All these tribal and Islamic bigots are now running APC, how does Ngige ever hope to explain to Igbos that these sworn enemies of Ndigbo will not use him to attack their flanks from within?

Ngige even compounded his problem that he could not be trusted to be his own man by openly supporting Fashola's controversial deportation of his own Igbo people in the dead of the night. What a shame !
They will soon call for your head.. cheesy

@Chino,allow Ngige be. He will still be the Governor of our beautiful state. Join hands and cast your vote for him o.
Cast my vote to an Islamic Yorobar Party?

Lemme tell you, Ngige is a nice man, I worked with him in 2004 when I was working with my uncle who happened to be a Special Adviser to Ngige then. I used to accompany him carrying files for a briefing to Ngige then. The problem is that Ngige is in a wrong party with wrong people. I personally does not have issues with Ngige.

PoliticsDistrust In The Camp of APC As Ngige and Tinubu Falls Apart by Chino48(op):
The hope of the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Chris Ngige, to become the next governor of Anambra State may have suffered a setback as mutual suspicion has allegedly set in between him and the APC chieftains funding his campaign.

But a senior member of the APC has dismissed the report as a baseless rumour designed to cause disaffection in the party, adding that the APC does not reach any understanding with candidates before fielding the qualified ones in an election.

However, feelers from the APC camp indicated that one of the party’s leaders and major financier, Bola Tinubu, had his reservation about Ngige’s readiness to honour the pact he had with them, including the controversies the APC gubernatorial candidate was said to have put the party lately.

An APC source who pleaded anonymity at a dinner in Victoria Island, Lagos, said the party leadership had always looked at Senator Ngige with suspicion. “The man has a history of not keeping his word. He is very slippery and seems to be constantly drawn to things that will give him cheap and instant popularity at the expense of long term, carefully thought-out political stratagems,” explained the source.

He said Ngige’s record of broken promises has made it difficult for the party leadership to mobilise the support of all the APC governors to push for his victory in the coming election as most of the governors believed that Ngige was simply playing along for now and would show his real nature once he wins the election.

“That was the reason most of the APC governors did not show up at the Onitsha campaign kick-off as earlier advertised. If you recall, we had put out an advertisement claiming that the 11 APC governors would be going to Onitsha to boost the overall appeal of Ngige’s candidature to his people. But most of the governors developed cold feet, fearing that Ngige would not make a loyal candidate as he would assert himself sooner than later,” the source further revealed.

The source pointed at the sudden withdrawal of support by Senator Annie Okonkwo, who had earlier accepted to serve as the Chairman of Ngige’s Campaign Committee as one of the reasons that made the APC governors withdraw their support for Ngige.

Also fingered as one of the reasons the APC leadership is turning its back on Ngige are the accusations and vicious media attacks on for Lagos State governor, Senator Bola Tinubu and Adams Oshiomhole, who have been blamed by many Igbos for partaking in Ngige’s campaign kick-off on a day the Ofala festival was taking place in Onitsha.

“Our leaders are not happy that their participation in the Onitsha rally has cast them in the mould of anti-Igbos. They blame Ngige for not paying enough attention to details while planning his activities. They consider the Onitsha rally a mistake that should have been avoided.”

“As things stand now, I’m not sure that he will receive more funds from the party once he exhausts the last slush of funds that was released to his campaign committee,” the source revealed.

Dismissing the allegations as a sheer figment of the imagination of the sponsor, the APC chieftain, who pleaded anonymity said there was perfect understanding between the party’s leaders and Ngige and that they have absolute confidence in his ability to change Anambra State for the better.

“We are not bothered because more of such would still come as election draws close. But it is an indication that the opposition has hit the panic button and as such, resorted to filthy politics in the bid to stay afloat. They can do as much of that, it certainly won’t take them anywhere,” he said.
