PhonesXiaomi's Foldable Mi Mix Fold Brings The First Liquid Lens With 3x Magnification by chrislld(op): 2:09pm On Mar 31, 2021
Xiaomi’s cutting edge Mix series is back with the Mi Mix Fold – the company’s first foldable phone that is packed with innovative features. So much so that the folding display may not even be the most interesting component on the phone.

The large internal screen is an 8.01” OLED panel with 4:3 aspect ratio (1440p+ resolution). It’s a tablet-sized display and Xiaomi claims it is the largest display on a foldable smartphone, although Huawei may disagree with this.

Still, it’s large enough that Xiaomi enabled a desktop mode with multiple resizable windows. This mode is launched with a simple three-finger swipe.

Anyway, Xiaomi developed a U-shaped hinge that is 27% lighter than the hinges used by other foldables. The phone was put through 200,000 bends during reliability testing then pushed further to 1 million bends.

The OLED panel supports HDR10+ and Dolby Vision and offers great color accuracy (DCI-P3 color space). The display is rated at 600 nits of brightness with a peak of 900 nits.

The Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold’s external display measures 6.52”, it is an AMOLED panel with 840 x 2,520 px resolution. That is a rather wide aspect ratio of 27:9. Unlike the interior display, this one has a high refresh rate – 90 Hz, plus 180 Hz touch sampling rate. Also, it is slightly brighter with 650 nits typical brightness. It supports HDR10+ and Dolby Vision, plus it has excellent color calibration as well.

Those are good stats for a first generation product, but the camera overshadows the display in terms of innovation. First off, this is the result of a CNY 140 million investment in R&grin and was in development for two years.

The Surge C1 image processing chip was developed by Xiaomi. It runs the 3A algorithms – Auto Focus, Auto Exposure and Auto White Balance – in a power efficient manner.
Even more impressive is the world’s first Liquid Lens technology in the telephoto camera. It is made out of a flexible film filled with transparent liquid. It can change its shape, just like the lens in the human eye, thanks to a precision motor. And don’t worry about the liquid – apparently, it can function in extreme temperatures ranging from -40ºC to 60ºC (-40ºF to 140ºF).The lens offers 3x optical magnification (80 mm equivalent focal length) and has an 8 MP sensor sitting behind it, but there’s no word on optical stabilization. The advantage of the liquid lens over traditional designs is the ability to focus at just 3 cm for macro shots as well as focus at distant objects for zoom shots.

The main camera has a 108MP sensor, the 1/1.52” ISOCELL HM2, which sits behind a 7P lens. The sensor supports 9-in-1 binning for 2.1 µm pixels, but this cam lacks OIS. The ultrawide-angle camera has a 123º field of view and a 13MP sensor with 1.12 µm pixels (f/2.4 lens).

The phone is equipped with a 5,020 mAh battery that is split into two 2,460 mAh cells. It supports 67W wired charging, which completes a full charge in 37 minutes (no wireless though).

The Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold is powered by the Snapdragon 888 chipset, which is hooked up to 3,200 MHz LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage. The base configuration is 12/256 GB, then there’s a 12/512 GB option and the top-specced model with 16/512 GB memory.

High performance is ensured by the “butterfly-type” cooling system, a combination of a large vapor chamber, thermal gel and multiple layers of graphite sheets. All told, the Fold boasts 22,583 mm² of total heat dissipation area. It’s not just for the chipset, the cooling system also expels heat coming from the 5G antennas and the fast charging system.

The visual spectacle of the large display is matched by the Harman Kardon tuned audio experience. It has a quad speaker setup, something reserved for tablets until now. The four 1216 super linear speakers have large “1.34 cc-equivalent” chambers. They are driven by 15V amps, which makes them 40% louder than the Mi 10 Pro speakers (which also used the 1216). Xiaomi developed a 3D spacial audio algorithm that creates an immersive experience using the four speakers.

The standard version of the phone has a Gorilla Glass back with a ceramic texture. There is also a Ceramic Special Edition, which has a black ceramic back (with laser engraving), plus gold mid-frame and volume buttons. Both versions of the Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold are going on pre-order in China later today. The first units will be available from April 16. The 12/256GB model starts at CNY10,000 ($1,520/€1,300), the next step is 12/512GB at CNY11,000 and, finally, the top end 16/512GB model for CNY13,000.

PhonesXiaomi Announces 15" Laptop With E4 OLED Display, 14" Model With 120 Hz LCD Foll by chrislld(op): 2:01pm On Mar 31, 2021
We weren’t expecting new laptops today, but Xiaomi is on a roll – so, meet the Xiaomi Mi Laptop Pro 15” and 14”.

The 15” model boasts an E4 OLED display, this is the same type of panel used in Xiaomi’s flagship smartphones. It is very bright (for a laptop screen) with 600 nits peak brightness and features DC dimming.

The 3.5K resolution of the display makes for a sharp 261 ppi pixel density, the aspect ratio is 16:10. This 10-bit panel has 100% coverage of the DCI-P3 color gamut and is calibrated before it ships (deltaE is around 1). And it borrows another thing from smartphones, Gorilla Glass protection.

The Xiaomi Mi Laptop Pro 15” is powered by an 11th generation Intel Core processors – an i5 as standard with an i7 option. In both cases there’s a GeForce MX450 GPU (2 GB VRAM). Cooling is handled by two fans. This laptop qualified for the stringent Intel Evo Platform certification.

The laptop has a 66 WHr battery that supports fast charging at 100W. On the connectivity side, there is a Thunderbolt 4 port plus two USB-C ports. Xiaomi is including a free port expander dongle in the retail package, which adds a full-size HDMI and a USB-A port.

The 15” laptop is quite slim, measuring just 15.9 mm. The chassis is made out of 6-series aircraft grade aluminum.

The Xiaomi Mi Laptop Pro 15” can be pre-ordered today, sales will begin on April 2. Pricing starts at CNY 6,500 ($990/€845) for the i5 powered model with 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB SSD. The i7 version is CNY 8,000 and comes with the same memory configuration.

Xiaomi also created an AMD-powered version of the 15” laptop with a Ryzen 5000H (45W) processor. This one is coming in May.

If you want something more portable, there’s the Xiaomi Mi Laptop Pro 14”. It’s slimmer and lighter at 15.6 mm and 1.5 kg, respectively. Its chassis is similarly made out of 6-series aluminum.

The display switches to a 120 Hz LCD with 2.5K resolution, also 16:10 aspect ratio. Color accuracy is still on the level with a deltaE of 1.5, but there’s no HDR here.

This model also gets a Core i5 or i7 11th gen processor plus GeForce MX450 GPU. Its 56 WHr battery charges at 100W. There is only one port, Thunderbolt 4, so you’ll really need that port expander. Both laptops have Wi-Fi 6 connectivity.

The Xiaomi Mi Laptop Pro 14” will start at CNY 5,300 ($805/€690). This is for a Core i5 with 16/512 GB memory. A Core i7 with the same memory will set you back CNY 7,000. Pre-orders will kick off in late April (from the 26th) and sales will begin on May 1.

Science/TechnologyVivo S7t Phone With Mediatek Dimensity 820 Soc Tipped To Launch Soon by chrislld(op): 7:20pm On Jan 26, 2021
Vivo S7t is likely to launch as a new smartphone in the company's portfolio. A fresh leak suggests that the phone may arrive in the Chinese market soon. Judging by the name, the Vivo S7t looks to be an off-shoot of the Vivo S7 that was launched in August last year. The Vivo S7t is speculated to largely have the same specifications as the Vivo S7, barring a few differences. The phone is expected to be powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 820 SoC whereas the Vivo S7 comes with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G SoC.

Tipster Digital Chat Station (translated) has claimed on Chinese microblogging site Weibo that the Vivo S7t could launch soon. The tipster doesn't offer exact details on when the smartphone may launch, but the leak suggests that it will come with the model number PD2080. Apart from the Vivo S7, the range also has a Vivo S7e 5G model. Vivo has not announced any plans to expand the series yet.

The tipster suggests that the only difference between the Vivo S7t and the Vivo S7 may be the processor. As mentioned, the rumoured Vivo S7t may be powered by the Dimensity 820 SoC instead of the Snapdragon 765 SoC found on the Vivo S7.

If all the other specifications were to remain the same, we can expect the Vivo S7t to feature a 6.44-inch (1080x2400 pixels) AMOLED display. There may be a triple camera setup at the back with a 64-megapixel GW1 sensor, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle sensor, and a 2-megapixel monochrome sensor. The phone is expected to have a dual selfie camera inside a pill-shaped cut-out on the display that includes a 44-megapixel primary camera and an 8-megapixel secondary sensor. Lastly, the Vivo S7t may pack a large 4,000mAh battery with 33W fast charging support.

Science/TechnologyOneplus 9 Pro, Oneplus 9 Specifications Tipped Ahead Of Rumoured March Launch by chrislld(op): 7:08pm On Jan 26, 2021
OnePlus 9 Pro and OnePlus 9 key specifications have been tipped online. OnePlus 9 Pro may feature a 6.8-inch Quad HD+ display with a 120Hz refresh rate, while the vanilla model could sport a 6.55-inch full-HD+ display with 120Hz refresh rate as well, according to a tipster. OnePlus could launch the anticipated OnePlus 9 series as early as March. As per the tipster, both the smartphones will be backed by the Snapdragon 888 SoC.

Tipster Digital Chat Station shared the possible specifications of the flagship models of the upcoming OnePlus 9 series through a post on Weibo. OnePlus 9 Pro and OnePlus 9 could both have a 3.8mm single punch hole in the top-left corner of the screen.

OnePlus 9 Pro is expected to feature a curved display, while OnePlus 9 will likely have a flat screen. The smartphones are tipped to be relatively lightweight and weigh less than 200 grams. While the battery specifications haven't been confirmed, the tipster suggests that OnePlus 9 Pro and OnePlus 9 could pack 4,500mAh batteries each.
To recall, the OnePlus 9 Pro has previously been tipped to come with 45W wireless charging support, while the vanilla OnePlus 9 could support 30W wireless charging. Both the models are said to support reverse wireless charging, like the OnePlus 8 Pro.

OnePlus 9 is also expected to have a triple rear camera setup featuring a primary 50-megapixel ultra-vision wide-angle camera on board. Besides that, the setup will also likely include a 12-megapixel telephoto camera with autofocus and f/3.4 lens. The upcoming OnePlus phones are expected to run on Android 11.

Besides the OnePlus 9 Pro and OnePlus 9, OnePlus 9 Lite is also expected to make its debut soon. It will reportedly be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC.

Science/TechnologyXiaomi Rides Smartphone Sales To Top $100 Billion In Market Value, Reaching 2018 by chrislld(op): 1:30pm On Dec 24, 2020
Xiaomi founder Lei Jun can finally rejoice after the Chinese smartphone maker's market value swelled past the $100 billion (roughly Rs. 7,36,000 crores) mark, a figure his company fell far short of when it listed two years ago.

The firm's stock rallied as much as 9.1 percent Wednesday to a fresh record in Hong Kong, making it the 13th stock in the city's benchmark Hang Seng Index to have a market capitalization above $100 billion (roughly Rs. 7,36,000 crores). It ended the day 7.6 percent higher with a market value of HKD 802 billion (roughly Rs. 7,60,800 crores) .

Xiaomi, which generates the majority of sales from its smartphone business, originally eyed a $100 billion (roughly Rs. 7,36,000 crores) valuation for its initial public offering, people close to the deal said in May 2018. But it was only at half that level upon its debut, and shares traded below the HKD 17 (roughly Rs. 150) offering price for most of its first two years as a public company.

The stock saw its fortunes reverse in August, after it was announced that Xiaomi would be added to the Hang Seng Index. Shares have more than doubled since. Strong sales during China's “Double 12” shopping festival have helped fuel this month's 20 percent stock jump, and a proposal to boost the weighting of companies like Xiaomi in the Hang Seng Index to 8 percent from 5 percent could lead to further gains.
Xiaomi in November reported its fastest quarterly sales growth in two years, while earnings beat analysts' estimates. It remains one of the few major Chinese tech firms to enjoy strong growth abroad while also benefiting from China's adoption of 5G technology and winning domestic market share from competitor Huawei.
