THE Federal Operations Unit, FOU, Zone “A” of Nigerian Customs Service, NCS, in collaboration with National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has destroyed 58 containers of 225mg Tramadol and other dangerous and unregistered pharmaceuticals with Duty Paid Value, DPV, of N14.7 billion.

Speaking during the destruction exercise at NAFDAC dumpsite, Oke-Diya, Shagamu, Ogun State, the committee chairman, Assistant Comptroller General of Customs, Enforcement, Investigation and Inspection, ACG Aminu Dahiru, said that the destruction is in line with the Federal Government’s desire to rid the country of fake, substandard and unregistered drugs.

He stated: “The seizures of these drugs will in no small way prevent the many kinds of social vices such as kidnapping, armed robbery, banditry, and other associated crimes we are facing today. One can only imagine the effects and the harm these drugs would cause if sneaked into society.”

In her remark, Director General, NAFDAC, Prof. Moji Adeyeye, represented by Director, Registration and Regulatory Affairs Directorate, Monica Hembem Eimunjeze, condemned those who indulge in such illicit business.

She said: “This has a far-reaching implication on public health which cannot be quantified by the monetary exchange. The rational use of medicine is very critical which its abuse will bring destruction to society.”

Manchester United has appointed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as its new permanent manager after a successful spell as temporary boss.

The club legend had initially taken over until the summer, replacing Jose Mourinho in December after a series of poor results and uninspiring performances.

But with the Norwegian at the helm, United has experienced an upturn in form.
Solskjaer was unbeaten in his first 11 games in charge and his side produced a historic display to beat Paris Saint Germain in the Champions League Round of 16.
United announced the news of Solskjaer's permanent appointment on Twitter on Thursday, stating: "Ole's at the wheel."
Speaking to the Manchester United website, Solksjaer said he "felt at home at this special club."
As well as scoring 126 goals in 366 appearances for the Red Devils between 1996 and 2007, he also coached the club's reserve team until 2010.
"It was an honor to be a Manchester United player, and then to start my coaching career here," he continued.
"The last few months have been a fantastic experience and I want to thank all of the coaches, players and staff for the work we've done so far.

Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has expressed fear over emerging plot to destabilise the rescheduled presidential elections, adding that there were also plot to leave the Presidential candidate of the People Democratic Party (PDP) Atiku Abubakar, vulnerable during the election.
According to him, it was reliably gathered that the ruling party is allegedly working in connivance with the Army authorities alongside thugs and selected militants, who will be dressed in army attire and mandated to pose as real soldiers with the aim of causing mayhem in selected opposition strongholds during Saturday’s election.
In a statement signed on Thursday in Abuja, Frank said latest information which was released by a top General in the Army suggested that “a Special Masked Squad will be deployed to Adamawa with the sole purpose of ensuring that voters are intimidated and disenfranchise, while the order to hide under the guise of the unrest in the North-east will be used to blow the situation out of proportion and eventually compromise the security architecture leaving the PDP candidate vulnerable, and open for any planned attack aimed particularly on the PDP Presidential Candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu has said the postponed presidential election for Saturday may not hold.
The IPOB Leader said this on Wednesday night in a live broadcast.

Prophet T.B. Joshua has given both a message of hope and warning to Nigerians regarding the 2019 presidential elections.
President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) will slug it out with Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate on Saturday
“I want to tell you that no matter the situation, be calm; God is in control,” Joshua told congregants.
“Those who will cause trouble will see trouble and those who will cause peace will see peace,” he continued, detailing that the aftermath of the election would ‘look very fearful’.
“You will see the clouds so dark as if it’s about to rain – but suddenly the dark cloud disappears,” he figuratively depicted, saying Nigerians would have greater cause to “respect God” after the elections.
“If anything happens to this country called Nigeria, that is the end of Africa,” he asserted, explaining that Africa’s most populous nation “has a very strong bond with God”.
“If the people of Nigeria want to cause trouble, they will cause trouble for themselves but the nation of Nigeria will stand,” the cleric concluded

Tennis star Rafael Nadal and long-term girlfriend Mery Perello are set to get married later this year following the couple's recent engagement.
Nadal, who on Sunday lost out in the Australian Open final to Novak Djokovic, proposed to Perello while the couple were on holiday in Rome in May, reported Spanish magazine Hola.
The pair have been together for 14 years, with Mery -- who has a degree in business -- currently working at the Rafael Nadal Tennis Academy in Mallorca.
She was in Nadal's team box at the Australian Open, only the second time she has supported him Down Under with the couple reportedly preferring to not travel together to every tournament.
Nadal's defeat to Djokovic means the Spaniard remains second on the grand slam all-time list with 17, three behind Roger Federer.
'I can't practice'
In October, Nadal's mind was as far away from tennis as is possible.
Flash floods struck his home island of Mallorca, killing 13 people, including the cousin of one of his best friends and her young son.

Scientists in Sharjah and Abu Dhabi have found that Shisha pipes posed more serious medical problems compared to cigarettes.
Ms Ayesha Mohammed, a chemistry lecturer at the University of Sharjah and the lead author of the study, said, “Traditional medwakh and Shisha pipes have no filters.
“So toxic metals can quickly enter the lungs, causing different diseases, such as lung and oral cancers, oral infections and cardiovascular diseases.
“I will never recommend dokha (medwakh) and Shisha smoking because both don’t have filters, so trace elements can easily enter human body and cause harm compared to cigarettes and cause several cancers.”
Published in Oxford University Press’s Journal of Analytical Toxicology, the latest study looked at 13 medwakh tobacco products and three shisha products, analysing their properties to determine metal concentrations.
The levels were then compared with cigarette tobacco to establish which was more likely to pose health risks.
Levels of nickel, a known carcinogen in medwakh and shisha were found to be particularly high compared to those in cigarettes, while iron levels were found to be roughly the same.
The research was co-authored by Prof. Mohamed Al Hajjaj of the University of Sharjah; Abdus Khan of Khalifa University, Abu Dhabi; and Shabber Mohammed and Masrath Mohammed, both of Jazan University, Saudi Arabia.
Earlier this year, Ms Mohammed and several co-researchers released a study that reported much higher levels of nicotine and tar in medwakh than in cigarettes, while those in shisha levels were similar to those in cigarettes.
Dr Noordin Wadhvaniya, a respiratory medicine specialist at the Canadian Specialist Hospital in Dubai, said that people who smoke shisha would inhale 26 times the recommended limit of uranium.
“Contrary to the general belief, uranium that is inhaled will most likely damage your kidneys rather than your lungs.
“However, it does damage the respiratory tract, creates respiratory irritation and accumulation of fluid in the lungs as well,” he said.
Wadhvaniya added that with one puff, shisha smokers inhaled the same amount of smoke as they got from a whole cigarette.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Shisha smoke, also called hookah or water pipe, is a way of smoking tobacco, sometimes mixed with fruit or molasses sugar, through a bowl and hose or tube.

ANGLICAN Bishops in the country have lamented the spate of attacks by armed herdsmen in the country with a charge on President Muhammadu Buhari to declare them as a terrorist group. herdsmen The bishops also accused the Federal Government of embarking on a “selective prosecution” in its anti-corruption fight, noting that All Progressives Congress,  APC- led Federal Government was “fighting a set of people while those with corruption charges against them are treated as saints.” They made their position in a communique  by Rev. Edafe Emamezi, Bishop, Diocese of Western Izon at the end of the first session of the 4th synod of the Diocese of Western Izon (Anglican Communion) held at St. Peter’s Church Bomadi, Delta State. The clerics also tasked Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to ensure it leaves up to expectation by conducting a free, fair and credible election during the 2019 general election. They said: “Synod notes with dismay that while the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has been declared as a terrorist group and being hunted down by the security outfit along with Niger Delta militants, the killer herdsmen and their sponsors have been allowed free access to unleash terror, killing many Nigerians in the process. “Synod. therefore, calls on those concerned to balance the equation by also declaring the killer herdsmen as a terrorist group. “We also appreciate with gratitude the government’s fight against corruption but cautions that the approach in dealing with the menace should not be selective as it has been observed in some cases and also the rule of law should be followed.” Speaking further on the position of the church, Rev. Emma Okereke lamented that while Boko Haram and herdsmen have not been declared as terrorist organisations, it is sad that the government went ahead to declare IPOB and other groups in the country, which are agitating for their rights, as terrorist organisations. He said: “We expect the Federal Government to take a stand on the killings by herdsmen so that everybody will see that they are not in support of their activities because as it stands, it looks like the government is shielding the herdsmen.” Delta women threaten to boycott 2019 election over herdsmen, rickety road On the anti-corruption war of the Federal Government, Okereke said: “From what we have seen so far, it looks like it is selective. Presidential candidate of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar, never told anyone he has been issued an American visa or planning a trip to the United States of America, a top official of his campaign organisation disclosed yesterday.               The top official, who heads one of the major campaign groups for Atiku, described as unfortunate the media hype over Atiku’s ‘collection of U.S visa and planned trip’ to that country when the former vice president had not spoken to anyone about the two issues. The official, a former minister in President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration, told Mognews on condition of anonymity, that Atiku was not one who would want to celebrate the issuance of visa, something he had obtained from many countries and had been flying around the world for many decades. Gowon also said let God answer all the good prayer for Nigeria and let him do what he thinks is best for the country. Speaking to State House correspondents after the service, Prof. Osinbajo admonished Nigerians to be continually thankful to God, urging them to look to the future with hope because of God’s faithfulness. Osinbajo was joined at the service by former Head of State, Gen.  Gowon, his wife, Victoria, Deputy Governor of Nassarawa State, Silas Agara, Minister of Niger Delta, Usani Uguru Usani, among other government officials. According to him, “My message to Nigerians is that we have every cause to be extremely thankful to God. This   has been a year where God has shown his faithfulness in so many ways.” On God’s message for Nigerians for the coming months and years, he said,  “I think that what God is also telling us is that the coming month and the coming years will be even better. “Our country is going forward; our country is getting better and better; our country will prosper; our country will be a country of abundance. “All of us will enjoy the fruit of this land. Some Yahoo boys had abducted Elozino, whose death has brought their subversive activities into razor-sharp focus, November 15, and killed her three days after. While the police had three suspects in custody about 72 hours after, the alleged mastermind, a Ghanaian-based internet fraudster, slumped and died. The suspects were said to have collaborated with some private security guards engaged by DELSU and kidnapped Elozino right inside the campus. This is what makes her case sad as friends said she was not the wayward type. One of the security guards, a  suspected Yahoo boy and ritualist, arrested by the police, told Sunday Vanguard, “I was posted by my security supervisor (also in police custody) deliberately to arrange the abduction of female students for Yahoo boys.” A source said Elozino, 22, looking for accommodation in the school’s lodging facility, was contacted on phone by the security guard and that was the last time those who knew her on campus saw her last. Concerned about the rising cases of Yahoo boys and ritualists in the state, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, on November 26, gave the police marching orders to crackdown on gangsters. How police tracked suspects – PPRO Meanwhile, Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Delta State Command, DSP Andrew Animamaka, told Sunday Vanguard, last Thursday, “Before the governor came up with the order, the Command had already mounted a search for the masterminds and any person who, in any way, may have had a hand in the gruesome murder of the young Elozino Ogege.” Disclosing that the arrest of the suspects was a combination of efforts of different units of the command, he said, “The initial credit goes to the Abraka Division, which even, prior to the information getting to the Command Headquarters, Asaba, had been on the matter and the Anti-Kidnapping Task Squad then intervened and did the rest of the job. “The Elozino matter did not come to the police as death of somebody, it came as a case of missing person. The mother of the deceased reported she was missing and, quite unlike her, had not made contact; so she smelt foul play. “That is what set the Abraka Division in search of her. The police got their breakthrough in the case with the tracking of her phone to a security guard through our tracking device. As you would expect, he (security guard) was in denial of how the phone got to him and we sought to see the person he said sold the phone to him. “We got the second suspect through a search and it was denial all through, but we knew that hardened criminals do not easily own up. They will never own up until you get incontrovertible facts and do proper interrogation. “Immediately information got to the Commissioner, Muhammad Mustafa, he ordered the transfer of the case to the Anti-Kidnapping Unit and it was when the two suspects got to Asaba that they started confessing”. Aniamaka went on, “First, we found that it was not just about them. There was a mastermind, somebody known to be a fraudster, and he had just come back from Ghana where he was said to have been engaged in internet fraud. We made efforts to pick him, it was not easy, but the good thing in our favour was the promptness, speed with which we worked. “Between that Thursday and Saturday, we had most of the (alleged) perpetrators of the crime. Yes, one of them slumped, in fact, the mastermind, knowing that we had him slumped and gave up the ghost. “The second (suspected) fraudster confessed that this was not his first time as he had been involved in four previous cases. He identified a 62-year-old herbalist as the person they took the body parts to, and, when we got to him through our undercover network, he was in denial. Immediately we got information on where his home is located, we laid ambush, watched the stream of people coming in and out of his home in Warri. “Detectives bid their time, acted as if they were potential customers in targeting him until they were certain they were not going to lose him. Ab initio, he said he did not know them, but later he owned up that they had once brought human parts to him, which he destroyed. “By the time we got to Asaba, he admitted that it was only once he got human parts from them, which he threw away.  Even the alleged mastermind, who slumped and died, confirmed in the presence of the herbalist that they took body parts to him to do ritual for them.   From kidnapping to gruesome murder “The suspected mastermind owned two buildings in Abraka. The gang actually established contact with the family of Elozino and that is what made the police to have the impression, at first, that the mission was abduction. However, right now, it is a case of gruesome murder. “From their confessions, they had done their escapades earlier in Oghara. We arrested five of them, even the small girl, but we are not holding it against her because we see her as a victim used by the mastermind. The little girl is his sister making it six”. According to the PPRO, the alleged mastermind used the minor in the telephone conversation with the parents of Elozino, probably to assure the parents that all was well. “We did not get Eloziono’s remains until the early hours of last Sunday at the outskirts of Abraka, right there in one of the farms, a hidden spot that had a tree. “The anti-kidnapping team, joined by the Special Armed Robbery Squad, SARS, and others, got to where they buried her, and what was evident after the remains were exhumed was that it was not something that happened overnight. “It took some time before the police saw the manner they plucked her eyes and, while questioning the suspects, we got other harrowing tales. Even policemen were horrified at man’s inhumanity to man”. Aniamaka stated that the police had not yet linked the suspected gang to other groups. “Apparently they acted as a unit. I do not think they acted in concert with other groups, but what is obvious is that they have sold their souls to the devil.” Confession and denial The security guard, Onos, said to have arranged the kidnapping, confirmed to Sunday Vanguard that he was recruited for the purpose by his supervisor, who vehemently denied the allegation. He said, “I was contacted by Desmond (a Yahoo boy also in custody) and another to provide a female student for Yahoo rituals. Therefore, when Elozino approached me that she was looking for accommodation, I saw it as a good opportunity. I called Desmond who told me to tell her to come back the next day. “The next day, they brought a Toyota Corolla car and when Elozino came, they used something on her face, which made her unconscious. We took her to a bush where we first plucked her eyes while she was still alive. She was even crying and begging us to forgive her and let her go, but we plucked the other eye, removed her breasts and heart before she died”. Security supervisor, Uche, who denied the allegation that he was aware of the kidnaping, said, “I was not part of it, he only said that I sold phone to him, which is my connection to the case.” The second suspected fraudster, Desmond, who identified the herbalist, said he was the one they took human parts to, to make charms for them so that “when we speak to white men on phone, they will do anything we ask them to do.” The herbalist, Robinson, told Sunday Vanguard, “I am a farmer, I am not into rituals.” He denied preparing charms for the suspected Yahoo boys, but said one time that they brought something like human parts to him, he threw them away. DSP Andrew Aniamaka, PPRO, Delta Command Ritualists intensify operation As the police celebrate their swiftness in apprehending Elozino’s suspected killers, ritualists are not resting. Residents of Asaba, the state capital, woke up, last Wednesday, to behold the remains of an unidentified young girl along Asaba-Benin Expressway, near the Summit Junction, with her vital organs removed. A police patrol team later removed the corpse. An eyewitness said her killers removed her breasts and private organs. Police Commissioner Muhammad, in response to questions by newsmen, said, “Our men on patrol stumbled on a crowd of people around Summit Junction, Asaba- Benin Expressway and, on findings, discovered the corpse of a female dumped on the road with her breasts removed and other parts in her body. They took the corpse to the FMC Asaba mortuary for further investigation.” Muhammad, who had earlier paraded the four suspected killers of Ogege, stated, “ Now that the suspects have made useful statements to the police, except the one who slumped and died, the four suspects will be charged to court, including the herbalist who have been economical with revelations and been calling God.” The next day, Thursday, at Oghara, suspected killers butchered a 12-year-old at Scott Road, close to Okwemeva Junction in Ogharaefe. She was said to have screamed for help like Elozino, but residents in the area were afraid to come out. Her head was hacked off her body. A villager, Julie, said, “The incident happened at about 5.00 am, few poles away from the Council Secretariat. Only God knows where she was coming from, but people said they heard her shouting, that they should open door for her, that some persons were after her until she went quiet. When we woke, we saw this” (pointing to the corpse). University tightens security    Meanwhile, the authorities of DELSU, in partnership with the police, local vigilante and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, have embarked on moves to flush out anyone involved in internet fraud, popularly referred to as Yahoo Yahoo, from the school. The university, in a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer, Freeborn Aganbi, stated, “Management has banned the entry of exotic cars with tinted glasses, popularly used be Yahoo boys, into all campuses of the university, prohibited the entrance of non-staff and non students into the campuses after 6.00pm and restricted students to their hostels after 7.00pm. “So far, these strategies have greatly reduced the presence of suspected Yahoo boys and their related activities in Abraka town.  To this end, DELSU management is calling on students to be security conscious and to refrain from all activities and relationships that could jeopardize their safety”.
