The man may not want the gift… he might feel it’s a conflict of interest; to get your friend a job and to accept a gift is a thin line between bribery and gratitude. Maybe he should leave it at that. Read between the lines because he can’t refuse a gift outright (to not offend) but he also doesn’t need anything from your friend.

Also, some people are superstitious and don’t accept gifts from people they don’t know for whatever reasons they believe in. I would ask one last time and emphasise that I want to appreciate him and give him a Christmas gift. Don’t talk about the job… if he doesn’t accept it and tell your friend where to meet him then he doesn’t want anything so your friend has to respect that and just thank the man and move on.

I think you could get him a nice bottle of perfume rather than alcohol. Alcohol will only destroy his health. A gift should be a blessing and last for a while so that the person can remember your kindness. Also a designer perfume costs a lot so just a bottle of perfume would be enough as a gift but if you add live chicken then you have gone above and beyond to show your appreciation.

It's natural for village people temporarily residing in Lagos to return to the village to get their wives because once they get old or retired, they return to the village or their corpses are taken back to the village where they belong and know as their final resting place. We see their corpses being moved from Lagos morgues and hospitals to their villages for burial and we don’t judge them because we know that is what they want; to return to their villages.
