ABSTRACT

The Production of Bar Soap is aimed at producing a cleansing agent which is capable of removing stains or dirt in man and his environment so as to reduce the population size of pathogenic micro-organisms. Soaps are salts of fatty acids. It is obtained by treating oils and fats with a strong alkaline solution. This brings about a chemical reaction called saponification, which is the mixture of alkali with fats to form crude soap. A mixture of the strong alkali solution (caustic soda) and water was poured into a bowl containing oil which stirred continuously until saponification occurred in the mixture. Then, other necessary ingredients were added to the mixture and was stirred to ensure thorough mixing of the solution. The mixture was poured into a mould and was allowed to cool and solidify. It was removed from the mould after solidification and was cut in bars. The product served the specific function of cleansing as it can be used domestically, industrially and otherwise to proffer hygiene good health and long lasting of objects.

ABSTRACT

This research work is concerned with the time series analysis on the rate of typhoid fever cases in Abia state from 2001-2010, with Abaia state university teaching hospital Aba as a case study. This survey was carried out using time series analysis to ascertain whether there is a significant increase in the seasonal variation in the reported cases of typhoid fever. Finally, following the inferences drawn from the data collected for the survey, it was discovered that there was a strong seasonal variation in some quarter of the period under review, which can be attributed to some certain factors like raining season. Prevention and control measures were recommended for fighting/combating this problem on the rate of typhoid fever cases in our society.

1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Typhoid Fever is a world wide disease which creates a very serious public healthy problem. In many under develop countries; the word health organization (WHO) estimated that about one person out of ever hundred (100) is suffering from typhoid fever. The also identify typhoid as a serious public health problem which incidence is highest in children and young adults between 5-19 years old.

Typhoid fever is a systematic disease caused by dissemination of salmonella typhoid or salmonella paratyphoid mainly characterized by fever was called because of it’s common similarity to typhus. It was clearly defined pathologically as a unique disease of it’s own, it is a common world wide illness, transmitted by the ingestion of food or water contaminated with the faces of an infected person, which contain the bacterium salmonella enterica. The bacteria then perforate through the intestinal wall and are phagocytosed by macrophages.

According to medial dictionary (Budelka, K.G. 1971), which reveals the typhoid fever as an infection which is usually spread by contamination of food, milk or water supply with salmonella typhi (S. typhil), either directly by sewage or indirectly by flies or by faulty personal hygiene. Symptomless carries harbouring the germ in the gall bladder and excreting it in their stools are the main sources of out breaks of disease in this country. The average incubation period is 10-14 days. A progressive fedric illness marks the onset of disease which develops as the germ invades tymphoid tissues, including that of the small intestine (peyers patches) to profuse diarrhocal (pea soup) stools which may become frankly haemorrhagic, ultimate recovery usually begins at the end of the third week. A rose coloured rash may appear on the upper abdomen and back at the end of the first week.

1.2 STATE OF PROBLEM

Over the last decade, there has been alarming increase in the rate of recorded cases of typhoid fever in our various hospitals especially in Abia state. This has led to a very serious questions on the minds of the citizenry in particular and the professionals in our medical field in general. Ordinary, since typhoid fever is generally associated with a lot of symptoms such as fever headache, cough etc. these however make it a complicated disease with a very serious economic and social effect on the victims. This study seeks to find the prevalent rate of typhoid fever and suggest possible solutions in preventing it.

1.3 AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

The following are the aims and objectives of this study.

1 To estimate the trend of the disease (typhoid fever) whether it is increasing or decreasing for this period of 2001-2010.

2 To estimate the seasonal variation of the recorded cases of typhoid fever from 2001-2010.

3 To predict rate of prevalent in future.

1.4 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This project is significant in the sense that health problem imposed by typhoid fever in this part of the world makes it a serious health issue that requires adequate attention and care. This research work will be of great significance in the following ways:

Abstract

This research work, “The Impact of Billboard Advertising in the Sale of Tobacco in Nigeria, (A case study of Imo State)”. It is an outdoor stationary structured upon, which advertisement of public service announcement were posted. The main objectives of this research are to remind user to buy the product. To achieve the above stated objectives, a systematic research methodology was adopted. The researcher tries as much as possible to explore all the strategies that are used by the billboard advertising company to the selling of tobacco goods. On the course of this project, the researcher visited various consumers in Owerri in Imo State to ascertain their level of consumption and identify accordingly their problems of consumption. The situation now is encouraging; this could be attributed partially to the down fall of the tobacco production and sales in Owerri Imo State and largely to the entrepreneurs’ inability to raise funds elsewhere. The researchers hereby recommend that billboard advertising to tobacco has to continue for it is a very good decision in the right direction. The money that is usually allocated billboard advertising should be increased so that there will be certain in the consumption of tobacco goods in Owerri Imo State. Companies must also adhere strictly to the rules of billboard advertising especially where it said that advertising should be continually accepted by the consumer. Since advertising is for a target audience, it has to be attractive so that who ever that sees it will be attracted.

1.1 Background of the Study

Billboard advertising has provided the tobacco industries with a relative low cost method of advertising and was used to reach either brand audience on specific target population.

Billboard advertising has what advertising industries calls high impression rate because of its static location that makes it viewed over again by target population thereby increasing its effectiveness.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to determine the impact of supervision on management efficiency in Banking Industry with Reference to U.BA main Branch, station Road Enugu. Banking Act (1969) defined Banking as the business of receiving monies from outside sources as deposits irrespective of the payment of interest and the granting of loans and acceptance of credits or the purchase and sales of securities. To guide this research, the following research questions were formulated as these: To what extent are human and non-human resources adequate for efficient supervision in UBA station Road Enugu, Also to what extent has the bank provided against computer fraud in organization. The materials data for this topic were gotten from both primary and secondary sources. Primary data include, questionnaires and oral interviews was used to collect information from the respondents. Secondary data include journals, magazine and other relevant material. Relating to area of my investigation will be review. Extensive literature review was carried out on direct literature and indirect literature on books, journals and past works. The research instrument used in this study includes oral interview and questionnaire. The questionnaire is structural as to contain both close and open ended question. Simple table, pie-charts and percentages were used in treatment of data while chi-square was used in the research work. Based on the findings, conclusions were drawn and recommendations were also in the last chapter of this work the research therefore roof with other department the bank should employ experienced and qualified academic staff in the supervisory department. The Nigerian banking system is made up of the central bank, commercial banks, merchant banks and development banks.

In Nigeria, the banks are closely monitored and regulated by the government through its agency, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). The need for this close marking is to ensure that banks render services to their customers in a manner consistent with safe banking operations and government financial policy.

Due to the direct need to effectively and efficiently manage depositors’ fund, the task of managing is entrusted to reputable and diligent personnel. This is due to the various functions involved in the art of bank management.

The management personnel of banks usually establish internal control procedures for the effective discharge of the major functions in order to attain their corporate objectives. In doing this, special attention is always given to communication problems. The organizational structures of banks usually have a line-end-staff form so that there will be free flow of information vertically.

Similarly, the lower level management can also advise top-level management. This free flow of information will make those below the top management to be fully aware of the bank’s policy and their own individual and group responsibilities toward the bank. It also provides a basis for effective decision making. This is followed by planning which deals with mapping out strategies to implement decision. There is therefore a need to establish a follow-up mechanism so that performances can be monitored to know whether actions are going according to plan and policies. If not, then adjustments can be made. It is in the light of these factors that the management function of controlling becomes very desirable.

A good combination of the basic functions of management planning, organizing, controlling and co-ordinating leads to overall efficiency and effectiveness. In order to enhance proper management and ensure this efficiency, the bank’s management usually establishes internal control units known as the inspectorate division. This division carries out daily and periodic supervision and inspection of all operations of the bank. In the entire banking sector, the inspectorate is a household name, as it exists in all banks though under different names. The setting up of the inspectorate divisions is aimed at stopping any form of financial distress in the Nigerian banking industry as well as other undesirables to both the bankers and customers.

Despite the establishment of this division, there seems to be lapses all over, Nigerian banks are characterized by persistent liquidity, slow loan recovery rate, inefficiency, and so on.

Comparatively, most of Small Scale Businesses (SSBs) are not registered as corporate bodies but as sole proprietorship, this makes registration procedures quite simple and a bit easier than the other forms of business registration. Partly due to this phenomenon, SMEs has outnumbered all the other forms of business and could be found almost everywhere across the country. In spite of their numbers, and significance, recent studies show that 60% of the SSBs s fail within the first five years of operation Boachie- (2005).

Studies also show that it is hard for the SMEs to access finances from the financial institutions since they lack proper financial records as a requirement (William, 2008). The SMEs inability, many times to live beyond their first few months of existence has been attributed partly to lack of finance. To become successful and be able to contribute meaningfully to the Nigerian economy, SMEs must attract and secure finance all by themselves.(Amoako, 2013).

In most industries, comparability will be affected by size. Larger firms will be able to avail themselves economic and certain sophisticated quantitative management techniques that may not be practicable for small ones. However, many new business owners are daunted by the mere idea of bookkeeping and accounting. But in reality, both are pretty simple. Keep in mind that bookkeeping and accounting share two basic goals: to keep track of income and expenses, which improves chances of making a profit, and to collect the financial information necessary for filing various tax returns. As long as records accurately reflect the business's income and expenses, there is a requirement, however, that some businesses use a certain method of crediting their accounts: the cash method or accrual method. An accounting system records, retains and reproduces financial information relating to financial transaction flows and financial position. Financial transaction flows encompass primarily inflows on account of incomes and outflows on account of expenses. Elements of financial position, including property, money received, or money spent, are assigned to one of the primary groups, that is, assets, liabilities, and equity. Within these primary groups each distinctive asset, liability, income and expense is represented by respective "account".

An account is simply a record of financial inflows and outflows in relation to the respective asset, liability, income or expense. Income and expense accounts are considered temporary accounts, since they represent only the inflows and outflows absorbed in the financial-position elements on completion of the time period (Williams, Haka, Bettner, and Carcello, 2008). Audits of small scale enterprises have proven to be among the most worrisome for professional accountants because of the inadequacy of the internal controls. Except for statutory demands, small and medium scale enterprises hardly give serious thoughts to the process of sound accounting, yet the inadequacy and ineffectiveness of accounting processes have been responsible for untimely collapse of a host of them (Mukaila and Adeyemi, 2011). The level of book keeping and accounting in one man businesses have created many problems against the effective operation and accountability of a sole proprietorship. One man business suffers disproportionately from the regulatory burden compared to large companies, since the smaller enterprises often do not have sufficient financial and human resources to manage their obligations in the most efficient way. (Abdulrasheed, Khadijat and Oyebola, 2012).

Meanwhile, a number of Small Scale Enterprises have not given much attention to book keeping in relation to their business transaction, despite its importance in the success of businesses. This could be lack of sound knowledge in book keeping practices by owners or respective managers. Also, there was difficulty in ascertaining whether there is a comprehensive accounting record that satisfied the laws under which it was incorporation. (Onaolapo and Adegbite, 2014).

It was hard to determine to what extent no adherence to laid - down accounting procedure and constituted in the wheel of implementation of good accounting system. Difficult exist in ascertaining how far non - recognition of the necessity of accounting to continued existence and growth, low educational background of owners and the employment of unskilled accounting staff had affected the production of unreliable accounting or financial statement. This research on ‘Effect of unemployment on the economic development of Nigeria, on Nkanu West Enugu State. The research work objectives to: identify factors that cause unemployment in Nigeria, investigate the extent to which government has helped in tackling unemployment problems in Nigeria, determine programmes that can help to tackle unemployment problems in Nigeria. The researcher adopted both primary and secondary means of data collection. The population of the study was randomly selected as 234 in number and the sample size is 148. The Taro Yamane’s formula was used, while chi-square was adopted in testing the hypotheses. The research work also made the following findings; the research study reveals that Unemployment impedes economic development in Nigeria, it was also discovered that Epileptic electric power supply, poor quality of education, Negligence of Agriculture and Corruption is among the causes of unemployment in Nigeria, Nigeria is at its lowest ebb in human capital development and utilization because of its inadequate educational system which tends to produce more of those who lack job skills for employment than those the economy requires to remain vibrant. It was recommended that the government should invests more on industrialization in to absorb Unemployed graduates, the government should be more efforts in making our electric power supply more steady which will enhance development of the Nation.

1.1 Background of the Study

As history would have it, Nigeria as a nation has experienced several forms of economic, political and social unrest. In recent times, unemployment which is caused by individuals and government forces had joined the list of the social evils we experience in Nigeria today. The issue of unemployment has become a world-wide phenomenon demanding for increased attention, though the impact is more devastating in developing nation (Wamukonya, 2003). According to the National Bureau of Statistics (2012), Nigeria rate of unemployment stand at 19.7%. In fact, Feridum and Akindele (2006); George and Oseni (2012); Ezie (2012) and Ede, Ndubisi, and Nwankwo (2013), identify unemployment as one of the major challenges confronting the Nigeria-economic development. The menace of unemployment in Nigeria both now and in the recent past has been an issue of great concern to the economists, policy makers, economic managers, individuals, government and many others (Bello, 2003). This earliest thinking on economic issues did not fail to give a central point of reflection on the undesirability of unemployment (Njoku and Ihugba, 2011). Unemployment has been defined as a situation where people who are willing and capable of working are unable to find suitable paid employment (Fajana, 2000). The same writer went further to say that, the higher the rate of unemployment in an economy, the higher the level of poverty and associated welfare challenges.

However, the number of people in any country is divided into two groups; the economically active and the economically inactive. According to Njoku and Ihugba (2011), the economically active group (Labour force) are the group that are willing and able to work, including those actively engaged in the production of goods and services (employed) and those who are not employed. On the other hand, the economically inactive group refers to neither people who are not looking for jobs nor those who are not capable enough as a result of health related issues. To further buttress this, International Labour Organisation (ILO) define the unemployed as numbers of the economically active population who are without work but available and seeking for work, including people who have lost their job and those who have voluntarily left work (World Bank, 1998).

The menace of unemployment is geometrically increasing and the effects falls heavily on the economic development of this nation (Nigeria). Njoku James, Eze (2011) noted that consequences of unemployment in Nigeria is not only that it has increased the rate of crime in the country, but has also affected the economic development of Nigeria.
