I’m working on a football data integration and I’m trying to figure out the cleanest way to handle live match updates.

At the moment I’m testing the Sportmicro API for fixtures, scores, match events and statistics.

The simple approach would be to request the live match endpoint every few seconds, but I’m concerned about unnecessary API requests once the number of matches grows.

For example, if there are 30 live matches at the same time and I poll each one every 5–10 seconds, the request volume increases very quickly.

For developers who have built live score, sports analytics or football applications before, what approach do you normally use?

Would you:

Poll one endpoint containing all currently live matches?
Poll individual matches only after detecting that they are live?
Use WebSockets whenever the provider supports them?
Cache match data locally and only update fields that have changed?
Use different polling intervals depending on whether a match is pre-game, live or finished?

I’m especially interested in how people balance low latency with keeping API usage reasonable.

Would be useful to hear how others structure this on the backend for a production sports application.

For me, fast updates and simple navigation are more important than having too many features.
