PoliticsPlans To Make Nigeria Islamic State ’ll Fail –okogie by cleancarconnect(op): 11:06pm On Jun 18, 2016
THE Catholic Archbishop Emeritus of Lagos, Anthony Cardinal Okogie, has condemned the recent curriculum crisis in some schools in South West, describing it as a plot to make a particular religious group more prominent than another.

He stated this on Thursday during the celebration of 80th birthday and 50th anniversary of his priesthood ordination at the Holy Cross Cathedral, Lagos.

According to him, “I am seeing something that has not yet manifested. They are secretly trying to make Nigeria an Islamic State. But that cannot happen. During my tenure as the President of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), then Head of State, General Ibrahim Babangida tried it by going to Organisation of Islamic Countries (OIC), meeting secretly and claimed to be an observer. As a Head of state of a country, how could he have gone to such meeting without anyone following him? Who sent him there? And the people he went to meet did not ask him who sent him. But at the end, his plans failed.”

Okogie also cited the activities of Governor El- Rufai of Kaduna State against Christian religious groups, stating that all are centred on religious intolerance and oppression. “What El-Refai is doing in Kaduna is another way they are moving. They move from one place to another. And after sometime, they hid and reappear again, thinking that no one is seeing them.

“In fact, Nigerians are watching their footsteps. And, if they think they will succeed in making Nigeria an Islamic country through all these activities, they are joking, because Christians will not allow that to happen. So, those trying to play such practices should be mindful of the repercussions and have a rethink.”

The Archbishop emeritus, who described the ceremony as extraordinary and one of the best, also called on President Muhammad Buhari to make a quick turn-around on the economy of Nigeria by going back to study his inaugural speech and APC manifesto, then start afresh.

PoliticsConstitution Amendment: Senate To Strip Buhari Of Power Of Assent by cleancarconnect(op): 10:35pm On Jun 18, 2016
THE Senate has revealed plans to strip President Muhammadu Buhari of powers to assent the ongoing constitution amendment.

Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu who doubles as the chairman of the Senate committee on constitution review, made the revelation when he spoke at the ongoing retreat by the committee, holding in Eko Hotels and Suites, Lagos.

He said since former President Goodluck Jonathan did not sign the Fourth Alteration Bill into law, which strips the president of powers to veto any bill, it will be reconsidered with fresh inputs.

He said: “A bill to amend any portion of the constitution is not an ordinary bill. It is the only bill that requires the two-thirds majority of each Chamber of the National Assembly to pass in the first instance. It is also the only bill that requires the approval of two-thirds of the States Assembly to pass.

“Presidential veto of a bill to amend the constitution makes jest of the philosophy of sovereignty, which is that power belongs to the people, and that the people exercise this sovereignty through their representatives in parliament.

“Nigerians have argued, and rightly so, that the Constitution would have made explicit prescriptions on how such veto could be reversed, if it were the expectation of the framers of the Constitution for one man or woman to veto a constitution amendment.”

PoliticsFani-kayode: EFCC Wants Me To Refund N840m Without Trial by cleancarconnect(op): 5:29am On Jun 16, 2016
FORMER Aviation Minister, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, has asked the Federal High Court, Lagos, to admit him to bail 24 hours after he was arraigned on a 17-count charged by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). He also alleged that he is being pressured by EFCC to refund N84o million without trial.

In the motion for bail filed on his behalf by his counsel, Mr. Ahmed Raji (SAN), Fani-Kayode told the court that he would be ready and willing to provide a responsible surety(ies) as may be required by the court as a condition(s) for the grant of his application.

He argued that under the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA), bail is more relaxed as all offences are bailable “and in the class of offences charged, it is the prosecution that has a burden to show why bail should be refused. More so, under the Act, all offences can be compounded by plea bargain. So, it is not about imprisonment any longer.”

He further argued that one of the co-accused in the charge, a former Minister of Finance, Senator Nenadi Usman, who allegedly received the money from government and paid Fani-Kayode, wrote that she did not know the money was from government. So, how would Fani- Kayode know?

EFCC slammed Fani- Kayode and Usman with a 17-count charge for fraud and money laundering.

Fani-Kayode was arrested for allegedly receiving N840 million during the presidential campaign of former president Goodluck Jonathan.

In the motion dated June 15, 2016, Raji argued that the offences, for which his client is charged, are bailable.

“The Defendant/Applicant has never been convicted of any offence in Nigeria or any other jurisdiction.

By Section 36 (5) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), the Defendant/Applicant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

“The reputation and past credible record of the Defendant/Applicant attest to the fact that he will not jump bail if he is granted same. The Defendant/ Applicant will not interfere with the investigation or further investigation of the charges preferred against him.
