Landing gist

We got to the airport at 10am for our 1:40 Ethiopian airline flight on Saturday 6th April. Check in was smooth. I had earlier gotten a travel scale to help guide the weight of our bags. So we had no issue of overweight bags. Bags checked and we had over an hour to say our goodbyes. My wife and i are newly weds so we had a lot of family members accompany us to the airport. Next thing i knew, tears from everyone. It was really emotional especially for my wife's parents. It was bad enough i took their only daughter, now im taking her across the globe. We went through immigration without issues. Just their normal institutionalized begging. One immigration officer jokingly asked if he could follow us to Canada...and i was like ‘dude you are the boss here and your decision. He sha said he's also been trying express entry but has not been successful. I wished him good luck and we went our way.

Flight from Lagos to Addis abba was ok. Food was ok too, but we had also gotten snacks from KFC at the food court so we were cool. In-flight entertainment was just there. Flight was long but went buy quickly, thanks to the movie we watched.

Landed at addis ababa and quickly went through security and then to our boarding gate  to catch our connecting flight to Toronto via dublin. During security, our passports was collected for further verification, we were first apprehensive about this, but later found out it was done too most people, especially non USA and Canadian passport holders. Our passports were returned and we waited for boarding.  Flight was a full and the food on the dublin leg was rubbish. We ate what we could as we were hungry and there was no more KFC to fall back on. In-flight entertainment was much better. Watched a few movies and slept. Woke up in dublin to refuel and crew change. We continued our journey to toronto. Food was ok on this leg and we slept shortly after.

Before we left lagos, during our checking in, we were informed that our connecting Air canada flight to calgary was moved forward from the initial 12pm we booked to 9:50am. This was the first sign of Village People, as we were due to arrive at 8am in toronto and i had left ample time to clear landing formalities but this new time would have made it almost impossible.

We landed in toronto around 8am on sunday and quickly rushed to immigration. To my surprise there was no queue and we were attended to immediately. We signed our COPR and the officer asked for the time for our connecting flight, we told him and he quickly released us. Because it was a Sunday, Service Canada did not open so we didn't bother and rushed down to baggage claim. At this point we were already racing against time as our Calgary flight had started boarding. We picked up our bags from the carousel rushed to check them in, the attendant had to call her supervisor for his clearance because we were already running late and boarding almost complete.

Then we started running to our boarding gate, which was now crazily far away. Went through security and one of our hand luggage was flagged for further check. In my mind i was like “ Village People people ti finally get mi” Final boarding call was made while physical checks were still being carried out. They checked and it was my wife's wipes that triggered the further checks. The officer apologized for the delay and we were off. We started running and was almost out of breath. Finally we got to the gate and the worst happened.

We were told that we had been rescheduled to a 5:50 pm flight. I was livid. After everything we had been through. Being devastated was putting it mildly. But we tried to remain calm. We asked for explanations and we were told that the government had grounded all their B737 max aircraft and since that's the flight we were originally booked on they could only help reschedule us as they deemed fit. When we asked for a form of compensation, they lady just smiled and told us to write to the Canadian government for compensation as they were the ones responsible for the disruptions. Alot happened between 10am and 5.50pm which included going back to CBSA for goods to follow but  i will not bore you as this write up is becoming too long. Anyways we finally boarded to Calgary, we were soo tired and the flight was very uncomfortable. We just wanted to land and the 4 hours on-board felt like 6.

We landed safely in Calgary, our host was waiting to take us home.

Got home to a nice meal. Showered, ate and went to bed.

Monday came, went to service Canada and registry, opened bank accounts, got a sim and enjoying the city.

Loving the city, the cold has been mild and loving it. Anything but that lagos heat abeg.

My Canadian dream is now a reality. grin grin
