PoliticsRe: Nigeria's Economy Under Threat As Oil Falls Below $50 A Barrel by cmatrix: 1:24am On Nov 22, 2008
DeepZone I am quite amazed at your rational (Trickle down economics) - do you seriously believe in that garbage as a Nigerian? If you are one of those people benefiting from government contracts, please just say so; this way we'll know where you are coming from. Nothing trickles down in Nigeria, except abject poverty - 5th or 6th largest oil producing country in the world, with nothing to show for it. Just look at our communities, infrastructure, schools, etc, it is quite shameful! None of this compares to other oil producing countries, not even Venezuela, I might add. Most of our officials today are in the office for one reason only - get rich! They don't love this great country of ours, and are hardly patriotic. If you love something you take good care of it, not loot and run it down.

Our main export markets for crude are gearing up for the next wave of technology, Renewable Energy! Be it Solar, wind, or Nuclear,

We need to make sure our government officials are not looting treasuries, but are investing in farming, new technology, and infrastructure that fosters the same. We'll be doomed if this is not done. Let's not hope on the Chinese or Indians to purchase crude for their energy-hungry industries. These guys will follow suit with US wrt newer sources of energy, this has always been the case. And for the US, this is their only way out of a very gloomy economy. Obama will no doubt in mind invest heavily on renewable sources of energy - this is the only way out of the US recession. The Chinese are kicking ass on all other fronts as it has to do with US revenue streams.

, and also, it is quite possible that oil is a curse on Nigeria anyways - it has created unprecedented corruption in the government sector; The polity of “Do Whatever It Takes To Win”. Just maybe, without Crude we’ll become more innovative and competitive in the global arena of technological advancement. Just reading through the various blogs in Nairaland, you’d quickly realize that there are countless bright minds in or from this our great country.
PoliticsRe: Oshiomhole Gives Osunbor 24-hr Ultimatum by cmatrix(op): 8:31pm On Nov 21, 2008
The campaigning is over and the courts have confirmed Oshiomole as the rightful Governor of the state. Would this not be the time to mend fences and go about the business of promised good governance; moving the state forward; and putting programs/projects in place to actualize the mandates to the people?

For the public policy folks in the house, is the governor following due process when he goes to the News papers and give the ex-governor an ultimatum?

PoliticsRe: Oshiomole Threatens To Arrest Exgov Osunbor. by cmatrix: 6:56pm On Nov 18, 2008
Quite on the contrarary @meexteriox - I am not in anyway suggesting that Osumbo and his alleged cronies in crime should not be prosecuted for looting the liaison office in Abuja. I'm merely saying that Oshiomole should not loose track of the most important mandate to the electorate - making a difference in people's lives. And I don't see any other way to actualize this rather huge task, than to create jobs for the unemployed.

The last time I looked, we still have 3 main branches of government; the Executive, Legislative, and the Judiciary - the judiciary is responsible for ensuring the rule of law is adhered to. And if I may add, our legal system still works [at times, maybe], and there's due process. Oshiomole has benefited from this. Alleged crooked Ex-Govs can be brought to justice by the law - they can be probed successfully, and this' not the main duty of the executive branch.

We the electorate of the state are looking to our ex labor leader to provide some positive way forward, and move the state in the right direction. Oshiomole has always fought for the not so fortunate man thru rallies and general strikes, he's now at the helm of government to put some of those rally talking points into practice. He need not get people into the streets to get this done now.
PoliticsRe: Oshiomole Threatens To Arrest Exgov Osunbor. by cmatrix: 1:07am On Nov 18, 2008
I certainly hope Oshiomole will not spend his term in office sweating mediocrity - the people of Edo state need real changes. He need not spend his time on this trivial stuff - trivial indeed; in the greater scheme of things, like creating jobs for the people of Edo state. Putting food on the table is what's really important to the guy who's struggling to make ends meet. He should speak to college grads who don't have jobs - or the necessary skillset for the job place. The students are his grassroot supporters

Assuming these allegations are true, there're avenues and other branches of govt to deal with this type of issues, it does not have to be the state executive branch.

We should not loose track of why the majority Edo state voted for him in the first place - it was not to arrest some unscrupulous person(s) allegedly stealing dishes and housewares.

He has opportunity to make true and lasting changes in the lives of the people of the state. I wish him all the best.
PoliticsRe: Oshiomole confirmed as Governor of Edo State! by cmatrix: 1:29am On Nov 15, 2008
Truequest, I agree with you, we should give him time to prove himself.

Personally, I don't want to start jumping around just yet, there are quite a few obstacles he has to contend with:

(1) The state house of reps are still majority PDP
(2) Can he go from forceful tendencies for change to a more deplomatic approach
(3) Can he really shed some of the not so scrupulous comrades - the merciless enforcers of the NLC

Oshiomole is like no other governor in Nigeria - so he has a great opportunity to change the face of politics and be exemplary. I certainly hope he achieves this - the people of Edo deserve good governance. We went thru hell with Lucky.
PoliticsRe: Oshiomole confirmed as Governor of Edo State! by cmatrix: 1:48am On Nov 14, 2008
I am not too sure if this’ the best thing for the people of Edo state – but I am willing to afford the new governor a chance to prove himself. It won’t be easy; Osunbor actually did quite a bit in a very short time.

I think my doubts stems from the fact that Oshiomole has always been a radical – and as history have taught us, radicals are never good leaders, as matter of fact for the most part they turn out to be dictators.

As an indigene of the state, I am very leery of all the promises he has made – is anyone wondering how these projects would be paid for?

My biggest concern is that Benin city will become the heaven for thugs – I certainly pray my fears are unfounded.

May God bless the people of Edo state, and our beloved country.
Science/TechnologyRe: Nigcomsat-i [made In China]: Another ~$390m Wasted On Junk? by cmatrix(op): 9:24pm On Nov 13, 2008
Of all the countries we could have approached to launch deploy satellite, we chose China, I guess you get what you pay for.
Science/TechnologyNigcomsat-i [made In China]: Another ~$390m Wasted On Junk? by cmatrix(op): 9:17pm On Nov 13, 2008
NigComsat-I, can anyone tell me how you would park a satellite like you would a car?

excerpt from "http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2008-11/13/content_10349614.htm"

", But on Wednesday Minister of State for Science and Technology Alhassan Zaku told journalists it had lost power and had to be "parked, like you would park a car".

Or is it that we have just spent $390m on a piece of junk? This satellite was supposed to be operational for 15yrs, now, just a year after launch our learned Minister insists it is "parked like a car in space" It is not broken, but parked, huh
