China’s first domestically built aircraft carrier, "Shandong" (penant number 17), was delivered and commissioned today in to the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN or Chinese navy) in Sanya, South China’s Hainan Province.

This is the PLAN’s 2nd aircraft carrier but the first one fully designed and built locally by the engineers of the 701 Institute of the CSIC group on the basis of Project 1134.5 Varyag (known as Liaoning today and in service with the PLAN). It was previously known as “Type 002”.

The aircraft carrier received a grand commissioning ceremony at a naval base in Sanya in presence of President Xi Jinping.

Construction of Shandong began in November 2013. It was launched in April 2017 at the Dalian Shipyard, Northeast China’s Liaoning Province.


Having a displacement of around 40,000-60,000 tons and using a similar ski-jump flight deck as the Liaoning, the conventional-powered Shandong is equipped with more advanced electronic devices and control and command system, and built with an optimized superstructure and internal layout, after gaining actual-user experiences following the Liaoning’s commissioning in 2012.

According to Chinese media, Shandong airwing can carry 36 J-15 fighter jets, compared to the Liaoning’s 24.

China Railway Engineering Equipment Group Co, the country's biggest manufacturer of tunnel boring machines by both production capacity and revenue, will ship eight sets of the giant machines to international markets including Israel and Singapore in the second half of this year, its chairman said.

CREG, a unit of State-owned China Railway Group Ltd, focuses on the development and production of shield tunneling machines and tunnel boring machines. China used to completely rely on imports until 2008 when CREG independently developed its own shield tunneling machine after six years of research.

Chairman Tan Shunhui said CREG planned to establish new operation centers in Australia, the United States and Italy over the next three years.

He said it would build sales networks and team up with local dealers, as well as handling tender and bid processes in more overseas projects, especially those countries and regions related to the Belt and Road Initiative.

"Many of these opportunities come from these markets' growing demand for subway projects, water conservation, railways, highways and underground crossings," Tan said.

He said that undeveloped infrastructure poses a bottleneck to economic development in countries and regions related to the initiative.

The Zhengzhou-based company has so far produced some 592 tunnel boring machines for both the domestic and international markets, including 25 sets for international destinations such as Vietnam, Lebanon, India and Malaysia.

CREG's sales totaled 4.86 billion yuan ($704 million) in 2016, up 152 percent year-on-year, while export volumes last year reached 370 million yuan, up 203 percent from 2015.

The company said its tunneling machines had notable advantages over traditional excavators because they were safer, faster and more convenient. They can operate totally underground, without disturbing traffic above. Moreover, they freed up staff from dangerous work.

CREG already opened an operation center in Germany to handle European contracts and others in Singapore and Hong Kong to manage its Asian and African projects. It also supplied pipe jacking machines and auxiliary equipment to clients in South Korea and Iran.

"We found that many developed markets have increasing demand to expand their metro networks," Tan said.

He said the company's next priority was securing orders for tunnel-engineering equipment from high-speed railway projects in the United Kingdom and Turin's water improvement project in Italy. The company has more than 2,260 employees, including 80 technicians carrying out consultancy and after sales work in overseas markets.

Sun Fuquan, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Science and Technology for Development in Beijing, said Chinese engineering equipment makers are set to become some of the largest beneficiaries of the Belt and Road Initiative.

"It is critical for them to enhance brand recognition and a localization process to further compete with those established rivals from Japan, Germany, Sweden and the United States," Sun said.

Chinese firm exports tunnel boring machine to Italy

ZHENGZHOU, June 24 (Xinhua) -- China Railway Engineering Equipment Group Co., Ltd. (CREG) said it has rolled off the tunnel boring machine (TBM), which will be exported to Italy for a high-speed railway building project linking Milan and Verona.

The machine, finished Saturday at its workshop in Zhengzhou, capital of central China's Henan Province, has a diameter of 10.03 meters and an overall length of 155 meters, and weighs 1,800 tonnes.

Franco Lombardi, president of the Italian Cepav Due joint venture, said that the construction project undertaker chose the CREG from a number of bidders for purchasing the TBM, as the Chinese firm was willing to provide customized solutions.

Zhang Zhiguo, deputy general manager of CREG, said that the export to Italy marked the company's entry into the European market, a milestone for CREG's export.

The CREG has participated in urban rail and drinking water projects in 19 countries and regions including Malaysia, Singapore, Algeria and the United Arab Emirates.

Two large shield tunneling machines rolled off the production line Dec. 4 in Zhengzhou, capital of central China’s Henan Province, and will be exported to France for the construction of Paris Metro Line 16, according to Chinese news agency Xinhua.

With a diameter of 9.86 m and an overall length of about 115 m, the two earth pressure balance shield tunnel boring machines were produced by the Zhengzhou-headquartered China Railway Engineering Equipment Group Co. Ltd. (CREG).

The two machines will tunnel through layers of plaster, silty clay, gypsiferous marl and limestone along the Paris Metro Line 16, which is a major part of the Grand Paris Express rapid-transit metro network and expected to be put into operation in 2023.

“CREG is the first-ever and only Chinese shield tunneling machine manufacturer to help build the Paris Metro,” said Tan Shunhui, chairman of CREG.

CREG has taken the largest market share in China since 2012, and topped the world in 2017 and 2018 in terms of shield tunneling machine production and sales volume.

The company has exported its products to 20 countries and regions including Italy, Denmark, Singapore, Australia and Algeria.
