CHAPTER 2
KEN’S FAMILY HOUSE
How are you my daughter? Mr. Roberts asked Adora a simple question as he smiled just like Ken his son. It was obvious that they smiled a lot in that family.
“I am Adora Peter Obinna”, Adora responded. She couldn’t raise her head up to look at Ken’s parents in the face.
“Are you the daughter of engineer Obinna, the former minister of works and housing?”
Adora was astonished and unhappy because she did not like to be recognized as the daughter of a rich man. She detested it.
“Yes sir I am sir ……………….” She lowered her head as a sign of humility
“That is fine my girl relax. You are at home here. Make yourself comfortable please.
Ken’s mother entertained their guest whole heartedly. Adora was happy and she felt at home. She played with Ken’s younger ones Mary and Paul. They were twins and Adora went along with every member of Ken’s family.
Ken was on top of the world as he sat on a chair in the poorly furnitured sitting room. Everyone in the village knew somebody great came around. When it was time to leave, she knelt down and gave an envelop each to Ken’s mother and his younger ones.
When Adora had left, his best friends Kunle and Fola came to congratulate him because they knew the kind of person their friend was. Ken was a shy person. Bringing a lady home was a thing of joy to them.
“Oko Iyawo atata” Kunle and Fola said playfully in their local dialect.
“Emi niyen jor” Ken replied shyly
So you can woo a lady. That’s a bold step you have taken,” said Kunle
I hope you didn’t spend a year practicing what you will say when you first met, Fola said.
Ken punched Fola hard on his shoulders and he yelled. They teased him a lot and he felt happy.
Ken returned back into the house and his father summoned him into the bedroom. “Are you sure the parents of the that girl would allow you to marry their daughter? He asked?
Roberts started gently. He spoke so quietly that no one could hear him.
“Definitely Papa, I am planning a visit after our youth service to their house to know her parents just as she did.
“I have my reason for asking. That girl is innocent and humble but her parents are very wealthy. Rich people hardly allow their children to marry paupers like us”. Mr. Roberts retorted stressing out the important points.
“You are right father but the most important thing is the love between us. She loves me father and I love her too.” Ken stated.”
“I understand you son. I know you love each other but you need to understand my point. There is a wide margin between the rich and the poor, that margin would be there forever. You and I cannot remove it. The rich would not always want their children to marry anybody from a poor background”. Mr. Roberts spoke with great concern as he looked at his son’s face hoping he understood his plight.
It is when you get into the house of that girl and they accept you that is when you can be sure of marrying her. Parental consent is very important in a marital relationship. If a parent insists that their child should not marry somebody, it will stand. Please son, you need to be sure you will be accepted first in that relationship. Ken’s father dropped the final word and walked away leaving him to his thoughts.
After that day, Ken became a worried man. He loved Adora so much and could imagine anything standing their ways.
“What if her parents don’t accept me as their son in-law?” Ken asked himself. He could not forget his father’s words. He knew his father too well. He was like a prophet and hardly said something without coming to pass. He was a wise and highly intelligent man who had great experiences in issues of life.

MEETING POINT
Ken went back to Lagos and met Adora at their usual meeting point. After exchanging pleasantries and asking after each other’s families.
“I have something important to discuss with you my love. I hope you will understand the basis of the content of our discussion”. Ken said
“Am listening my darling” replied Adora.
Adora smiled as she waited impatiently over what her heartrob have to say.
“My parents accepted you” Ken began
Is that so? Am so excited and great. She stood up from where she sat and hugged him tightly.
“My father suggested that I visit your house so as to know my fate. He said further that your parents being rich may not accept me, he said that only few rich parents would allow their children to get married to a pauper”.
Ken rounded and sigh, he looked at her love bird and wondered what she has to say.
“I promise never to leave you Ken, I love you so much and I chose to be with you for the rest of my life. Never pledge the allegiance of my love to any one else”. Adora rounded off her “sweet” talk that day as Ken smiled and spoke quietly. “I trust you dear, I will always love you.
Just wait till the end of NYSC scheme and I will introduce you to my parents. Adora assured her darling. They each settled down to eat and drank to their satisfaction in the restaurant.
Two weeks later, they met again at school to collect their NYSC posting letters as scheduled. They were posted to two different states. Adora was posted to Niger state while Ken was posted to Bayelsa state. They accepted their fate and prayed to God to keep them when they would b going finally.
Ken got home and arranged all his needs for the journey. His parents were most happy and grateful because Ken was their first child.
Adora prepared well for her youth service. She was to travel by air to Niger state.

AT THE MOTOR PARK
The two love birds met at the ojota motor park and sat in a restaurant attached to the park. They ate and drank and plated with each other.
“we will soon depart”
“yes Ken don’t worry. I will be the first to call your mobile as soon as I land in the airport. My flight is scheduled or six not seven. She informed Ken.
After a lot of promises to each other, Adora rose up and embraced her love and bidded him farewell.
Ken could not utter a word as he watched the love of his life fading away into thin air.
What happened to the promises made to each other?
Watch out in part 3
