It has never been easier to sign up for and access new services online – with the result that more companies than ever hold information about you.

Data breaches are now commonplace, but it is usually only when identity is “stolen” or your bank account accessed that you realise your information is circulating among criminals.

A Google search isn’t going to reveal the websites selling your credit card number or driving licence details, as that kind of trading happens on the “dark web”.

This is the collective term for websites where the identity of the host and user are hidden and encrypted.

Although not technically difficult to access, an individual stands next to no chance of successfully tracking down their information on such illicit marketplaces.

Equifax, one of the three credit reference agencies (Callcredit and Experian being the other two), offers a service called WebDetect, which claims to trawl the “dark web” to find your personal information.

Up to six phone numbers, email addresses and bank card numbers can be monitored, along with a National Insurance number and driving licence information.

Customers are alerted by email or text, giving them the opportunity to change passwords or cancel credit cards before they become a victim of fraud.

The anonymity and security of the “dark web” mean this service is not intended to track down the culprit, just to provide an alert when information is found.

When Telegraph Money tried the service, we found the amount of information you could track to cover most of what would be of concern. However, there were gaps: passport information, social media accounts and logins for websites such as ebay were just a few danger zones.

While it was a relief to not receive any alerts, the nature of the “dark web” means that it is ultimately impossible as a user to gauge how well the service performs.

If you haven’t used up your Equifax free trial already, it may be worth using it to check for any red flags, but whether it’s worth paying an ongoing fee depends on how security savvy you already are.

Otherwise, it comes as part of Equifax’s £14.95 monthly credit report and score subscription, or costs £2.99 a month as a standalone subscription.

The Equifax service is not new, but data breaches are starting to become a bigger concern to consumers, which is driving increased interest.

Many lost money in the wake of the TalkTalk hack, and The Times last week reported the discovery of a new criminal web network where 100,000 Briton’s credit and debits card details were listed for sale. The network disappeared after being exposed by the Times investigation, it was reported today.

What can be done to protect your information?

Action Fraud provided a number of these suggestions.

Always check what you’re agreeing to when signing up to a new service, and untick any boxes giving permission for your data to be sold to third parties.
Develop strong passwords (including symbols, upper and lower case letters, numbers) that are different for each account and don’t store them all in one place (such as on your phone).
Never respond to unsolicited emails or phone calls or click on unknown links, and always report suspected fraud to your bank or card issuer. If you receive a suspect phone call, check the line has cleared (listen for a dial tone) or use a different phone if possible to call to report it. Your bank or the police would never ask for your Pin code or online banking passwords over the phone.
Limit the amount of information available on your public social media profiles, including date of birth and address (Facebook has comprehensive security settings that allow you to tailor what strangers can see).
Check your credit report regularly for new accounts and changes that you have not initiated. This doesn’t have to cost you anything: Clearscore and Noddle are both free services, while Experian and Equifax offer free trials. Sign up for alerts so you know when anything changes.
Install security software on all devices and make sure they are all password protected, including phones and tablets, especially if you do mobile banking.
Encrypt hard drives that contain personal information (you can easily do this for free on Windows PCs and Macs).
If you think you’re a victim, report it to Action Fraud, the national fraud and internet crime reporting service (0300 123 2040).
