lowkeybahdguy:
The truth is most cars we buy as 'direct Belgium' here are either totalled or stolen vehicles. I had similar experience with my car. I didn't know it's history, but driving just felt a bit off until I had an accident. Checking the car, I discovered it had be severely accidented before and possibly affected the chassis. I've never looked at it the same again.

Our govt doesn't make it any easier with the exorbitant cost of import duties. Most cars we buy for 15m are valued less than 6 m. Until you factor in cost of import and duties surcharge.

We are spending so much money to put our lives at risks. Crazy work.

AutosPortable’s Benz Debt: VIN Check Uncovers Shocking Damag by computerglobal(op): 1:31am On Jul 04, 2025
[b]In a recent exclusive interview with Punch Nigeria, Temitope Ogunsanwo, owner of Temmy Autos in Lagos, revealed the ongoing dispute between him and the controversial street singer Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable. The conflict centers on an unpaid balance of N14 million for a black Mercedes-Benz GLE 350, originally purchased for N27 million.

The Deal and Default
Ogunsanwo disclosed that Portable, introduced to him by a mutual friend, showed interest in acquiring the Mercedes-Benz GLE 350 in early 2024. Initially, Portable requested to pay in instalments, a proposal Ogunsanwo was reluctant to accept but eventually agreed to, relying on the assurance of the friend.

The agreed payment schedule was as follows:

N12 million upfront on January 10, 2024

N5 million on January 24, 2024

N5 million on February 10, 2024

Final N5 million on February 24, 2024

Despite this, Portable failed to make the initial full payment on time. He started with small staggered payments ranging from N1 million to N3 million and ultimately paid only N13 million before ceasing payments altogether.

Attempts at Resolution and Legal Action
Repeated attempts by Ogunsanwo to contact Portable proved futile as the singer began avoiding calls or responding with verbal abuse. The car dealer also reached out to Portable’s family and legal representatives but saw no resolution.

Frustrated, Ogunsanwo reported the matter to the Zone 2 Police Command, where Portable was summoned but failed to appear. The matter was then escalated to the Commissioner of Police, resulting in Portable’s arrest three days prior to the interview.

Shocking Discovery: The Vehicle’s Damaged History
Adding a new layer of complexity to the dispute, Ogunsanwo conducted a comprehensive VIN check on Verifyithq.com, a trusted vehicle history platform popular in Nigeria and beyond. The report revealed that the Mercedes-Benz GLE 350 had been badly damaged prior to being shipped to Nigeria

In the wake of incidents like the interception of stolen Canadian cars at Apapa Port, buyers and importers must take extra precautions. A VIN check is your first line of defense against scams and legal trouble when dealing with overseas vehicles. Think of it as a passport check for cars—no one should travel without one, and no car should be bought without verifying its identity

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Apapa Command, has successfully intercepted two luxury vehicles stolen from Canada and smuggled into Nigeria. Additionally, the command seized prohibited goods with a combined Duty Paid Value (DPV) exceeding N3.2 billion. These operations were part of a coordinated effort involving international and inter-agency collaboration, including the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency
