Carlota Lucumi:

The story of Carlota Lucumi happened in 1843-44 where she led the greatest revolt in history of Cuba. Her travails was part of what later inspired the great Fidel Castro, former Head of State of Cuba.

There have been several slave revolts led by brave men and male soldiers, but this time it is different because it was led by a Yoruba woman, Lucumi. She rose among the other enslaved Africans working in Triunvirato sugar plantation and other plantation in Matanzas Cuba

She planned for several months with Firmina- also a woman, Fillipe Lucumi, Eduardo, Narciso and Manuel Ganga and they launched their attack on the 5th of November 1843 against the Mayor of the town and the owner of Sugar Mills in the town Alfonso Luis.

Their revolt spread wide across 5 plantations as they burnt houses where slaves were kept and tortured, killed as many white people as they could. Lucumi herself killed the daughter of an Overseer with a Machete

The revolt was so wild they had to bring in soldiers to quell it and in March 1844, Oral tradition has it that Lucumi was captured and tortured to death by Soldiers

They bind her and tied her to horses to drag her until she died.

Although it was an unsuccessful revolt but it played a huge role in the Cuban independence of 1868. It was the largest and last rebellion in their history and it sent a shock wave into the hearts of the whites.
