10 BUSINESS TIPS EVERY ENTREPRENEUR SHOULD KNOW. The biggest problem founders and small business owners have is that they’re experts in their field and novices in what it really takes to effectively run a business. That’s what usually trips them up, sooner or later. Don’t let that happen to you. Admit that you don’t know what you don’t know about business, starting with these 10 tips guaranteed to help keep you and your company out of hot water. Some are straightforward, others are counterintuitive, but they’re all true. And some day they’ll save your butt. 1. The problem is probably you. 90 percent of all problems are management problems. When things aren’t going well, the first place to look for answers is in the mirror. 2. Take care of your stars. This goes for every company, big and small. The cost of losing a star employee is enormous, yet business leaders rarely take the time to ensure their top performers are properly motivated, challenged, and compensated. 3. Treat all your employees and partners well If you use and abuse them that way, you will come to regret it! Simple! 4. Learn to say "yes" and "no" a lot. The two most important words business owners and founders have at their disposal are “yes” and “no.” Learn to say them a lot. And that means being decisive. The most important reason to focus – to be clear on what your company does – is to be clear on all the things it doesn’t do. 5. Listen to your customers. It boggles my mind how little most entrepreneurs value their customers when, not only are their feedback and input among the most critical information they will ever learn, but their repeat business is the easiest business to get. 6. Know when and when not to be transparent. Transparency is as detrimental at some times as it is beneficial at others. There are times to share openly and times to zip it. You need to know when and with whom to do one versus the other. It comes with experience. 7. Trust your gut. This phrase is often repeated but rarely understood. It means that your own instincts are an extremely valuable decision-making tool. Too often we end up saying in retrospect and with regret, “Damn, I knew that was a bad idea.” But the key is to know how to access your instincts. Just sit, be quiet, and listen to yourself. 8. Run your business like a business. Far too many entrepreneurs run their business like an extension of their personal finances. Bad idea. Very bad idea. Construct the right business entity and keep it separate from your personal life. 9. Know your finances inside and out. If you don’t know your revenues, expenses, capital requirements, profits (gross and net), debt, cash flow, and effective tax rate – among other things – you’re asking for trouble. Big trouble. 10. Always make sure there is and will be enough cash in the bank. Period. The most common business-failure mode, hands down, is running out of cash. If you know you’ve got a cash flow or liquidity problem coming up, fix it now. |

5 THINGS YOU CAN DO AFTER YOUR SERVICE YEAR Some have finished their service year, while others will soon be through and then move on to the next phase of life. This means no more alert from Federal Pocket, PPA (Place of Primary Assignment) or the State Government, like it or not, this is going to happen. But those that are extremely very lucky or those that are vigilant of the present economic trend in Nigeria will strive to succeed. Those that will earnestly search for knowledge and opportunities will also succeed, those that know the dig dong search strategies will eventually find opportunities, those that are ambitious will find a lucrative business to do and those that are lazy will stay at home to realize when they are old. So which category will you belong to after your service year? Many Nigerian graduates still sit back at home or some even tend to join the labour market movement filled with millions of graduates who are also looking for the so called “White collar Job” which in turn is tantamount to unemployment among Nigerian youths. More so, according to the federal ministry of labor and productivity, it was stated that the mandatory NYSC, more than 41% of Nigerian graduates are without employment. The Bureau of Statistics added that over 50% of youths in Nigeria are jobless, while the world bank puts the figure at 56% considering the country’s estimated population of about 167 million and 60 million jobless , these figures are alarming and poses a great threat to the economic growth and development of a Nation with the highest concentration of black people on earth. To avoid being on the negative side of Nigeria situation after service year, there are some things you need to keep your self-doing, which brings about the question, What next after service year? 1. DEVELOP YOURSELF For the first few months after service, most will remain very idle and will have nothing doing. These first few months can be used in the personal development of one’s self. Mentally, Physically, and in all ramification. Pick a skill and learn more about it, Pick up the books you have been procrastinating to read and read up. There are various books out there that can be used to develop yourself. From inspirational to spiritual to business and lots more. If already have what you are good at, you can as well develop on it. Continue the remaining 4 strategies here; https://corpa.ng/5-things-you-can-do-after-your-service-year/ |
10 WAYS SECOND CLASS LOWER, THIRD CLASS AND PASS GRADUATES CAN INCREASE THEIR CHANCES OF GETTING A GOOD JOB. A lot of emphasis have been placed on the need for students to graduate with stellar grades. I will continue to advise same. It’s common knowledge that most big firms in Nigeria don’t recruit graduates with less than a 2.1. Many graduates with 2.2 or lower are not even given the chance to prove themselves, eventhough some of them may be better than some graduates with higher grades. This is exacerbated by the high unemployment rate in Nigeria. It won’t be a shocking news to know that there are still a few organizations that aren’t even accepting corps members (before the recent policy on posting), graduate interns and contract staff with grades lower than 2.1. But that truth remains that students will continue to graduate with such grades, whether we want it or not. Many finish with such grades for reasons that are entirely avoidable while others are caused by factors seemingly beyond their control. But whatever the reason, they still deserve to live a fulfilled and responsible life. A few have sought my advice as they appear confused after graduating with 2.2. or third class. I have therefore decided to provide some general tips that can help graduates with 2.2 and lower. This is based on personal observation and experiences of others, some of whom I know to have made remarkable successes despite their low grades. Adapt them to your peculiar situation. 1. Work on your mindset – This is the first step towards overcoming the challenge of having a low grade. Accept the reality that it is likely going to be tougher for you out there compared to other graduates and start preparing for it. Know that you will most likely have to prove yourself and work harder than others. Don’t sit and whine peevishly about how life has been unfair to you. Life itself is a challenge. Realize the challenges on time and brace up for it. Don’t waste precious time on regrets and don’t fall into the trap of inferiority complex. 2. Network – Continue Reading Here: https://corpa.ng/10-ways-second-class-lower-third-class-and-pass-graduates-can-increase-their-chances-of-getting-a-good-job/ |
The 10 most common CV mistakes, and how to avoid them Often, your CV is your one shot of impressing a recruiter and securing you an interview for a job you really want. So it’s important that you get it absolutely right. Unfortunately though, talk to any recruiter and they’ll tell you how many potentially good candidates fall at the first job hunting hurdle by making silly but fatal mistakes on their CV. To help ensure you don’t make any little – but costly – errors, we look at 10 of the biggest CV mistakes, and explain how you can avoid them. 1) Including irrelevant personal information On average, recruiters spend just 6 seconds looking at CVs, so you don’t want to clog yours up with irrelevant information that’s not going to help your application – and may cause them to miss the really juicy contents. So, unless it’s directly relevant to the position you’re applying for, leave out details like your religion, political preferences, height, weight and the story about the time you met Daniel Craig. 2) Hiding important information Just as you need to declutter your CV by leaving out anything irrelevant, it’s vital to highlight the key points that may help swing an interview for a particular job. So think about the design of your CV and ways you can bring important details to the fore, for example by putting key achievements in bullet points or bolding your previous job titles. In such a relationship one partner suffers emotional, social and intimate neglect. Today Corpa has highlighted some signs to help you confirm that you’re in a bad relationship. Too bad some people do know but can’t walk out, hoping things would change someday … OYO. Here we go. 1. Your partner doesn’t challenge you. Living in a partnership ideally includes a coming together of mutual goals. If you challenge your partner to be a better person by accomplishing their goals, but your partner doesn’t support your dreams, it might be a sign that they don’t deserve you. 2. Your partner is a liar. When you’ve lost the bond of trust that you had with your partner, it’s hard to get it back. Whether they said something untrue or they didn’t follow through on what they promised, your faith in them has changed. While it’s not impossible to get it back with time, losing trust could be a sign that your partner doesn’t deserve you. Lessons from the Richest Man in Babylon | 7 ways to have money Ways to have money What can we learn from a man from ancient Babylon? We have summarized 7 lessons of the book, to fill your empty bag and have money. The world changes, life changes, and often what worked a year ago now has no use. However, there are things that do not change over time. There are universal rules that remain intact to this day. The richest man in Babylon shares with us 7 rules to fill your empty bag. Try to understand the process and in the end I will share my action plan based on these 7 rules, which will help you increase your wealth. Let's go for them. 7 Ways to Fill an Empty Bag 1. Start filling your bag Of every 10 coins you are earning, keep one and spend only 9 of them. You will soon see how fast your savings pocket grows. With this, the richest man in Babylon wants to tell you that you must save part of your income. At least 10% of your profit! However, if for now it is impossible to save a tenth of your income starts with a 3, or 5% and gradually you will get up to 10%. The most important thing is - learn to save and make it a habit. This is the first step to accumulate wealth. 2. Control your expenses How can I save if all I earn is not enough to meet my needs? First try to reduce and control your expenses. This means that you need to eliminate unnecessary expenses, only to spend on things that are important. Do you think you have nowhere to save and that all your expenses are necessary? There is a truth that says: If you do not do something to avoid it, the expenses we call mandatory always grow in proportion to our income. Do not confuse your needs with your desires, because it is not the same! By making this difference, you will also find the money you can save. 3. Make your money work for you. When you have already accumulated some money, instead of spending it, invest it. Make every coin you save produces, works for you, that generates interest. What's more, the income generated by your money (children of your money) should also work for you, as well as the children of your children of income. In this way the money multiplies rapidly. Emmanuel Akpe Launched A Site To Make Your NYSC Year More Bearable - Konbini.com Every young Nigerian can agree that the most stressful year of their lives was brought to them courtesy of NYSC – from the stress of shopping for camp kits to the hassle of getting accommodation in a completely strange town (after your attempt to 'work' your posting failed). Well, in a bid to make life a tad easier for the never-ending stream of incoming corp members all around Nigeria, Emmanuel Akpe – along with Prince Anayo and Joseph Emeka – launched the brilliant Corpa, just over a year ago Corpa is a platform aimed at solving the pressing challenges of corps members before, during and after their stressful service year. On the platform, corp members can purchase camp kits, get accommodation, book transport options, get extra jobs, get quality news, trade properties used during their service year and get directions to navigate the states they get posted to. About what inspired him to create Corpa, Emmanuel said on the website: "Our mission is very simple: ensure a stress-free service year and beyond." So, if you're an incoming corp member, are currently serving or know anyone that just started their service year, send them over to Corpa immediately. http://www.konbini.com/ng/lifestyle/emmanuel-akpe-launched-a-site-to-make-that-nysc-year-more-bearable/ https://corpa.ng/emmanuel-akpe-launched-a-site-to-make-your-nysc-year-more-bearable-konbini-com/ |
I know you must be wondering how in the world will it be possible to save your meagre allawee! Don’t worry, this piece will help you achieve this and more. By way of introduction, I want to make you understand that money management is more important than money itself! This means that, even if your allowance is increased to 100k, if you cannot manage your money effectively, you will end up asking for an increase again. See your allowance as a big money even if it is chicken change to you, assume it’s a huge sum and spend wisely because this money can earn you good fortune. Here are the ways to you can save your allowance and live financially free throughout your service year: 1. Set a saving goal: Set a target on the amount you want to save monthly from your allowance. It could be 5,000, 8,000 or 10,000. Do the calculation yourself and see how much you’ll earn during your service year. You can even save beyond 10000 if you are posted to a village where the cost of living is minimal. 2. Understand the different between want and need: that you want something does not mean you need it at the time. After receiving the first allowance some corpers will fund irrelevant things like expensive (more than half of their allowance) phone, shoes, iPhone out of the allowance. There is nothing wrong with this but before going for these these things, Think! (Will this stuff be an asset or liability) if it will serve as an asset, good! Go for it. If otherwise ignore it and discipline yourself. It is a known fact that as you grow older your toy becomes expensive but you need to be careful and make good use of your scale of preference. 3. Control your eating habit: don’t eat anyhow, eating from a canteen where a plate of food is say 200 and you don’t cook, you will eat all your allowance there. If l assume you eat twice in a day that is 400 per day for a month you have spent 12000 on feeding alone. You are left with 7800 and there are other needs. So buy food stuffs, stove, pot etc with your first or your next allowance. If you don’t know how to cook, that is not a crime, meet your mates and they’ll put you through and you’ll see it as an opportunity to learn. An army barrack had four soldiers guarding a concrete slab in front of the barracks at all time. Different commanders came and went but the tradition remained; the soldiers changed shifts guarding the slab. After 80 years, a new commander was assigned to the barracks. One of the things he did was to ask why things were done the way they were. When he asked why soldiers were guarding the slab, he was told, We've always done it this way. It's our tradition. Our former commanders instructed us to do that. The commander was bent on finding out the reason for this practice. He went to the Archives to look for answers and came across a document that had the explanation. The document was very old. It had instructions written by one of the retired commanders who had even passed away. The new commander learnt that over 80 years ago, the barracks wanted to build a platform where events could be performed. When the concrete slab was laid, wild animals walked over it at night before the slab could dry. The soldiers would fix it the next morning but when evening came the same thing would happen. So the commander ordered that four soldiers should guard the concrete slab for three weeks to allow it to dry. The following week the commander was transferred to handle another assignment elsewhere, and a new commander was brought in. The new commander found the routine and continued to enforce it without asking any question. And since then, every other commander that came did the same. Thus, eighty years later; soldiers continued guarding the concrete slab. An assignment that was ordinarily designed to last just three weeks. . . 80yrs of ignorance with hard labour has passed. Are you carrying on obsolete beliefs, attitudes and traditions that were relevant to certain people or a certain time? What is your opinion about yourself, people of a different race, politics, certain business opportunities, new products etc .? You might just be guarding a concrete slab! Without deviation from the norm, progress is not possible (Ignorance can make you work hard without progress). Think about it. |
