Business / Re: An Open Letter To Zenith Bank by count(m): 12:42am On Dec 23, 2016
It was very interesting to see that you don't need so much money to open an account now. It was one of the things that turned me off initially from the bank, glad that's been fixed. As for customer service, that one is a problem everywhere, i think employers should pay more attention to this aspect of things and create a means of checks and balance for customer care agents.

Politics / Nigerians React To 2017 Budget, Express Confidence On Buhari’s Economic Policies by count(m): 12:00pm On Dec 15, 2016
Some stakeholders and economic experts in Borno on Wednesday, expressed mixed feelings over the 2017 budget presented by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that some said they were confident about the president’s political will, others predicted a rubust economic outlook in 2017, with drastic economic reforms imminent.
Malam Abdullahi Gana, a civil servant, said the 2016 budget had not yielded much positive results.

“What particular project has been carried out with the 2016 budgetary figures. The citizens haven’t felt the benefits of this year’s budgetary dispensations and are very hungry.

“They cannot find the time to listen or read about 2017 figures when that of 2016 hasn’t helped their lives.

“The government must find a way to circulate money in the ecoñomý so that it gets to the impoverished and hungry citizens,”Gana said.

“President Buhari said the 2017 budget would contain proposals and packages that would lead Nigeria out of the present economic recession.

“We are glad that most of the government policies are targeted at reducing unemployment and poverty, and wealth creation.

“The social intervention programme of N500 billion in the 2017 Budget would go along way to cushion the hardship of Nigerians,” he said.

Bulama Baba, another civil servant, said the effort of the government to diversify the economy was very commendable.

“By declaring that the economy must be diversified, the president has said it all; that is his economic policy and the direction of his government.

“It is left for those in the business environment to change the way business is done, to turn around agriculture, mining, local production of the basic needs of the Nigerian people.

“Come to think of it afterall what is budgeting and how does it affect the welfare of the people.

“Budgets are just guidelines in spending if you have and want to spend or proposals.

“In 2016, the government made a projection (budget)on income and expenditure based on a certain amount of crude sales.

“Unfortunately, that is not realisable because of obvious reasons, fall in crude price which accounts for 80% of governments revenue.

“That has already created a gap and it means readjustment to give more attention to priority areas.”

Malam Muhammad Ciroma said if all proposals that the president presented in the assembly would be executed with integrity, Nigeria would have no cause to be broke.

“It is no doubt that the PMB government has made significant gains in terms of governance and transparency in the oil sector.

“The government must therefore monitor effectiveness of operations at the refineries and show a readiness to tackle difficult issues, especially the Niger Delta militants.”

Mr Muhammad Askira, a lecturer at Ramat Poltytechnic, said: “By what ensued in the 2016 budget, it has brought out the fact that budgets were never wholistically prepared in this country for anything at all.

“It was cut and paste actually, nobody cares so long as money will be made available to be shared, with no accounting procedures followed and budget monitoring non existent.

“Supposing there was no change in government from PDP to APC, you and I would never have known the inadequacies in running the government of Nigeria or any government before, for that matter.

“It was just a bandwagon; people were carried along to ‘eat’ what was offered them and no quetions asked.

“The onus (is) on this administration to put things rightly in place and do things the right way is enough exercise to last it through its first four years,”Askira said.

However, Mr Friday Nwadinobi, a resident of Gwange quarters, said polarisation of the country along so many fault lines was affecting governance.

“The loyalty any leader gets from the civil servants or subordinates depends on ethno religious beliefs or alignment.

“Saboteurs are everywhere. And for a governmemt that has clearly declared war on corruption, when even the head of an arm of government"

Politics / Minimum Wage Will Be Increased In 2017 – Ngige by count(m): 7:52am On Dec 14, 2016
The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige has said the Federal Government will increase workers salaries in 2017.

Ngige also said the increase in salary which will be implemented by the Buhari administration will be different from that of any other government in Nigeria.

The minister also revealed that the pay rise, when announced, will be implemented by the public and private sector.

Ngige said this while speaking to newsmen at an interactive session in Anambra state on Tuesday, December 13, 2016.

He said the “minimum wage is a constitutional issue and is in the exclusive list.

“The Nigerian workers are entitled to a review of their pay under the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“The various committees handling this matter are all working hard to realise the objective. Some are at the final stages of their work.”

It will be recalled that Ngige had said labour has a legitimate right to call for wage increase, revealing that the Federal Government is considering the demand by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) for the minimum wage to be increased to N56,000.

“The other day, labour requested increased wages for workers and they have only done what they are supposed to do. Therefore, nobody will quarrel with them. At the appropriate time, we shall all sit down because what the labour is asking is for the re-negotiation of an existing Collective Bargain Agreement (CBA). And every CBA-based agreement is subject to re-negotiation at any given time that any of the partners requests it.”

Adding that “It is wrong for people to think that whenever the labour makes such a demand, the nation is boiling. The labour in Nigeria has for the first time met a labour-friendly government under President Muhammadu Buhari.

“The government has put machinery in motion as we speak because I have got a letter as the Minister of Labour and Employment for my advice. We shall advise the government the way such a tripartite negotiation will be handled so that everybody will be satisfied without any industrial unrest.”

Investment / MMM: The Grinch That Trolled Christmas by count(m): 10:55pm On Dec 13, 2016
Just when Rivers PDP and the rest of the wailing wailers would have been able to state vehemently that it is President Muhammad Buhari or at least Rotimi Amaechi that stole Christmas, MMM comes along and trolls the entire holiday. If it is one thing that binds us together as Nigerians, we are collectively suffering from a latest calamity.

Nigerians are passionate about their holiday celebrations, and few if any are as important as the Christmas season to many. Spiritually, socially and economically, the holiday is an important date, falling at the end of the year and in close proximity to the New Year. It is a long period of rest, relaxation, connection with God, family, and community in a different mind frame as many take the scores of the preceding year and project their aspirations for the future.
Along comes a cataclysmic occurrence like the freezing of MMM accounts where a huge chunk of Nigerian’s have had their commonwealth to the hundreds of millions, if not billions of Naira ‘frozen’ for the time being. How apt. In the microwave that is Lagos, many Nigerians are to enjoy a freezing Christmas.

The MMM Promoters assert that it is only for a temporary period and that payments would be made after the temporary freeze. A message also popped up on one of their affiliate social media handles which asserts that MMM always warned Nigerians not to be greedy and invest more than they could afford.

Truthfully Nigerians were warned, even the Federal Government did not fall asleep in its duties in this regard. Obviously, they care about policing our money and that money would have been better spent paying taxes or depositing in banks that pay taxes.

Some banks were so perplexed by the MMM fiasco that it warned its employee not to invest in the scheme or risk punishment. An official of the bank, speaking in anonymity, stated that the management of the bank started spooling employee’s accounts to ensure none of its staff violated the policy, by mobilizing their deposits to MMM.

However many adherents to the scheme are not deterred even by the latest freezing and have vowed to continue to dabble into the scheme whenever the freeze is lifted. For these types of Nigerians there is no cure, they need a get rich quick scheme to attach themselves to, especially due to the economic climate in which they find themselves. Banks have laid off thousands, oil prices are at their lowest and there seems to be an absence of joy in Nigeria as inflation continues to skyrocket and all economic indices point south. Even a prosperity preacher recently said Nigerians should brace themselves for the worst is yet to come for world people.

There is a reason why Warren Buffet, the world’s most successful investor has never contributed a dime to a scheme like MMM. He prefers to tender his capital to companies that generate revenues from providing an actual product and service. He would never place a penny in a pipe dream because pipes are prone to clogging.

Sports / I Did Not Intentionally Drink Alcholol – Yaya Toure by count(m): 2:06pm On Dec 13, 2016
Manchester City midfielder, Yaya Toure has been banned from driving for 18 months and fined £54,000 ($68,500, 64,600 euros) for drink driving, he said on Facebook on Tuesday.

The 33-year-old Manchester City midfielder insisted though he imbibed the alcohol by accident.

Toure, a four-time African player of the Year and a member of the Ivory Coast side that won the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, is a Muslim.
“Over the last two weeks there has been some confusion as to why I was charged with drink driving, as it is well known that I am a Muslim and do not drink,” wrote Toure, who was stopped last month while driving in east London and found to be over the limit.

“I have always refused alcohol. Anyone who knows me or follows football will have seen me refuse champagne for Man of the Match performances because of my commitment to my religion.”

Toure, who retired from international football in September, said the court had also accepted he had not intentionally drunk alcohol but had nevertheless punished him according to the law. Toure did not disclose how the alcohol got into his system.

“The matter has now been resolved in court on Monday,” wrote Toure, who only recently returned to first team action with Manchester City after a stand-off with manager Pep Guardiola caused by his agent.

“As I was above the permitted limit when tested on the night, I decided not to challenge the charge.

“However, it was important to me that I told the court that I had not intentionally consumed alcohol. The judge in his sentencing remarks accepted that I had not been intentionally drinking.

“Drink driving is a serious crime and even though I was not intentionally consuming alcohol I accept the ban and fine and I would like to apologise for this situation.”

Politics / Obanikoro Returns N30m To EFCC, Vows To Return N450m In 2017 by count(m): 7:33am On Nov 30, 2016
Former Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, has returned another N30m to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission thus bringing the total sum he has returned so far to N134m.

It will be recalled that Obanikoro some weeks ago was released on bail and as part of the conditions for his release he was said to have agreed to return N480m out of the N4.7 billion which the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC said he will be made to account for. Obanikoro during the release he returned N100m and has pledged to return N480m.
According to the Vanguard, N30m returned was as part of the N4.7 billion traced to firms linked to him

“Obanikoro came on Monday and presented a draft of about N30m. Initially we did not want to collect it because it is small compared to what he is supposed to have given us. However, the legal department advised us to collect it.

“About N450m is remaining and Obanikoro has promised to pay the rest in 2017. He will also be reporting at our office every two weeks,” the top source revealed.

On arrival to Nigeria last month, Obanikoro had revealed in his statement to the EFCC, that he gave Fayose N2.23 billion and $5,377,000 in cash while his associate, Mr. Abiodun Agbele, got N1.3 billion.

Obanikoro admitted that the N1.3 billion was flown to Akure airport in two chartered flights for delivery to Agbele. The former minister said he also gave N1.7 billion to a former Osun Deputy Governor, Senator Iyiola Omisore, but did not say what the money was meant for.

The money was sourced from the $2.1billion meant for arms purchase at the ONSA. But Fayose has spit fire over Obanikoro’s revelations and accused the EFCC of bringing him from the U.S under an arrangement to give him a ‘soft landing’ and use him to nail him (Fayose) and others named in the arms scam.

Foreign Affairs / South Korean President Park Offers To Resign by count(m): 12:34pm On Nov 29, 2016
Embattled South Korean President Park Geun Hye on Tuesday, said she was prepared to resign as president but would let the parliament decide on her exact political fate.

Speaking in a televised address in Seoul, Park added that she would be prepared to let the lawmakers decide how long she should remain in office, if necessary.
“I will leave it up to the National Assembly to determine my fate, including the reduction of my term in office,” Park said.

The president made the statement days after hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets demanding her impeachment.

Park, whose approval rating dropped to 4 per cent last week, is accused of having allowed close friend, Choi Soon Sil to meddle in state affairs and giving her access to official state documents.

Choi has also been indicted on a string of charges including abuse of authority and attempted fraud.

South Korea’s largest opposition party, the Democratic Party, along with two smaller parties is taking steps to begin impeachment proceedings against Park over the scandal. (dpa/NAN)

Politics / How I Deposited US Dollars For Justice Ajumogobia – Witness by count(m): 8:14am On Nov 29, 2016
The Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos on Monday heard a witness describe how foreign currency was moved from Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia’s chambers and deposited into her account in Diamond Bank.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Mr Ademola Oshodi was testifying at the ongoing trial of Ofili-Ajumogobia, a serving Justice of the Federal High Court, and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), alongside Mr Godwin Obla.
The duo, who are being tried by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for alleged corruption, have been jointly charged with two counts of perverting the course of justice.

Obla was charged with additional two-counts of offering gratification in the sum of N5million to Ofili-Ajumogobia, a public official, while carrying out her duties as a judge.

Ofili-Ajumogobia, however, faces a 26-count charge of unlawful enrichment, taking property by a public officer, corruption by a public officer, forgery and giving false information to an official of the EFCC.

The accused persons both denied all the charges.

The EFCC alleges that between 2012 and 2015 Ajumogobia received a total of $788,000 from various sources into her Diamond Bank Account with number, 0032091183.

While being led in evidence by counsel to the EFCC, Mr Rotimi Oyedepo, Oshodi told the court that he met Ofili-Ajumogobia at her chambers at the Federal High Court when he opened an account for her with the bank.

Oshodi, a Branch Manager with Diamond Bank Plc, is the account officer for Ofili-Ajumogobia.

The banker alleged that he often visited the justice’s chambers and also her home whenever she needed his services to make such deposits which was mostly in dollars.

“I used to meet the judge in her chambers and sometimes in her home, where I’d receive the foreign currency, which was U.S. dollars to deposit into her bank account.

“I introduced one Abba Said, a Bureau de Change operative to her when there was a need to change the dollars to naira.

“This mostly happens when she was not comfortable with a particular transaction.

“There were instances where the deposits exceeded the maximum amount for an individual account, when such instances occur, I pay the maximum amount into her account.

“I then deposit the remaining cash into my account which is paid into her account in subsequent days,” Oshodi told the packed courtroom.

Counsel to Ofili-Ajumogobia, Mr Olawole Akoni (SAN), however, raised objections when EFCC attempted to tender his client’s account statements as evidence on the grounds that he had not reviewed the bank statements.

“The first defendant has been in incarceration since November 10. She needs adequate time and facility to defend herself. I humbly seek an adjournment,’’ Akoni said.

Supporting his request for adjournment, lawyer to Obla, Mr Ifedayo Adedipe (SAN), also said the second defendant had been in incarceration since November 8.

“Given the circumstances in which we had our meetings, it was not even possible to prepare adequately for trial.

“I will like to request for an adjournment so that we can make judicious use of the time to prepare adequately for trial,” Adedipe said.

Justice Hakeem Oshodi in granting an adjournment said; “for the purpose of fair hearing, the court will accede to the request for adjournment of this trial.

“The case is adjourned to January 9, 2017 for continuation of trial,’’ Oshodi said. (NAN)

Travel / Nigerians To Pay VAT On International Passports – FIRS by count(m): 10:10pm On Nov 28, 2016
The Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) on Monday said soon, Nigerians might begin to show evidence of tax payment before obtaining their passports.

Mr Tunde Fowler said this at the 136th meeting of the Joint Tax Board which had the theme: “Increased Inter-Agency Co-operation to Enhance Tax Compliance and Optimise Revenue Collection” in Abuja.

“We did take a position and I believe it would be implemented in the very near future that before you get any services from the immigration department: renewal of passports etc, you’d have to show that you are a tax payer.

“These things are normal all over the world, in an effort to serve Nigerians and Nigeria better.

“People believe that payment of tax is a burden and I’ll repeat that you only pay tax on income and profits.

“So if you reside in Nigeria and you are benefiting from being a Nigerian resident, it is only fair that you contribute to the system that makes you enjoy that standard of living.’’

He said the FIRS set a target to increase the individual taxpayer data base by 10 million by December 31.

“I’m glad with our co-operation; we’ve been able to attain 30 per cent of that. We’ve been able to get three million individual taxpayers across the nation.

“I’d like to congratulate Kano State for leading the pack by increasing the database by 944,000 followed by Lagos with 306,000 then Kaduna and Plateau,” he said.

The Corps Marshall of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Boboye Oyeyemi, lamented that the FRSC was being owed N700 million for number plates production.

He also decried the high rate of fake documentation at ports, saying “if we can strengthen inter-agency collaboration, we’ll get more results now that the focus is on IGR”.

The Chairman of the Abia State Board of Internal Revenue, Mr Udochukwu Ogbonna, urged the revenue generating agencies to co-operate digitally to ensure success and curb corruption.

Also, the Chairman of the Edo State Internal Revenue Service, Mr Oseni Elamah, said “the FIRS should have a digital one-stop-shop accessible to all partners”.

Some revenue generating agencies on Monday met in Abuja to curtail loss, stop corruption and increase proceeds to government coffers in 2017.

The event brought together all states internal revenue service chairmen and the bosses of the Nigeria Customs Service, and the Nigeria Immigration Service. (NAN)

Business / How Psquare Makes Almost N200 Million Every Year From Uber by count(m): 7:04am On Nov 27, 2016
The most successful musical group in Africa, PSquare comprising of twins Peter and Paul Okoye are also reportedly extremely savvy businessmen.

The duo have interests that span real estate, media and from what Herald Weekend gathered, transportation.
According to a source in Uber, the duo have over 35 vehicles plying the streets of Lagos to aid the transportation needs of Africa’s busiest and most populous city.

By our calculations, the average Uber driver makes N100,000 on average each week. With 35 cars on the beat, this means the Okoyes are grossing approximately N182 million from the transport arm of their businesses alone.

Recently Africa’s richest man, Alhaji Aliko Dangote paid the twins a visit at the mansion owned by Peter and Lola Okoye.

Perhaps Peter was giving Alhaji some tips on how to make it big in the transportation sector, or maybe negotiating some cheap petrol rates for his fleet in order to maximize profits.

Politics / Court Refuses Arrest Of Ladoja Over N4.7billion Scandal by count(m): 3:22pm On Nov 25, 2016
A Federal High Court in Lagos on Friday refused to issue a warrant for the arrest of a former governor of Oyo State, Sen.Rasheed Ladoja, following his presence in court.

At the last adjourned date on Nov. 21, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had urged the court to issue a bench warrant against Ladoja for failing to appear in court, to answer to a N4.7 billion money laundering charges preferred against him.
Ladoja’s counsel, Mr Bolaji Onilenla in his reactions to the application for a warrant of arrest, had told the court that he was not aware that the business of the day was for arraignment.

He had argued that this was so because there was a pending appeal before the Supreme Court.

Onilenla informed the court that after the decision of the Court of Appeal, Ladoja had changed his counsel, and then, filed an appeal at the Supreme Court.

He said that neither the accused nor their counsel was served with any court summons to appear in court.
Onilenla had also challenged the prosecutorial powers of the prosecutor on the grounds that the fiat to prosecute was exclusively given to Fetus Keyamo.

He said that such a fiat could not be transferred to any other person in his chambers.

The counsel also disclosed that the Supreme Court had earlier dismissed Ladoja’s appeal pursuant to Order 6; Rule 3 of the Procedure Rules, but that the application had been filed to restore the appeal.

He added that to continue with the trial would amount to showing disrespect to the apex court and it would be an infringement on the rights of the accused.

The trial judge, Justice Mohammed Idris, delivering his ruling on the issue on Friday, held that he would not make any orders as to arrest since the accused was present in court.

The judge also turned down the request of defence counsel for a stay of proceedings pending the outcome of an appeal challenging the prosecutorial powers of the commission under the Money Laundering Act.

According to the judge, the request was against the provisions of Section 306 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) 2015 which allows speedy hearing of criminal cases.

Similarly, Justice Idris also dismissed the objection of defence counsel, challenging the appearance of the prosecution’s counsel, Olabisi Oluwayemi (from Festus Keyamo’s chambers).

The court, thereafter, fixed Dec. 14 for arraignment.

The EFCC had in November 2008 arraigned Ladoja along with his former aide, Chief Waheed Akanbi, before Justice Ramat Mohammed, who was then serving at the Lagos Division of the Federal High Court.

The anti-graft agency alleged that the two men conspired to convert properties and resources derived from an alleged illegal act, with the intention of concealing their illicit origin.

The anti-graft agency also alleged that Ladoja used N42 million out of the proceeds to purchase an Armoured Land Cruiser Jeep, and remitted about 600,000 pounds to one Bimpe Ladoja in London.

Ladoja and Akanbi had both pleaded not guilty to the charges at the trial court, and had urged the court to quash them.

The lower court had refused the prayer to quash the charges.

Dissatisfied, Ladoja had appealed against the decision of the Federal High Court.

But, the Appellate Court in its judgment delivered by Justice Sidi Bage had disallowed the appeal and ordered the former governor to continue his trial at the lower court.

Bage in his lead judgment, which was unanimously adopted by two other justices, had held that the EFCC had statutory powers to prosecute under Money Laundering Prohibition Act 2004. (NAN)

Foreign Affairs / Trump’s Emergence, The Rise Of Nationalism And Failure Of The Western Media by count(m): 1:08pm On Nov 25, 2016
The upheavals in Middle East had a profound effect on the American elections. It is easy to figure it out; the Americans realized the Obama government and its liberal allies in Europe have supervised policies that led to the killing of an American ambassador in Libya, destroyed Syria, led to massive immigration that now threatened their infrastructure, and has led to the rise of radical extremist groups like ISIL that now threatened their lives. Yet the media continues to promote these failed policies, even blaming Russia for the escalation of violence. Even the conservative media like Fox has joined in supporting this flawed international outlook. Things got bad as the American government continued to antagonize Russia, so much that many feared a third world war was imminent.

If the city dwellers, who depend on TV and social media could be fooled, the Americans in the countryside could not. Many of these people have their children in the American military and they know what is going on. Why do you think most of the Military officers supported Trump?
Having analysed the first part of the puzzle above, which is the external dimension, I need to unravel the internal dimension. The internal forces that led to the emergence of Trump has to do with this four-letter word: Jobs.

When Donald Trump announced to automobile sector workers in Michigan that he would slap a 45% tax on any American company that takes jobs to Mexico or any other country, he was relating with an issue of serious concern to them. The rise of globalization has threatened these non-skilled and semi-skilled workers who had depended on mass labour sector jobs.

Globalization has left open the doors for millions of immigrants from Mexico, Asia and Africa, who will gladly do these jobs for a lower pay. American companies are also taking their manufacturing to China, India, and other countries where labour is cheap, as free trade opens doors that were previously closed. All these have led to a conservative, Nationalistic emotion among white, working class Americans, who think their country has been taken away from them. No wonder Trump aptly declared to them: “we will take back our country.”

How did the media fail to pay attention to the yearnings of this silent majority? The truth is that the media knew about it but decided to ignore them in the hope that they would succeed in promoting a ‘noble’ ideology to the people rather than expressing the yearnings of a section of the public

The emergence of Trump has less to do with Trump than a rebellion against the Liberal establishment. It is important to note that this is not an exclusive event. The people in Europe are also tired of liberalism and political correctness. The rise in prominence of right wing politicians in Greece, Germany, France and the UK, and the Brexit referendum should have warned the politicians and the media in the US.

The reason why events in the United States are so important to the rest of the world is because Globalization has carried the American cultural influence to the rest of the world. Also, American and Western policies affect many countries far away from them. For instance, American policies in Libya and the Sahel affect Nigeria’s fight against Boko Haram.

As the world tries to come to terms with Donald Trump’s presidency, many events will unfold across the world in the next few years and many of them are predictable. On the morning of Trump’s victory, leader of the French far right, Marine Le Pen declared: “their world is crumbling, ours is just being built”. I believe she was talking about the rise of nationalism and populism.

Nationalistic movements will rise in Europe and dominate politics. Marine Le Pen will become president of France. Scotland and Northern Ireland will renew agitation to leave the United Kingdom. Italy, Greece and Germany will see more conservative, anti-immigration movements take over. Angela Merkel has just declared her intention to run for a fourth term. She will face a stiff opposition next year.

Western dominance in Middle East issues will gradually yield to Russian and Chinese competition as the United States reduces interference in local issues. The wars in Yemen and Syria will end within six months as the Saudi Coalition and the rebels lose American support. Israel will tear the 2-state idea into shreds and pursue a single state that will eventually swallow Palestine in the distant future.

In Nigeria, foreign support for the government will dwindle but foreign interference will also be reduced. The Nationalistic fire that will sweep across Europe will inspire ethnic feelings in African countries and may lead to intensity in the activities of separatist movements like MASSOB and IPOD. I foresee an intensified clamour for Biafra.

In the United States, racial tension will rise for a while but will eventually improve. However, immigration will be strict and millions of illegal immigrants will find themselves on their way home. The US will lose a lot of influence because it will be more isolated but its citizens will become richer.

Perhaps, Trump’s era will not be as bleak as it seems.

Foreign Affairs / Green Party Raises $4.5m For Recount In 3 US States by count(m): 7:45am On Nov 25, 2016
The Green party candidate in the U.S. presidential election, Jill Stein, has announced that the party would file for a recount of votes in the battleground states of Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania.

Stein, who suspected electoral fraud in the election, said the recount would check the accuracy of the machine-counted vote tallies in these states in order to ensure the integrity of the election.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Stein/Baraka Green Party Campaign launched the votes recount funding effort on Wednesday.

NAN also reports that by Thursday, Stein/Barak campaign has already raised about $4,513, 852; $23million, more than the target of $4.5 million needed to file the recount cost for two of the states, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin and pay the fees for lawyers.

Jill Stein, who is leading the campaign, said between 6 and 7 million dollars would be needed to cover the entire costs including filing for recount in the third state-Michigan.

The deadline for filing for a recount in Wisconsin is this Friday, November 25, at a cost of $1.1 million, while the filing fees and deadlines for Pennsylvania and Michigan respectively are 0.5 million dollars by November 28 and 0.6 million dollars by November 30.

The Stein/Baraka campaign, along with election integrity advocates, has embarked on massive fundraising effort to obtain the needed funds before Friday afternoon.

“Congratulations on meeting the recount costs for Wisconsin! Raising money to pay for the first round so quickly is a miraculous feat and a tribute to the power of grassroots organising.

“Now that we have completed funding Wisconsin’s recount (which is due on Friday), we have begun to tackle the funding for Pennsylvania’s recount (due Monday).

“Then we will focus on raising funds for Michigan’s recount (due Wednesday),” Stein said.

NAN reports that there have been concerns over the credibility of the election in the battleground states where Hillary Clinton lost to Donald Trump by about one per cent.

The concerns have also heightened recently as Clinton’s lead over Trump in popular votes has surpassed two million as additional votes are being counted in the presidential election.

If the elections are recounted and results found to have been compromised, it could affect Trump’s election due at Electoral College on December 19.

NAN reports that in the U.S, where the difference between two candidates is 0.5 per cent or less, government funds the recount, but where it is more than one per cent, the recount is funded by the filing candidate.

“After a divisive and painful presidential race, reported hacks into voter and party databases and individual email accounts are causing many Americans to wonder if our election results are reliable.

“These concerns need to be investigated before the 2016 presidential election is certified. We deserve elections we can trust,” Stein insisted.

The Stein/Baraka campaign had noted that the election was surrounded by hacks adding, the use of systems that have been demonstrated to be easily hacked should concern every American.

“Some of the machines used in Wisconsin, have been banned in California after they were shown to be highly vulnerable to hacking and malicious reprogramming, due to the lack of security features.

“Leading election security experts have been calling for exactly this sort of recount as a critical safeguard against cyber-attacks.”

The Green Party Platform called for “publicly-owned, open source voting equipment and deploy it across the nation to ensure high national standards, performance, transparency and accountability.”

“It also called for the use of verifiable paper ballots; and institute mandatory automatic random precinct recounts to ensure a high level of accuracy in election results.”

“Election integrity experts have independently identified Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin as states where “statistical anomalies” raised concerns.

“Our effort to recount votes in those states is not intended to help Hillary Clinton.

“These recounts are part of an election integrity movement to attempt to shine a light on just how untrustworthy the U.S. election system is,” it said.

NAN recalls that Trump had won the November 8 presidential election based on the Electoral College while Clinton, who lost the election, led Trump by over two million popular votes as at Wednesday. (NAN)

Politics / Nigeria's History Is Incomplete Without Atiku- APC by count(m): 10:03pm On Nov 24, 2016
The All Progressives Congress (APC) says Nigeria’s history will be incomplete without reference to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s contributions to the social, political and economic development of the country.

Mr Edegbe Odemwinge, APC Assistant Director of Publicity, stated this on Thursday in Abuja in the party’s felicitation statement to Atiku as he turns 70 on Friday, Nov. 25.

He applauded Atiku for his solid contributions to the growth of the APC and for entrenching democracy in the country.

“Our great party, the APC celebrates with your Excellency on the occasion of your 70th birthday.

“Over the years, you have proven yourself as a democrat, detribalised leader, elder statesman, successful businessman, political icon and philanthropist,’’ Odemwinge quoted Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, the APC National Chairman, as saying.

He said the party particularly commends Atiku’s investment in the country’s education sector and other business ventures.

According to him, the investments had touched lives positively and generated employment for many Nigerians.

Oyegun added that the APC attest to Akitu’s solid contributions to its growth and wished him many more happy, healthy and fulfilled years of service to the party and country. (NAN)

Politics / I Can`t Do Without ‘garri’ And Dried Fish – Senator by count(m): 4:50pm On Nov 24, 2016
Sen. Solomon Olamilekan (Lagos West Senatorial District) on Thursday said that having soaked “garri’’ and dried fish as a meal gave him more satisfaction than any other food.

Olamilekun, a member of the Senate Committee on Finance, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that garri and dried fish was his favourite food.
“I don’t know why I just like garri and dried fish, it gives me the kind of satisfaction I can`t describe, I just feel good after having it.

“Some people would ask me, why would a senator like garri and not all these expensive stuffs? and the answer I give is that it makes me feel great.

“It is so amazing that sometimes when I am having stomach upset, and I take garri everything disappears within minutes. I think garri is best suited for my body,’’ he said.

Olamilekan stated that he preferred mostly local foods to foreign delicacies.

Speaking on his political career and speculations that he intends to contest for the governorship position of his home state Ogun in 2019, Olamilekan did not give a direct answer.

“I am from Ogun state. I visit and interact with my people. It will be an honour to serve them. But we would not make any announcement for now.

“At the right time, we would come out and tell the people. The concentration is on the Senate right now. We are waiting on God to determine our next move,” he said. (NAN)

Foreign Affairs / Clinton’s Lead Over Trump Now Over 2m Popular Votes by count(m): 1:00pm On Nov 24, 2016
Hillary Clinton’s margin in the popular vote against President-elect Donald Trump has surpassed two million, furthering the record for a candidate who lost in the Electoral College.

Hillary Clinton’s national popular vote lead over President-elect Donald Trump has now exceeded two million votes, according to an ongoing count by the Cook Political Report on Wednesday.

Clinton’s vote total is 64,223,986 (48.1 per cent of the vote), while Trump’s is 62,206,395 (46.6 per cent), a difference of 2,017,591 votes.

Clinton’s margin in the popular vote against Trump’s as additional votes have been counted in the presidential election, furthered the record for a candidate who lost in the Electoral College.

Much of that lead was generated by California, where Clinton had 3.7 million more votes than Trump in the last totals reported in the state on Tuesday evening.

The Democratic vote was not distributed well enough across the country, however, Trump carried most of the states and prevailed in the Electoral College.

It is the fifth time the winner of the popular vote has lost the election.

The same thing happened in 2000, when then Democratic nominee Al Gore won the popular vote by nearly 544,000 but lost to former president George W. Bush on electoral votes.

This year, Clinton scored large tallies in states like California but Mr Trump won most of the so-called swing states, which ultimately decide the outcome of elections.

The Electoral College system favours candidates who win by a small margin in lots of states over ones that win by a landslide in just a few.

A group of academics, lawyers and data experts are also trying to persuade the Clinton’s team to join their efforts to investigate the results in three states to check if there was foreign computer hacking that manipulated the outcome.

They are curious on why Clinton performed worse in counties that relied on electronic voting machines compared to paper ballots and optical scanners.

The Green Party’s Presidential Candidate, Jill Stein, is also raising funds to request a recount in Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, all won by Trump.

Some Democrats have called for an end to the Electoral College but the U.S. Constitution authorised it and smaller states would likely block its abolition.

Trump, who once called Electoral College a “disaster”, said a popular vote-only system would force candidates to campaign only in bigger states like California, Texas, Florida, and New York.

“I think the popular vote would have been easier in a true sense because you would go to a few places.

“I think that’s the genius of the Electoral College. I was never a fan of the Electoral College until now,” Trump told The New York Times on Tuesday. (NAN/BBC)

Foreign Affairs / Here's What Donald Trump Said In His 1st Thanksgiving Address As President Elect by count(m): 9:36am On Nov 24, 2016
U.S. President-elect, Donald Trump, has called for unity among Americans and urged the citizens to unite and move forward as one country after a bruising political campaign.

Trump said in a video address to mark Thursday’s Thanksgiving Day that the tension of the campaign could not heal overnight.

In the address, which was posted on social media, The president-elect called for the restoration of trust among citizens.

“We are very blessed to call this nation our home and that’s what America is, it is our home.

“It’s where we raise our families, care for our loved ones, look out for our neighbours and live out our dreams.

“It’s my prayer that on this Thanksgiving, we begin to heal our divisions and move forward as one country, strengthened by shared purpose and very common resolve.

“In declaring this National Holiday, President Lincoln called upon Americans to speak with one voice and one heart, that’s just what we have to do.

“We’ve just finished a long and bruising political campaign, emotions are run, tensions just don’t heal overnight; it doesn’t go quickly, unfortunately,” he said.

The president-elect, who said that political campaign was over, added that it was now time to begin a campaign to rebuild the country.

“We have before us the chance now to make history together, to bring real change to Washington, real safety to our cities and real prosperity to our communities, including our inner cities.

“It is so important to me and so important to our country; but to succeed, we must enlist the efforts of our entire nation.

“This historic political campaign is now over but now begins a great national campaign to rebuild our country and to restore the full promise of America for all our people.

“I’m asking you to join me in this effort; it’s time to restore the bond of trust between citizens because when America is unified, there is nothing beyond our reach.

“Let us give thanks for all that we have and let us boldly face the exciting new frontiers that lie ahead,” Trump said in the address.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Thanksgiving Day is a public holiday celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November in the U.S., originating as a harvest festival.

Thanksgiving has been celebrated nationally on and off since 1789, after a proclamation by George Washington.

However, it has been celebrated as a federal holiday every year since 1863, when, during the American Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day.

Lincoln proclaimed it a day of “Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens”, to be celebrated on the last Thursday in November.

Together with Christmas and the New Year, Thanksgiving is a part of the broader holiday season in the U.S. (NAN)

It was a Tuesday. I hated Tuesdays, why? Because we had Salman for Civil Litigation. Why did I hate Salman? Maybe because he has the charisma of a potted plant. Why did I hate potted plants? They’re so damn boring. Why did I hate boredom… you know where this is going right?

It was of no added advantage that the place was so frigging hot! A thousand plus bodies with the attendant body heat was no picnic. The man was saying something about “parties to a suit” I was paying no attention. The girl drooling beside me held more interest; the guy in front of me was fiddling with an i-pad the dude to my left was fighting sleep with little success, and the chic in front of me was day dreaming, her eyes seemed glazed. I wonder what she was thinking about.

Just when I was giving up on life, love and salvation… I saw her. Time slowed and then I started to hear those soft rock tones you hear in the movies, like ‘she will be loved’ by Maroon 5 and like things couldn’t get better, she turned her head. It was like slow motion. The movement of her hair, the supremely bored expression on her face, her eyes, her perfect nose, those lips. God she was perfect!!! The temperature in the room dropped and I broke into a cold sweat. A person beside me joked

“You’re really hot aren’t you?” I ignored him, all my attention was focused on the girl I was looking at. How was it possible that I hadn’t noticed her all this time? As if on cue, Salman decided to let us go on break.

She made to get out of her seat. I was transfixed and only noticed Ibrahim, my friend when he snapped his fingers in my face. I looked up, Ibrahim was a friend I made in law school. Our love for the weirder things in life brought us together and since that fateful day when he came up to me and said

“Excuse me, is that automatic me you’re listening to?” We have been inseparable. He noticed my preoccupation and I felt his grin before I saw it. It stretched from ear to ear and he had that glint in his eyes.

“Hmmm, you like the geh abi?” I could only nod,

“Go follow am word now” Um, yeah, about that. I wasn’t very good at that. I was look able I guess, but definitely not dashing, I had a good command of the English language, but not enough to talk a girl’s pants off. So I was pretty much deficient in that area. I had seen friends do it to varying degrees of success. I wasn’t good with rejection. It felt like defeat and most times I’d just crawl into my space and never come out. So… to talk to this, this, this… Goddess. How was I supposed to do it? She was struggling to get out of her row and as each person got up to allow her space, it seemed like a door was slowly closing. Ibrahim had meanwhile told a couple of mere acquaintances of mine my story and they all seemed to be looking at me. She got out of her row and started moving towards the back of the auditorium which was where I had planted myself. It was now or never

‘Okay, this is it, all the rom-coms you’ve watched must not be in vain’ I said to myself under my breath. She got closer and I decided then that I was going to talk to her, so I stood up, planted myself in her path and said

“Hello”

“Hello”

“Um, I’m sorry I hope you don’t think me an absolute klutz for saying, but I’ve spent the better part of 15minutes asking myself how I was going to talk to you”

“Oh really” That sounded sarcastic, this wasn’t good

“I’m Tolu, what’s your name?” The seconds ticked by and it seemed like forever before she said

“Amina” I breathed a sigh of relief, I think she saw it because she sniggered.

“Um, I’m sorry, but would it be totally weird if I got your BB pin?”

“Why would I want to do that?” oh I had to think fast

“Well, everyday of our lives we meet approximately 40-50 people, we’d never see again who may have impacted our lives in one way or another, I’m just taking my chance” seconds ticked by again. I held my breath. 24 had nothing on this kind of suspense.

“Okay, 24A6B55D” it took all of my willpower not to do a tap dance right there, I could shout at the top of my lungs, I did it!

“Um, but I must warn you, I have a boyfriend” She smiled and walked away. My face fell, the girl was mean, getting me to all dizzying heights and then dropping me. I watched her leave. Ooh, I was going to get her, when I was done she wouldn’t know what hit her.

I was growing obsessed with this whole Amina thing. I couldn’t eat…. Who am I kidding, I could eat, if anything, I ate more than usual as I pondered how I was going to get in between Amina and her faceless boyfriend (I always imagined, he had pimples the size of tomatoes on his face and an especially large one on his nose, making him look like the witches we read about in our picture storybooks). I slept, but in uncomfortable fits that usually had me dreaming of me pushing her boyfriend off a cliff and she running to me telling me he was always mean to her anyways and how I had rescued her from a life of misery. So needless to say it was with great joy and gladness that I picked up the phone to receive a call from my uncle.

My uncle was, well… I use eccentric, others say ‘cuckoo’. He was an extremely brilliant scientist (I know right, Nigeria doesn’t have many of those) who was highly celebrated in the area of math and quantum physics and was a lecturer at Stanford university, California, USA, he was extremely wealthy, but never seemed to look the part. My uncle has been known to answer the door naked, he works on most of his equations in the nude and was divorced because his wife commented that she couldn’t share him with his work. He was my father’s younger brother and though my dad said he accepted him for who he was, it was clear that my uncle freaked him out. Avoided by most, rejected by family, he turned to me as his ‘person’. He taught me all the math I know and our love relationship had started since I was six, when he bought me a planetary model for my birthday. I had grinned and asked

“Uncle, what is this”

“The planet earth is round and revolves round the sun along with the other 9 planets”

“Dele, but there are only 9 planets” my dad countered

“O, egbon, just you wait, there’s another one out there, if not more than one”. My dad had laughed then, but was left slack jawed when NASA announced the discovery of a 10th planet.

My uncle had me solve a pretty complex math problem for Christmas

“But, Dele, he is just a child” my mother would say

“Sister, its never too early to start learning your math” was the reply. I from there developed a love for math and my uncle was heartbroken to learn that I was going to study law. He didn’t talk to me for almost a year after that. I got him equation shaped chocolate cookies as bribe before he spoke to me again. This was the first time I would be hearing from him this year.

“Hi uncle”

“If f(x) equals x-4, then (fof)(3) is equals…” without missing a beat, I said

“-5”

“Ah, my boy. I see you’re still sharp. How are you”

“I’m six uncle, I’m just six” this was in reference to the fact that six is a perfect number, so when we wanted to state that we were great, we said we were six. We could use 28,496 and 8128, but that would just be long.

“When are you coming to see your favorite uncle?”

“Oh uncle, real soon”

We said our goodbyes and I promised myself that I would go and see him that weekend. And then this Idea hits me in the face, what if I could travel back in time and alter the circumstances in which Amina met this her Doctor boyfriend, if he did not meet her in the past it is thus unlikely he would be part of her Present...yeah I know, its all wishful thinking. But yet again, no one ever believed it would be possible to communicate with someone that is a million miles away through both audio and video communications. Even Alexander Graham Bell would be pretty impressed but definitely not surprised at the milestone science has achieved over the years. with that thought in mind, I looked forward to seeing my uncle

So when weekend came, I was more than happy to pack my bags and go to my uncle’s house

to be continued...
