PoliticsElectricity: Thank You President Jonathan, But... by cozimo(op): 12:14pm On Mar 26, 2015
I want to thank President Goodluck Jonathan for slashing electricity tariff by 50 per cent. It again shows he is a listening President.

Recently, I had added my voice to those of other Nigerians through an SOS to President Jonathan published in this newspaper on the astronomical bills being issued from the electricity distribution companies otherwise known as discos to consumers. Even the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria added its own voice to the matter.

President Jonathan acted swiftly, much to the relief of long suffering Nigerians, to direct the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission to reduce the tariff.
But it seems the discos are slashing the bills grudgingly. What the Federal Government intended with the slashing of the electricity bills is that there is a genuine reduction in tariff, not window dressing as it seems the discos are doing.

As I stated in that letter, those who are on prepaid who use air-conditioning systems, and even pump water for commercial purpose pay on average N4000 a month.

Instead of the discos to reduce my “normal” bill by half, it “reduced” my “craziest bill” by half! It was N18,000. Now it is N9000. Half of our minimum wage!

Those I spoke with said even with the reduction, the bills are still unreasonable and that they will not pay for what they did not consume. Already it was reported that consumers in the Papa Ajao area of Mushin in Lagos protested against the high bills and illicit activities of the Eko Electricity Distribution Company, Mushin Business Unit, and this was barely 24 hours after the reduction was announced.

Perhaps, the discos wanted to increase the tariff to a “certain level” without knowing how to do it. So, they thought of raising it way up above their intended tariff, knowing Nigerians will cry out for a reduction. Perhaps, what they call “reduced” is actually where they wanted to “raise” the bill to! But that will not work.

There are still so many problems with the electricity distribution companies. Up till now, the N10,000 bill I paid to the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company’s Abule Egba Business Unit in December, has still not reflected. All I hear is, “They are working on it.” Many people are complaining of the same thing.

All the same, Thank you, again, Mr President, for your kind gesture. But the discos must reduce the bills further. Not based on crazy estimates, but by a fair amount as compared with what those who own prepaid meter are paying, pending when prepaid meters will be given to all consumers.

As a suggestion, electricity bills as estimated for those who do not have prepaid meters should be reduced to no more than N1500 for residents, at worst N2000, depending on the residence. That, with improved power supply, will win the hearts and minds of Nigerian electricity consumers who have long lost faith in the system.

When you go to shop, are you told to pick what you want and pay what you can pay? But the electricity distribution companies tell you to “pay what you can pay.” There is no transparency with them, and they have lost their credibility.

Instead of addressing this, the electricity companies are kicking against the reduction in tariff. In an election year, it is left to be seen who are more powerful between the electorate and the capitalists!

My candid advice to the discos is for them to be “foolish” for once and see how it turns out for them. Perhaps, they should engage the consultants who thought out cheap airfares.

Business is about turnovers. They will not make money by over-labouring the few people who are paying, what they call “passing the bulk to “paying” consumers for losses incurred from “non-paying” consumers.” They are losing more money that way. But they will make more money if the bills are so low, that it is not only easy for all to pay, but also cool to pay.

Who said all the discos have to have one tariff? Each company can be given the autonomy to woo its customers with its own tariff as obtains with the telecoms. They can also give their customers freebies if they pay regularly.

Finally, infrastructure needs to be upgraded so that electricity generated really reaches Nigerians. We should also make power generation from coal real. We should protect our gas pipes better and possibly plead with gas pipeline vandals to desist from destroying them, even if it means “negotiating” with them, to giving them “amnesty.”

FamilyMarriage Dissolved Over Size Of Genital Organ In Zamfara by cozimo(op): 1:43pm On Mar 09, 2015
AN upper Shari’a Court sitting in Samaru area, Gusau, Zamfara State has granted request of marriage dissolution filed by a married woman, Aisha Ibrahim, who dragged her husband, Haruna Maiginar Zinari to a Shari’a Court over her inability to withstand his manhood.

The Presiding Judge, S. T. Shinkafi, however, directed the complainant to pay her husband the sum of N47, 310, which the husband described as his total expenditure for her marriage before he would agree on dissolution of the marriage by the court.

Under Islamic law, if a married woman initiates her divorce, the bride price, paid by the husband at the time of the marriage and other expenditure, must be refunded and the amount is usually finalised or decided by the court.

This was contained in a one-page court judgment dated 5/3/2015 with reference number USC/1/Gus/CV/ 104/14 and signed by Abbas Abubakar on behalf of the court registrar.

It indicated that the plaintiff had agreed to pay her husband Haruna Maiginar Zinar the total amount with a view to free herself from the marriage.

The Guardian observed that Aisha had already submitted the sum of N42, 000 to the court and pledged to settle the balance of N5,000, 310 very soon.

Aisha, had on 2/06/2014 filed a case before the Upper Shari’a Court, Samaru, Gusau, where she urged the court to dissolve her barely one-week-old marriage to her husband, Haruna Maiginar  Maizinari because of the size of his genital organ, which she could not bear.

During the hearing, Aisha told the court that she married Haruna Maiginar Zinarii after her first marriage broke up but that she wanted to be out of the marriage due to the pains she has been experiencing during sex with her new husband.

Aisha, who is a mother of three, further narrated that the first time she and Harunai had sex was a nightmare for her.

“When we had sex for the first time, the experience was a nightmare. Instead of enjoying the sex, it turned out to be something else because his genital is too big. After that first time, I had to take medication given to me by my mother.

I told my mother the experience but she told me to endure and that with time, I would be able to cope. She then gave me some drugs.

Two days later, when he came to visit me, we had sex again but the pain was too much to bear.

It was then I knew that I could not continue with the marriage.”

Haruna Maiginar Zinari expressed his readiness to grant his wife’s prayer for divorce before the court if the complainant conceded to pay him back the pride price and all that he spent on her during the courtship.

HealthWhy There Seems To Be Cancer Everywhere by cozimo(op): 1:05pm On Feb 27, 2015
Cosmas Odoemena

There are few diseases that can evoke fear in us than cancer. Perhaps not just because of its creeping nature, but because it connotes doom.

In the developed world, the number one killer disease is still ischemic heart disease. In the developing world, it is lower respiratory infections (mainly in children). Though, in the developing world, they are now eating what the developed world eat, and living a more sedentary lifestyle, heart related diseases and such other non-communicable diseases mainly found in the developed world are now finding their way into the developing world. Nonetheless, in many parts of the world cancer wants to be second to none.

Though the fact that cancer wants to be number one sounds disturbing, perhaps it is not proper to start comparing cancer to other diseases. As George Johnson, editor and author of 'The Cancer Chronicles,' argued "Cancer is, by far, the harder problem—a condition deeply ingrained in the nature of evolution and multicellular life. Given that obstacle, cancer researchers are fighting and even winning smaller battles: reducing the death toll from childhood cancers and preventing—and sometimes curing—cancers that strike people in their prime. But when it comes to diseases of the elderly, there can be no decisive victory. This is, in the end, a zero-sum game."

It is believed that with enough money and the will, science might reduce cancer mortality to a significant minimum. "But what, then, would we die from?" asks, Johnson. Heart disease and cancer are mainly diseases associated with old age. If we have less people dying from one of them it means more people will live long enough to die of the other.

There is a general increase in life expectancy in most parts of the world. If you get to age 67 you are very much likely to get past 80. The median age for people to die of cancer is 72. But we now live long enough for cancer to get us.

What used to be major killer diseases, like tuberculosis, smallpox, influenza, bubonic plague were easier to handle. For each of these diseases there was a single infectious agent, an identified cause that could be faced.

Nevertheless, death from heart disease is being reduced, or perhaps delayed with diet, exercise and drugs which help control blood pressure and cholesterol. Even major heart problems seen as mechanical, like worn-out valves, clogged piping, may have temporary solutions.

With these interventions, people between 55 and 84 are now more likely to die from cancer than from heart disease. But for those who live beyond that age, heart disease overtakes cancer. And as Johnson puts it "year by year, as more failing hearts can be repaired or replaced, cancer has been slowly closing the gap."

Cancer remains the most intractable. This is because it is more of a phenomenon, than a disease, the result of a basic evolutionary arrangement. As our body lives and grows, its cells are constantly dividing, and copying their DNA, and giving it to the daughter cells. It is a large genetic library. The daughter cells then pass it to their own progeny: copies after copies after copies. Somehow, along the way, inevitably errors occur. Some of these errors are caused by carcinogens, but most of them are due to random misprints.

However, cells have complex mechanisms which recognise and correct many of the errors. But sadly, this mechanism is not foolproof, and it can't ever be. Mutations are what bring about evolution. Without mutations humans would not have evolved. A certain combination will give a cell too much power. It starts to evolve on its own apart from the rest of the body. Just like new species trying to live in an ecosystem, it grows to become a cancerous tumour. And that cannot be easily repaired.

As Johnson elucidates further, "These microscopic rebellions have been happening for at least half a billion years, since the advent of complex multicellular life—collectives of cells that must work together, holding back, as best each can, the natural tendency to proliferate. Those that do not—the cancer cells—are doing, in a Darwinian sense, what they are supposed to do: mutating, evolving and increasing in fitness compared with their neighbours, the better behaved cells of the body. And these are left at a competitive disadvantage, shackled by a compulsion to obey the rules."

As people become old their cells gather more potentially cancerous mutations. If given a long enough life, you will eventually succumb to cancer, unless something else kills you. That would still happen even with the best medical technology and even if the world is free of carcinogens.

Still, the best we can do is to prevent cancer. And places where you hear better news about cancer is where they have better preventive measures. Worldwide, about 15 to 20 percent of cancers are thought to be caused by infectious agents. Improved refrigeration and public sanitation, have significantly reduced stomach cancer, which is linked to Helicobacter pylori bacteria. Vaccines against human papilloma virus can potentially eliminate cervical cancer. Where you have successful antismoking campaigns lung cancer, which accounts for almost 30 percent of cancer deaths in the United States, is reducing gradually. We can make more progress with improvements in screening and by reducing the incidence of obesity (A 2012 study in the Lancet linked cancer to high body-mass index), which along with diabetes, gives cancer a strong foothold.

Amazingly, only a small percentage of cancers have been traced to the many synthetic chemicals that industries have added to the environment. As regulations become stricter, cancer rates are being reduced a little more.

Again, most of the progress made on cancer has been in advanced countries. With enough political will the same effort can be taken to less developed countries.

More progress will be made in the sciences. New immune system therapies that bolster the body's own defences have shown promise for certain cancers. There are nano robots which repair and reverse cellular damage. There is also genomic scans that can tell a cancer’s precise genetic signature.

As at today, with genetic information colon, ovarian, and breast cancer can be prevented in many patients. Perhaps, as a consolation for those who live in less developed countries like Nigeria, Theodora Ross, an oncologist advises that "most people should focus less on the high-tech future of genetic testing and more on the low-tech history of their family trees. Those who don’t know their own family histories, because of adoption, secrecy, loss or estrangement, should take comfort in the fact that we are one big family."

Perhaps, in time to come some of us will give Methuselah a good run for his money. But except for medicine for immortality, a body will get to a point where it has outfoxed every danger life has thrown at it. And for each added period of life, there will be more mutations, which also means more accumulations. "If the heart holds out, then waiting at the end will be cancer," Johnson forewarns.

PoliticsSOS To President Jonathan On Electricity by cozimo(op): 7:57am On Feb 17, 2015
Cosmas Odoemena

Dear Mr. President,

Do forgive me for barging in on you with this letter while you are preparing for your election. This is the only way I am sure I can reach you most effectively. This is not meant to embarrass or distract you, rather the situation warrants that I let my President know my plight, and that of many Nigerians. After all, Americans have easy access to President Barack Obama.

It’s to do with electricity. But you might be wondering why I should write you directly on this when you have a Minister of Power, and even a Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission. But I am sorry to say, if they do exist, Nigerians whom you and they swore to serve have not felt their impact on this matter. In any case, I have written to them several times as well as those written by other people, including opinions by reputable newspapers, not leaving out countless peaceful protests by Nigerians to the distribution companies (discos), to the extent that a public affairs commentator proposed a revolution as the only solution to this problem.

Though it might not matter any longer, I will still go ahead to say it. I feel there are areas that should never be privatised in Nigeria. And one of them is the power sector. The power sector is too critical to be left in the hands of capitalists. Capitalists are like doctors who sell coffins. Electricity is the oxygen of the economy. Unlike government, capitalists have only three things in mind: Profit, profit, and profit. Only competition puts them in check. Unfortunately, the power sector as it is today is a quasi-monopoly. Unlike the telecoms sector, electricity consumers cannot change their electricity suppliers.

Still, Nigerians appreciate the efforts you have put into the power sector reforms so far. Nigerians recognise that it will take time to reach the desired level. But one thing Nigerians cannot take is the injustice, avarice and inefficiency that have bedevilled the sector since it was privatised.

Before the privatisation, my electricity bill as estimated by the old Power Holding Company of Nigeria, Abule Egba business unit in Lagos, because I have yet to be given a prepaid meter, used to be about N2,300 per month. After the privatisation, and the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company took over, the bill became N6,000. After the tariff was “increased” with the so-called MYTO II, it became N13,000. This was given to me for three months. And without any further increase in tariff, that for February is now N18,000! Our minimum wage! It is laughable, if it were it not so grave.

There are those who have prepaid meters in Lagos who use air-conditioning systems and pump their water even for commercial purposes who spend, on average, N4000 monthly. I know some people who don’t have prepaid meters in Abuja who are given a bill of N2,500 a month. An insider of the IKDEC described the N18,000 bill as “impossible.” Still, there will be a further “increase” in tariff for private homes in a few months’ time. Yet, there is no improvement in power supply, particularly since last October. As I am writing you this, there is power outage. Last month and up till this month, the light has been coming and going, every 30 minutes in my neigbourhood!

Now, even if with privatisation, the light does not blink for one year, it is no justification for reckless and irresponsible bills. When the discos supply light that lasts up to five hours at a stretch, they want Nigerians to cheer them. Yet, the light supply is nowhere near what the defunct National Electric Power Authority, or even PHCN used to supply us.

My neighbours have long lost faith in the system. They say they can’t pay for what they did not consume. Someone I know has asked to be completely disconnected until he gets a prepaid meter. He powers himself and still has a lot of savings. But I still pay for my bills regularly. But I get scorned by neighbours, family and friends. That I still pay the outrageous bills that I do not consume even causes friction between my spouse and I. The discos are stretching my already thin patience!

As I said, we still run our generators as before the privatisation. But as said, we will save more if we depend solely on our generators. But that will be antithetic to your vision for the sector. We are all here to support you and the system. But it seems the discos are taking Nigerians for fools. But what they fail to realise is that by their greed, they only succeed in discouraging those who pay their electricity bills. But it is the discos that will lose eventually, as Nigerians know how to beat the system!

The problem has been identified that there is a huge metering gap. The discos are not keen on giving out prepaid meters because of the huge rake-off from the estimated billing system. Nigerians now have to pay for their inefficiency, and feed their greed. Even with their greed, the discos are negligent in maintaining their distribution equipment and upgrading their facility. In December, I paid N10,000, into my account. With that of many others, till date, it has not been credited into my account. They attribute it to a “system error,” and are “working on it.” And they want me to keep paying.

I am sorry, Your Excellency, but this matter is now a campaign issue. Consider the millions of Nigerians who are without prepaid meters who are suffering this injustice. A majority of Nigerians say they have not seen the gain of the fuel price reduction from N97 to N87. But trust me, Nigerians will be very grateful if you intervene in this injustice with the estimated bill. Nigerians are a majority, and the discos are a minority. The majority carries the vote! And that is the vote we promise to give you!

You listened when we said we did not want the removal of fuel subsidy. Pray, on behalf of those Nigerians who are being cheated by the discos, make NERC revert to the old electricity tariff. If the average those who are using prepaid meter are paying is N4,000, the estimated bill given to those who don’t have prepaid meters should be fixed in that range. At worst, let those on prepaid meters pay the new tariff, and those without prepaid meters pay the old tariff. And the day a consumer gets their prepaid meter, they start paying the new tariff. And any disco who still gives out “crazy bills” should be sanctioned. And Nigerians are within their rights not to pay such bills. Perhaps, that is the only sure way of making the discos give their customers prepaid meters, and end the abuse.

I am also aware that you have provided the funds for the provision of one million prepaid meters for consumers. Nigerians appreciate this. But one million meters will go nowhere. And how will the meters be distributed?

Your Excellency, we are not asking to go back to Egypt, but while in the wilderness enroute to the Promised Land, give us the manna called justice!

Permit me one last wish, Sir! The discos are using the excuse of “increased” tariff to feed fat. They are operating an open cheque, with their pen dripping with the blood and sweat of hapless Nigerians. May they be struck by constipation!

Science/TechnologyTwitter Has Added Group Messaging And Video Recording by cozimo(op): 8:38pm On Jan 27, 2015
Faced with slow growth in new users and usage by existing users, Twitter executives repeatedly promised improvements to make the social network more inviting.

On Tuesday, the company delivered on two of those promises, adding the ability to send a private message to a group as well as adding a video recorder that allows users to shoot, edit and post video directly from Twitter’s mobile apps. (Last week, the company fulfilled another promise, adding a feature for iOS users called Recap that shows top tweets that you missed since your last login.)

While hardly groundbreaking, the video and messaging features finally bring Twitter on par with Facebook, its much larger rival, which has offered group messaging and integrated video for some time. Perhaps more important for Twitter’s investors, the improvements show that the company, which was notorious for the creeping pace of its product improvements, is picking up the tempo under the new leadership installed by Dick Costolo, its chief executive, in a series of management shake-ups last year.

The group messaging service allows Twitter users to send a private message to up to 20 people, either predefined as a group or created on the fly. While any kind of message can be sent — and probably will — the feature is geared toward sharing and discussing a tweet. To keep down spam, you will initially be able to send a message only to people you are already connected with on the service. But other people in the group can add their contacts, allowing a larger conversation to occur.

The video software is aimed at capturing live events and sharing them with the public. From the box where you post tweets, you will be able to touch a camera icon to fire up the software, which allows you to shoot and combine snippets of video into a clip of up to 30 seconds.

“Anyone on Twitter will be able to capture and share video,” said Jinen Kamdar, a Twitter product director, said in an interview to discuss the changes. “It’s less about pro editing and more about getting authentic clips out in the world really quickly.” The videos can be played with one click.

Video is the biggest battleground among social and media sites, with giants like Facebook and Google’s YouTube vying with smaller sites to keep the attention of visitors — and show them more advertising while they’re there.

Twitter’s new video product could increase traffic and the amount of time that current users spend on the service, and better messaging could keep them from turning to pure messaging apps like WhatsApp and Snapchat to pass along the latest cool link or photo. (An expected new feature to lure new users, an instant feed of content to follow as soon as someone signs up, is due within weeks.)

The company is adding the new messaging and video features to Twitter.com as well as the latest versions of its iOS, Android and TweetDeck apps released Tuesday. But the messaging and video updates won’t actually be available to all 284 million active users right away — the company is gradually activating them for its entire customer base over the next couple of weeks.

Mr. Kamdar said that unlike many new Twitter features, these were tested only internally among Twitter employees before going live. So the company will be just as curious as Twitter users to see how they are used in real life.

Sweden’s Foreign Ministry says it summoned Saudi Arabia’s charge d’affaires to protest the flogging of a blogger convicted of insulting Islam.

Ministry spokesman Jon Pelling says the diplomat at the Saudi Embassy in Stockholm was summoned Monday “to express the concern” over the conviction and public flogging of Raif Badawi.

Saudi officials on Friday postponed a second round of flogging after a doctor said Badawi’s wounds from the first 50 lashes had not yet healed.

His first flogging took place on Jan. 9 before dozens of people in the Red Sea city of Jiddah.

Badawi was sentenced in May to 10 years in prison and 1,000 lashes for criticizing Saudi Arabia’s powerful clerics and ridiculing the country’s morality police on a liberal blog he founded.

PoliticsA reaction to a "silly" Cartoon On Buhari by cozimo(op):
Though I am still undecided on which candidate to vote for, in the upcoming Presidential election, I was bemused by a full-page cartoon I saw on January 8, 2015 in several national dailies that tried to lampoon Major-General Mohammadu Buhari (rtd), the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential candidate. It was sponsored by an amorphous group that calls itself "Concerned Nigerians." In the said cartoon the setting looked like a church, because there was a bold red cross standing behind and above the "faithful" who seemed to be singing as they held in their right hands a paper written "hymn." Among those in the church was a Buhari who was in the first row and holding his own hymn paper, albeit he also held in his left hand a Tasbih or Muslim prayer beads! Buhari had a mephistophelian glint in his eye!

The artist tried to convey the impression that Buhari had this thought going through him: "Let me win first...Sharia for sure." But if the artist wanted to create a picture where Buhari was having a diabolical thought that those in the church would not know, until of course, they had voted for him, then they got it awfully wrong! Those in the church heard what Buhari said all right! Instead of using a thought bubble, the artist used a speech bubble!

Speech balloons, which can also be called speech bubbles, word balloons, or dialogue balloons are a graphic convention employed by cartoonists and in comic books to allow words to be understood. They represent speech or thoughts of a character. There is a clear difference between the balloon that stands for words spoken aloud and the one that stands for subjective thoughts. The one that stands for words spoken aloud uses a bubble with a pointer, which is called a tail, directed towards the speaker, while the one for subjective thoughts has a large, cloud-like bubble which contains the text of the thought, and has a chain of increasingly smaller circular bubbles which lead to the character. Elliptical bubble can also be used instead of a cloud-shaped one. You can also have a square or a rectangular speech bubble.

If I were Buhari I needn't worry my head about an amateur out-of-their-depth cartoonist and their mischievous, naïve and "off-key" sponsors!

PoliticsBuhari Can’t Remember His Phone Number –jonathan by cozimo(op): 10:17am On Jan 10, 2015
President Goodluck Jonathan on Friday during a rally in Enugu said that the All Progressives Congress candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd), cannot remember his own mobile phone number.

Jonathan, whose unscripted address was mostly a response to previous statements made by Buhari, accused the APC presidential candidate of deceiving Nigerians by promising to revive the economy without explaining how he would achieve the feat.

The President wondered how Buhari would develop the country’s economy, a feat he could not achieve while he was in office as head of state between 1983 and 1985.

“Is it now that Buhari cannot even remember his own phone number that he can change the economy of the country.” Jonathan asked.

The Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate said that although he did not like to “go personal during campaigns,” “sometimes circumstances demand that certain things must be said.”

Jonathan said that Buhari belonged to the medieval age, adding that he (the APC candidate) intended to run the Federal Government as a medieval king.

He said, “We cannot run the government as if we are in the medieval age; we cannot run a government where somebody said he would throw people into jail.

“You are not a medieval king – a medieval king can throw you into jail but we have to follow the rule of law because we cannot go back to the old days.”

Jonathan, however, read the speech made by Gen. Ibrahim Babangida (rtd.) after overthrowing Buhari’s regime through a military coup on August 27, 1985 to justify his claim that the APC candidate does not keep his promises.

Babangida, in the portions of the address read by Jonathan, justified Buhari’s overthrow by pointing out that the latter did not live up to the promises he made to Nigerians when he ousted a democratically elected civilian government headed by Alhaji Shehu Shagari in a military coup.

Noting that Buhari “deceived Nigerians” from 1983 to 1985, Jonathan quoted Babangida as saying, “The initial objectives of Buhari’s intervention were betrayed as there was a general deterioration of standard of living in the country.”

The PDP candidate also pointed out that Babangida accused Buhari of being “too rigid in his attitude to national issues” and “became alienated from the people” in the course of his stay in power.

He, therefore, challenged Buhari to tell Nigerians how he intends to revive the economy.

Jonathan said, “They are telling young Nigerians that they are going to change the economy but they have not told us how they want to manage the economy more than us.

“If they say they want to change agriculture, they should tell us the weak links in the agriculture value chain and what they want to do about it.

“I said in Lagos that I want to work with young people, not to deceive people.

“I am not going to run the government based on my habits, I am going to run the government according to global best practices.”

Jonathan also insisted that he was committed to the campaign against corruption.

“There is no government that has fought corruption more than we do,” he said, noting that some previous administrations pretended to be fighting corruption while oppressing their enemies.

He recalled that Buhari jailed some prominent Igbo politicians while in office as head of state, including former Vice-President Alex Ekwueme and former governor of old Anambra State, Chief Jim Nwobodo.

Stressing that Buhari jailed politicians on trumped up charges, Jonathan said, “You can no longer carry people and put them in prison for 301 years.”

The President equally accused Buhari of having a wrong idea of corruption.

According to him, Buhari believes that every wealthy Nigerian is corrupt.

He said, “If a Nigerian businessman has a private jet, then you are corrupt but if a South African has a private jet then you commend him.

“If you have a good house, then you are corrupt, if you have a good car then you are corrupt – that is his definition of corruption.”

Jonathan accused his opponent of making spurious claims against him.

The President said, “They are saying that government is corrupt but they are not telling us what they are going to do to stop corruption. Let them go back to their consultants to coach them, then I will listen to them.

“They should tell us how they are going to manage the economy better than we do.

“They are saying we stole foreign reserves, nobody can steal foreign reserves – spurious allegations.”

He also reiterated his claim that Buhari did not equip the military while he was the head of state.

Jonathan said that he had done more than his predecessors to shore up the country’s defence.

“For 30 years, we had only one frigate, now we have four additional frigates,” he said.

In the same vein, he pointed out that Buhari did not find any woman worthy enough for appointment when he was the military head of state.

The President asked Nigerians to assess him and Buhari by looking at how they performed during their respective periods in office.

He said, “They have deceived us before and they want to deceive us again.

“Go and find out whether these people are deceiving you or are telling you the truth.

“People are assessing me because I have run this country for some years – they have run this country for two years.

“They came with promises but immediately they came in, what they did was to jail Jim Nwobodo for 201 years.”

If you,as a muslim, have no problem with this, then you're part of the ideological problem were facing today.

RomanceHow To Not Get Caught Cheating On Your Partner by cozimo(op): 10:49pm On Jan 09, 2015
Cheating on your partner is a pretty serious decision to make, one that should be avoided if possible. But if you decide that you are going to do it, you should do it right to decrease the possibility of someone getting hurt. See Step 1 below to get started.

Steps

1Use an online dating site, to help you find a partner from the privacy of your own home. There are even websites specific designed for people wishing to have extra-marital affairs. When browsing online, make sure to use the 'private' browsing feature in your web browser to make sure that your web history doesn't get recorded. You should also download an application to delete any cookies, history, etc. from your computer.

2If your partner brings up suspicions they have, keep it simple, give them a lie they can hold onto, and then stop leaving evidence. Cover it up and don't make the same mistake again.

3The more trusting and forgiving your partner is, the easier it is to lie to said partner, but try to keep the lying to a minimum. A mountain of lies no matter how well constructed is as good as proof in the end.

4Don't get moody with your partner when you try to kick him or her out of the house to make room for someone else. Every suspicious act will bring you closer to getting caught or dumped.

5It may be somewhat effective to occasionally act like you're suspicious of your partner's activity, as if he or she were the one doing the cheating. Be careful though, as this is recognized as a cheater's tactic.

6If your partner makes a surprise visit and you barely have enough time to get the subject of your affair out of the house before your partner arrives, don't shrink away from his touch like you feel dirty or grumpy. If you act like you're happy to see him/her it's less suspicious than acting like you're pissed off that you were interrupted.

7Cheating not only breaks hearts but it also break families, wipes away the happiness of peoples lives. And not only the life of the one who has been cheated but also of the one who cheated, in fact cheating often leads to depression, suicide and even killing sprees, so you could end up with innocent blood on your hands.

8If you don't love him or her, then simply tell them the way you feel. Breaking up is the best way to get rid of the relationship that is bothering you, and the relationship that is eventually going to bother the other person as well.

9If you do get caught your partner will be devastated. Surely the next step from your partner's side would be to go away from you by breaking the relationship, but if that really was supposed to be the end, then why shouldn't end it without anybody being felt ditched, guilty or liar etc?

Christianity EtcSaudi Blogger Flogged For ‘insulting Islam’ by cozimo(op): 5:54pm On Jan 09, 2015
Saudi Arabia has lashed a liberal blogger 50 times in public, despite widespread international outrage and calls for clemency from human right groups.

Hillel Neuer, Executive Director of UN Watch, said on twitter that blogger and activist, Raif Badawi, was lashed outside a mosque in the Red Sea coastal city of Jeddah on Friday.

Badawi is due to undergo 50 lashes every week after Friday prayers, which will continue for 20 weeks until his punishment is complete.

Amnesty International says Badawi, who started the “Free Saudi Liberals” website, was sentenced to 10 years in prison and 1,000 lashes on charges related to accusations he insulted Islam on the online forum.

He was also ordered by Jeddah’s Criminal Court to pay a fine of $266,000.

“It is horrifying to think that such a vicious and cruel punishment should be imposed on someone who is guilty of nothing more than daring to create a public forum for discussion and peacefully exercising the right to freedom of expression,” Philip Luther, Amnesty’s Middle East and North Africa Director, said.

“Saudi Arabian authorities must immediately halt all plans to carry out this brutal sentence,” he said.

The United States had also appealed to Saudi Arabia to cancel the sentence.

State Department spokeswoman, Jen Psaki, said the US was “greatly concerned.” She called the 1,000 lashes an “inhumane” response to someone exercising his right to freedom of expression and religion.

“The United States government calls on Saudi authorities to cancel this brutal punishment and to review Badawi’s case and sentence,” Psaki said.

Around 14,000 people have signed an online petition calling on Saudi’s King Abdullah to pardon Badawi.

Rights groups and activists say his case is part of a wider clampdown on dissent throughout the kingdom.

PoliticsFrance: Shooting, Hostage-taking happening now in Eastern Paris by cozimo(op): 2:40pm On Jan 09, 2015
France’s anti-terrorism prosecutor says a shooting and hostage-taking attack is underway at a kosher market on the eastern edge of Paris. A police official said there are multiple hostages and wounded at the scene.

The French president ordered the country’s top security official to the scene, an official in the presidency told The Associated Press. The police official declined to be named when discussing the unfolding situation.

The events near Paris’ Porte de Vincennes took place as two suspects in France’s deadliest terror attack in decades were cornered near Charles de Gaulle airport.
