To avoid too many irrelevant and meaningless words, here's Morpheus's sîlly hypothesis.

The hypothesis is linear. Typical mental simpleton stuff.

Foreign AffairsRe: Where Would South Africa Be Without White People? by CraigB:
morpheus24: Drinking the cup of Rooibos tea...... Uhhhhhhh.... nah don't see the relevance of the above point. Another diversionary tactic by the Mukiwa.

As usual a display of the audacity of white priviledged education.

The intent was never to correlate snow with whiteness or the migration of whites into Asiahuh? ( as usual a misrepresentation of my posts). The intent was to correlate the similarity of climate conditions in the home country and settler country with the size of the white settler population. The misrepresentation caused by white priviledged education wants to insinuate that Morpheus's correlation implies absolute causation in every instance.

Irrelevant to the point at hand. The assertion never implies that where there is snow you will find white people

The pic of snow in south Africa simply implies that in comparison to regions closer to the equator in Africa i.e. West Africa, the weather in South Africa is susceptible to extreme cold to the point of Snow. A conducive climatic condition for White settlers seeing that their adaptations are in tune with that sort of condition

I don't know who came up with that social classification or if they consulted native Africans about it before they made it up so if I choose to ignore it, forgive my boldness in the face of social constructs.

Sorry but to me the man from spain is not white while the man from Austria is, regardless of long running scientific" race is not biological" arguement so for all intent and purpose, Columbia is out, Australia, Canada, the US and South Africa are in. They are typical White settler populations.
If I were to insist on calling you an ape and a monkey, it would introduce a racial element to this debate. So, I suggest that you take it easy on the "Mukiwa" story, unless you have run out points to debate on (which you have). I can choose to be racist too.. It is bad enough that your whole assessment is stûpid. Let's not make it racial too.

Your correlation story does not work, because the "similar to Europe" variable is present in Northern Asia, but the "white people" variable is missing. There should be white people in these region for us to be able to conclude "causation". Fail.

Now, you my friend, are a joke. I am convinced that it is not so much that you are "challenged", as it is that you are too lazy to think and read. Your two pictures are idîotic, because you clearly decided to go for two extremes. One - a blonde guy. And then - a Mediterranean guy.

Rubbish!

Now, seeing as you choose to ignore the most important things when debating, let me teach you a thing or two:

I choose to give you writings by your fellow black people, seeing as you do not have the intelligence to look beyond skin colour. Not that it's surprising seeing as you are arguing that you are useless because you are black cry

What We Mean When We Say 'Race Is a Social Construct'

In a world where Kevin Garnett, Harold Ford, and Halle Berry all check "black" on the census, even the argument that racial labels refer to natural differences in physical traits doesn't hold up.

Andrew Sullivan and Freddie Deboer have two pieces up worth checking out. I disagree with Andrew's (though I detect some movement in his position.) Freddie's piece is entitled "Precisely How Not to Argue About Race and IQ." He writes:

The problem with people who argue for inherent racial inferiority is not that they lie about the results of IQ tests, but that they are credulous about those tests and others like them when they shouldn't be; that they misunderstand the implications of what those tests would indicate even if they were credible; and that they fail to find the moral, analytic, and political response to questions of race and intelligence.
I think this is a good point, but I want to expand it. Most of the honest writing I've seen on "race and intelligence" focuses on critiquing the idea of "intelligence." So there's lot of good literature on whether it can be measured, its relevance in modern society, whether intelligence changes across generations, whether it changes with environment, and what we mean when we say IQ. As Freddie mentions here, I had a mathematician stop past to tell me I needed to stop studying French, and immediately start studying statistics -- otherwise I can't possibly understand this debate.

It's a fair critique. My response is that he should stop studying math and start studying history.

I am not being flip or coy. If you tell me that you plan to study "race and intelligence" then it is only fair that I ask you, "What do you mean by race?" It's true I don't always do math so well, but I understand the need to define the terms of your study. If you're a math guy, perhaps your instinct is to point out the problems in the interpretation of the data. My instinct is to point out that your entire experiment proceeds from a basic flaw -- no coherent, fixed definition of race actually exists.

The history bears this out. In 1856, Ralph Waldo Emerson delineated the significance of race:

It is race, is it not, that puts the hundred millions of India under the dominion of a remote island in the north of Europe. Race avails much, if that be true, which is alleged, that all Celts are Catholics, and all Saxons are Protestants; that Celts love unity of power, and Saxons the representative principle. Race is a controlling influence in the Jew, who, for two millenniums, under every climate, has preserved the same character and employments. Race in the negro is of appalling importance. The French in Canada, cut off from all intercourse with the parent people, have held their national traits. I chanced to read Tacitus "on the Manners of the Germans," not long since, in Missouri, and the heart of Illinois, and I found abundant points of resemblance between the Germans of the Hercynian forest, and our Hoosiers, Suckers, and Badgers of the American woods.
Indeed, Emerson in 1835, saw race as central to American greatness:

The inhabitants of the United States, especially of the Northern portion, are descended from the people of England and have inherited the trais of their national character...It is common with the Franks to break their faith and laugh at it The race of Franks is faithless.
Emerson was not alone, as historian James McPherson points out, Southerners not only thought of themselves as a race separate from blacks, but as a race apart from Northern whites:

The South's leading writer on political economy, James B. D. De Bow, subscribed to this Norman-Cavalier thesis and helped to popularize it in De Bow's Review. As the lower-South states seceded one after another during the winter of 1860-61, this influential journal carried several long articles justifying secession on the grounds of irreconcilable ethnic differences between Southern and Northern whites. "The Cavaliers, Jacobites, and Huguenots, who settled the South, naturally hate, contemn, and despise the Puritans who settled the North," proclaimed one of these articles. "The former are a master-race; the latter a slave race, the descendants of Saxon serfs." The South was now achieving its "independent destiny" by repudiating the failed experiment of civic nationalism that had foolishly tried in 1789 to "erect one nation out of two irreconcilable peoples."
Similarly, in 1899 William Z. Ripley wrote The Races of Europe, which sought to delineate racial difference through head-type:

The shape of the human head by which we mean the general proportions of length, breadth, and height, irrespective of the " bumps " of the phrenologist is one of the best available tests of race known. Its value is, at the same time, but imperfectly appreciated beyond the inner circle of professional anthropology. Yet it is so simple a phenomenon, both in principle and in practical application, that it may readily be of use to the traveller and the not too superficial observer of men.

To be sure, widespread and constant peculiarities of head form are less noticeable in America, because of the extreme variability of our population, compounded as it is of all the races of Europe; they seem also to be less fundamental among the American aborigines. But in the Old World the observant traveller may with a little attention often detect the racial affinity of a people by this means.
Two years later, Edward A. Ross sought to apprehend "The Causes of Race Superiority." He saw the differences between the Arab "race" and the Jewish "race" as a central illustration:

It is certain that races differ in their attitude toward past and future. M. Lapie has drawn a contrast between the Arab and the Jew. The Arab remembers; he is mindful of past favors and past injuries. He harbors his vengeance and cherishes his gratitude. He accepts everything on the authority of tradition, loves the ways of his ancestors, forms strong local attachments, and migrates little. The Jew, on the other hand, turns his face toward the future. He is thrifty and always ready for a good stroke of business, will, indeed, join with his worst enemy if it pays. He is calculating, enterprising, migrant and ambitious
You can see more of this here.

Our notion of what constitutes "white" and what constitutes "black" is a product of social context. It is utterly impossible to look at the delineation of a "Southern race" and not see the Civil War, the creation of an "Irish race" and not think of Cromwell's ethnic cleansing, the creation of a "Jewish race" and not see anti-Semitism. There is no fixed sense of "whiteness" or "blackness," not even today. It is quite common for whites to point out that Barack Obama isn't really "black" but "half-white." One wonders if they would say this if Barack Obama were a notorious drug-lord.

When the liberal says "race is a social construct," he is not being a soft-headed dolt; he is speaking an historical truth. We do not go around testing the "Irish race" for intelligence or the "Southern race" for "hot-headedness." These reasons are social. It is no more legitimate to ask "Is the black race dumber than then white race?" than it is to ask "Is the Jewish race thriftier than the Arab race?"

The strongest argument for "race" is that people who trace their ancestry back to Europe, and people who trace most of their ancestry back to sub-Saharan Africa, and people who trace most of their ancestry back to Asia, and people who trace their ancestry back to the early Americas, lived isolated from each other for long periods and have evolved different physical traits (curly hair, lighter skin, etc.)

But this theoretical definition (already fuzzy) wilts under human agency, in a real world where Kevin Garnett, Harold Ford, and Halle Berry all check "black" on the census. (Same deal for "Hispanic."wink The reasons for that take us right back to fact of race as a social construct. And an American-centered social construct. Are the Ainu of Japan a race? Should we delineate darker South Asians from lighter South Asians on the basis of race? Did the Japanese who invaded China consider the Chinese the same "race?"

Andrew writes that liberals should stop saying "truly stûpid things like race has no biological element." I agree. Race clearly has a biological element -- because we have awarded it one. Race is no more dependent on skin color today than it was on "Frankishness" in Emerson's day. Over history of race has taken geography, language, and vague impressions as its basis.

"Race," writes the great historian Nell Irvin Painter, "is an idea, not a fact." Indeed. Race does not need biology. Race only requires some good guys with big guns looking for a reason.

Now, May I have more questions answered please:

1. On what grounds is South African climate considered similar to European climate?

2. Why is there a small number of white people in Tibet, Northern India and Mongolia, notwithstanding the climate in these regions being closer to Europena climate.

3. People classified as white in, say, Brazil - there's lots of them. Why are they in Brazil and not in,. Say Tibet (which, as per your empty hypothesis, is closer to Europe, in climate?)

4. Why have you excluded the mineral wealth variable from your correlation analysis?

No name-calling. Deal with the questions.

Foreign AffairsRe: Where Would South Africa Be Without White People? by CraigB:
morpheus24: except that each of them have four seasons in the year much like europe with cold winters and hot summers.

For the record. I do not consider Southern spanish people or southern Portuguese, most of whom colonized those areas to be "white people". They are Europeans for sure, but definitely not white by my standards. Sorry, this factors into my correlation assertion so Columbia is eliminated from the correlation assertion.

Irrelevant to the correlation point. Doesn't have anything to do with "white settlements". THe assertion does not state that white people are found in every region where the climate is similar to that of Europe.
Lots of words, but nothing said.

Go home. Get a cup of tea. Read "climate vs weather".

Once you understand the difference, come and try again.

And don't talk "correlation" because you admitted that it's only an indicator of the likelihood of causation - not proof - which can be rebutted by inquiring minds. And an inquiring mind, you aren't. You settle on the first thing that you see.

And this inability to now correlate snow with whiteness in Asia proves this. "Doesn't have anything to do with..." -your words. That you yourself have admitted that your theory doesn't apply universally proves that correlation was never causation.

I still need an answer: where are the whites in the listed regions: Tibet, northern India, Mongolia, to name but 3? The climate map puts these regions closer to Europe. Where are the whites?

Now, weather vs climate. Research that and happily withdraw the weather picture of snow in africa, that you posted. Unless you want to look even more sîlly, of course.

As for your "whiteness" story - you struggle with the South Americans because race doesn't exist biologically anyway. But the social classification side of race says there are white people in these countries. Your protestations are meaningless and desperate. You weren't only given Columbia, as an example anyway.
Foreign AffairsRe: Where Would South Africa Be Without White People? by CraigB:
morpheus24: The climate in Tibet has nothing more to do with anything anymore than Japan has to do with snowy weather

Lets stick to places that have large white settlers population shall we.
You're the one that posted pictures of snow. So, debate that with yourself, seeing as you've gone and confused yourself.

Now, the countries on the climate map, including Australia, that are red - are nothing like Europe.

Facts and numbers. Not rubbish. Brazil, South Africa, Columbia, Venezuela etc. Lots of whites.

On the climate map, northern Asia is closer to Europe. Trickling of whites. Where are the whites in Tibet? Where are the whites in Mongolia? In northern India, to name but three?

White people don't melt.

Attack by Boko Haram Islamists in Nigeria leaves many dead, say witnesses

Hundreds of Islamist militants have staged one of their most audacious attacks yet on a military base in northern Nigeria, prompting a 24-hour curfew that cut off roads and closed airspace, officials and eyewitnesses said.
A massive co-ordinated assault by the Boko Haram group in the city of Maiduguri may have left scores of people dead, Associated Press reported, and civilians "said they saw bodies with slit throats and corpses of insurgents burning in vehicles", but there was no independent verification of the death toll.
The killings dashed recent hopes that Boko Haram has been driven out of Maiduguri and other urban centres into remote rural areas.

Since 2009 the group has been waging a violent campaign to establish an Islamic state in Nigeria and impose sharia law on Africa's largest population.
Monday's attack was among its most dramatic and reportedly comprised up to 500 militants. In trucks and a stolen armoured personnel carrier, they laid siege to an air force and army base, razing buildings and setting shops and petrol stations ablaze on the outskirts of Maiduguri, the city where Boko Haram was founded.
Explosions and automatic gunfire could be heard across the north-eastern city from around 2.30am when the insurgents launched the attack with screams of "Allahu akbar," or "God is great".
"My family and I could not sleep till daybreak because the shooting continued till about 8am," Haruna Ali told Reuters at the scene. Military ambulances could be seen transporting bodies to a hospital morgue.
Brigadier-general Chris Olukolade, a defence ministry spokesman, said security forces had repelled attacks by "daring terrorists", adding: "Military locations such as the Nigerian air force base and some army locations in Maiduguri were targeted."
He claimed that 24 insurgents were killed and many injured along with two air force personnel, while two helicopters and three disused military aircraft were "incapacitated" in the attack.
Flights to and from Maiduguri international airport, which is near the air force base, had been disrupted during the clashes but had now resumed, Olukolade said.
The state government ordered all civilians to stay at home and extended a night-time curfew to 24 hours across the city. Kassim Shettima, the Borno state governor, vowed defiance: "We are going to replace all buildings destroyed by the insurgents even if they destroy them a hundred times. I know we shall overcome … the Satanic ideology of this group."
The attack comes a week after the Nigerian military bombarded forest hideouts of Boko Haram near the border with Cameroon, with air strikes and ground assaults.
President Goodluck Jonathan imposed a state of emergency in May in three states, acknowledging the insurgents had seized control of many towns and villages, and flooded the area with security forces. The military quickly forced the militants out of urban centres but have appeared unable to halt attacks on targets like schools, remote villages and major highways, where they set up impromptu roadblocks.
Foreign AffairsRe: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by CraigB: 9:42pm On Dec 04, 2013
The Hilux story was always a side-argument.

The story of the day is the uselessness of the Naai-gerian military and intelligence, which allowed Boko haram a great day at the office, this week.

That's the crux of the matter.

Whether one wants to argue "insider assistance" or something else, the roads lead to the same place - uselessness. Uselessness while fighting at home.
Foreign AffairsRe: Where Would South Africa Be Without White People? by CraigB: 8:45pm On Dec 04, 2013
morpheus24: HAHAHAHAHA, right back at ya dude.

Bantu education is astonishing. Of course people are able to "settle" anywhere on the face of the planet post modern era. You can find black people in iceland and white people in the deserts of Dubai.

However the above observation does not diminish the sufficient factor i.e Climate/Physical environment that influences human settlement as opposed to a necessary factor of human settlements i.e. economics.

So therefore:

" It is relevant to note that if one simply scans the globe for all "white settler" populations outside of Europe, there is no doubt a correlation between the similarity of climate in the home country and the SIZE of the European settlers in that region.
Thinking 101.

Correlation is not causation.

And I didn't know South Africa, Australia, Chile and Brazil had European weather and climate.

Amazing.
Foreign AffairsRe: Where Would South Africa Be Without White People? by CraigB:
paniki: Sorry bro, I don't buy the idea that a group of people move to a particular area, stay there for hundreds od years and then come to the realisation that the weather is not ayoba.

Colonisation was alll about economics. Whites settled in SA because they had already found all the resources. It's a pity that whites found your oil too late, nevertheless you still find plenty of whites in the oil rich regions of Nigeria. This has nothing to do with the weather, people will settle wherever money can be made regardless of the elements
Ag shame - naai-gerians crying for their departed white colonisers?

Nooit man. Ag shame. cry

They shouldn't cry though. They do have black oppressors today. If it's any consolation.

"HONORARY WHITES" is a term that was used by the apartheid regime of South Africa to grant almost all of the rights and privileges of whites to certain favoured non-white groups.

Japanese

The designation was applied to Japanese people (who were also once considered Honorary Aryans) in the 1960s to assist a trade pact formed between South Africa and Japan in the early 1960s, when Tokyo's Yawata Iron & Steel Co. offered to purchase 5,000,000 tons of South African pig iron, worth more than $250,000,000, over a ten-year period.[1] With such a huge deal in the works, Prime Minister Hendrik Verwoerd determined that it would be tactless and disadvantageous to their trade arrangements to subject the Japanese people to the same restrictions as other non-white ethnicities, since trade delegations from Japan would now regularly visit South Africa for business. Thenceforth, Pretoria's Group Areas Board publicly announced that all Japanese people would be considered white, at least for purposes of residence. Johannesburg's city officials even decided that "in view of the trade agreements" the municipal swimming pools would be open to all Japanese guests.[1] The designation gave Japanese almost all of the same rights and privileges as whites (except for the right to vote, as well as being exempt from conscription).

Chinese South Africans

The new designation granted to the Japanese seemed grossly unfair to South Africa's small Chinese community (roughly 7,000 at that time), who it seemed, would enjoy none of the new benefits given to the Japanese. As Time wrote:

If anything, we are whiter in appearance than our Japanese friends.' huffed one of Cape Town's leading Chinese businessmen. Demanded another indignantly: 'Does this mean that the Japanese, now that they are [considered] White, cannot associate with us without running afoul of the Immorality Act?'[1]

Chinese people could, however, sometimes benefit from passing as Japanese - at least at the swimming pools - because, as the chairman of the city council's Health and Amenities Committee stated, "It would be extremely difficult for our gatekeepers to distinguish between Chinese and Japanese".[1] In 1984, South African Chinese, now increased to about 10,000, finally obtained the same official rights as the Japanese in South Africa, that is, to be treated as whites in terms of the Group Areas Act.[2][3]

Other East Asians

Up until the abolition of apartheid, the "honorary white" status was eventually extended to people of other East Asian nationalities, including those from South Korea and Taiwan. The latter was due to the good and important relations between South Africa and Taiwan.[3][4]

Others

The "honorary white" status was also given to a number of special visitors belonging to other races, including:

Guyanese author E. R. Braithwaite - who wrote a scathing book Honorary White: Visit to South Africa[5] about his visit
Cricketers in the West Indian rebel team[6]
Players of Maori or Samoan backgrounds in the 1970 touring All Blacks rugby team[7][8]
Australian Aboriginal tennis player Evonne Goolagong
This long-winded thing of a post proves nothing.

What you need to do is sit in the naughty boy corner - and promise you'll never be naughty again.

Otherwise, it's spanky-spanky!

South African to head global nursing society
Wednesday, 04 December 2013

South African Hester Klopper was appointed president of the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI), at its 42nd Biennial Convention in Indianapolis in the United States last month.

She is the first non-North American to head up the 90-year-old non-profit organisation, which has a global network of 492 chapters throughout 90 countries.

Klopper is the chief executive of the Forum for University Nursing Deans in South Africa. A research scholar with more than 60 peer-reviewed publications, she has extensive networks in global health, policy development and nursing.

She also co-ordinates the PLUME programme, funded by the National Research Foundation in South Africa, which supports the development of post-doctoral research programmes.

Klopper's appointment "marks an important step as we become more internationally global," STTI chief executive Patricia Thompson said in a statement. "She will be an inspirational leader whose global vision will prove valuable now and in the future."

The newly elected president said she would focus on "servant leadership, connectedness, transformation and gratitude" in her two years of service at STTI.

"By their very nature, nurses epitomise servant leadership," Klopper said. "I am thrilled to see the transformational impact STTI members continue to make on a global scale."

The role of nurses in influencing government policy and enhancing health systems worldwide are also focal points for Klopper. At her direction, STTI has taken the lead in creating the global advisory panel on the future of nursing, which will meet for the first time in Switzerland in March 2014.

STTI is a non-profit organisation, which supports the learning, knowledge and professional development of nurses in contributing to healthcare worldwide.

Founded in 1922 at the Indiana University School of Nursing, the society has more than 135,000 members - including practicing nurses, educators, researchers, policymakers, entrepreneurs, and others - in more than 90 countries.

The society holds non-governmental organisation special consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations.

Nigeria frees 16 girls in 'baby factory' raid
2013-12-04 17:02

Lagos - Nigerian police said on Wednesday that they raided a home and freed 16 pregnant girls and young women allegedly being forced to have babies to be sold.

"We carried out a raid on a residence in Owerri following an intelligence report and rescued 16 expectant mothers," Imo State police spokesperson Joy Elomoko told AFP.

"The girls were between 14 and 19 years old and in different stages of pregnancy."

The male owner of the home, who was arrested, had registered it as a non-governmental organisation promoting women's and children's issues, Elomoko added.

An unlicensed automatic pump action shotgun was also recovered during the raid.

Elomoko said the rescued women and girls told officers that they were each offered 100 000 naira ($632) to sell their babies after delivery.

An investigation was also underway over a case of a missing baby from the illegal home.

Sold into prostitution

"We found out that the suspect could not explain the whereabouts of a baby that was recently delivered in the home," the spokesperson said.

"We are suspecting that the baby might have been sold for [black magic] rituals," she said, adding that the suspect would be taken to court after police investigation.

Nigerian security agents have uncovered a series of alleged baby factories in recent years, notably in the south-eastern part of the country.

Last month, six pregnant teenage girls were freed in a raid on an illegal clinic in the oil city of Port Harcourt.

Human trafficking is widespread in west Africa, where children are bought from their families to work in plantations, mines and factories or as domestic help.

Others are sold into prostitution, and less commonly they are tortured or sacrificed in black magic rituals.

Henry120: so the attack on a US marine base in afghanistan and the destruction of multiple US marines harrier jets was as a result of what exactly?
It certainly was not as a result of the enemy "sneaking out of the Sambisa forest in their numbers".

Diverting attention from the many points that have been raised won't help.

The US was in a foreign country, to begin with. The Naai-gerian military is fighting in its own country, with the full support of government and the law (state of emergency).

Why don't you analyse for us why the US base was attacked so that it will be revealed to all that the circumstances are hardly the same.

Don't attack the poster. Deal with the facts that he's presented.

The Naai-gerian military needs help and no amount of denial will change that.

O.k., so this Touray guy, is basically the only human source in this story, funny thing is he did not even witness the events that took place, or have taken place. Second, if the Nigerian Airforce has not been dislodging the terrorists as touray claims, then why would they attack the air force base..for the past four years they have attacked police bases and army barracks, this was before the Nigerian military started the major offensive against them. In their entire history, they have never attacked an airforce base. But now when the 'claims' of airstrikes have been made by the military..they attack the airforce base. My point is they had to have been provoked by something to attack an airforce base. This just proves that indeed they have been taking huge and major losses, which provoked them to attack an airforce base sort of as a reprisal attack.
It simple logic and common sense man.
Funny. You promise not to waste your time on it. And then you write a whole paragraph. Either you disprove the article or you don't. Make up your mind.

And what happened to your "insider" argument? Abandoned it?

This latest argument of yours is as illogical. Since when does attacking an enemy's setup mean that the enemy is winning? Incapacitating the enemy is the whole point of war.

Seeing as you're speculating with no evidence, I could easily speculate that Boko Haram attacked the base because they've made a breakthrough. Only, you've got nothing that you can use to dispute that. The evidence speaks for itself. The airbase was attacked.

You, my friend, are denying the undeniable. Casting doubt on the writer of the article won't help you.

I say it again: no victory shall be declared against boko haram anytime soon. Not by the rubbish naai-gerian military anyway.

And by the way - your "insider" argument only serves to collaborate this writer's claim that your military intelligence isn't up to scratch.

Raid on Nigerian Military Base Shows Boko Haram Threat Growing
By Daniel Magnowski Dec 3, 2013 5:48 AM

An attack by suspected Islamist militants on a Nigerian air force base indicates the Boko Haram group retains its military capacity even after a seven-month offensive by government forces.

“It is a big deal, it shows the capability of Boko Haram is growing,” Murtala Touray, senior Africa analyst at IHS Country Risk in London, said today by phone. “For Boko Haram to plan this attack, it shows they are a force to be reckoned with, they can take on the Nigerian army.”

The pre-dawn raid took place yesterday in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state, about 860 kilometers (535 miles) northeast of the capital, Abuja. Two air force personnel were wounded, 24 attackers were killed and three military aircraft and two helicopters were damaged, military spokesman Chris Olukolade said in a statement e-mailed to journalists yesterday.

Boko Haram, which means “Western education is a sin” in the Hausa language, has carried out gun and bomb attacks for the past four years in a campaign to impose Islamic law in Africa’s biggest oil producer. President Goodluck Jonathan declared a state of emergency in May in Borno and two other northeastern states where Boko Haram is most active.

The Borno state government imposed a curfew on Maiduguri after yesterday’s attack. Flights into and out of the city’s airport have resumed, Olukolade said.

It seems as if the military is on the back foot, rather than Boko Haram,” Touray said. “It’s a big embarrassment for the Nigerian security forces. It shows their intelligence-gathering capability is very poor.”

‘Terrorist’ Organization

The U.S. named the militant group a Foreign Terrorist Organization on Nov. 13, a move analysts said may strengthen the Nigerian authorities’ determination to crush Boko Haram, as well as herald greater international involvement in the conflict.

“It will make regional and international bodies sit up and pay attention, and show that the reports from the Nigerian army about killing Boko Haram members and destroying their capabilities, much of it does not actually reflect the reality on the ground,” Touray said.

The Nigerian military frequently reports that it has killed dozens of insurgents in skirmishes and raids.

Boko Haram has used children as young as 12 and abducted and raped women, while the government has not accounted for hundreds of men and boys detained, New York-based Human Rights Watch said on Nov. 29.

Nigeria crisis: Boko Haram attack Maiduguri airbase
2 December 2013 Last updated at 19:00

Boko Haram insurgents have attacked a military airbase in north-eastern Nigeria, destroying two helicopters, the authorities say.

Eyewitnesses say hundreds of militants attacked several areas of the city of Maiduguri, starting early on Monday.

A 24-hour curfew has been imposed in Maiduguri. Its civilian airport was also briefly closed.

A BBC correspondent says the large-scale, co-ordinated attack is a big setback for the Nigerian military.

Thousands of people have been killed since 2009, when Boko Haram launched its campaign to install Islamic law.

In May, a state of emergency was declared in Borno state, of which Maiduguri is the capital, as well as two neighbouring states, while there has been a massive military deployment to the worst-affected areas.

'Crying and wailing'

Ministry of Defence spokesman Brig Gen Chris Olukolade said in a statement that two helicopters and three decommissioned military aircraft had been "incapacitated" during the attack which had been repelled.

He said some army bases had also been targeted, while 24 insurgents had been killed and two soldiers wounded.

Local residents told the AFP news agency that hundreds of heavily armed Islamist gunmen besieged the air force and army bases, razing buildings and setting shops and petrol stations ablaze.

"I saw two air force helicopters burnt," a local official told AFP.

Bomb and gun attacks were carried out in Maiduguri, an AFP reporter in the city said.

A resident said: "We heard women and children in the barracks crying and wailing. At the gate, I saw some vehicles destroyed and the checkpoint there in shreds."

There are reports of military checkpoints being attacked in different parts of the city.

Some eyewitnesses told the AP news agency they had seen bodies with their throats slit.

Others said several vehicles had been driven out of the air base carrying the bodies of victims.

Government and military officials said scores of people may be dead, AP reported.

A spokesman for the Nigerian civil aviation authority told the BBC that the airport had not been attacked, while Brig Gen Olukolade said flights had now resumed.

Recent Boko Haram attacks have been in more rural areas, and it had appeared as though the military operation had made Maiduguri city far safer, says the BBC Nigeria correspondent Will Ross.

Mobile phone links to the city have been cut since May, when the state of emergency was declared.

Boko Haram was founded in Maiduguri in 2002 and was also the scene of its first uprising, in 2009.
