Politics › UPDATE: Nigerian Soldiers Repel Boko Haram Attack On Maiduguri by credibleGod(op): 5:33pm On Jan 25, 2015
The attack by suspected members of the Boko Haram on Maiduguri has been foiled by soldiers,
PREMIUM TIMES has learnt.
However, the neighbouring town of Monguno appears to have been taken over by the insurgents who are also said to have taken over the military barracks there, a senior soldier in the state capital told
PREMIUM TIMES.
As if attacking from various fronts, soldiers were also battling the rampaging insurgents in Konduga, a town 35km from Maiduguri.
The military is expected to release details of the attacks after the battles are completed.
Our source said scores of people including soldiers and insurgents have been killed on the outskirts of Maiduguri since the currentbattles started late Saturday night.
Confirming the fall of Monguno to the insurgents, our source said “we have decimated the idiots (from Maiduguri) but Monguno has fallen”.
He said the military casualty from the Maiduguri and Monguno battles had been recorded, but would not provide details.
Already, the Army has imposed a curfew on Maiduguri.
The 7th Division of the Nigerian Army in Maiduguri on Sunday announced the 24-hour curfew following the attacks.
The Spokesperson of the Division, Sani Usman, said this in a statement he signed and issued inMaiduguri.
“Be informed of the imposition of a curfew on Maiduguri immediately,” the spokesperson said as quoted by the News Agency of Nigeria.
“The curfew will remain till further

Several people were killed as Boko Haram insurgents continued their attacks on communities in Adamawa State, particularly those in Michika Local Government Area, survivors have told
PREMIUM TIMES.
A residentof Garta, one of the villages raided by the sect members, who identified himself as Vandu Kainu, said the insurgents arrived his village around 6 p.m. on Saturday.
“They burnt most of the houses after looting them, as most people had to climb the nearby mountains to save their lives,” Mr. Kainu said on phone. “For now I can’t say the number of casualty as we are still in the bush, but they slaughtered many people like rams.”
He added that the insurgents also abducted many trapped residents, mostly youth and women.
Speaking on the attacks, the member representing Michika in the Adamawa State House of Assembly, Adamu Kamale, said, “the militant Boko Haram are still there killing people, they slaughtered many like rams and burning houses.”
Mr. Kamale said the insurgents kidnapped many youthand women.
Speaking on the other communities attacked, the lawmaker said the insurgents “attacked Mbororo, Shahu, Liddle, Garta, Kamale and Ghumci.”
“The attack continuedsince last Friday and no presence of security operatives in the affected areas.
“We are calling on the government to come to our rescue, some of the fleeing residents are now trapped on mountains,” he said.
Already, about 10,000 Michika residents, of the Higgi ethnic group, live as refugees in Yola, the Adamawa Statecapital, and its environs.
Michika is currently under Boko Haram control, while other communities in the neighbouring Madagali – home town of the state governor, Bala Ngillari; the Speaker of the State Assembly, Ahmadu Fintiri; and the former political adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan, Ahmad Gulak – are also controlled by the insurgents.
However, PREMIUM TIMES learnt that Nigerian troops have recaptured Vintim, the hometown of Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, Alex Badeh, which was earlier captured by the insurgents.
Governor Ngillari had last week called for postponement of the February elections in Adamawa, saying a large part of the state was being controlled by the insurgents and would thus

Soldiers of the Nigerian army and Boko Haram terrorists are currently engaged in a fierce exchange of fire since Saturday night as insurgents, in their hundreds, attempt to invade Maiduguri, the Borno state capital, security sources have told PREMIUM TIMES.
This is happening as reports filtered into Maiduguri that the nearby town of Monguno had been seized by the Boko Haram terrorist. That could not be independently confirmed as at the time of publishing this.
A security source told PREMIUM TIMES, “We had a sleepless night till this morning because this elements tried to enter Maiduguri from Dalwa and Limanti axis but our soldiers were able to repell them. They retreated and took another flank around Njimtilo this morning and our troops hav been engaging them theretoo.”
Njimtilo is about 20 kilometres away from Maiduguri, the state capital.
As at the time of filing this report more troops, together with operatives of the Civilian-JTF, were seen moving towards Njimtilo.
Residents of Maiduguri 1000 Unit Housing Estate, not very far away from Njimtilo, are fleeing their houses and moving toward the downtown.
Witnesses said bullets were flying and empty shells were seen littering the roads as soldiers of the Nigerian Air Force Base and 33Artillery brigade continuedtoshoot intothe air.
Fighter jet of the Nigeria airforce was heard hovering over the townat about 9am.
Details of the ongoing attack is still sketchy as sources in Monguno and Njimtilo said the fightis stillon.
Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau, had last week in a video boasted to have more than enough arms to execute a major war against Nigeria.
