Anna Okon The instability in electricity supply from the national grid has continued to make businesses to look inwards through independent power generation , a new report has said . According to the survey conducted by the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria , expenditure on self -generated energy in the manufacturing sector increased from N 58 .82 bn in 2015 to N 129 .95 in 2016 . The report of the survey just released showed that the sector spent N 71 .13 bn more on independent power generation in 2016 . A further analysis of the report indicated that manufacturers spent N 66 .99 bn on independent power generation in the second half of 2016 as against N 29 .48 bn spent in the corresponding period of 2015, showing an increase of N 37 .51 bn . It also increased by N 4. 03 bn when compared with N62 .96 bn recorded in the preceding half of the year. The report revealed that the share of energy for the sector stood at 36 per cent, and the supply averaged eight hours . It stated that the rising expenditure on independent power generation and arbitrary increase in electricity tariffs were responsible for the high cost of production in the sector . This , it noted , made it difficult for made - in- Nigeria products to compete well with imported goods in terms of pricing . The association , in the report , noted that the macroeconomic terrain in 2016 , especially in the first half of the year , was highly volatile. It described the acute shortage of foreign exchange , high lending rate and exclusion of some vital manufacturing raw materials from the official foreign exchange market as major economic problems during the period, adding that the situation was made worse by the declining household consumption due to inflationary effect on real time income . The preferential forex allocation to manufacturers by the Central Bank of Nigeria , according to the association, was however the turning point in the second half of 2016 . This , it said , was because the forex allocation was able to support the various investments already made locally for the development of raw materials and production , to a large extent . “This , in fact, was responsible for the production momentum gained in the economy in the second half of the year ,” the report stated . Among other recommendations , MAN advised the government to re -visit the power sector reform and fully implement the power sector road map to improve the efficiency of the generation , transmission and distribution companies . It urged the government to re -classify manufacturing sector into strategic gas users from the current commercial classification . MAN stressed the need to ensure proper settlement of acquired properties such as land for electricity equipment installation to avoid venting of anger that would lead to destruction of the infrastructure . http://punchng.com/manufacturers-spent-n129-95bn-on-independent-power-in-2016-report/

A four -month -old infant was found dead after she was left inside a vehicle for most of the day . The incident happened in Oklahoma, United States of America . Her grandmother had thought she had left the girl at a daycare centre before going to work . “She apparently had thought that she dropped off the child this morning , which she had not ,” Mark Opgrande , a spokesman with the Oklahoma County sheriff’ s office told KFOR news channel . “After she got off work , she drove back to Luther to stop by the child care centre . “They informed her that she did not drop off the child and they went , proceeded to look for the child inside the daycare. They couldn ’t find her. That ’s when they went out to the vehicle , and then discovered her outside in the back of the car . She was deceased .” The fire department was called to Apple Creek Learning Centre in Luther at around 5. 30 pm on Friday . The four -month -old was found still inside the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. The grandmother , whose name has not yet been released , is being interviewed by police investigators at the Oklahoma County Sheriff’ s Office who will prepare a report and send it on to the attorney’ s office . “She ’s being questioned, she ’s obviously distraught , this is a tragic situation and that’ s why we remind parents all the time . It ’s hot out and things like this aren’ t supposed to happen , but they do .” The grandmother has custody of the baby . No charges have so far been filed . The Police in Delta have arrested a commercial sex worker who allegedly stabbed her client to death during an argument at Destar Hotel , Asaba , Delta, on July 18 . The Spokesman of the Police Command in the state , DSP Andrew Aniamaka , said on Friday in Asaba that the police responded to a distress call from the hotel after the incident . “The suspect is currently in police custody . “A day after the incident , the “C Division ’’ in Asaba carried out preliminary investigation on the case and transferred it to Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department. “As I speak to you, homicide detectives have commenced full investigation into the case with a view to unravelling what actually transpired between the suspect and the victim to establish culpability.” The hotel has now been deserted , and attempt to speak with its manager was unsuccessful as he was said to have travelled out of Asaba . However , a bar attendant , who preferred anonymity , said the incident had thrown “the stakeholders ” into a mourning mood. “The sad incident started like a normal argument inside the hotel room, and before we realised it, a man was down with a fatal stab. “The incident happened at about 10 .45 p .m ., so nobody could actually say what led to the fracas . One of the few sex workers in the hotel who also spoke anonymously , described the incident as horrible and unfortunate, saying it had brought “our business to a standstill ’’. “However , I will like to use this opportunity to advise our clients to always respect themselves when they come here . “Many of the clients do invite trouble to themselves . I rest my case , ” she said . The victim was a married man with four children. ( NAN ) http://punchng.com/sex-worker-stabs-father-of-four-to-death-in-asaba/ |
